Welcome to the spring edition of Rez Magazine It has been a hectic few months since the last edition. Not only have Voodoo & I been exploring wide aspects of the Second Life experience but we have also been grounding Rez and our branding. Early in 2008 Rez Magazine got itself a facelift, with updated website (http://www.rezmagazine.co.uk) and blog (http://rezmagazine.blogspot.com/). During the updates, we took the chance to modify our mission statement and some of the goals of Rez Magazine. Rez Magazine is an independent source for reviews and reports from the world of Second Life. Whether it is an exploration report or an interview with one of the many talented and colourful people that make second life, Rez offers you clear, concise, and honest opinions. Not always to everyone’s agreement, we speak candidly and only when we have something to report on. We established Rez with the ethos for independent, creative and informative articles. We have both realized the desire to grow our little corner of the web to reach more Second Life avatars. Rez is a not-for-profit magazine and this will always remain; Voodoo and I want to grow our creativity not fill our pockets. To cover some of the investment we are hoping to achieve we are looking to recoup some of the expense by offering advertising space in the in-world edition only. Rez Magazine will never be bought. Our opinions remain ours NOT our advertisers however we understand that the advertising linden is an important one for our growth. We hope the introduction of some advertising and coverage of Rez will bring more diversity to our pride and joy. So, what’s in this edition for you to read I hear you shout! Voodoo takes a trip around the world using sl, interviews content creators and takes a look at one of the recent topical issues of trademarks. Trinity helps you texture creations, poses the question where there line of SL & RL should be and looks into the WindLight viewer as it goes mainstream. Together we discuss IP Theft a topic hot on the lips of many people and The Trin & Voo Show makes its spectacular first appearance in Rez by killing the stars! Sky’s your imagination

Nearly a year ago now, our favorite watermelon-loving Linden, Torley, announced to us the plans for a very shiny addition to the Second Life Client. This would be codenamed ‘WindLight’ and would contain new atmospheric rendering capabilities. Linden Lab acquired Windward Mark Interactive LLC. The company already developing the WindLight product for use in three dimensional environments for example flight simulators and gaming. WindLight entered into a long Second Life First Look & Release Candidate process and in April of this year reached the masses when it became the main viewer.

WindLight brings us amazing skies along with some other new additions; for instance Avatar Imposters and Glow. Glow is a whole new lighting effect for objects which will soon be scriptable. Avatar Imposters on the other hand help reduce lag by only drawing avatars beyond a set

I have personally been using the WindLight First Look client for a long time, but as WindLight spreads its wings on our grid I contacted Andromega Volare (http://www. flickr.com/photos/andromega/) a wonderful Second Life photographer, and Halden Beaumont (http://www.vimeo.com/756361) a Machinima creator, who both embraced the new dimensions that WindLight has to offer, and asked them a few questions. How has WindLight changed your experience of Second Life? Andromega Volare : WL is a very important add-on for me, especially for landscapes the mood can be gorgeous and impressive. Not only the light settings I don´t want to miss in SL, the clouds and the water-reflections are a must-have too! Halden Beaumont: WindLight has brought about an enhanced level of reality to the Second Life experience. Login using the WindLight viewer and the technology afforded makes the user feel closer to everything, as it approximates to the real world and it expands the options you have to create a precise atmosphere for a specific scenario. Since its WindLight’s first release, I only use that viewer. Once you experience it, you will not want to log in using a previous viewer. How has WindLight changed your content creations within Second Life? Andromega Volare : With WL you have endless possibilities of setting weather and lights, I spend hours with snap-shooting the same motive in different variations. Usually I do this in high resolution, so I have to clean my hard drive from time to time cause it is messed up with gorgeous WindLight shots. Halden Beaumont: I often need to review details, especially those connected with lighting and the environmental settings of a location. I produce many videos, where the main goal is to convey the potential of Second Life. Many times, the audience consists of persons who are skeptical of the Second Life platform; they perceive it as a “game”, unable to conceive it as a powerful tool for communication and dialog. Once I began using WindLight, the videos I produce provide a much brighter and appellative representation of Second Life. Using WindLight as a tool in my Machinima productions, allows me to convey the feeling of Second Life, demonstrating that Second Life is more than a “place”. It’s difficult to make persons who have not actually gone “in world”, understand what Second Life is, to have them feel the essence of it. “WindLight allows the viewer to feel


the “wind” upon their skin, with their eyes”. Once a friend told me about WindLight that is something that cannot be fully described, merely felt, I guess she is completely right about that. How do you feel WindLight will change the average user’s Second Life experience? Andromega Volare : Most of the users will love WindLight, if they use the sliders of the environment editor. Some will hate WindLight, because they can´t use their face lights anymore or their skin is too bright and looses texture. Halden Beaumont: The emotions felt by users in Second Life are quite real. WindLight expands these for the viewer. Second Life is evidence that “believing is seeing”. If you have technology which can expand that evidence, the experience will be richer, affecting every sense. The experience becomes far more realistic and in many cases, much deeper. Do you have any complaints about WindLight rendering as it is now a main viewer? Andromega Volare : I don´t really have complaints, but there is something what perhaps could be added in later versions of WL. First thing: no more prim clouds, I really hate them; a key to hide them would be fantastic. I wish there would be a button to switch off all the face lights of the avatars on my screen. The amplitude of the waves could be greater, and thunderstorms with flashes of lightening would be cool. Halden Beaumont: I had a huge one, but they finally corrected in this latest release :) It was a bug with joystick flycam, where the local lights start pulsing and the shooting scenes become most of the time obsolete. But they finally corrected. WindLight is a spectacular addition to the whole Second Life experience so without much further ado, get in world and start tinkering with your sky settings, you will not be disappointed. What a difference a name makes

