2023 ANNUAL REPORT
WARDEN’S REPORT
It was great to see Trinity College thrive in 2023, as demand for our offerings across all divisions bounced back post-COVID. In fact, our programs and services were so popular we had to grapple with a rapid increase in numbers of enrolled students (which exceeded our projections) and hired 190 new staff. We also commenced our major Kitchens Precinct redevelopment project – put on hold during COVID – which saw us begin expanding our Dining Hall to fit all 380 of our residential students at once, upgrading our kitchen and café facilities, and improving the flow and aesthetics of our grounds by renewing the Vatican Lawn.
In 2023, our Board also approved the development of a 2024–2030 strategic plan, which will help set the agenda for the next seven years to ensure we continue to thrive as a College. Thank you to everyone who believed in the work and vision of Trinity College throughout the year. Here are our 2023 updates from each area of the College.
PATHWAYS SCHOOL
In 2023, we saw a large-scale return of international students into our Foundation Studies programs. Despite budgeting for only 700 student commencements, we eventually enrolled 1083 students, representing 25 countries. Thanks to the increased demand, we decided to re-sign the lease on our teaching facilities at 200 Victoria Street (which we had relinquished during COVID), and decommissioned our teaching space at 715 Swanston Street, as these facilities were considered past their use-by date.
By April 2023, all students had returned to face-to-face teaching, although there were some clear impacts upon the students’ academic skills and abilities as a result of them completing a proportion of their secondary school years within COVID-affected learning conditions. Similarly, students coming to Australia after the pandemic years were slightly more fragile than those we taught pre-COVID, with additional social and emotional supports required.
RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE
Our Residential College was at full capacity in 2023, having received 404 applications for 147 places. Applications were up by almost 3% from the previous year, and 186 students returned, which put our retention rate at 73%. We provided financial assistance to 197 students, totalling $3.1 million in scholarships.
We delivered 451 academic one-on-one consultations totalling approximately 902 hours (well above our 2022 figure) and 195 tutorial subjects (also exceeding those offered in 2022) as part of our tutorial program. We also offered a range of on-campus events and activities, including Fireside Chats, Career Connect events and our first-ever Careers Day in August. A range of Trinity alumni attended this event to share their career pathway experiences with the current Trinity cohort.
Students continued to show strong interest in shaping our student experience through their involvement in student leadership. This was demonstrated by the 38% of students who intended to return in 2024 applying for a student coordinator position and 28% of students entering their final year applying for a TCAC leadership position.
We also held 48 small group tours alongside the two main intercollegiate and University of Melbourne open days, plus attended 21 expos and visited 35 schools and key stakeholders as part of our recruitment campaign.
THEOLOGICAL SCHOOL
In 2023, there were 132 students enrolled across the various programs of the Theological School, consisting of 27 undergraduates, 92 postgraduates, one research master’s student, and 12 PhD candidates.
In addition to the regular curriculum offered on our Parkville campus, the Theological School also offered a suite of intensives – including two New Testament subjects, and a canon law subject – in Sydney, in partnership with the St James’ Institute, as part of our Trinity in Sydney program.
We had 30 graduands at the University of Divinity’s March graduation ceremony, which was held in St Patrick’s Cathedral. In addition, five students were ordained to the Order of Deacons in February, and six were ordained to the Order of Priests in November.
Faculty research publications included a Festschrift in honour of Professor Dorothy Lee, entitled Many believed Because of Her Testimony (Wipf & Stock). The school’s major research project – ‘Figuring the Enemy’ – continued to produce significant results, with a conference in June at the University of St Andrews, and two sessions devoted to the project at the American Academy of Religion, in November.
Also in November, Fergus King was promoted to Associate Professor in the University of Divinity.
ALUMNI NETWORK
In 2023, we had more than 6000 people attend 56 events in 12 cities across eight countries. Our ever-popular Drinks Under the Oak alumni event attracted nearly 400 people, and our Founders and Benefactors dinner was a terrific celebration, where we showcased a series of videos that highlighted the incredible stories of 12 of our alumni, and the role Trinity has played in their lives.
Our cash donations for the year totalled $3.33 million, generously gifted by 500 donors, and pledges of $3.28 million were received.
By the end of the year, we had 3735 people signed up to our online networking platform, My Trinity Connect (mytrinityconnect.com.au), whereby 58% of our community have expressed interest to be volunteers, including via event hosting and offering internships and mentoring to students.
As always, it was pleasing to see Trinity College flourishing throughout the year, and that’s thanks to our dedicated staff, wonderful students, and, of course, our supportive community, the strength of which really sets Trinity apart. Thank you to everyone who has helped make Trinity College the incredible place it is.
