BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care *

The programme has the following general educational and specific aims:

1. To provide learners with an opportunity to study for an award explicitly focused towards future employability and career progression;

2. Develop student knowledge, critical understanding, intellectual and practical skills relating to established principles and practice in health and social care;

3. Prepare students for the workplace by developing their transferable skills and providing opportunities for work-experience;

4. Enable students to become independent and confident learners with a range of appropriate health and care based, academic and transferable skills which may facilitate lifelong learning;

5. Develop ability to apply detailed knowledge and systematic understanding of the subject and service delivery needs in order to contribute to the enhancement, monitoring and analysis of the sector; 6. Develop students’ intellectual skills to bachelor’s degree level, including critical evaluation, analysis, problem-solving and reflection;

7. Prepare students for the workplace by building their transferable skills relating to, inter alia, communication, decision-making, research, interpretation, critical evaluation and their ability to turn theory into practice, including initiating and carrying out projects;

8. Enhance students’ employability by preparing and entering them for a career or career development in the health and social care field by developing professional skills and providing the opportunity to apply them in vocationally relevant contexts;

9. Prepare students for research or further study beyond level 6 in the field of health and social care;

Modules:

Year 1:

� Children, Young People and Families � Complementary Therapies � Introduction to Physiology � Introduction to Research � Principles of Health and Social Care Practice � Workplace Practice: Health and Social Care

Year 2:

� Community Care and Development* � Continuing Professional Development � Health Portfolio Dissertation* � Health, Wellbeing and Sustainable Development � Living with Care: The Older Person � Mental Disorders and Psychopathology � Research Project*

Assessments:

There are a variety of assessments such as presentations, projects, reports and blogs.

Due to the focus on employability, graduates from the BSc in Health and Social Care will be able to pursue careers in the widest possible range of Health and Social Care areas.

Exit Points & Awards:

Learners who successfully complete any module will achieve the HE credit at that level and will normally receive a Statement of Achievement once a year together with a transcript of results after each Examination Board.

Entry Criteria

Successful completion of Level 4 Cert HE Skills for the Workplace Programme in Health and Social Care (120 credits).

* Denotes optional module pathways; students either select a 40 credit dissertation or the two 20 credit modules highlighted.