For any resident of Second Life, the official Second Life blog at http://www. secondlife.com/ is a must read site (almost as much as this one). It is there that you can find out the latest happenings at Linden Labs, the holders of our virtual destiny, the rulers of our metaverse, and sometimes, the cause of our annoyances (transactions unreliable two days in a row, at precisely the same time after a new simulator roll out, you say? Oh joy!). The big story this past two weeks was that Linden Labs, in a stance of defiance against a perceived threat to their corporate image, set out new rules about what you can and cannot do with the words “Second Life” “Linden” “SL” and “InSL”. The full rules can be found http://secondlife.com/corporate/brand/ trademark/index.php and http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/04/01/more-onthe-trademark-policy/, but generally boil down to stating that from now on, companies and websites, inworld or in rl, must not use Second Life or Linden as their company name or website address, as this could confuse people into thinking they are affiliated with LL. They are, however, allowed to use “SL” or “InSL”, as LL have given “Special permission” for you to use these trademarks they own, AS LONG AS you “use “SL” or “inSL” (but not both) in combination with your own word mark... or in combination with a name that uses at least two generic nouns”. So, what’s so bad about that, you may ask? Well, consider that some of the biggest and most celebrated websites supporting, enriching and adding to your SL experience have now technically found themselves operating in direct opposition to LL’s wishes, despite having done nothing other than to work hard, and as far as they knew, with the blessing of LL. From the most popular SL shopping site, SLExchange, to the most popular social networking site, SLProfiles, to Second Life news sites such as SL-Newspaper or the Second Life Herald, many people are crying out, not knowing what they did wrong, and why the feeling from our inworld masters went from welcoming with open arms, to a decidedly cold shoulder, so quickly. To get a better perspective into exactly what the situation is for these companies, I popped some questions to JamesT Juno, CEO of http://www.sl-newspaper.com/ and Yo Brewster, the man behind http://www.slprofiles.com/:


Voodoo: What was your reactions when you found out about these new rulings? JamesT Juno: Have they gone mad? What is wrong with us promoting the beautiful world of secondlife as we have been doing for over a year now? Yo Brewster: My initial reaction was one of disbelief especially since Linden Lab has always promoted sites which included the SL abbreviation in their domain name in the past. I was on vacation at the time this was announced with very limited access to email but did receive several emails from other site owners that are basically facing the same issue. I believe many among us were hoping that Linden Lab would change their mind but I believe it’s fair to say that Linden Lab isn’t willing to listen in this case. According to individuals within LL, they’re getting overwhelmed with emails (keep on sending them!) which is why many of us have a hard time getting a hold of people within Linden Lab to talk about this issue. Voodoo Buwan: What are your plans, bearing in mind that under the letter of these new rules, your websites are apparently no longer legal? Yo Brewster: I’m actually not sure yet. To me SLProfiles was a project I created for fun and now with all these little rules it becomes like a job, which would be fine if I was actually making money with it! Making the necessary changes and relaunching the site under a new domain name is a lot of work and it will take a very long time to get this site out there with a new name on the web. I understand we have 90 days to comply with these rules, which clearly means we’ve got to make a decision on this in the very near future. JamesT Juno: Well - I don’t know if it’s illegal - The website was registered before the new rules - and we got added to the resident part of the official secondlife website under our name so that’s a kind of OKAY too - And we got a promo pack with logo’s sent some time ago to use for our publications, so everything points to “Hey, we accept you and the way you run your newspaper”


Voodoo Buwan: And if they do come after you, and claim your site breaches their copyright or infringes on their trademark? JamesT Juno: What can I do ? Not able to pay for change of name and reprogramme 500+ vendors out there in secondlife. We will see when it gets to that point - I still have good hopes that it will work out Voodoo Buwan: Finally, if you could send out a message to Linden Labs regarding this, what would you say? JamesT Juno: Dear Lindens, Is it THAT wrong that we try to promote “your” secondlife as a fun thing to do? Is it that wrong to make it OUR secondlife? Yo Brewster: Consistency please - that’s all I’m pleading for. Will Linden Lab adjust their rules again in the future forcing us to change our domain name again? If you did it once, what tells us you won’t do it again? So there you have it. Businesses built on the principles originally set out by Linden Labs, embracing, celebrating and making Second Life their own, now made to suffer, as they are thought to be too close. But the other question of course, is that just because LL say this, does it make it law? Last year, in a very high profile court case, the SL Terms of Service were declared to be unenforceable in a US court of law (and since, as we are constantly reminded, LL are a US company, that’s the court to watch). So, the final question is this: Which company or website owner is going to be brave enough to stand their ground after the 90 days, call LL’s possible bluff and see if they can defeat the Linden Gods in the courts, to settle who’s Second Life it is? Or will it even come to that, for, as Yo Brewster pointed out to me in an aside, these guys (http://www.sl.com/) may wish to get involved in the debate over who has the SL trademark in the first place....


The F.A.T. of the land

It occured to me some time ago that business travel regarding the world of Secondlife is very much a one way street. RL businesses come into SL to try to get a little publicity or money out of our little world. Journalists come in to investigate. RL cars, clothes, books and more get reproduced inworld, for our avatars to own. And of course, sl celebrities, even those who are successful business people, are only ever famous inworld. A musician may draw huge crowds inworld, but no one has been discovered from here, and you still end up playing to half empty bars in rl. There are some mavericks that are trying to break these rules. People who are building a foundation in sl, and striking out from there with their aim to make it in the real world. One such innovator is Alfred Kabuki, the founder and designer of F.A.T. Designs, one of my personal favourite sl clothing manufacterers, who is not only making it big inworld, with a dedicated following of fans clamoring for each and every new product he brings out, but on the one year aniversary of the label’s launch inworld, is looking to release the clothes that people have been draping their avatars inworld, into the real world, so you can dress yourself as well as you avatar. I caught up with Alfred, for a few words about how it’s been going, his experiences, and his plans: Voodoo: You have a very definite style to your designs. Where do you find your inspiration? Alfred Kabuki: Hehehe... nice question because I was talking before to a girlfriend and she said I should say that I get all my inspiration from her.. It was just a joke, but sometimes she was getting me in the mood to create something... ;) Most of our inspiration we have from stylez we like to wear ourselves... I also get the inspiration of the memebrs ofthe f.a.t. designz team.. because of it’s really the team, like henric, betty, juke, iq, and some cool others... that makes f.a.t. to what it is...


