“THANKS TO KNEE RESURFACING AT SOUTH COUNTY HOSPITAL,

I’M BACK IN THE RACE.”

Tony Medeiros was a marathoner – until a knee injury sidelined him. He had to quit running, gained fifty pounds, and experienced increasing pain when he walked. “An orthopedic surgeon told me I needed a total knee replacement and I told him, ‘No, I don’t.’” Tony was right. Dr. Robert Marchand of South County Orthopedics performed partial knee replacement surgery using the surgeon-controlled robotic arm MAKOplasty™ system. “Two days later, I’m home walking around, not even a crutch,” Tony remembers. And just three months after the surgery, he was running 5Ks again, winning 15 of the 17 races he competed in that year. “Dr. Marchand gave me my life back,” Tony says. MAKOplasty Knee Resurfacing offers a minimally invasive treatment option for early and mid-stage osteoarthritis of the knee. And no one has more MAKOplasty experience than the surgeons at South County Hospital Orthopedics Center.

onstage AT TRINITY REP

Doubling Down on Dickens: A Christmas Carol and Oliver! by Molly Greene While 37 years of A Christmas Carol at Trinity Rep seems like a long and wellestablished holiday tradition for many Rhode Islanders, it pales in comparison to Dickens’ original novel, which was published 170 years ago this winter. The reasons for the enduring timelessness of Dickens’ story (as well as Adrian Hall and Richard Cumming’s adaptation for Trinity Rep) are the incredibly trenchant themes found throughout Dickens’ work: the importance of family and friends and the responsibility we all have toward the poor and destitute; divisions of class and stark inequalities of wealth; the universal need for love and charity. These themes, which Dickens visited again and again, are as relevant and captivating today as they were over a century and a half ago. In his childhood, Charles Dickens (18121870) experienced first-hand the effects of poverty and suffering. His education was interrupted at the age of 12, when his father was sent to prison for debt. His entire family was imprisoned at Marshalsea in London, and Charles was sent to work in a boot-blacking factory, alone and miserable, living and working in atrocious conditions. However, after three years Dickens returned to school, and from there he became a clerk in a law office. In 1828 he started working as a freelance journalist — a job which eventually developed into a illustrious career as a wellknown journalist, novelist, and playwright. Dickens achieved fame with novels such as David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist and Great Expectations, which

packed a universal humanist message while railing against social injustices, especially child labor and the mistreatment of the poor. A master storyteller, Dickens also created characters so enduring they remain cultural symbols even today: Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim, Oliver and the Artful Dodger, to name a few. Due to his success, Dickens traveled broadly and established himself as a philanthropist, embodying the compassion for the suffering that was the main theme of his works. The story of A Christmas Carol is wellknown: miserly Scrooge changes his ways after being shown the beauty and richness of humanity by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. However, Dickens wasn’t interested in just telling a festive holiday story — he wanted to provoke a change in his readers as profound as Scrooge’s transformation. This same zeal for social justice can also be found in Dickens’ Oliver Twist, famously adapted into the musical Oliver!, which opens at Trinity Rep this February, with direction and choreography by Richard and Sharon Jenkins. It tells the story of a poor orphan boy, Oliver, who escapes a workhouse and runs away to London, where he joins a band of pick-pockets. Through the story of this one orphan boy, Dickens exposed a world of societal ills, from the awful conditions of most workhouses to the growing number of homeless children living on the streets of 19th century London. Dickens also buoyed his stories with flashes of humor, hard-earned sentiment and the beauty of mankind’s potential for

growth and change, best exemplified by Scrooge’s transformation at the end of A Christmas Carol. In his excitement over discovering himself alive on Christmas Day, Scrooge experiences a second childhood, a great personal joy and newfound enthusiasm for the holiday, but his excitement extends beyond the personal — by changing himself, he changes the future of his family, friends and all those around him. By taking responsibility for those he loves, and for those less-fortunate, he brings wealth and happiness to his community. One could say that Dickens’ story emphasizes that it is not money, power, or class that defines a person as good or bad but rather humility, charity, and love — the values illustrated in A Christmas Carol as the “holiday spirit” that makes a difference for individuals and their communities.

