HISTORIC PRECEDENT - WE WERE WRONG The lead article in the November 1990 edition of the Newsletter (Number 42) reported two historic precedents. Firstly, the election of Joint Senior Students and secondly, the election as Senior Student of a son or daughter of a prior Senior Student. The first did set an historic precedent, but the second did not.

Harry R. Potter was Senior Student in 1915 and was followed by his son Richard(Dick) Potter who was Senior Student in 1949. There are five generations of the Potter family associated with Trinity and we are delighted to confirm that this second historic precedent was set not in 1990, but in 1949. Our apologies for the mistake.

For the past eight years the production of the Trinity College Newsletter has been carried out by the Foundation Office. Following a reduction in the number of staff and a reappraisal of the amount of 'extracurricular' work handled by the Foundation Office it was agreed that the College should take back the responsibility for the editorship and production of the Newsletter. It will now emanate from the Warden's or Dean's Office in conjunction with the Conference Office which is now also responsible for the Friends of Trinity programme. The Foundation will of course continue to produce articles relevant to its own sphere of work.

NEWS OF TRINITY MEMBERS 16 1991 VISITING FELLOW 20

In this issue we feature two photographs from the 1920's decade - a view of Trinity from the Ormond Tower, and the College Oak in disguise. Not a lot has changed at the College! We are grateful to George Haydon ('20) for allowing us to reproduce these and many other photographs for the College archives. While the Warden was soaking up the European sun, second semester began in freezing temperatures under the guidance of the Acting Warden, Jack Clarke, former Vice-Master at Queen's, and the Acting Dean, 'Taffy' Jones ('57), former Senior Student and well-known billiards fan! Jack Clarke will be Acting Warden until the Warden's return in October and 'Taffy' Jones the Acting Dean until the appointment of a full-time Dean to replace Mrs Leith Hancock who retired following a mild stroke at the end of 1990. You will be pleased to know that Leith has made a full recovery. College life is as full as ever. A pictorial record of some of the numerous activities is displayed on pages 4 and 5, as well as scenes on page 10 from the recent Sixties Decade Dinner, where many Trinity members relived their College days. When you receive this Newsletter the College Oak will be coming into leaf and students will be settling down to final preparations for exams.

NEWS FROM THE LEEPER LIBRARY 3

It is always a red letter day when books written by Trinity members are presented to the library. Recently Dr David Jackson, Dr Ross Bastiaan, Dr Joan Stanley-Baker and Mr Tony Buzzard have each given to the Trinitiana collection copies of their own works covering subjects from Gallipoli to the present day. Dr Jackson's The Discovery of Childhood: A Paediatric Triad brings together three prestigious medical orations which he gave between 1966 and 1977. The themes running through the lectures reflect his life as a paediatrician. Dr Bastiaan wrote Gallipoli Plagues to help guide visitors around the Gallipoli Peninsula National Park. Each of the ten bronze plaques has been numbered and the text of his book complements the text on the plaques, making visits to such places as Lone Pine much more meaningful for Australians. Tony Buzzard, together with Raja C Bandaranayake, compiled Multiple Choice Questions in Basic Surgical Sciences, a work which will be especially valuable to medical students in the later years of their course. The inaugural Foundation Fellow, Dr Joan StanleyBaker, presented to the College Library a copy of Artibus Asiae Vol L 3/4, 1990, containing her

publication on "Repainting Wang-Meng: Problems in Accretion". The volume is inscribed 'For Trinity College with affection and gratitude'. In the acknowledgements Dr Stanley-Baker writes; "At the University of Melbourne, I am grateful to the Trinity College Foundation who, in appointing me inaugural Foundation Fellow, released much time from tutorial duties for writing and editing this paper." Among other benefactors of the library Paul Cooper, who now manages the Blackstone Press, in Sydney, has very kindly arranged to give the library a copy of every new title published. As the Blackstone Press specialises in legal work, the Law students will particularly benefit. David Wells has also remembered the Law collection, with a generous donation to buy new editions of key Law textbooks. This year, for the first time, Trinity students are able to dial up the Baillieu Library catalogue. With the help of the Computer Committee, the library obtained the hardware which enables our users to access the Search and Catalyst catalogues of the University of Melbourne library. With the support of the Friends of the Leeper Library, which is so much appreciated, we are able to keep developing both the collection and our services.

H (HAL) ODDIE - 1990) Hal Oddie died on 8 November 1990. Together with Colin Juttner, he instituted the Annual Juttoddie race over the fences of the Bulpadock in the 1930's. This colourful event is still held in the College each year. We are indebted to Colin Juttner for the following words.