Voodoo: So you draw on rl fashion too? Alfred Kabuki: Yes... I do sometimes shirts in rl as well... so we start also to adapt some of our sl fashion a bit into rl.. So we are starting a rl -shirtshop as well... coming soon also on our new webpage. Voodoo: Yes, what was the inspiration behind bringing your sl designs to rl? Was it something that people were asking for, or was it something you wanted to do yourself? Alfred Kabuki: I just wanted to do it myself, because I wanted to do a bit different to others.. not going with a rl label into sl.. ;) Voodoo: Taking a popular sl style into rl instead? Alfred Kabuki: Its hard.. but on some things I think it is possible... So we don’t sell tattoos there.... It should be just a little bit rl benefit for others here in sl... Voodoo: So, did you have any rl fashion design experience before starting F.A.T. inworld? Alfred Kabuki: yes I designed some shirts before. I love to create things that are used and sometimes loved by others Voodoo: How has SL helped you expand on your desire to be a designer? Has it just been a new way of getting seen, or has it helped your designing? Alfred Kabuki: It helped me designing.. yes... but I was designing also before stuff like flyers for parties or also a lot of advertising material for other companies Voodoo: Yes, your designs have a lot of ties to the underground dance scene, and you seem to have a good following in some of the hipper clubs in sl.. Was that intentional? Alfred Kabuki: Yes... we are working good together with some very cool clubs... and as well I love the underground dance scene and that gives me inspirations as well.. I love for myself statements like ... “last night I fucked the djs wife�.. not otherwise.. ;) I also always try to break rules somehow.. and try to find a way to make it possible...


Voodoo: Absolutely... a lot of the slogans have a rebellious streak... Have you ever thought of a slogan to put on a shirt, and then thought “No, that’s too much?” Alfred Kabuki: yes... sure... bur here in sl.. is this border easier to cross... Voodoo: So you can get away with things in sl you couldn’t in rl? Alfred Kabuki: you can try it easier here... to put also harder statements on this.. I have some stuff also in my inv somewhere that I think.. hmmm maybe also to hard for sl... but maybe one day I will also bring them out.. ;) Voodoo: Has being able to experiment in sl helped you take more risks with the stuff you are releasing in rl? Alfred Kabuki: yes absolutely. It is a great testing platform... its cool to get some response and feedback here from the peoples... Voodoo: So, finally, what advice would you give to any other budding designers in sl? Alfred Kabuki: they should design what they like or love to have themselves, and not only try to copy something that is already available on the market.. ;) For more info about F.A.T. When does SecondLife cease being a game?

by Trinity Dechou For many people Second Life offers the absolute best form of escapism that money and laws allow. Second Life is a place you can be exactly who you want to be, and do what you want to do. Without being constrained by all the stereotypes society forces on us. Within the hallowed walls of Second Life, you can be anything from a married housewife to a private dancer or even a top earning business man or woman. Male; female, human; animal, adult or child: really the choice is entirely yours. However, when does Second Life cease to be a game? For many people, that line is clouded by massive grey areas, where no-one actually knows. With real life media organisations adding to the frenzy, hyping that your Second Life experience is filled with sex craved lunatics waiting to murder their latest victim it would be no surprise that more people need to take a step back and examine when enough is enough. Many people play Second Life to escape the constraints they face in real life. However, voice introduced a whole new dimension to the game play; you are a real life person talking as your avatar, combine that with real life companies flurrying in their masses to be part of Second Life, the edges become fuzzy. Stir in people forming relationships, moving across states and even countries to begin real life relationships you have a hot pot, seconds away from boiling out of control. When you sign up for your virtual representation I would assume very few actually gave any forethought as to what will happen to you. Organising events in real life round your Second Life commitments and even falling in love are just some of the surprises that can be in store. I know when I signed up for Trinity Dechou I never gave any thought for the friendships and relationships I would build in world. The friends you make in Second Life are quite often as ‘real’ as any real life friends. How does the death of a friend affect you? You may not know that person in real life, you may not even know where they live or their name, but does that mean your friendship and your feelings should be lessened? Personally I feel a second life avatar is often an extension of a real life person. I may not look like Trinity but she is me through and through. For many people, Second Life may start as a game but very quickly becomes much more. When millions of dollars are spent, hearts and feelings are broken


or hurt; the concept of this being a simple game fades away. While thinking about this subject I asked some of my friends: When does SecondLife cease being a game? From 6 people I got very different replies here they are: “when it hurts” “I think when real money gets involved” “I think when you develop friendships” “SL is a game? I “play” SL as an escape from reality but I don’t think of it as a game. There’s no way to “win” SL.... no scoring points or defeating adversaries or however you wanna think of it.” “I think sl is always a game of sorts because there’s no face to face, I guess it moves away from that when you really meet...i mean people know there are real people behind the avatars, but still they don’t treat people or act themselves exactly like they would rl, in general...i mean some ppl may be exactly to the dot what they say portray themselves to be on SL, but the majority come here to be something they cant be or find something they don’t have rl....so its always a game..” “I assume you mean, when it stops being a game of fun. personally, I never treated it as a “Game” since I started here. To me, it’s an “extension” to my RL. I have friends here, a business and career, an income. I have fun, romance and relationships. To me, it’s a bad day when I do treat SL as a “Game” and stop being who I am here online, when I no longer care about things, or people online. I think it stops being a “Game” when you take SL too seriously. When your RL begins to suffer and you start losing your identity between RL and SL. When things in SL affect you so much (such as lost friends, lost loves, arguments and fights) that it affects your real self. When you have kinda crossed the line of virtual and real life, I think it’s time to step back and reevaluate things within your life and see how it’s affecting your health and mental being. :)” Personally I would suggest that there is a line between RL and SL: a very thin gray one. In an environment where you can build friendships, explore loves and build your dream house surely that gray line is only recognisable by logic. Logic suggests that when something is too good to be true it quite often is. The only downfall however, in my logic, is that for many people, logic itself can be on the other side of the gray line and just out of reach.