Did You Know…

When A Christmas Carol was published in 1843, Christmas was just coming into vogue as a popular holiday. At the beginning of the 19th century, Christmas was considered a smaller, quieter holiday than the noisy, busy one we’re familiar with today. However, its popularity was beginning to grow: in 1833, the first popular book of carols was published, and the first ever Christmas card was designed in 1843, the same year A Christmas Carol came out. In 1848, the Illustrated London News famously published a drawing of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert with their children around a Christmas tree (a somewhat new tradition which originated in Germany, Prince Albert’s native country). So while Dickens did not single-handedly bring about the popularization of Christmas as we know it, he certainly caught the holiday on an upswing and contributed to the growing hype!

LOOKING BACK/looking forward

Dickens Makes Us Want to Sing! Trinity Rep’s 2005–2006 season was another occasion when Trinity Rep turned to Charles Dickens twice. Not only did we produce our annual holiday classic but also kicked off the season with another rollicking musical, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, based on an unfinished novel by Dickens. from left: stephen thorne, brian mceleney & timothy crowe. directed by amanda dehnert, Set by Eugene lee, costumes by william lane & lighting by brian lilienthal.

A Tasty Gift

For seven years, there’s been a unique ending to A Christmas Carol. After the curtain call, there’s one more moment that has become a tradition: the actor playing Scrooge steps forward and asks the audience to donate to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. This tradition began in 2006, when artistic director Curt Columbus arrived in Providence. Having volunteered at a food bank in Chicago, Curt wanted to get involved here, in his new home, as well. While touring the Rhode Island Food Bank, his now-husband Nate Watson suggested tying food bank collections to A Christmas Carol. Audiences come back year after year to see this story of humanity and generosity, so why not provide an opportunity to live Scrooge’s lesson of compassion and charity? Last season, A Christmas Carol audiences gave over $44,000 dollars to the Food Bank, and over the past seven years they’ve raised nearly $260,000. During Columbus’ time as artistic director, this tradition has been an important link between Trinity Rep and its home state because, as Curt explains, “a strong Rhode Island community is the basis for a strong Trinity Rep.” This reciprocal relationship not only helps Rhode Islanders in need, but reminds audiences to bring the spirit of A Christmas Carol into their lives and to the rest of Rhode Island. —Molly Greene ABOVE: JAY BRAGAN, JANICE DUCLOS & BRIAN McELENEY IN A CHRISTMAS CAROL (2002)

Anton Chekhov Meets Christopher Durang at Trinity Rep

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang and directed by Curt Columbus runs November 21 – December 22 in Trinity Rep’s Dowling Theater.

by Lexi Diamond A camel named Misty speaks comforting words to the Virgin Mary. A jack-in-thebox nanny pops out of gift wrapping. A man and a woman furiously smash potato chips with their fists in an effort to appear busy in front of the postman. Strange? Surely. But moments such as these are standard fare for playwright Christopher Durang, who has found great success by creating some of the wackiest stories on the stage today. His often absurd, always outrageous comedies have been produced nationwide in regional and Broadway houses to great critical acclaim. While Durang’s prominent place in the American theater was already assured, he was finally recognized with a Tony Award this past spring for his play, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, which opens this November at Trinity Rep. Durang was born in 1949 in New Jersey, where he was raised by a family who supported his playwriting from the age of eight, but to whom he also attributes his tendency to write about dark, dysfunctional familial woes. After studying English at Harvard University, he received his MFA in playwriting from Yale School of Drama. He made his New York playwriting debut in 1976 with his one act, Titanic, but his first major success came in 1981 with a production of his perhaps most controversial work, Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You. His other notable works include Beyond Therapy (1981), Baby with the Bathwater (1985), and The Marriage of Bette and Boo (1985). He currently runs the Juilliard playwrights program in New York City. Durang’s plays are known for their darkly comic style and tendency toward absurdism. Durang uses a wacky, farcical approach to write about heavier topics, such as psychological breakdowns, family crises, and the critique of social and religious institutions. For the most part, his characters are unhinged and even a bit cartoonish, but also grounded in a humanity that makes them relatable and often quite sweet. In his play, Beyond Therapy, one of his characters seems to speak directly for the playwright himself when he declares, “If you take psychological suffering in the right frame of mind, you can find the humor in it.” Durang’s most recent play, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, is something of a

