ou might be asking: but who is Ed? And to that, I reply: dunno.

Coco’s the name, Fleur’s the game. When I realised I had to write an ‘editor’s letter’1, Vogue was obviously the first place I turned to. After arduous researching sessions, I came across Anna Wintour’s favoured method as a revered editor-in-chief, and discovered her top secret 6-step process:

1. Have Grand Idea for magazine. 2. Take well deserved break after put ting much effort into thinking of Grand Idea.

3. Continue to do nothing about the

Grand Idea, but often think about its brilliance.

Anyway. 2017! What a year! We hope you enjoy the thing we put together. Especially you, third years, you fabulous bunch.

Poring over the events, the people, and the mems has been a lovely process of Realise print date is four days away. realising how bloody brilliant those that live within the Trinity gates are – there Scour Facebook’s photo albums to truly is something special about our the wee hours of the morning to fill dear ol’ col, our home for all. the now far less glossy pages.

Bizarrely, her modus is almost identical to ours. Coincidence? I think not.

Much love, I absolutely did not – it is completely my prerogative. But, as I am a writer, and am thus by consequence awfully self-indulgent, I decided the people need it.1a 1a They absolutely do not. 1

It seems like only a moment ago Iffy was giving her welcome speech and we were awkwardly dancing with people that we didn’t know. In between a blur of events and and too many last minute all-nighter assignments, comes a whole lot of little moments that we forget about. As the year comes to a close, I remember the small things that have made my first year what it was. This years Fleur de Lys makes me a a bit nostalgic,

t has been another splendid year for the residents of Trinity College. There is much to celebrate and be thankful for in our progressive and close-knit community, and much to anticipate as the College begins a period of growth in facilities and programs. The decision taken this year to move to an undergraduate only residential college of 370 students by 2020, is one of the most important and significant resolutions in the rich history of Trinity. In the detailed and robust deliberations that led to this decision, it was recognised that one of the keys to building and nurturing communities is the number and quality of the opportunities for students to share and explore their talents and splendidly diverse backgrounds. These opportunities have been abundant and often remarkable in 2017, illustrated fulsomely by the achievements in creative and performing arts. What a joy it is that our students lead and produce a play and a musical each year, and X and Y were important highlights of 2017. Our acapella life continues to flourish, and the Candystripes and Trinity Tiger Tones were in very good form. The Candystripes’ Showcase in September marked the evolution of the group in singing several numbers arranged by our Music students, and achieving advanced musical complexity and beautiful harmonisation. The Tiger Tones shared concert at the Athenaeum Theatre with the Trinitones from Trinity College Dublin was also one of the stellar moments of the year, capturing much of what is best about students from all over the world sharing and celebrating their talents. Trinity also did very well in intercollegiate moments, including in the Fresher Dance Off, Theatre Sports, The Battle of the Bands, and Debating and Public Speaking. The depth and high quality of the Trinity populace was also clear in the various activities under the banner of The Dialectical Society. The move to read and deliver works at Formal Hall in the Philip Sargeant Poetry Prize and Wigram Allen Oratory Prize was a great success, and the offers generated great dinner table conversation and debate. Trinity has a proud tradition of excellence in the performing arts, and this was embellished significantly in 2017. 11

2017 WAS THE YEAR OF SHAKESPEARE! When I was told that the O Week theme was going to be Shakespeare, I couldn’t have been happier. It made a nice change to be consulted on things like Elizabethan costuming, music, and other Shakespearean matters rather than usual event planning questions (although my advice regarding a donkey for the “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” themed party seemed to have been lost in translation as several goats were also present). I was also able to reveal my parallel life with William Shakespeare in the Commencement Dinner speech, and show off my favourite book (the Second Folio). The announcement of the Pop-Up Globe season in Melbourne in 2017 fitted in very well with the College’s theme, and kept the momentum going until the TCAC dinner where I was able to compare each of our outgoing TCAC members with a fitting Shakespeare character, and present them with a copy of their play. It was my very great honour to be Acting Dean during Semester One of 2017, and I was grateful and humbled by the overwhelming support given to me by the students and staff at the College. To have done it during the Year of Shakespeare made it a doubly exciting year, and one that I will long remember. 12

100 YEARS OF THE CHAPEL Over the course of the past year the spiritual life of the College has been greatly aided by the faithful work of our Chapel, including our chaplaincy team, Choir, vergers, and the leadership of staff and students of the wider College. The Chapel is an incredible gift to our community life and on 25th November this year we celebrate 100 years since it was first opened for prayer and worship - the original College Chapel is now the Warden’s office. Many may not perhaps realise, but every morning of the week, Monday to Friday, a number of staff and students from the College gather for prayer. At these prayers our College, it’s leadership and all staff and students are prayed for, particularly remembering those who have asked for our prayer who are facing hardships. For me this is one of the most valuable underpinnings of the life of our college that goes on every day. particularly in difficult or challenging times it is of great comfort to hear the Chapel bell ringing and to know that our College community is being prayed for. As we give thanks for another year, I am particularly thankful for a place that promotes and encourages us all to respond to our spiritually and for regular speakers and visitors who challenge us to seek out the divine in the every day. Deum benedicite Trinitatis collegium! 13