The unfortunate death of Trin & Voo

Voodoo : Ms Trinity and myself are both experienced and intrepid explorers of Second Life. We leave no virtual stone unturned, no alley unexplored.... and therefore when we heard of a way in SL to explore the Afterlife, we said our prayers, and looked into what was needed for such an out of body experience. Trinity : We asked the questions and purchased the so called “afterlife” temp rezzing experience... disregarded the instructions (as you do) and rezzed..... away we go Voodoo : For any less tech minded among us..... this temp rez malarky gizmoness means that this device basically builds it’s own world and experience, through..... magic as far as I’m concerned Trinity : Yes dear...... Aaaanyway.... you rez a guillotine and sign your life away to the extremely sharp and shiny blade.... I stood by and watched voodoo’s head come clean off and then signed myself up for the same experience Voodoo : Since we were on Trin’s land, she did me first, to keep control over the proceedings or at least, that was her excuse Trinity : You know how much of a control freak I am......Aaaanyway off with your head and away into a star filled sky with much floatyness


Voodoo : With very manly feather wings fluttering all the way Trinity : Manly???? You didn’t look very manly to me... Voodoo : Once we both made it up to inky blackness, we landed, and found that an eerie white area was appearing around us Trinity : Yes we know you are allergic to nice clean white surroundings.... Voodoo : *Shudder* Trinity : While holding Voodoo and telling him all would be ok we walked through the nice pearly gates Voodoo : MY EYES! Trinity : There there. We arrived into a tunnel where the options were clear..... Heaven or Hell.... Thinking of the Microsoft slogan “where would you like to go today” our obvious choice was to hell Voodoo : Well.... people keep telling us to go there, so only polite to oblige Trinity : People may tell you...... but never me. Voodoo : Yes, dear.... anyway... we ended up in a waiting area.. Very pretty... full of restful water to float in, and lots of the kind of pictures I normally see on friend’s hash tins. Glowing magic dolphins, and the like Trinity : I thought these images brought out your rash? Voodoo : After the white room, this was the lesser evil. And besides, it didn’t last that long


Trinity : It certainly did.... the calmness faded the room became dark.... it was now my time to worry.... images started to appear that worried me... the lovely clear blue water turned to blood... evil eyes and horns appeared on the walls..... Voodoo : Ah, home

Trinity : I had to leave....... I couldn’t cope.... where was the door.... the images of 80’s vampire films came flooding back...... get me out Voodoo : Yes, since the evil was upon us, we bravely and courageously ran into the light Trinity : Yes, and into a room filled with falling coffins..... Now to me it seemed obvious when coffins came crashing down about your head you steered clear.... shame Voo’s satellite navigation system was broke.....

Voodoo : You haven’t lived until you’ve been knocked about a room by flying coffins as you’re trying to make a run for the stairs out

Trinity : Well I managed to make it through without being thrashed off a wall with a coffin.. I made it up the stairs relatively intact and into a graveyard.... bloody marvelous Voodoo : Once I finally made it to the graveyard, I decided to take a closer look, being the curious cat I am. This led to me falling through a grave, to be smacked by coffins once more! Which was nice.... Trinity : Well it was funny for me who watched again as you ping ponged off the walls... Heading into the light once more we found ourselves at a replica Stonehenge


Voodoo : I noticed some poseballs, and forgetting the first rule of SL (“don’t jump on unfamiliar poseballs”) I climbed on. Unfortunately, these we some form of kinky s&m poses, with me being bound over a plinth... so Trin naturally jumped on another in the hope of a chance to beat me about a bit Trinity : Well seeing your body thrown over a stone was apparently too much for me and I had to know... unfortunately during this mini adventure some druids decided to pop along and do a little chanting.... Voodoo : This freaked me out more than anything else (chanting.... never good), so this time I was the one sprinting for the door Trinity : was that Kate Bush I heard......... Voodoo : Kate I can cope with.... cloaked circling monks less so Trinity : Meanwhile..... Our next destination was a meeting area with fountains of blood, flames and some nice cozy cuddles poses.... however following our previous experience Voo wasn’t really up for testing the poses

Trinity : Yes I know you began shaking again.... off to the exit then which took us to the end of our hellish journey and to a little village street Voodoo : However, this journey’s end, gave us another option... we’d been to Hell.... what about Heaven? Trinity : Well it couldn’t get much more scary .... can it? Our first destination in Heaven was a lovely cloud and sky filled area, you could imagine the doves fluttering by while little clouds carried us up..... ok so I was wrong it could get a whole LOT scarier


Voodoo : As a man of a well documented fear of falling, you can imagine my joy at having to walk around on barely there wisps of clouds, 400 feet above the ground. Very pretty, from what I saw through half closed eyes though Trinity : He was scared of falling I was scared of the niceness of it all so we fled once more into the light and onto a little paradise island, cozy camp fire, some more poses we didn’t test and such like Voodoo : A lovely little desert island... and me without my favorite records... and we might have stopped to hang out and drink from coconuts, if we weren’t on such a mission Trinity : None of your desert island discs, they belong in Hell thank you very much.... Onwards Christian soldiers and onto the igloo snow filled world that followed Voodoo : This area came with a rather nice freebie: a pair of ice skates, which I promptly put on, and developed my new favorite game... Trin Jumping Trinity : Torvel and Dean we are not, but he enjoyed jumping over me while I fired snowballs in his general direction.. It amused me no end...

