MSc DANCE SCIENCE Validated by City University London
/ What is it? This research-focused, 13-month immersive programme allows you to study dance science within a world-renowned conservatoire. It focuses on applying research to dance practice across various settings; recreational, training, and professional. What is special about it? You will learn within a culture of high calibre conservatoire dancers, with over 300 students committed to becoming professional dancers and choreographers. Cross-disciplinary opportunities between MA and MSc students are also integral to the learning experience. The programme includes an applied module, allowing you to translate your knowledge and skills from earlier modules to the observation of one dancer across six weeks, culminating in a proposal for a research-informed performance enhancement strategy for that dancer. Our in-house Screening Programme gives you a great opportunity to be involved in live data collection and gain valuable experience of working as a dance scientist while you study. Our links to professional companies and organisations mean that you can participate in larger research projects and network for future opportunities. Our specialist facilities including a versatile testing laboratory with a dedicated team of support staff. Who is it for? This programme is for anyone with a dance background who is interested in dance science, such as dancers, choreographers, scientists, academics, teachers, lecturers and health practitioners.
What can I do next? Some graduates go on to become consultants for dance companies, training institutions and national dance organisations. Some become teachers and lecturers, and others go onto further study. Some graduates do not become specialists but use their dance science knowledge to inform their practice as dancers, teachers, rehearsal directors or choreographers. It gives you a solid grounding in core elements of dance practice plus a tailored programme of study around your own needs and interests. What is special about it? This is the only contemporary dance programme of its kind anywhere in the world, offering the opportunity for intensive study within a conservatoire setting. The programme is highly flexible: we will sit down with you at the start of your studies and plan a timetable and programme of activity to suit you. You will benefit from a high level of taught, studio-based contact time with expert tutors.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE PATHWAY Validated by City University London

This creative research-focused programme allows the experienced individual to develop and promote their artistic voice in a supportive conservatoire environment and tailor their experience towards their interests and career intentions. What is special about it? Delivered in conjunction with Siobhan Davies Dance and Independent Dance, you will develop your artistic practice within an expert environment of intellectual and creative inquiry.

We support mid-career artists to reflect upon their body of professional experience and its role in their ongoing learning, to engage in intensive studio-based learning experiences with significant artists and a skilled peer group, to deepen their own practice as performers/makers, develop their understanding of a range of research methodologies within the arts, and to pursue their own area of artistic interest. Two core modules - Embodied Practice and Investigative Practice - are run as intensive five-week blocks in the spring and summer terms, delivered at Siobhan Davies Studios by Independent Dance.
