In an Easter message from our ELCA Presiding Bishop, Mark Hanson he wrote: “So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. – Matthew 28:8. Magdalene and Mary walked to Jesus’ grave, expecting to find death. It’s understandable. Images of violence filled their minds. Thoughts of their vulnerability and mortality deadened their spirits. Death had become the defining story of their lives. Instead of death, the women met a resurrection messenger who said: He is not here; for He has been raised, as He said. As they hurried to tell others, the risen Jesus met them. They were changed. Now resurrection, not death, would define their lives. Jesus lives! Now resurrection, not death, defines our lives. Jesus continues to meet you in resurrection messengers.” What is the defining story of our lives? Recently we welcomed home our Mission Team from Nashville, TN. During the course of four weeks they took a house that was uninhabitable and they
were able to transform it so that its owner, Jessie St. James could move back into it as her home. Out of the ravages of flood waters comes something new. For Jessie, we are resurrection messengers. Changed lives are our defining story. A couple of week ago, I attended a reunion dinner of graduates from our Financial Peace University efforts. We listened to testimonies of lives that once were enslaved to debt without much hope of recovery. Lives have been changed. Their old habits have given way to a new way of being debt free. Worries have been changed to joy. They have adopted a lifestyle of stewardship following God’s plan. With renewed hope we have been resurrection messengers. Changed lives are our defining story. Recently I had the opportunity to accompany eight men from our congregation who traveled over to Trinity Lutheran Church in Saginaw. Once a thriving gathering place for worship, Trinity has closed its doors due in part to a very violent and declining neighborhood. Soon the building, the shell will fall to the wrecking ball. We went to extract some wood pews from the building to fashion them anew into Faith Chests to be given to newly Baptized children. As we were moving the pews, I encountered an elderly woman picking up sticks from a nearby vacant lot. I suspect she is one of the last to live in a neighborhood, that has
3
drastically changed. One needs only to look around the neighborhood to see images of violence and death. She inquired as to what we were doing. She was so happy to hear that something good was going to come from the shell of the old building. A smile came over her face as she blessed our efforts, her smile communicated a glimmer of hope. In that moment we were resurrection messengers. Even a slight momentary encounter can give so much. Changed lives are our defining story. The resurrection defines our story, we are in fact resurrection messengers. And as the women on that first Easter morn hurried from the tomb to tell others, so we hurry to tell the good news as resurrection messengers. I encourage you to take the opportunities that are afforded you to be resurrection messengers. Look for opportunities, brief encounters like: praying and blessing our 16 young women and men who are affirming their Baptism in the Rite of Confirmation this month. Volunteer at the Mobile Food Pantry that we will be hosting on May 19th. Make a commitment to join us on Wednesday’s beginning in May for a continuation of our Emmaus walk, Fun, Fitness, Fellowship. Let the resurrection define our life and our story. Living in the joy of Easter,

For the love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. 15And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them. 16From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. 17So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! 2nd Cor 5: 14-17
As I sit to write this article, the choir anthems of Easter are yet ringing in my ears. The shouts of “alleluia” and “He is Risen” still echo in my head. On Easter morning, as worship began, I was sitting up front on the Memorial garden side, and I could hear the waterfall in the garden. Then as the bell choir began their anthem, quietly, almost hauntingly, I closed my eyes and imagined what it would have been like that first Easter morning. The hushed stillness, the feeling of loss, the world no longer making much sense..and then…suddenly, all this is shattered by the angelic earthquake and the message of Jesus arisen! I believe, in a nutshell, this is the message of Easter. That nothing is the same anymore. Jesus resurrection has truly shaken up our world and God has come to make all things new. In this transformative event, our world and we along with it are changed forever. We have died to the old and been raised as new creaContinued on page 5

tures of God, remade in the cross of Jesus Christ. But what if we don’t feel like everything is new? How do we maintain that sense of Easter joy, now that all the Easter trimmings are being taken down? I think one way is to look for the good in our world; to look for the best in people. It’s fairly easy to see the negative or to point out people’s faults. What would happen if we constantly lifted up what is good in our world and each other’s best attributes all the while giving glory to God? What if we could see through the lenses that God sees us, those Jesus glasses, and view our whole world like that? Now I am not talking about some Pollyanna point of view. Certainly our world has its share of sorrow and pain and evil and being in touch with that can help us to be empathetic towards those in need. But rather I am saying that in light of the victory that has been won for us through Jesus, we are called to view everyone with the divine point of view. The vision that we can have when we put on these lenses is no less than earth shaking, no less than a radical embrace of the transformation that God has wrought in the raising of Jesus. We too can realize a daily dying and rising to new life when we can change our focus from an earthly one to an eternal one. A wise man once said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. Which sounds like the change has to start with us; within our hearts and lives. God has given us that freedom and power to do that through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. May this spring be for you a time of renewal and rebirth and may God’s vision become your vision. Serving with you,