Trinity : …Where we ended up in my own idea of hell with massive never ending spiral stairs.... which we had to lag up without falling off... arriving at the top I waited on Voo (who fell off) Voodoo : Again... and again....


Trinity : And again..... Deciding I had waited long enough I threw myself into the water and onto a raft.... trying to see if I could catch sight of Tom Hanks or Wilson.... Voodoo : I think I need to never try and pilot another sl vehicle as long as I live Trinity : Well since u can’t work the general direction of your own legs then why even try to drive something??? It makes NO sense Voodoo : And so to the final stop on the tour of Heaven... a mirror image of the final stage in Hell, only this chat place was more steam and water that blood and flames Trinity : And yet he still wouldn’t try the poses...... Around the World through SL

So there I was, sitting in my little abode, wondering what to do on another night in SL. Do I go and throw away more money on shopping, hang out at another club that claims to be the greatest thing ever, and yet bores me to sleep with the same old cliches, or maybe go join the next demonstration about an announcement in a Linden blog (“Classifieds restricted to the Classified search? THE HORROR!). So, what do you do when you’re bored of the same old same old? You get away from it all. I decided to take a trip! Since the only limitations in SL are often your own imagination, I wondered, is it possible to take a round the world trip, using Second Life as your travel agent? I printed out an atlas, planned my route, and with my trusty backpack on, and the place search acting as my satellite navigation, set off across the virtual globe Being a Brit, I decided that London, England would be the start and end point of my travels. I set off from Imperial College London - (http:// slurl.com/secondlife/Imperial%20 College%20London/78/96/27), the SL home of the eponymous college, and a home base for any of it’s students working here in the metaverse. It also has some gorgeous recreations of some of the landmarks on the rl campus, such as the Queen’s Tower. From there, I hopped across the Channel, into France. And in SL, this meant going to Champs Elysee (http://slurl.com/secondlife/ Champs%20Elysee/130/70/24). This place has a lovely avenue of shops, but it’s crowning glory is a beautiful recreation of the Arc De Triumph, which you can go inside, and climb up to the top in. When you get up there, there is, strangely enough, and zip line, which you can jump on and slide your way all the way back to the ground. After enjoying a ride which vertigo would not allow me in real life, I continued on my travels.


From France, I then crossed the south-east border into Italy. I found myself in Venice, or Venice Passion - (http://slurl.com/secondlife/ Busby/46/145/69) to be exact. After the excitement of death slides, I decided to chill out, sitting in front of an Italian cafe, enjoying the sunshine and scenery, and watching couples sailing up the streets on Gondolas. It’s a truly beautiful place, and well worth a wander, since at least this Venice is not in any kind of threat from global warming, unless that is the next stage in making SL realistic after Windlight. Sneaking across the Mediterranean Sea, between Europe and the African Continent, we then skipped across to Greece, the birthplace of Democracy and Philosophy and much more besides. Greece has an official sim (http://slurl.com/secondlife/ GreeceOfficial/128/24/24) with faithful recreations of some of it’s historic landmarks such as the Colosseum and the Parthenon (pictured below). It also has tour guides in attendance often, and myself and my travelling companion who had joined my trip enjoyed a tour, explaining the relevance of the fantastic builds, and educating us in the history of this fine nation. Continuing to hop across the Mediterranean Sea, my next port of call was Turkey, or rather Turkiye - (http://slurl.com/secondlife/ Turkiyel/128/128/0). In SL, this is an eclectic mix of of beautiful traditional buildings, and a funky beach area with a very snazzy waterslide. My travelling companion did find that she was being mobbed by a swarm of apparently eligible bachelors wanting to steal her away from me and convince her to visit their fine nation,


but perhaps this was because she wasn’t wearing the free, but not mandatory, head-dress that you can pick up there, and the sight of her unadorned head was driving them crazy. Once they realised she was with me, they backed off, and we made our escape. From Turkey, we then headed North, entering the biggest country in our trip, Russia, and where else in SL would you go to experience Russia in all it’s post-communist glory, than Moscow Island - (http:// slurl.com/secondlife/Moscow%20 Island/66/184/22), where not only can you gasp in wonderment and the fantastic architecture come to life, but you can even go and visit Lenin’s tomb, with a representation of the man himself laid out for all to see, inside his glass coffin. After trekking across miles upon miles of Russia’s unforgiving heartland, we then crossed the ocean at it’s north-eastern peak, into US territory, or Alaska to be precise. The best representation of Alaska inworld seems to be Alaska Husky City - (http://slurl. com/secondlife/Malkine/110/36/22). This area is basically a promotional shopping area for talented clothes designer “Husky GFX”, but to promote their items, they have created an enchanting little Alaskan town, complete with pine trees, snowy mountains, shacks, and even a couple of timber wolves lurking in the wilds. Having avoided being eaten by wolves, and without loosing a single toe due to frostbite, I found myself crossing into the territories of Canada, which in SL meant going to Maple Grove - (http://slurl.com/secondlife/ Solar/120/131/81), a well constructed area put together by Canada’s Postal service to promote themselves, and Canada itself, to the residents of the metaverse. before me, under the shadow of an impressive recreation of the Sky Tower, normally found in Toronto when in the real world. At this point, I was starting to feel a little homesick, so it was time for a hop across the pond, heading back to the British Isles. However, since it was on my way, it would be remiss of me not to pop into the Republic of Ireland as I pass, so I went to Dublin in SL - (http://slurl.com/secondlife/ Dublin/77/71/459), a welcome and learning point for any Irish residents, or people who want some of the luck of the Irish to rub off on them. Here, you can see me indulging in something I have done many a time in Ireland in rl... smoking outside a pub. Aaaaand finally, I am back on English soil, this time in Knightsbridge, London - (http://slurl.com/secondlife/ Knightsbridge/223/165/22), surrounded by the familiar sights of Royal Mail vans, Double Decker buses and the unmistakable buildings you only find in Londinium. Ok, I might be romanticising the place a bit, but that’s probably because in SL, you get to enjoy the beauty of London, without the stress of having to get around the place. And I guess that’s been the main point of this whole expedition... there are people in SL who go to the same two or three places day in and day out, meeting up with their own little selection of buddies, and they are really missing out. There is a whole brave new virtual world out there, and finding them is only a matter of looking. If you don’t go exploring, you are missing out. So why not grab your backpack, and if you’re lucky enough, maybe a travelling companion of your own, and go have an adventure. It’s out there waiting for you...