T H (Hal) Oddie was born in Ballarat in July 1911 and lived with his family on a farm in the Beaufort district of Victoria. In 1929, at the age of seventeen, he was a freshman at Trinity College, where I first met him more than sixty-one years ago. He proceeded to secure his B.Sc. at the University of Melbourne, which was succeeded by his M.Sc. in 1933. In 1934 he commenced work with the

Commonwealth X-Ray and Radium Laboratories, and settled down to married life. The year 1948 saw the conferring of his Doctorate in Science. In 1952 he was awarded a Fullbright Scholarship and spent much time over the next thirty years in America. 1960 saw him represent Australia in the first Bridge Olympiad in Italy. In 1982 he retired to Cox Harbour in NSW and then to Kew in Victoria. In spite of medical advice forewarning of risk, he journeyed to Coff s Harbour for a bridge convention, and had a massive cerebral haemorage and died on the 4th November, 1990, whilst in the act of dealing out a hand. He was cremated at Coff s Harbour and the music played at his funeral service was "I'm going home ... " and "Auf Wiedersehn". To his three daughters, Sue, Kath and Pam, we offer our sincere condolences.

COLIN JUTTNER

REGINALD MARK VINCENT BLAKEMORE

(1903 - 1991) Reg Blakemore has been known in Trinity, as elsewhere, as a kind, generous and honest man, who loved life and lived it to the full. He entered Trinity from Melbourne Grammar in 1924. His two great sports were rowing and rugby - not necessarily in that order. He rowed (4) in the College crew in 1924 and 1925 and was Captain of the Melbourne University Rugby Union First XV in 1926. The formation of the Victorian Rugby Union was largely due to his efforts. In recent years he was the Senior University Rugby Blue. His passion for rugby never abated. He continued to play in the "Golden Oldies" rugby tournaments and in 1987 in Auckland he received a prize as the oldest player. A graduate in Law, he served with the AIF in Western Australia/New Zealand in the Ordnance Corps, reached the rank of Major and was Assistant to General Milford. After the war he worked for the British Government in Burma, became a farmer on King Island, and later was Administrator of the Baker Medical Research Institute in Melbourne. EVAN

BURGE

His funeral was conducted in the Chapel by the Warden. Peter Maxwell and Geoffrey Vaughan (husband of Reg's daughter Jenny) both spoke of his great personal qualities - his love of sport, his gifts as a speaker, his great kindness and high personal standards. Peter Maxwell recalled his love of quoting from W.E. Henley: I am master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul. The College expresses its sympathy to his wife Trish and daughter Jenny. -.1m-n•p•

EGBERT ARMYTAGE CUNINGHAME FARRANM

(1903 - 1990) 'Berth as he was known within the family in earlier days , and 'Joe' as he came to be known from schooldays onwards, was born in Geelong on 25th November, 1903. He attended Geelong Grammar School, initially in Geelong itself and later at Corio. His prodigious academic attainments took him on scholarships to Trinity College in 1923 in the University of Melbourne where he graduated MB, BS (1928); MD (1931); MS (1933); DGO (1935). He also played for the University Blacks for a number of seasons, and became an enthusiastic tennis player. Later in life he took up lawn bowls. After having gained extensive surgical experience in Melbourne, he sailed for the UK to sit for the FRCS examinations, but contracted malaria en route (from which he would have died, but for his capacity for self-diagnosis and treatment), and then because of the Depression and financial responsibilities for the

younger members of the family had to return immediately to Australia to resume private practice. Joe married Marjorie O'Connor (originally from Perth, WA) in Melbourne in December 1936, and moved to Albury the following year to set up his own practice. He returned to Melbourne in private practice in 1947, and also undertook specialist duties in radiotherapy for a number of years at the Royal Melbourne and Alfred Hospitals. Joe was a founding member of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, and was Chairman of the Victorian Faculty from 1964 - 66. Joe is survived by his son Andrew, and daughter Rosemary Syme. His wife Marjorie died in 1975. Joe married Janet Rasmussen in 1977 (who died in July 1990). He led an active, dutiful life, full of curiosity about knowledge and the causes of things; and died peacefully after a relatively short illness at the Royal Freemason's Homes, Melbourne, on 6th November, 1990.

ANDREW FARRAN

WILLIAM HENRY MOULE (1897 - 1991) Bill Moule died in February at the age of 93. His brother Humphrey was the first Trinity man killed at Gallipoli. Bill himself enlisted but the war ended before he saw active service. Graduating from Trinity in Law he entered the family firm of which he was a partner from 1939 - 1958.

Albury, taking an interest in bird-watching, family visits and a passionate interest in golf. A memorial and thanksgiving service for his life was held in the Chapel of Melbourne Grammar School on 19 February and the eulogy was given by Peter Hay. Other relatives present were Misses Valentine and Molly Leeper, Jim Court and Mrs P.M. Hudson, who gave a bible reading. GALA FLEUR-DE-LYS DINNER 1992

In his active years he contributed both to his old school, Melbourne Grammar, serving on the School Council, and to his old College. He was a member of the Trinity College Council for many years and was responsible for the negotiations which have enabled the College to borrow money from the bank using an unregistered mortgage on the buildings and grounds as security. planning to give a lecture to the TEC students on his next visit to Melbourne. Ideals of compassion were dear to him. He often spoke about looking "with the eye of pity". He had no delusions about the success of human enterprises, and he despised those who made gods of wealth, power and ambition.

