Christian Formation by Katherine S. McLean, Associate Rector

So many God moments occurred on our Lenten pilgrimage to England that it is difficult to pinpoint the highlights. One of the many surprises that greeted us was in Canterbury Cathedral. The community there was also using “The Five Marks of Love” curriculum as part of its Lenten study! Worship and daily prayer has been occurring in that sacred space for over 1400 years. Our prayers mingled with those of countless pilgrims before us and still to come, reinforcing the deep connectedness and communion of Love we all share in Jesus Christ through the power of the Spirit. Although each of us was moved by different experiences and in different ways, our holy imaginations were all captured by a massive cast aluminum sculpture in Ely Cathedral. This monumental work of art by Jonathan Clarke called “The Way of Life” encapsulated much of both this particular journey and our larger faith journeys. The sculpture reflects the irregularity and unpredictability of our lives and of our spiritual development. Visibly articulating the theme of pilgrimage in part through its placement near the cathedral entrance, the work traces the journey to the cross that was the inspiration for the sculpture. Not only does the texture of the piece change, but the color does as well, moving from darkness at the bottom and lightening as the top is approached. If you look carefully, you can see that the top is both in the shape of a cross and of the number “1,” signifying the one God and the victory of life over death through Jesus Christ. Below that is the number “2,” which speaks of the two natures of Jesus, the Second Person of the Trinity, as both fully human and fully divine. Further down, the number “3” represents the Trinity of God which expresses the “Three-in-One” relational flow of God’s Love, experienced most fully in community. The sculpture itself is emblematic of the unexpected twists and turns of our walk with God. It was not initially presented for consideration as a design. Rather, it began as a “doodle” on the back of the artist’s portfolio which the commissioning group happened to see. Attempts were made to embellish and alter the original doodle, but in the end it was realized that the beauty of the sculpture lies in its very simplicity. As with the sculpture, so, too, with our relationships with God and each other. This glorious 50-day Easter season as we search for ways to practice resurrection in our own lives, perhaps we might consider what gets in the way of simply loving God and each other…and simplify!

Children’s Ministry

Godly Play

When we resumed Godly Play classes on April 23, our series of stories for the time between Easter and Pentecost is called Knowing Jesus in a New Way. After Jesus had risen on Easter, he appeared among his followers in different ways until the time of his Ascension. Soon after Jesus’ ascension, the Holy Spirit came to us on Pentecost (June 4). This is a new story that the children have not heard before and we look forward to sharing it with them in the circle. Our last Godly Play class is Sunday, June 4, 2017. We will have community classes throughout the summer where parent volunteers serve as Sunday School teachers.

Fellowship for Moms

We are putting together a Mom’s Bible Study for fellowship, teaching, prayer and support. Trinity Perpetual Memorial and Endowment Fund Update

The Trinity Perpetual Memorial and Endowment Fund (TPMEF) offers a wonderful way to remember a loved one or to honor someone who has known God’s love and has returned that love in service through this church. In recent months we have added the following memorial enrollments: William “Wilkins”Kearney Gordon Edward Clay, Jr. Jane W. McCall Darwin Charles Fenner Catherine M. Yeomans Elizabeth Diggs Edmundson Chester Theodore Alpaugh, Jr. If Trinity is important to your own faith journey, consider creating a Living Endowment for yourself. It is a powerful way to establish your own legacy of faith. A Living or Memorial Endowment may be established for as little as $100 and additional donations can be added any time. Annual distributions from this endowment primarily support the preservation of Trinity’s physical plant and secondly, clergy expenses. We will celebrate the lives of all of the “saints” who have been newly enrolled in 2016 with the publication of our annual report on Trinity Sunday, June 11.