017, What a year! It started with Shakespeare and ended with Space. I have had the pleasure of working at Trinity for another year and seeing through a remarkable bunch of valedictorians. This year has been somewhat different with having to change roles and become the Associate Dean for first semester. But from the moment that Iffy found out, she burst out with “we will help you”, and so the TCAC did. This is what epitomises Trinity to me and is a tribute to the community that all of us have created. As the saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun, and hasn’t this year flown! So I wish our departing students all the best for what the world throws your way, you are ready and can take it on! For the rest of you, the fun is only just beginning.

All the best, Em : )

his year has been the beginning of what I hope is a long stay as part of the Trinity community. I began in my role as Academic Programs Manager in March 2017, concluding my time at the Australian Institute of Sport where I had followed one of my other great passions (Sport) in a role that encompassed athlete wellbeing and welfare. I have loved my time at Trinity this year and have enjoyed my role immensely, particularly managing the individual academic challenges that have arisen over the year and celebrating the academic achievements of so many within the Trinity cohort. I have also thoroughly enjoyed the Fireside Chats this year and was particularly taken by the presentation on ‘Magic’ presented by Professor Chris Gosden from The School of Archaeology, University of Oxford. Beyond the realm of Academic Programs, I have loved so many other aspects of college life. There are too many to mention individually, however, I particularly enjoyed the touch and rugby victories over Ormond, the netball grand final, V-Day chapel service and the guard of honour and dinner that followed. I also felt particularly privileged to coach both the Men’s and Women’s basketball teams this year and whilst the results weren’t what we hoped for, I enjoyed the experience immensely, as much as any I have been a part of in recent memory. I look forward to increasing my role in Trinity life in 2018, continuing to work in the outstanding Residential College team. I am particularly committed to developing the academic program in the years to come, firmly cementing Trinity’s place as one of the finest residential colleges with one of the broadest and intellectually stimulating academic programs on offer. 15

india In January this year 12 students: Chris Popovic, Holly McNaughton, Caitlin Tjandra, Sam Strong, Charles Wylie, Will Ross, Molly Batrouney, Jacqui Jiang, Theo Galanis, Charlie Godber, Victoria Hofflin and Tilly Ramsay (TC2015) went on a monthlong trip to India to volunteer with the Asha Society in Delhi. Throughout the volunteering weeks we taught English to Asha’s university and school students, facilitated training workshops and conducted observations at medical centers in one of the poorest slum areas in Delhi. The group also worked to raise funds for Asha and over the past year we have raised over $14,000 which goes directly to the college (university) education of 17-20 year olds who have grown up in the slum areas of Delhi. The second part of the trip was spent travelling to various parts of India including: Agra, Jaipur, Varanasi, Bikaner, Goa and Mumbai. Apart from battling various illnesses, some near-death experiences and plenty of curry the group had a wonderful time and thoroughly enjoyed their time in India. The third annual trip will be going ahead next January with 12 more students set to volunteer with Asha.

arnhem land Waking up to a sunrise over clear blue water, surrounded by palm trees and pristine white sand, was a magical experience. We had been sleeping on a platform outside high enough to give some comfort that we were safe from the crocodile, Nike, who was floating 2 metres offshore. It was safe to say that Bawaka homeland in far North-East Arnhem land was the most beautiful place any of us had ever seen. However, it was the lessons learnt in ‘bush university’, given by local leader Timmy, the emotional welcome and goodbye ceremonies that the locals were generous enough to hold for us, and being able to sit and chat with the gorgeous people of Bawaka that made the experience. We may have only spent 4 days in Bawaka, but we were given a rare glimpse into the enormity and beauty of Australia’s Indigenous culture, only fuelling our collective desire to continue learning about the world’s oldest living culture.

My time at Garma reminded me that family comes in all different forms, in the earth, the animals, in the trees and the people around you. Garma was an incredibly humbling experience and will definitely not fade from my memory anytime soon. The things you hear and see make you ask lots of questions about yourself and what it means to be Australian today. Being there is not always easy, but the best and most valuable experiences never are.” Clarrie Smith “Garma would have to be one of my favourite experiences made available by Trinity so far, I learnt so much that I would not have otherwise in an academic context and it has made me more determined to ensure that we can not only improve the lives of Indigenous Australians into the future, but also learn to appreciate Indigenous cultures.” Sarah abell “Going to Garma we were emersed in Yolngu culture, it was one of those experiences you can’t put into words. The people we met I will always hold in my heart. Coming back to Melbourne I had a different understanding of Yolngu people, culture and traditions that are the foundations of the Yolngu. The mix between urban influences and culture was incredible! I would recommend to anyone interested go to Garma and experience two worlds!” jaz de busch