CHARLES MANNING HOPE CLARK ('1915

1)

The death of few Australians has been so extensively marked and honoured as that on 23 May 1991 of Manning Clark. The College is the proud possessor of his History of Australia and his autobiography, donated by the author himself. Opinions will differ about whether he can be described as "Australia's greatest historian". He was certainly a morally courageous patriot and a gifted writer with an intensely personal vision of the story and ideals of this land. Like his heroes, Ned Kelly, Henry Lawson and the Anzacs, Manning Clark has helped to build up our national image and understanding of ourselves.

In Trinity he is remembered affectionately as a great student cricketer. Few could rival his grace and skill with the bat once he had his eye in. His brother, Russell, Senior Student in 1936, has remained a constant and welcome presence in Trinity. Despite different outlooks on politics, religion and our British traditions, the two brothers were always very close. Russell's wife, Manning's sister-in-law, Eirene Clark, is now Assistant Leeper Librarian, having been the Leeper Librarian for three years. She and Russell celebrated their golden wedding on 28 June 1991.

At the time of his death he was President of the Union of the Fleur-de-Lys. At his election a little over a year ago, he spoke in Hall about breaking free of the "dead hand of the past". Perhaps he paid too little attention to our traditional values and heritage, but he also saw that we must not rest content with these but press on into a new future. Such developments as the Trinity Education Centre, which direct our attention away from Europe to Asia, delighted him. At the time of his death, he was EVAN

This year's Trinity Foundation Studies students are drawn from •Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The Foundation Year is a pre-university course specially designed to prepare overseas students for university study in Australia.

Dr David O'Sullivan ('44) and his wife have invited small groups of Foundation students to stay at their Grampians property for occasional weekends. This gives our overseas students a great opportunity to experience Australian life, and take unique memories back to Asia. We thank them for their hospitality.

Trinity families with overseas friends or contacts who intend to send their children overseas for tertiary education may like to consider letting them know about the existence of the Trinity Foundation Year option. Further information is available from the Trinity Education Centre.

Other Trinity families who may like to welcome Foundation students into their homes are invited to contact the Executive Director of the Education Centre, Dr Denis White, on (03) 349 0130. The students love these opportunities and are exceedingly rewarding guests.

As at the end of July 1991, 120 former Trinity students and friends of the College have indicated their willingness to write a bequest into their wills. Although some have volunteered the amount proposed, this question is not asked of an intended bequestor. Some 143 others are in the course of making up their minds. Of those who have disclosed their readiness to make a bequest to the Trinity College Foundation or Trinity Theological School, the following 72 persons have allowed us to publish their names. Trinity is abundantly grateful for this splendid promise of future support. If you would like to follow up the idea of leaving a legacy to Trinity, contact Archdeacon Stan Moss, the Bequest Officer on (03) 349 0115.

VICTORIAN CHURCHES From the humblest tent church to the massy stone cathedral, Victorian churches have reflected their congregations and communities. The National Trust was concerned to establish a framework within which these churches could be compared and assessed, and to accurately describe their architecture. With this recent publication, over 400 are reviewed and the Chapel at Trinity College is included. The Chapel is considered to be an early and outstanding example of the work of North and Williams. The work has been carried out by a project officer, Marie Moore, under a committee whose members are John Maidment, a church historian; Anne Neale, an architectural historian of the University of Melbourne; and Dr Walter Phillips of La Trobe University, a religious historian. The Chairman of the committee was Dr Miles Lewis, an architectural historian. The bulk of the work consists of an illustrated inventory of 409 churches, each accompanied by a citation.

ROBYN LEA - PHOTOGRAPHY

The most well-attended decade dinner to date was held at Trinity in May. 170 members of the Sixties Decade and their guests enjoyed a delightful meal and excellent wines. Refreshment of a musical nature was generously lavished upon the guests by that inimitable duo Peter Field ('61) and Nicholas Alexander ('61). Their wonderful performance was followed later in the evening by one of Trinity's more colourful sons, Carrillo Gantner ('63), who regaled the assembled crowd with telling tales of adventure and serious social comment: ' ... 1976, Malcolm Fraser's first year in office, marked the high point of public subsidy for the arts. In real dollar terms, it has declined markedly since then, and unless this government finds the J-curve before the R-word flushes them down the S-bend, this situation doesn't look like changing ... "

" ... In Australia we don't often persecute writers, actors or directors. It's easier to ignore them or to cut the already meagre investment they receive. When economists are kings, it's not surprising that they prefer to ignore those who choose to hold the mirror of truth to their follyy ... " ... The theatre, like all the arts, is not a peripheral luxury for good times only. Governments, the corporate sector, and you personally as privileged members of this community, should welcome and support Australian creativity. It's tax deductible, it's entertaining, it's non-fattening and full of fibre. You can enjoy it straight from the Playbox, or you can shop from the huge smorgasbord of other pleasures. You will be repaid many times over. As Hamlet said about the actors on their arrival at Elsinore: 'Let them be well used, for they are the abstract and the brief chronicles of the time."
