ABOUT TRANSITIONS DANCE COMPANY
ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE
Founded in 1982, Transitions is the original student training dance company based at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. The company was created to help young artists bridge formal training and their entry into the professional world. Formed each year through an intense and competitive international selection process and under David Waring’s artistic direction, these young dancers represent some of the most talented performers and makers in the world today.
Transitions will perform a mixed bill of new, innovative dance work specially commissioned from choreographers Jarkko Partanen, Hagit Yakira and Richard Chappell. The variety of these three choreographers’ repertory ensures that the 2018 tour will delight both seasoned dance audiences and those new to contemporary dance with its diverse and high quality programme.
‘Total professionalism and high production values. A joy to watch.’ Isabel Echarren, Programmer, CNC, Madrid
In 2017, Transitions performed innovative repertory in 15 shows, touring to theatres across the UK and Europe. Transitions’ extensive repertoire, acquired from over 35 years of working, encompasses a mix of established, interesting dance makers alongside exciting and sometimes provocative newcomers. It is well known for its daring choreographic commissions, in many cases identifying superbly talented emerging choreographers at the early stages of their careers, including such alumni as Lea Anderson and Luca Silvestrini, as well as established artists such as Rafael Bonachela, Crystal Pite, Azsure Barton, Ben Wright (bgroup) and Lost Dog. Dancers leaving the company have gone on to work with established companies such as Sir Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, Akram Khan Company, Alias Compagnie, Siobhan Davies Dance Company, DV8 Physical Theatre, Rambert Dance Company, Company Wayne McGregor, Maresa von Stockert’s Tilted Productions, Fabulous Beast, Punchdrunk, Candoco, Protein, and Michael Clark Company. Transitions alumni also go on to form their own companies and work in various cultural settings across the world.
EDUCATION
MARKETING
Transitions performances are supported by a high-end education package that offers an excellent opportunity to interact with the Company. It provides an involved and enriching experience by offering access to world-leading conservatoire practice and an insight into the creative process behind each piece. Education work is a key audience development tool, as we anticipate that workshop participants will become audience members.
Our marketing team provides venues with tailored support services for all press, marketing and communications activities. You will be supplied with a comprehensive marketing and press pack including all information and templates you need to conduct successful campaigns. The Company also brings its own front of house display stand (85cmx200cm), creating an impressive and vibrant presentation in your venue. Our team will be contactable from booking until the performance for professional support and advice to ensure we maximise audiences together.
The Company and Artistic Director can deliver workshops, masterclasses, post-show talks and residencies. The dancers receive rigorous training at Trinity Laban to deliver engaging, quality education work, and we are very interested in talking to venues about ways to develop new ideas and projects in partnership. We also offer ‘curtain raisers,’ which are a fantastic opportunity for groups to work with Transitions dancers to create a short dance piece, which is then performed by the participants at the start of the show. Curtain raisers are a valuable audience development tool as they increase audience numbers through family and friends attending performances. Transitions works with participants from Key Stage 3 upwards.
‘The dancing technically and physically was very strong, as was the uniqueness, performance quality, and artistry of all the dancers. The company and its director were very approachable, warm and were happy to share their experience and expertise.’ Lee Lappin: Creative Director of Performing Arts/ SSCD/ The Space Dundee

CHOREOGRAPHERS FOR 2018 Jarkko Partanen
Richard Chappell
Jarkko Partanen is a Helsinki-based choreographer and performer. In 2012 he graduated from the MA Choreography programme at the Theatre Academy of Helsinki. Prior to this he studied at Trinity Laban and at the Inter-University Centre for Dance Berlin. Partanen’s works have been shown at numerous festivals internationally and his collaboration DIG MY JOCKEY was selected for the Aerowaves top 20 list in 2014. Partanen is a founding member of W A U H A U S collective and his work intertwines tightly-involved group work, eroticising playfulness and strong audiovisual concepts. There is an extraordinary sense of something ‘brewing’ in his pieces, and it is difficult to pigeon-hole him as he responds to all of his collaborators and collaborations in very different ways. He is a chameleon indeed – expect the unexpected.
Richard Chappell’s research into choreography started whilst training at Tring Park School for Performing Arts and Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance. In 2014, he formed Richard Chappell Dance, which has undertaken three UK Tours and created three independent films. Richard has created works for Stuttgart Ballet, English National Ballet, BalletWorks, Chichester University and the National Youth Ballet and he is a Discovery Artist at Pavilion Dance South West. By combining his focus on the individual with his full-bodied and evolving movement, Richard strives to take audiences and performers on a journey of unique environments and physical challenge. His work demands skilled technicality, interpretation and musicality. As an emerging choreographic talent he is creating a very sensitive dance language fusing many of his own varied physical practices, such as ballet, capoeira and contemporary dance styles. Poetry and literature have significant influence on his work.
Hagit Yakira Hagit Yakira is an award-winning Israeli choreographer whose company has toured the UK, Europe, Scandinavia and Israel. She is well-known for her warm, poetic, highly physical and compassionate approach to choreography and teaching, which has led to a continuously increasing, passionate, dedicated and diverse following. She has created eight works for her company amongst many other commissioned works for other companies and students. Hagit is constantly in demand to deliver workshops for professional dancers and the community around the UK, Europe, Scandinavia and Israel. Her well-crafted and considered work is deeply human and theatrical, often comic, and always connected to a human ‘story’. These stories present characters, ask the performers to support and partner each other and allow the audience to be guided through emotional and personal journeys.