iffy donnelan senior student 2016/17

IFFY, CONGRATS! YOU’VE MADE IT THROUGH. WHAT DO YOU THINK HAS BEEN THE DEFINING MOMENT OF YOURS? I don’t think that a Se-

nior Student has one defining role, but if I had to pick the thing that I have been most invested in this year, it has definitely been getting the academic programme up and running again. Going through the processes of bringing up the problem with the board, bringing in a great new academic supervisor and turning things around was a big effort. It’s really hard to actually make changes at Trinity, plans stop and start because other important things come up unexpectedly. You’re never going to get everything done that you want to because of these unexpected things, and you have to prioritise whether you think it’s more important to forge ahead with the changes you promised, or to help college students at a more personal level. DO YOU FEEL THAT THE ROLE SHOULD BE MORE DEFINED? Yes, I have realised in retrospect that the role should be more defined, particularly in terms of acting as a middleman (or middlewoman!) of communication between admin and students. A PROUDEST MOMENT? I don’t know but I definitely have a most ashamed moment… I always considered myself a nice person, but five days out from V Day, I was on the phone to the booking agent at Red Bull and he told me that he had double booked the Red Bull tent for that day and that they would not be providing the tent anymore. Entering into a massive rant, I demanded to speak to the manager, and long story short I think I may have gotten the guy fired…But we had the tent on the day so it was fine! WAS THERE A POINT YOU TRULY FELT YOU BELONGED IN THE ROLE? It was really the smallest thing, a few weeks in I still didn’t really know if the TCAC was on my side or not, I wasn’t really sure if I had full backing from the team yet. After having a big stress cry, I looked at my phone to see I’d received a text from Emmsy, saying that I was doing a really great job so far and he was there to help any time I needed it. For me, that moment completely made me so much more confident about where we all stood, and that we all truly wanted to support each other. LOVELY, AND TO FINISH OFF, YOUR QUOTE FOR THE YEAR? Don’t let the bastards get you down. 28

2017/18

SO, TED, WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE COLLEGE IN THE COMING YEAR? I wish to bring the excitement back to college, and elevate the experience here beyond what it already is. I also hope to bring back alumni involvement with the current residents at Trinity.

AND HOW WILL YOU PERFORM THIS ROLE? Talk to everyone. Talk

talk talk. Communication is key. ANY QUALMS? Don’t have any, really. WHAT MAKES TRINITY, TRINITY? Its history, as well as the ability to form friendships and partnerships that will last and better yourself. ANY WORDS FOR THE OUTGOING TCAC? Thanks for showing us the way, and placing the foundations for a more prosperous future for the college. AS A FLEUR EXCLUSIVE - WHO

IN LEEPER HAS THE STRONGEST HANDSHAKE? Gary Norman, head of projects. AND FINALLY, IF YOU COULD BE ANY OF HUA’S DISHES? The lasagna, but not the one with the Mexican mince, the regular one.

great balls of fire jerry lee lewis 29

AL – WHAT MADE YOU GO FOR THE ROLE IN THE FIRST PLACE? Wanted

to have a hand in the coordination of third year and have an impact on the organisation. AND HAS BEING SOCIAL SECRETARY MADE YOU A MORE SOCIAL PERSON? You silly doofus – that’s not what Social Secretary means! It’s in reference to the Social Calendar! But yes, it does require you to not be socially inept – something I’m still struggling to overcome.

HOW MANY COMPLAINTS PER DINNER DID YOU RECEIVE FOR THE SEATING ARRANGEMENTS?

Rule Number 1 of Social Secretary – don’t mess with seating plans. Best way to learn is to make that mistake. RIGHT. NOW – THE BALL.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ATTEMPTED TO BLACKMAIL YOU INTO TELLING THEM THE ENTERTAINMENT? Only those aggressively petitioning for Daryl Braithwaite. DID YOU

GET LUKE MILLION TO SIGN YOUR BOOBS? The only thing Mr Mil-

lion signed was the clause outlining that he had to play the Stranger Things Theme #teamSteve. STEVE AND DUSTIN FTW.

FINALLY – WHO DO YOU HAVE TO THANK MOST FOR BEING AN EXCELLENT, SUPPORTIVE, WONDERFUL BACKBONE? My spinal

column did a fantastic job keeping me upright and keeping my nerves in check :) DAMN.