Trinity_ACC.13.indd 15

mash-up of his usual wacky, farcical material with the work of a theatrical titan, Anton Chekhov. While the Russian playwright rose to success in the 19th century, he remains one of the most celebrated playwrights of all time. His plays and one-acts are some of the most influential dramatic texts ever written, and their continued impact on theater today cannot be understated. His best-known and most frequently produced pieces include The Seagull (1896), Uncle Vanya (1896), The Three Sisters (1901), and The Cherry Orchard (1904). Chekhov’s plays, which share themes of longing, regret, family, and memory, often feature characters struggling toward escape from the bonds of the past as well as family obligations. Despite these serious and often melancholic themes, Chekhov continually insisted his works are actually comedies. It seems appropriate, then, that Durang, whose plays share much of the very dark humor and thematic matter found in Chekhov’s seminal works, should have such great success with a play that riffs on the work of the Russian playwright. Durang makes sure to include many direct references and winks to particular Chekhov plays that will please those well acquainted with Chekhov’s canon of work—the title, itself, being no exception — though audiences that are less familiar with Chekhov’s plays will undoubtedly be equally entertained. After all, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike focuses just as strongly on the state of popular culture in the US today: Durang includes shout-outs to Lindsay Lohan, Snow White’s seven dwarves, and HBO’s “Entourage.” The play tells the story of a brother and sister who have been living together (read: bickering incessantly) in their family’s Pennsylvania home, when their third sibling — a movie star with her much younger boyfriend in tow — returns to stir up trouble. The three siblings, each named for a famous Chekhov character by their theater-loving parents, are forced to reckon with their individual unhappiness, their shared strangeness, and a prophesy portended by a soothsaying housekeeper named Cassandra. The clever, goofy, moving play is undoubtedly some of Christopher Durang’s most spectacular work: a play that’s perfectly Chekhovian, completely Durang, and altogether a great deal of fun.

LOOKING BACK

Returning to Masters of Comedy In 50 seasons, Chekhov and Durang have been regularly produced at Trinity Rep, sometimes repeatedly as in the case of Chekhov (Uncle Vanya, 1964; The Three Sisters, 1967; The Seagull, 1992; and The Cherry Orchard, 1988 and 2006), or shortly after his New York premieres, as in the case of Durang (Beyond Therapy, 1984; The Marriage of Bette and Boo, 1986; and Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You and The Actor’s Nightmare, 1991). l to r: timothy crowe margo skinner & brian mceleney in The seagull, directed by richard jenkins, Production design by Eugene lee, costumes by william lane & photo by mark morelli.

Shouldn’t all Rhode Islanders have access to the arts? The arts are more than just an important part of our state’s economy. For young people, the arts are a path to success. The arts contribute to achievement in school, particularly among disadvantaged students. For cities and towns, the arts promote civic engagement and encourage neighborhood and downtown revitalization. They make our communities more liveable. With all that’s good about the arts , shouldn’ t all Rhode Islanders be able to enjoy and participate in what our state has to offer?

That’s where we come in. Rhode Island’s investment in the arts is small (just 7/100 ths of 1% of our state’s budget). With that, we managed to reach over 1.2 million Rhode Islanders and visitors last year, including over 189,000 young people. Let’s ensure that all Rhode Islanders can benefit from the arts in the Ocean State.