just wondering...
Just wondering about faith and the Saguaro (sa’ warou) cactus. One of the beautiful things about this part of Arizona is the Saguaro cactus. It stands alone, is tall and stately, is slow growing (an inch a year) with its “arms” going out in different directions. Those “arms” take about 75 years to develop. The cactus itself may live up to 200 years and can reach an average height of 30 feet with 5 “arms.” The root system is complex with a long tap root and many auxiliary roots that branch out in all directions wrapping themselves around stones about a foot beneath the surface to Each year when give the cactus stability in the desert wind. Moisture is stored in we come out the cactus and used as needed for here, I am survival. Its nocturnal flowers fascinated by (pollinated mainly by bats) bloom these plants of from April thru May. Ok, enough of the botany lesson – natural beauty… Wikipedia is wonderful! plants that are Each year when we come out here, I rare and thus am fascinated by these plants of protected by law. natural beauty…plants that are rare and thus protected by law. Our family here has a giant Saguaro in its front yard. It is approximately 25 feet tall, has 8 “arms,” is 96 inches in circumference and is home to a number of different birds. It is a beautiful creation of nature and the only one on their property.. Now ponder faith. Faith is usually slow growing and takes a lifetime to grow its root system. These roots wrap themselves around the rocks of truth that nourish and sustain it. These rocks of God’s truth are: the promise to be with us always; the hope that believes even though sight is blurred; and, the assurance that grace is sufficient for every need. These roots help the faith-filled person remain strong in the face of life’s destructive winds. Jesus said faith begins as a small thing – like a mustard seed but grows into a large bush (or might I say, a cactus) and is a place where birds can build their nests. But to grow, faith must store and then use the nutrients for spiritual survival – worship, prayer, song, fellowship, sacraments – and let them grow the “arms” that become the visible signs of life. These “arms” are the legacy of faith evident in children, grandchildren and others touched by our faith. Attached as branches to Jesus, the true Vine, we are his arms for the world. Just wondering if you’ve ever thought of yourself as being like a Saguaro cactus?! Pastor Kirk Havel, Ret., 2119 Middle Haven Dr., Gladwin, MI 4862

First United Methodist Church
The Open Door is asking local churches to assist us in the matter of finding work for those in our long-term transitional Restoration Ministry. Because they cannot find jobs, many of these Christian men and women are unable to leave the Restoration Ministry even though they have met all the goals set for them. The financial crisis in Michigan has made it very hard to find jobs. Without a job they cannot move into an apartment or buy a car, they cannot be self-sufficient and move on with their lives. These men and women are available for day labor jobs, such as mowing, lawn clean-up, garage cleaning, furniture moving, window washing, housecleaning, gardening, small engine repair, bicycle repair, maintenance and painting. If you are interested in helping these men and women call the Open Door office Monday through Friday between 9-1 pm and leave a message at 835-2291. Ken Hicks is the Head Resident Adviser at the Open Door. He will contact you and pass your job opportunities on to those anxiously looking and hoping for work. It is up to the individual employer and the laborer to negotiate a fair day’s work for a fair day’s wage.
Is inviting you to “Life after Loss” a five week grief recovery support group. Thursday Evenings: 6:30 to 8:00 PM in the Parlor Beginning April 28, 2011 Dealing with the death of a loved one can be among life’s most difficult and stressful experiences. While everyone grieves differently, all experience a range of emotions that are important in healing. Because these emotions are sometimes frightening, embarrassing, or are not always accepted by others, many choose to grieve privately and alone. Yet, research shows that those who give time and honest expression to their grief in community with others who care, listen, and understand, often are able to move through the grief in ways that bring greater healing and wholeness. If you are one, or know of someone who has experienced a significant loss in the last year and a half, why not consider being a part of this five-week group. It will be cofacilitated by Rev. Dr. Lisa McIlvenna who is a Licensed Professional Counselor(LPC) and Connie Eaton who has a Masters in Counseling and Guidance Training and additional Social Work training through MSU. The group will meet weekly on Thursday evenings form 6:30 - 8:00 pm from April 28 through May 26. RSVP by calling Pastor Lisa McIlvenna at 989-835-6797 or by e m a i l i n g l i s a m cilvenna@yahoo.com.