Get Caitlin to admit she’s not the cutest girl at college, just once. Hear someone say that Gee isn’t an angel, just once. Get Cam to say ‘that’s a good idea, Caris’. Just once. Have Mullins not break down when told there’s alternatives to his ideas. Just once. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO PERFORM IN YOUR ROLE? Many a resstudents, many a FB post, many a coffee. WHAT MAKES TRINITY TRINITY? The sauna - oh wait, I mean the library. ANY QUALMS WITH THE COLLEGE? The awful yoghurt served at breakfast isn’t 2% Greek low fat, low-GI, high protein, low sugar, low yoghurt, high calcium. AND ANY FINAL NOTES FOR THE OUTGOING TCAC? der the community portfolio - head the outreach committee and drive change with what I believe to does well to engage 10% of college. It’s about involving the middle 50% who may have participated in school, and make the activities more inclusive and easily engaged. I want to make it easy for people to get the foot in the door and discover a passion or at least some satisfaction that doesn’t come from an email. Want to ensure that the Trinity community is highly functional - maximising wellbeing and addressing mental health moving forward with an availability of services and a knowledge that they exist. AND GOALS FOR THE TCAC? Want people to leave the place as better people to what they were when they arrived. Make a great community. IN YOUR EYES, WHAT MAKES TRINITY TRINITY? Inspiration, high calibre of people and ability who, as long as you don’t get lost, drive you to bigger and better places whilst having fun at the same time. People thrive in whatever they do. HENDO, HOW WAS THE ‘TCAC EXPERIENCE’ AND HOW DID IT DIFFER FROM WHAT YOU EXPECTED?

The TCAC experience was an interesting one and a worthwhile experience. I learnt a lot about the other members and learnt valuable skills in leadership. Leadership from the top is vital, role models motivate people and create environments of hard work and positive outcomes. Our TCAC had a range of people with various strengths which complimented one and other to achieve good outcomes. I enjoyed the role of indoor and had an unreal team behind me that assisted me every step of the way. All in all, any experience is a good one, no matter the outcome cause we walk away having learnt something. TELL US –

around 6 grand in debt. I withheld supper from the community until debts were paid - not something I enjoyed at all. This halved the debt, however there were still a number of pelicans who evaded the debt. It’s really a reflection of one’s integrity, next time the debt collector man won’t be me, it’ll be a bank or someone after your knees. WHO IN B&G IS THE MOST RECKLESS BUGGY DRIVER? By far John one of the gardeners, just gonna send it! DIETARY REQUIREMENTS: THOUGHTS? If you live in a fantasy world of believing that vegetarianism or veganism is a thing you need to get your head checked. Learn about where your food comes from, learn about the dynamics of living in a rural town and the need for diversified industries to keep Australian Agriculture going. Most of all, appreciate the hardship of people who try to put food on your table and make a living. But if you have a legitimate dietary issue like celiac or similar, hook into the dietary options and all the best. FINALLY, WHAT MAKES TRINITY TRINITY? Friendly nature of everyone and the have a crack attitude. Can’t walk between your room and wherever you’re going without a smile.

I think I’ve been able to put sport into perspective, and recognise that in the end, it’s just an opportunity to have fun with your friends, and the world will keep spinning. AND WHICH OF HUA’S DISHES WOULD YOU BE? Sweet and sour pork. Some people fear it but once you give it a shot it’s actually good value. FINAL QUESTION – BINS: THOUGHTS? Lots of them around the college at the moment. A good form of waste disposal. Blue one out every week and alternate the recycling with the green waste too. SICK.

Sport is a major outlet from university, and I want to foster this idea with initiatives like boxing and yoga. TELL US, WHAT MAKES TRINITY TRINITY? KATIE! WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GO FOR ARTS REP? I wanted to make Arts at Trinity a

more central focus. There were two main new events that I wanted to get off the ground in my year in this role and I think I achieved them! I wanted to do an arts networking event, which worked really well for most of the people who attended, and I wanted to run an Arts Festival based on the Quadstock event at Queens College. Although this year it was a relatively small event, I would love for it to become an annual tradition and for the future Arts reps to keep up these events that make a difference in college life! WHAT’S THE MOST CLASSIC ‘KATIE’ MOMENT THAT HAPPENED THIS YEAR? Probably twisting Pete’s arm and insisting during O Week preparation that we NEEDED the $80 a head Shakespearian era costumes and that it would be SO worth it. mid year o week

Whilst the O-week at the start of the year is very intense with very little free time, Mid-Year O week involves a far less hectic and more intimate array of activities. There is less need for ice breaking games and chats with various sub groups – such as TCAC and Scuddy Groups – with more emphasis on introducing the new Trinitarians to various staples of Melbourne and College life. This began on the first day with impromptu gathering at the Naughton’s pub. It was here, as well as their first ever formal hall and drinks in the deanery, that the tight group of a dozen or so new Trinitarians were quick to be at ease with each other and settled into their new home. That night they were given their first taste of the college jesters, as they underwent ‘fresher five’ preventative exercises. As it was a Wednesday, the Buttery hosted a ‘bar night’ in the JCR, first bar night at which the freshers were able to meet some other members of the college who then brought them to the College’s favourite local watering hole, The Shaw Davey Slum.