Textures: Unmasked

For many people the ability to create their vision in second life has a massive appeal. To bang some prims into place to create their first home, a mall or club, perhaps even something that would merit an appearance on Grand Designs. There are a few ways people create buildings in second life. Some people start with the building then texture; others look at texture ideas to kick-start their creative juices. Either way a good texture has the ability to make a mediocre building look great. Likewise, a texture can have the ability to make a good building look awful. When it comes to choosing the correct texture for your building, you have several options depending on your time, budget, and experience. Of course, there are many free textures out there. These cover a multitude of categories and can often give many people a good start into creating. Once the building bug latches on you will want to increase your texture collection and perhaps start spending money on it. When it comes to shopping for textures in SL, there are a lot of little mini hubs and outlets. I will have a look at some of the larger texture outlets and give you an idea on what they have on offer. Esprit Esprit was one of the first texture places I ever visited in SL. Esprit has been here for a while now, however while the textures are good no new ones get added to the collection. One good thing Esprit has over some of the others is the ability to buy texture packs OR single textures. All packs are the same price ($L300) or individuals are $L25 each. The choice at Esprit is limited but may provide you a good starting point to building your collection.


RB Textures A large clean fresh looking building awaits you upon arrival at RB. The collection here is bigger than Esprit and again the quality looks good. Here you can earn some money while shopping by the camping chairs on offer. You can only buy packs at RB Textures and one slightly annoying factor, I have discovered, is that they are delivered to you in a box meaning you have to unpack before excitedly putting them on your creations.

Textures Unlimited Textures Unlimited is a far bigger place to shop than the previous two; however, it can be slightly misleading as to how many textures are actually here. Unlike other places you don’t need to click to scroll though the pack contents, they are all on display for you to see. However there are also a LOT of ‘coming soon’ as well. The quality is also high and packs cost on average $L350. From the middle of the store you can use the massive tp board to navigate your way round. I do tend to find the board slightly confusing, it is split up by texture and colour so if, for example, you are trying to find red brick, it might not necessarily be where you expect.


Textures R Us (TRU) THE original texture shop in SL, TRU is simply huge and awe inspiring. Established in 2004, now with over 35 professional texture artists the TRU collection will not disappoint. The quality here cannot be faulted; all packs vary in size and cost. TRU covers a monumental category base from 3D Gothic buildings to the best in seasonal favourites. Complete with a logical and sensible teleport board in the main entrance; navigating TRU is easy. TRU are currently working on a HUD based system for people to use, now entering its final testing stages, perhaps check the group for updates. Once you have spent some time at TRU you can spot their textures used in many places and are often favoured by some of Second Life’s biggest builders. SLX Of course, users of SLX will already know that you can get a massive amount of things on the out of world website textures are also here. If you want to shop at your own pace without lag, SLX very well might be an option for you. Please remember however, quality might not always be what it seems. I have given you a small collection from some of the larger outlets to obtain textures. The final choice really does depend on your experience and own desire to learn new skills. Textures can be made using programs such as Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop. To make some truly fabulous textures on a level with the likes of TRU is not an easy task however, if you have experience of these programs you may well want to begin creating your own textures. Like building, your skills will increase with more practise and you will find yourself with complete control over the whole design process. It is important to remember that your chosen texture will complete your building, time and care should be taken when choosing what you need. Happy building & texturing!

AddiXion To Grunge by Voodoo Buwan We here at the Rez offices get quite a few press releases thrown our way, by people, groups or businesses eager to get a spotlight shone upon their achievements or activities here in SL. However, because we take our writing very seriously, and don’t want to waste our time, or that of our valued readership, we are very choosy about what we investigate, since we always take the time to go and actually check these things out for ourselves, rather than just posting the press release in the hope it might be good. Recently one particular press release landed in our inbox that both Trin and I agreed I had to at least go and check out. It was an announcement of the opening of a new sim, created and named after the sl tattoo company AddiXion. What was the reason I had to see this place? Mostly, the use of the word “grunge” in the release. Anyone who knows me, or has visited the Monema Rez Office, will tell you that I like my style a little bit dirty, grubby, torn, broken and occasionally bloody, and this place did not disappoint. The gritty urban landscape laid out before me, with one of the best arranged city areas I have seen, was a joy to behold, wondrously textured concrete buildings, each one containing some true delights for consumers who like their gear a bit grubby, since, as well as being the new home for the eponymous company, the Addixion Sim is the site of the main stores for NEO fashion addict, shooz! and AntiCute, along with having shops for such “grunge fashion” trandsetters as CatNip, Blind Spot, Miaou House, and VIRUS Co. As luck would have it, as I was looking around, the owner, Xion Hax, appeared at the stage in the central square, and I grabbed a few words with him about the place (He’s the guy with the mechanical leg, not the giant ant):


