Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The scripture says “honor the Lord with the first fruits then your plate will be filled with plenty.” I have learned that God in God’s generous mercy is always ready to build me up to pour out love and to surround me with goodness. The problem is I don’t always get it. I don’t get it because I withhold. These first fruits the scripture is talking about for me is usually about money. I would like to think I don’t need or care about or ever wish for money--but I do. When I get it right and put my money with the Lord first, then my plate is filled. The church teaches us that we return to God a tenth of all that we have. It really doesn’t matter if we made it, inherited it, found it, the government paid it to us -- the first fruits are to be returned to God as a thanksgiving for all the other 90%! I have found as I part with that one thing that I hold dear -- my money -- soon after that I was willing to part with other things, things that prevent me from being who God created me to be - like selfishness, stubbornness, refusing to listen to another point of view. Really all of the things that call me away from the love that God has for me. On Sunday, November 6 we will celebrate All Saints Day. We will remember all those who have gone before us to make the world a better place and who have worked to make Trinity Church the church God would have it be. We will also baptize new people into the life of Christ. I want to ask each of you to follow the teachings of your church and return 10% of your income to the work of God through Trinity Church. Doris and I will be pledging 10% of what you pay me to be interim rector and we ask you to join us in this venture of joy and celebration. We will place our pledge cards in the large alms basin as we come to the altar for communion and the pledge cards will all be blessed -- blessed so that we may be more strong and true to be the people God has created us to be. We ask the Lord to take what we give now and transform us to be the people who have joined the Generosity Movement, so that we may know the truth that generosity changes every thing.

Stewardship

Raina O’Neil, Director of Development and Communications

By now you’ve probably noticed that our Stewardship ministry is a little different this year! We’ve had wonderful volunteer speakers from our congregation speak of their faith and their love of Trinity Church. The Rev. Ed Bacon enlightened and inspired us with his sermons and workshops. Our Interim Rector has shared stories of faith, abundance and joyful giving. While our Parish-wide Celebration of God’s Abundance Dinner has yet to happen as of our Tidings print deadline, it promises to be a memorable and joyous evening. Please note several important things: 1. 2017 Pledge Cards are being mailed the end of October. 2. Please return 2017 pledge cards on Commitment Sunday – November 6. There will be a special blessing at each service to honor the commitment you are making with God through Trinity Church. 3. Our church budget cycle is changing to January 1 – December 31. 4. The 2017 Church Budget is dependent on your pledge. It is especially important that we receive all pledge cards by the end of November because our budget for 2017 will be based on those commitments. Our finance committee will present a budget to the Vestry in December and the Vestry will adopt the 2017 budget at their January meeting. Prayer for Joyful Generosity God of abundant grace, you demonstrated extravagant generosity when you freely gave your son, Jesus Christ, to set us free. Free us now from obstacles both external and internal that we may grow in our love for you and in our desire to return from our abundance. Make us passionate, enthusiastic, and joyous givers who make a difference in the world for the sake of Christ. May we and those who witness our love for you – by word and action – be transformed as, in your Name, we transform the world. Working Towards a Tithe A tithe is 10% of your income. At its General Convention since 1982, and every convention since then, the Episcopal Church has affirmed the tithe is the minimum standard for giving and encourages its members to tithe or be working toward a tithe. A tithe may sound like an unattainable goal to begin with, but if you start with a certain proportion of your income and increase the percentage each year, you will be tithing in a short time. You could start with 5%, a half tithe. Another option is 2½%, which is equivalent to pledging the first hour’s pay of a 40-hour work week. The “Giving Percentage” chart below may help.

Happy 10th Anniversary to Trinity Treasures!

Can you believe that we officially started Trinity’s book and gift shop on October 1, 2006? Who would have believed that we’d be where we are today when, during the summer of that year, Dee McElroy came running across Trinity’s front circle parking lot to ask me to help her implement her idea of a book and gift shop at Trinity? And what fun this has been! As you may remember, we spent a year “establishing” ourselves by setting up our wares in the foyer of Bishop Polk Hall every Sunday. (We’re glad these days are over.) While Dee and her husband, Jim, have moved back to Atlanta, her ideas and work have been carried forward with the invaluable help of our committed, loyal volunteers and the support of you, Trinity Church members and friends. It is hard to believe, but Trinity Treasures has contributed over $110,000 to WOTC for the funding of church ministries and community programs. This is not bad considering that we have only 300 square feet of retail space. We’ve also placed numerous orders – at cost – for the needs of Trinity confirmands, pilgrimages, and Trinity gifts to staff, clergy, and retiring vestry members, thereby over the years saving Trinity Church thousands of dollars. To celebrate our 10th anniversary, Trinity Treasures will have an extra-special sale in Bishop Polk Hall foyer from November 10-13. Look for some fabulous buys to help launch your Christmas shopping! Thank you to every one of you who has helped the Trinity Treasures ministry become such a success. With sincere appreciation and gratitude, Linda Stone 6

Eucharistic Visiting

What is in those little black kits some parishioners receive at the altar rail after communion and what do they do with them? The people who receive the kits have undergone training for administering communion under special circumstances. They are licensed by the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana as Eucharistic Visitors to bring consecrated bread and wine to those who cannot be at our services due to illness or infirmity. Each kit contains a small ciborium with bread and a small cruet with wine. The kit also holds a paten from which to serve the bread and a chalice from which to serve the wine, along with appropriate linens. The corporal sets the sacred space upon which the elements are placed for the home communion service and the purificator is used to wipe the chalice after each person receives before it is passed to the next person. There is a leaflet in the kit from which the service is led. Each visitor has pre-arranged their visit after our service in a timely manner. Their ministry is one of presence, healing and hope. They are good listeners and will pray with and for those they visit. The consecrated bread and wine they bring are tangible reminders of God’s love and presence being with those who cannot be with us at our services. To arrange for a Eucharistic Visitor, please contact: Deacon Alyce at 909-1326 or ajefferson@trinitynola.com. A Continuing Education session for Eucharistic Visitors is planned on Sunday, December 4 in the Board Room right after our 10:30 am service. 7