Angus mackey

On a wet and cold, classic Melbourne day, we welcomed our new Freshers into their new home. Some highlights included Bounce, Dumplings and the Winery Tour. The trek out to Bounce, which was conveniently located near the airport, took a while on the tram. Caught in the rain on our walk back we were all appropriately soaked and it looked as though we had been to MSAC rather than Bounce. There is nothing like Pissy Dumplings to introduce everyone to the finest cuisine we experience whilst at college, appropriately paired with the most disgusting bottle of wine available. We finished off the week with a winery tour which took not 1 bus to complete, but 3! It was a great day and definitely the most memorable event of the week, parading around in our op shop attire we demolished wine and pizza all day. 70

Cemented in the Trinity College calendar, the night of Trinity College Ball was one of anticipation and fervour. Nestled in the midst of the South Yarra is The Emerson Bar – where we lay our scene for the long-awaited social event. After months of deliberation and planning, the Trinity College Ball Committee were ready to host an elegant night for an eager list of attendees. Taking inspiration from the tiered, multi-levelled design of the venue, the occasion loosely adhered to the theme of a Fantasia in Manhattan - glorious views of the cityscape from the Hampton-esque rooftop bar perfectly complimented the lower level’s Studio 54 ambiance. It was a true delight to witness, such a night of glamour and jubilation. With regal dinner suits and flowing gowns – the night was danced away to the rhapsodies of Luke Million’s synthesizer odysseys and discotheque flavours. Suffice to say it was not a night bereft of drama or tears, but what good night is not? Feet were then sore. Ties were then loosened. Taxis were then called. Another Trinity College Ball cemented in the annals of the event’s rapturous history.

sarah abell’s toast to the third years My fellow third years. Just a couple of things from me. It is a very exciting yet scary prospect to be standing here giving this speech in testament to our last hurrah tonight. Thanks to a year of experience writing the Beer Garden, I would think that I am well versed in the subtlety required to make an entertaining speech for those in the know. I did initially wonder, however, how I could possibly create an effective marriage of comedy and sincerity without a committee of five and a Google document at 3am before the night. But here I am, with two whole weeks preparation. In three years we’ve made closer friendships than many of us managed in thirteen years of school, and it has been an honour to spend not only this, the People’s Semester, with you, but every day since I entered the Trinity gates as a nerdy girl from Adelaide in February 2015. We had no way of knowing, when we were munching on chicken noodle boxes under the Oak on this very first day, what was in store for us. We knew from the very beginning that we are a year level that gets involved, not that we would ever tell you about it. Our year level has never failed to fill sporting teams or to attend their matches. We have been getting around each other since even before the list of birthdays and other achievements on the back of dinner menus reminded us to do so. In perhaps the best example of our year level getting behind each other, the election of Holly and Harrison in late 2015 to the revered position of Jester showed us that, in relation to Harrison, the clap – o – meter really is the most effective tool of merit based democracy. We made 2016 a stellar year for Clubs and Societies. For all the meetings and emails to organ92

ise events, we reached new heights, as Beer Budlay put on a free party, E.R White purchased a sloth, and Bella Richardson became the latest member of the class of 2017, along with Holly McNaughton, to add her name to the very exclusive list of Wedding Party Brides’ Alumni. It is very rare that I put jokes aside, but all jokes aside, we have, indeed, been a year level that has contributed extensively to the Trinity community. While Em Cassen and Holly McNaughton have changed degrees seven times between them, we’ve managed to balance this fun with a brilliant work ethic that lasts all year round. However, it has not all been easy, and we have had to wave goodbye to some college experiences we could only have but for a short time. We will forever be proud to be the last year level to have attended Paraiso, and who may lay claim to nights at the Prince Alfred Hotel. (Rest In Peace) However, the removal of these institutions from our lives failed to stop many of us from enjoying college perhaps too much. Matt Blake’s impromptu set up of a temporary PA’s in his room after Commencement Dinner in second year springs to mind, as does Iffy opening up the Tower after TCAC Dinner this year. We’ve also said goodbye to Coffee Haus and Beer Brewing, and wonder just how next year’s college community will cope without these great former college institutions.   It is clear that the aforementioned hardships have only brought us closer together. This closeness is a testament to the fact that having a significant intake from some of Melbourne and Perth’s most exclusive private schools is in no way a barrier to long lasting friendship. In this I refer to a number of things, including: - Coco Garner Davis’ tram inspector Public Service Announcements, - asking “What’s for lunch” in the girls’ group chat and getting a prompt and informative reply,