Voodoo: How did this sim come Xion Hax: Oh it is definitely my about? baby...lol. No I think there were not creative difficulties, people seem Xion Hax: Well, addiXion existed to understand the look and feel of for one year as a rented parcel in a addiXion and either they love it or different sim... so it was always in my hate it :) plans to be a full sim Voodoo: How has the feedback been Voodoo: What was the inspiration for in general? More lovers or haters? ;) the style of the sim? Personal taste, or are you catering for a market? Xion Hax: I feel lucky :) Lovers exceeded haters alot ... I think if Xion Hax: I think both lol... I started someone feels uncomfortable after making tatts a year ago... so my taste less than 2 mins he is rezzed here, he played an important role... but after flyes away... all people seem to like the concept :) I am into grunge concept anyway Voodoo: Obviously this place is only just open, but any plans in the pipeline Voodoo: Have you found many kindred for the future? sprits to help you along the way or is this more of a personal project? Xion Hax: Well, for the time being what’s top priority is to well establish Xion Hax: I have some friends that addixion as it is now... I have some we started together, building our plans for the future but I think maybe businesses, and they are contributing is better to let it settle down and see in addiXion by having their shops here, how it will go :) One step at a time. but as far as building and addiXion concept is concerned I’d say that it is Voodoo: Indeed. And can you offer any a personal project advice to any budding entrepreneurs looking to follow in your footsteps? Voodoo: So, it’s very much your baby? Has that lead to any creative Xion Hax: What’s important for me is d i f f i c u l t i e s to focus on details... Most of the good working with comments I’ve heard are about the people? reality feeling that they get walking around addiXion, so what I have to advice is first of all have fun with what u make, choose a certain concept and pay attention to details :). It will pay u off no matter how long it will take.


Last Night A Djai Saved My Life

When the real world media reports on Second Life, they would have you believe that it is populated exclusively by either Get-Rich-Quick conmen, out to rip each other off, as if they are in a complex game of guerrilla monopoly, or sex starved maniacs, leching over each other, before indulging in a frenzy of perverted rutting the likes of which would make the Marquis De Sade blush. This is of course not true, as although these stereotypes do exist, SL is also a hot bed of creative talent, from the programmers, designers and builders who make this mad world we exist in, to the creatives, artists, writers and musicians, who try to make the virtual world a more beautiful places to live in. I was fortunate enough to catch one of the best of these musicians today, Djai Skjellerup, performing one of the many gigs he puts on all over the grid, much to the enjoyment of passers by, and his dedicated following alike. Djai is a singer songwriter, singing his words as he accompanies himself on the piano, in a style which tends to make you think of Elton John at his best (I really didn’t want to draw the line between Djai and Mr John, as it feels lazy to compare just because they both sing and play piano, but Djai’s bouncy musical style does evoke a similar spirit). I was lucky enough to convince Djai to take time out from working on his debut album “Ice Age Diaries” (which should available in April) to have a chat about his career, his experience as an SL musician, and his current projects: Voodoo Buwan: So..... How long have you been performing your music in SL? Djai Skjellerup: About 7 months now. When I first heard about the possibility to play live in an online environment called SL it really caught my attention. It reinvigorated my ambition to be a songwriter. I have always written songs but having an outlet for them is key. The other methods of online marketing are far less interactive, such has having a myspace page...still very useful but in SL it is an interactive experience with those listening to you. I had not performed in RL for a few years when I heard about SL, although I’d had a variety of roles in a few different bands but knew what I really wanted to do was just to write songs and have them heard.


Voodoo Buwan: You’re one of the more established and hard working acts in SL, gigging 4 or 5 times most weeks... Did you have any problems breaking into the SL music scene? Djai Skjellerup: Yes I did at first...there were fewer musicians around then but I went about it a different way than most I guess...you see I had been in SL for around 6 months before I ever performed.. the way I see it I wanted to become an integrated member of SL before I jumped into performing. I feel dedicated to SL and I did not want to come here to try and grab some limelight for what is essentially a RL act. I intend to be in SL for the long term, but at first I did some open mics...I would advise all musicians to do those as they give a good grounding, and then I started getting a name...but I approached venues myself at first. Now I am happy to say that they come and find me :) Voodoo Buwan: Yes, your act is very much using the media rather than just playing the songs... I’m thinking about your interacting with the crowd. Is that a conscious choice, or is it more just how you are? Djai Skjellerup: Well I think SL has a habit of bringing people out of themselves and that respect I am no different...I certainly think SL makes me a more ebullient than I might be normally, but then engaging the audience is key to performing in SL I find and that engagement has become a necessity as well as an enjoyment...I love doing it..playing and chatting to folks :) Voodoo Buwan: When you say about being part of the community, it makes me think of something you mentioned on stage earlier, with the song “Get it Together”. Can you explain this project for our readers, and what it’s all about? Djai Skjellerup: Well it has become apparent recently that the SL music scene is being heavily support by a few philanthropic venue owners, who are footing the bill in many different way to bring music to the audience..in land fees, musician and staff fees and all sorts, and that is a model that cannot be sustained.And so some members of the music community in SL have been brainstorming ways of raising the profile of music in SL and educating the audience as to how it is funded...so that they understand that if they do shoulder the burden and make a contribution when at a show, then there will be alot less live music around. Now


no one really thinks a venues charging admittance will work very well, as that would exclude many noobs who we need ...new audience members are always welcome, but a much better situation would be that the costs of having the music is met by those that benefit from it...the audience...and if educated to the situation they will be more likely to tip. And so “Get It Together” is my contribution. It is a song I wrote and have distributed to a number of other SL musicians. They are currently recording it themselves and when they have returned their recordings back to us...me and my collaborator Toby Lancaster. Then we will build a “Band Aid” style track that will be gifted to all non profit venue or those with very little revenue stream, so that it can be given away free in a notecard with other information whenever anyone tips and will also act as a showcase for all the musicians who perform on it :) Here is a URL with more details :) http://slmc.myfastforum.org/Get_It_Together__about810. html Voodoo Buwan: Sounds like a great project. Have the venues reacted well to the idea? Djai Skjellerup: Yes very well...I am looking forward to hearing the other musicians contributions...we have some of the great and good of the SL music scene.... SLim Warrior, Kim Seifert and Rich Desoto among many others :) Voodoo Buwan: Getting back to you for a bit... You have a very crisp quality to your sound when performing, unlike many sl musicians, almost like you are in a recording studio rather than your bedroom, for instance. Is that something that you made the effort to achieve, or is it just a by product of having to be in a room that fits a piano? Djai Skjellerup: Well, the room I perform in at my home is my study but I am lucky that is has a high ceiling and is semi-separated from the rest of the house...so I can go for it without disturbing anyone but I building a dedicated studio...and I am hoping to use that for myself and other musicians when it is ready...my current sound is down to tweaking the setting and taking time and trouble to get it right...a few pals have helped me in that respect by being my ears at a show...getting a quick heads up if there is an audio issue is always more useful that people staying quiet because they are polite :) Voodoo Buwan: Do you have dreams of getting discovered through performing inworld, or is being an SL musician an ends in itself? Djai Skjellerup: That’s a great question...my dream was always really to get a publishing deal as a songwriter and to be able to place songs with RL artists and I saw SL as a way of getting exposure for the songs rather than me...but