About Trinity Rep Tony Award-winning Trinity Repertory Company — recently named the State Theater of Rhode Island — under the leadership of The Richard L. Bready Artistic Director Curt Columbus and Executive Director Michael Gennaro, is thrilled to be celebrating their 50th Anniversary season. From its humble roots in 1963 in the Trinity United Methodist Church, Trinity Repertory Company has undergone an incredible transformation in 50 years, becoming one of the most respected regional theaters in the country Featuring the last permanent resident acting company in America, Trinity Rep presents a balance of world premiere, contemporary, and classic works for an estimated annual audience of approximately 145,000. In its 50-year history, the theater has produced 62 world premieres which have gone on to have productions at other theaters throughout the country. Local, national and international recognition has consistently come to Trinity Rep. In 1968, it was the first American theater company invited to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland and in 1981 it received the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theater Company. Arts education at all levels is central to Trinity Rep’s mission. This season marks the 47th year of Project Discovery, Trinity Rep’s pioneering educational outreach program. Last season, Trinity Rep’s educational programs reached over 16,000 Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut students through matinees as well as in-school residencies and workshops. The Young Actors Studio allows thousands of students participate in after-school enrichment activities at the theater as well as

in drama therapy programs designed for children on the autism spectrum. Brown University/Trinity Rep offers professional training for actors and directors in a three year MFA program which combines in-depth classroom curriculum with hands-on experience with a working professional theater. Lifelong learning thrives in talkbacks after every performance, theater arts classes for adults and public forums. In 1973, Trinity Repertory Company moved to its present home in the Lederer Theater Center at 201 Washington Street, downtown Providence. Formerly known as the Majestic Theatre, the historic building houses two performance spaces: the 500 -plus seat Chace Theater and the 300-seat Dowling Theater, as well as offices, production shops, and rehearsal halls. The theater is wheelchair accessible and offers an Assistive Listening System for the hearing-impaired. The Pell Chafee Performance Center, located at 87 Empire Street, is home to Brown/Trinity Rep’s MFA program and Trinity Rep’s educational activities for grades K–12, with classrooms and a flexible theater space. As Rhode Island’s largest arts organization, Trinity Rep has a significant impact on the community, and is a linchpin of Providence’s arts and entertainment district. The theater employs over 100 artistic and administrative staff and annually generates nearly $12 million in economic activity. Curt Columbus became artistic director in January 2006, following Amanda Dehnert, Oskar Eustis, Richard Jenkins, Anne Bogart and Adrian Hall. For more information, please visit www.trinityrep.com.

YOUNG ACTORS Studio

Shaping the Future Trinity Rep’s K–12 Education Programs by Jordan Butterfield

T

en years ago, a tiny red-headed second grader named Kellie Rock walked into Tyler Dobrowsky’s Young Actors Studio class. She never left. Well, she left to sleep at home and probably ate at some point… but other than that, Kellie has pretty much stayed here at Trinity Rep. Kellie is one of the many students whose parents signed them up for one of our Young Actors Studio classes and fell in love with theater. Over the past decade, Kellie has played countless characters, helped to write dozens of plays, sung many songs, recited what amounts to a complete folio of Shakespearean text and now, as she prepares to graduate from high school, she finds her resume longer than some professional actors. In college, she’ll be far ahead of her peers in terms of training and experience, thanks to time spent at Trinity Rep.

Young Actors Studio offers programs for kids of all ages, from kindergarten through high school. We provide programs for students of all levels of experience, with more advanced classes offered alongside beginner programs designed to gently introduce students to the craft of acting. This way, students never take the same class twice, and are continually being challenged, learning new skills. Students sign up for many reasons: some don’t have a drama program at their school, while others want to supplement what their school already offers. Some are drawn to the teaching artists on our staff, including resident acting company members, and a few look to pick up audition tips before college. All of our students want to become better actors in a fun, supportive and safe environment where they can make friends with shared interests. In the process, students not only become better actors, but more confident and empathetic people, better public speakers and collaborators, more creative thinkers, and keen observers of human behavior. If you are looking for an outlet for your child, please consider signing them up for the Young Actors Studio. We have sessions in the winter and spring for students in grades K–12, plus specialty classes like Musical Theater Dance and Playreading Aloud. For more information, visit www.trinityrep.com/education/ or email at jbutterfield@trinityrep.com. Many students fall in love with theater here, and even more find friendships that last. You will probably see Kellie. Just look for the redhead in all the classes.

lifelong learning

Acting Out!