- Owen Kelly’s daily 2 hour lunch shifts, - John Louis Irvine and Chrisco Richards’ strong presence at breakfast, featuring the quiz in The Age and other interesting facts, - everyone getting around Peter McIntosh Prime for Instagram in first year, - Jess Grills’ ‘catch up with people’ spreadsheet, - everyone being ok with Nick Henderson often going completely off the grid, not to be contacted for 7 days or, - Finn Cowden popularising agricultural fashion choices, - And the ongoing success of and participation in the All Stars football team, lead by Marcus Soon and Lachie Haig, even in spite of ‘lads culture’ criticisms But it is this sense of closeness and friendship that I would posit is the best quality of our year level, and is the one that will continue to remain even after we’ve driven out of the Trinity gates for the last time, or have had someone else drive us out with a borrowed car park swipey. We really lucked out with the social engineering of the 2015 intake. There are not many communities in which people will get up at 6am to watch an amateur sporting match, or who will leave their door open during the day in the knowledge that, most of the time, their possessions will not be the victim of conniving pranks. I know this will be the case as long as we continue the trend set by previous ex Trinitarians and continue to live within a 5 km radius of each other. Even for those who will be leaving Melbourne next year, I have no doubt that the ties that bound us to Trinity will continue to bind us together. While we’ve been here, we’ve seen a lot of changes. And Trinity will be a much different place when we return in 20 years to what it is today. When the sun goes down for us, however, what may never be taken away is the memories we’ve created together: evenings on the Behan Balcony, late night Swot Vac discussions between Jeopardy and the Library, and the odd Bursary Exchange joke culminating in 60 likes. I look forward to seeing you all in the JCR tonight, clad in our green fresher t shirts, for what I am sure will not be the last time.

BILLIARDS ROOM The Billiards Room started the year with the non-discriminatory, all-inclusive, inoffensive and particularly politically correct Op-Shop Prom Night. Despite the well wishes of the Committee, the non-segregated pre-drinks diverged into a healthy adaptation of the much-loved Bro/Gal chats. The JCR steam began with an awkward encounter typical of a high-school prom, with our Prom King and Prom Queen engaging in an amorous dance. The rest of the night continued in typical Billiards style, with the Committee, sans Sauce Atkinson and Josh Parker for unknown reasons, cleaning the JCR of sweat and condensation well into the early hours of the following morning. Williams Mullins described the night as a real gem to his entire college experience. After a long bout of brainstorming, the Committee decided that the best way to welcome in the second semester, and the Fresh Freshers, was by hosting a night across the road at Naughton’s Hotel. The entire $2000 tab was recouped with ticket sales, with no-one to stingy to pay the $2 ticket price. Overall the night was a great success, with Sam Hayden describing it as a FANTASTIC way to introduce himself to ALL of the incoming freshers. In balls we trust,

For a firm to be successful, both product and marketing must be top notch. In each respect, Beer Budlay and its ripper committee, have nailed 2017. Like Cathy Freeman, Steven Bradbury or James Fearnside beating PB’s, “Beer Budlay presents Beer Bud’s Big Aussie Bash”, “Bak2Skool” and “Trinity Agricultural Ball” each became the “biggest steamer on the college crescent” at the time they were hosted. Consequently, while the society’s raison d’être remains the same as years gone by, it should be obvious to even the most one-eyed Billiards president that Beer Budlay’s membership growth, to a base 160x that of 2010, is ' representative of a Golden Age (@WineCellar).

TRAC has had a ripper year, We started with an adventure to the lush Rubicon Valley in North East Victoria with scenic waterfall stops along the way, we pushed Paul-Marie’s Auberginemobile to the limit requiring everyone to get out of the car so he could clear the 4WD track he had mistakenly braved. The food was plentiful & the beers were cold, we were lacking only one thing, we forgot the sauce… (See Figure 1) TRAC then backed up our brilliant success with another camping trip to the verdant towering fig 1. Guy Paul cannot locate the lamb sauce forests of Lorne and the Otways. Copious relaxation and snags were had, the sauce was located, and El Presidente encouraged all to try his awful home brewed beer. The night really kicked off when the campers next to us started up some bangers and soon enough, half of Lorne was raving at the campsite, with an eclectic mix of visitors including the ubiquitous Swedish backpacker group, a fun time was had by all. Finally, TRAC continued the tradition of the annual snow trip, Falls Creek was chosen for its good snow quality and the friendly demeanour of its village and pubs. We struck gold with the snow conditions with the best season in 17 years, and the weather was perfect, many fell prey to sun, (see Tom McMahon & Jack Menzel for further clarification). Whilst the pubs proved to be less friendly than previously thought (please see Archie Roberts for further clarification) we had an excellent time and went home on Sunday thoroughly worn out and happy that we got the bond back. Hopefully TRAC has as successful a year next year. I wish Paul-Marie all the best next year as he aims to take TRAC to new heights and usurp its rightful place in the big 3 from Billiards. 99

At the conclusion of her term as President for the ER White Society 2017, Sophie sat down with me to talk about her time on the society, what they have achieved, and about the work that they chose to purchase.

artist, however, that caught everyone’s attention.