the reaction I have had to my playing and singing itslef has been overwhelming and I have to admit it has made me think a little about performing in RL...but I am a family man..35 years old with 4 kids under the age of 5 lol...and so SL suits me down to the ground really...I can get my music across and engage with people in an even better way than I think I might in RL....as long as the kids are in bed lol Voodoo Buwan: Finally, a few quick fire questions: Who would say are your biggest musical influences? Djai Skjellerup: The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, REM...many melodic acts with an emphasis on lyricism Voodoo Buwan: Do you check out many live acts in SL when you aren’t performing? And if so, who is your favourite? Djai Skjellerup: I do and my personal preference is for the acts that perform original material live...a couple of the ones I like most are Melvin Took and Eyewall Paine Voodoo Buwan: And Lastly, what tips would you give to anyone else thinking about becoming an SL performer? Djai Skjellerup: Two things really...the first is to strive to be the best you can possibly be...SL is not a poor cousin to RL in respect of the quality of act you put out...make sure you are prepared with everything you need at hand... there is nothing worse than dead air during a show or someone forgetting lyrics ...some minor mistakes are fine and in fact a little glitch often helps to remind the audience it is being performed live...but really just be the best you can through preparation and practice.. and the other thing is to integrate in SL a little first. Trin & Voo Discuss: IP Theft disproportionate to the actual threat it represents Trinity Dechou: Well I have seen some of the biggest celebrities in SecondLife’s posters with slogans such as “content thieves steal the clothes off our backs” and “I’d rather go bare than wear stolen hair”. I think everyone agrees content theft is a HUGE issue in SecondLife, however is it an issue that Linden Lab can control? Can they actually do very much and if so at what cost to an already fairly unstable grid?

Welcome to the new section at Rez Magazine. This will be called Trin & Voo Discuss where we will discuss current topics to amalgamate our views and opinions into one article regarding key SecondLife issues. For our first edition will we discuss the recent major push by content creators Voodoo Buwan: Exactly. the answer so really is it fair to haul Linden Lab over the coals? Linden lab already state the DMCA on their website but are very reluctant to get into copyright infringement issues. Voodoo Buwan: And understandably so. If you really want to steal content, it would be incredibly difficult to stop it. To take textures for example, running a successful art gallery on the side myself, I still know that anyone who really wanted to steal one of my pics simply needs to use the print screen function on their pc, and they can easily do this. The only real way that Linden Labs should get involved would really be to deal with any copyright infringers I find, and ban them appropriately. It’s unreasonable to expect them to try to figure out a way to stop it happening in the first place. Trinity Dechou: Yes but then surely that becomes a slippery slope. Say for example, we both have galleries in SecondLife, and you steal my work. I have to prove you actually stole my work and then of course you are allowed to counter claim this. It all adds into a great mix of slippery slopes. I feel for the designers and content creators stuck in the midst of this, but as you have said, surely educating the consumer is the best way forward. If I want to purchase a Nicky Ree for

instance, I can admire the quality and go to her instead of someone else doing a similar design for a fraction of the price, having said that however, how many people are actually this honest? Voodoo Buwan: This is very true. The only problem then becomes, how do you expect the less sl-savvy consumers to know the difference between the real thing, and a cheap knock off? Trinity Dechou: Well, I think that’s a major issue. Also a very hard one to prove, however so is initial copyright infringement. None of us want to see the end of content creation in SecondLife, we have heard of a few designers ending their business because of the hassle it’s brought them, I think that’s a sad state for SecondLife to get into. However I also (ironically) feel for Linden Lab, who are stuck in the midst of a massive battle regarding the issue. There is no easy way through this and I feel Linden lab will never be ‘right’. They can never been seen to do the right thing as far as many people are concerned.


Voodoo Buwan: The whole thing reminds me of the situation eBay has found themselves in over the years. In the beginning, back in the early days of the net, eBay was very much a community thing, built on trust and a mutual benefit of one man unhauling his trash onto someone else who thought it treasure. However, as time went on, and obviously the site grew in popularity towards being the juggernaut it is today, fraudsters and thieves flocked to abuse the system. And while eBay has set a few things in place, apart from banning the offenders reported (who usually return under another name) they have not got personally involved. And yet, despite this risk involved in the system, it has still thrived. Trinity Dechou: Very much so, it’s an issue, as we have said faced by virtually ALL multinational corporate companies, and while we accept content theft is wrong, I believe we both agree there isn’t a lot Linden can actually do. As you said with regards to eBay, offenders return under another name, so more and more alts are created with more and more theft. Voodoo Buwan: Indeed, although this is by no means a get out excuse for Linden Labs to just say “This is just all your problem. Fight it out amongst yourselves”. I think one of the things with this issue is that it can’t be solved even by us banging our heads together. But I think the point is that simply ranting that the Lindens should wave a magic

wand and make theft impossible is unrealistic and unfair.