2013-2014 SEASON

Lifelong Learning at Trinity Rep Hey, you. Sitting in the audience. Have you ever dreamt of acting yourself? Have you ever thought, “I couldn’t possibly do that”? Well it turns out… you can. And you can do it right here at the theater. Trinity Rep offers acting classes for adults in a variety of areas and are perfect for acting novices, seasoned performers and everyone in between. Acting allows us to take risks, become self-aware, be better listeners as well as better communicators (plus, laughs are pretty much guaranteed). If you want to take a class with Scrooge himself, Fred Sullivan, Jr. offers Shakespeare and Advanced Acting classes in the spring. For those who adore Angela Brazil’s performances, take the Exploring Character class and learn how she does it. Joe Wilson Jr. teaches Audition Techniques, which is great coaching for job interviews in any field. If you want to improve your public speaking skills, take Improv Scenework: Level Two with Katie Leeman. Trinity Rep also offers instructional theater workshops for area businesses looking to tap into the creative energy of their employees. Workshops can focus on public speaking, body language, collaboration and working as a team, but they also provide a fun, entertaining opportunity for co-workers to interact. Finally, for the acting-phobic, we have a class called Beyond the Stage led by teaching artist Linda Sutherland. The theme of this season is Fearless Smartgirls: Veronica Meadows and Girl Power! This intergenerational class is for anyone hoping to learn more about theater through workshops and discussions. Veronica Meadows star Angela Brazil will be a guest speaker in this series of conversations which allow participants to learn the process of the playwright, Stephen Thorne. They will also explore versions of dynamic girl heroines in modern fiction, drama and film. Enjoy coffee and bagels each morning, along with great conversation with Trinity Rep actors and staff! Trinity Rep in the Big Apple!

O

n October 7, Barry & Lizanne Rosenstein (parents of Jaime Rosenstein, Brown/Trinity Rep MFA ’13) hosted Trinity Rep at their beautiful apartment overlooking Central Park in New York City. More than 40 guests were treated to special performances by Miriam Silverman (Brown/Trinity Rep MFA ’05), Benjamin Steinfeld (Brown/Trinity Rep MFA ’05) and Emily Young (Brown/ Trinity Rep MFA ’07), all of which were under the direction of Aubrey Snowden (Brown/Trinity Rep MFA ’13). They performed pieces reminiscent of their time at Trinity Rep, including “Where Has the Music Gone?” from Charles Strouse’s You Never Know, the balcony scene from Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, and “I Know Things Now” from Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods. Following the performance, Richard L. Bready Artistic Director Curt Columbus spoke to the alumni about their experiences in the Brown/Trinity MFA program and how it helped to shape their future as they pursued careers in the entertainment industry. The alumni agreed that Trinity Rep, with its tradition of resident artists, provides powerful artistic assets and creates a firm foundation of real-world experience. Together, Brown University and Trinity Repertory Company have produced a model of theater training that is without intellectual or creative limitations . Trinit y Rep trustee and Theater for Every Generation Campaign Chair Suzanne Magaziner then spoke about the importance of supporting this campaign during Trinity Rep’s 50th anniversary season so that we could continue to graduate talented alumni who would go on to make an impact in the world of professional American theater. Host Barry Rosenstein with Suzanne Magaziner; Dennison Young (Brown/ Trinity Rep MFA parent ‘07), Emily Young and Marty Granoff; Trinity Rep staffers Kate Kataja and Kathy Calnan with Perry Granoff; resident acting company member and Head of Brown/Trinity Rep MFA acting program Brian McEleney with Brown/Trinity Rep MFA alumni Susannah Flood ’07, Joe Donovan ’08 and Ben Steinfeld ’05; Aubrey Snowden, Vicki Reiss (Executive Director, The Shubert Foundation), Nate Watson, Curt Columbus and Suzanne Magaziner