Although it may seem that the choice of the acquisition was directly inspired by that first Marika Family exhibition at the Professor Burke Gallery, this is not the case. The committee admired the works at the time but at the point when the exhibition was on, they still each had different ideas of what they wanted to purchase. The one thing that was agreed upon was that they wanted to choose a work that could be interpreted in a multitude of ways to reflect a diverse college community, and initially they wanted to ideally find an abstract work that was not too conservative. This led them to finding the first piece of interest to them by Nonggirrnga Marawili – an “amazing” work of black paint on recycled aluminium. The committee all loved this work, however, Sophie touched on the constraints that the Society faced in having to consider where the work was going to be exhibited, as a work of that style required a lot of attention to lighting and placement that may have proved difficult. It was the

When Ben Thomas, the curator at Trinity, was at the Garma Festival in Northeast Arnhem Land, he sent photos to the committee of some of the Larrikitj poles there, reinvigorating the committee’s interest in these works. The team eventually narrowed the decision down to a number of poles by Nonggirrnga Marawili, and chose the one that now forms part of the collection. Although the work uses traditional forms, the artist herself is currently at a poignant point in her career, experimenting with new styles and mediums in her works (as evidenced in the initial black aluminium work). This evolution is something that the committee wanted to evoke in the purchase, reflecting a student cohort that was embracing the opportunity to learn and exploring new ideas, while still having a respect and understanding of the past and of tradition. The Nonggirrnga Marawili Larrikitj Pole will be displayed at the entrance of the Gateway Building with the Marika Family Larrikitj Poles.

beer brewing:

a eulogy

You know what they say - all good things must come to an end. This is what we must tell ourselves as we are forced to say goodbye to one of Trinity’s most beloved and successful societies- the Brewing Society. 2017 was a typically busy year for the Brewing Society, successfully brewing a few vats of beer which were successfully stored in Kit’s room. Who knows what else could have been achieved if it weren’t for a lacklustre and directionless committee. Who knows? Maybe even a guided walking tour.

Rest in Peace.

dance The Dance Society gang reunited to hand select a chosen few for the Fresher Dance Off. Though a questionable choice, Raise Your Glass by P!nk achieved the right level of nostalgia and irony to bring home the cup, all the way to fourth place. (We were robbed, but if you want to see Alex Gall missing an integral dance move, watch our performance on the youtubes.) Even though Gabie Le Miere was undoubtedly the best dancer, I was forced to award MVP to Shawn Ingle due to his unconditional dedication to the dance, and because of his biceps. Being President of Dance Society has been an absolute pleasure, but the proudest achievement of my tenure was giving Tom Grills the confidence to bust a move on the dance floor, which lead to him being kicked out of Arc. “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.” Caitlin Tjandra

dialectic

This year the dialectic society has continued the long standing traditions and ran three prizes for literary works. The first was the Franc Carse Essay Prize which was won by Claudia for her insightful essay on human rights. The Philip Sargeant Poetry Prize had many submissions of fantastic poetry with Joseph Carbonne’s collection of peoms taking out the first prize. Finally we had the Wigram Allen prize which was done in a new format this year, where students performed their spoken essay at formal hall which was received well by all. Leo Li both spoke engagingly and provided insights into the faults of our education system. The dialectic society would like to thank all the families who generously donated and make these prizes possible.

Film Society was a wild ride in 2017! The committee really grew closer as the year carried on, and screened some amazing films along the way!! We kicked 2017 off with a bang, screening Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in March!!! Other films to follow included Jaws, Dumb and Dumber on April Fools Day, The Shawshank Redemption, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkiban, Harry Potter and the HalfBlood Prince, Terminator 2: Judgement Day and many more!!!! We even found time to squeeze in a few trips to Cinema Nova, where members were treated to Dunkirk, The Ornithologist and The Lego Batman Movie!!!!! Special thanks to our members, all 100 of you who were on the books, for supporting us and coming to all the screenings, and clearly showing how much Trinity College students are interested in film!!!!!! We hope Film Society leaves as much of a lasting impression on our new president, Guy Paul, as it did our old one!!!!!!!!!!!!!

informal arts

This year we • tried to make the game a lot more cut throat and had high eliminations over the first few days until, by the end of the second week, we were left with only 4 people. A tournament was held on the Bul to decide the winner, after the stress of not being able to leave their rooms became too much for most participants, and this resulted in Jack Marozzi being crowned the winner. Overall, it’s been a great year for Games Society and can’t wait for next year with the new committee to see what new •• and exciting events they come up with.

racquets

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Racquets Society has had an ace year, serving its 52 members well with several events. Leo Li and Eliza Chomley took home first prize at the inaugural mixed doubles tournament held at the Royal Park tennis club, winning over Henry Moon and Claudia Trotter. We also teamed up with the Bar to deliver a Wimbledon themed bar night with an open table tennis tournament. A heated grand final saw Lachlan Haig take out the win over a stumbling Sam Tallis. The traditional Harroway mixed doubles tennis competition - held on V-Day - culminated with a face-off between Shaun Ingle/Eliza Chomley and Claudia Trotter/Henry Moon, with power couple Shaun and Eliza crowned champions of the last Trinity sporting event of the year. It is with a mixture of both great pride and heavy hearts that we announce this year as the final year for the Trinity Racquets Society. From now, the Trinity Social Sports Society (TSSS) will hold sporting responsibilities in order to work within the TCAC’s vision for a more inclusive clubs and society set up. This will see the club expand dramatically in numbers while still keeping the same tennis traditions outlined above. All the best for incoming president Henry Moon and the new committee next year.

music

Music Society had another typically great but underappreciated year. Our Pub Band played a couple of VERY casual performances at a host of events throughout both semesters. Our Battle of the Bands team placed equal third with a more deserving Queens. Hildas took out the win in a real head-scratcher that also involved one Stefan Geleta making girls faint by wearing a rash vest and NOT doing any pushups in the green room beforehand. This wasn’t so head-scratch-inducing. We put on a very successful Karaoke Night in collaboration with the Buttery in first semester and there was an infamous Goggle Doc to go along with it. Huge shout out to whatever loser told on me. We as a society didn’t really have much to do with the musical band, but I performed in it, so there’s that. Ummm, oh! We had Big Day In, which was little. Managed to get us a drum kit but not a whole lot else. Started Trinity’s most active Facebook forum (bar the Bursary Exchange), where I talked A LOT about music and had a bunch of faithful followers actually talk back to me. Messrs Tjandra, Kovacs, McMahon and Neville were of a great help throughout. All the best to incoming president Leo Li for next year.

the

choir

110

2017 marks the centenary of the Trinity College Chapel, and the 40th anniversa-

ry of the Choir. This year, the Choir was honoured to receive a new Director, Mr. Chris Watson, member of the Tallis Scholars and former Director of Music from St Edmund Hall, Oxford. We were soon back in the swing of twice-weekly services of Evensong, and we prepared a fabulous lunchtime concert in May, consisting of works from Dyson, Lloyd and Howells. The Choir then contributed several works to a CD, including a debut piece, titled ‘Sunlight Touches the Roses’, written and composed by Trinity Staff, namely Peter Campbell and Katherine Firth. There was also a special 40th anniversary evensong, where old Trinity choral scholars were invited back to sing Parry’s, ‘I was glad’ with great gusto. We soared to Brisbane and Sydney, performing the immense ‘Spem in Alium’, a motet in forty parts by Thomas Tallis. At the Founders and Benefactors Dinner, it was announced that the Choir would be touring to France and the UK during 2018! We now wait excitedly for Advent and some international adventures in the New Year.

the candystripes

the tiger tones

112

2017 has been an incredible year for the all-female all-singing all-dancing sometimes-rap-

ping Candystripes. Lead by our Candie Queen Tessa Moon and our Music Directors Vicki Hofflin and Eliza Kelly, we produced our most diverse repertoire to date. Here I have prepared a series of Haikus to reflect on our year:

Sang at Commencement Five new Candies joined the group

Annual Candies camp Dance parties and Balnarring Lyla peed herself

Bry goes to the States Kate and Bea go to Ireland Vicki loves NZ

We’re reunited It’s time for showcase baby Peace out Candystripes

Through many ups and downs, we managed to put together our most successful showcase yet, with all proceeds going to the RCD Foundation. I’m very proud of how we have grown as a group and contributed to the legacy of the Candystripes and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us. Love Princess Bubblegum xoxo or Caitlin Tjandra

Looking back at the year that has been, the Trinity Tiger Tones have had a year full of amazing experience. Firstly, we welcomed 4 fresh faces into the group in Al Whittle, Harry von Bibra, Joseph Baldwin and Nathan Kovacs and we started the year off with a bang, with our first ever retreat down to the Mornington Peninsula. 2 weeks later we launched into our first performance of the year at El Dorado and putting aside the missing firing of the fireworks, it was a lot of fun. Fast forward a couple of months to our showcase in the dining hall, which was a great success and all those who come thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Our second semester was one of the more challenging ones I have experience in the group with the resignation of our head barber. But as they say, when one door closes another one opens and the group was so fortunate that Stefan Geleta stepped up to the plate and smashed it out of the park. The greatest highlight of the semester was hosting the Trinitones from Trinity College Dublin and being able to put on the most successful concert in Tones history at the Athenaeum Theatre. We shared our music with close to 600 screaming fans. Because of this amazingly successfully concert we have been able to donate $10,000 dollars to our chosen charity beyondblue. And now we come to the end of the year and we have had to say goodbye to 4 more long serving members of the group in Jack Wright, Joseph Percy, Nick Bernardo and Ranald Macky. All of them will be greatly missed. So as the curtain draws on my time as secretary, I’d like to thank everyone who has supported us in 2017 and I can’t wait to see what happens in 2018.

Cheers, Sco. 113
