Our History The University of Dublin Choral Society is believed to be the oldest Choral Society among the universities of Great Britain and Ireland. It is certainly the oldest one in this country as a whole, having been founded in 1837. Its membership was limited at first to eighteen and its objective was “The cultivation of Choral Music in General. The society still maintains this objective today although membership has grown to over 130. Read more at www.udcs.org
Michaelmas Term Concert November 2019 Public Theatre Trinity College Dublin Mendelssohn Die erste Walpurgisnacht A Choral favourite in past decades and a rare example of a substantial choral work with a secular, non-religious text. It sets a poem by Goethe, which tells of the Druids in the Harz mountains attempting to celebrate May Day, which brings them into conflict with the Christians. This most dramatic and exciting of works brings to life the vivid imagery of the poem.
Hilary Term Concert March 2020 Rutter Magnificat Bach Magnificat The Hilary term concert presents two very different settings of the Magnificat, the most set religious text after the Mass. The intricate counterpoint and vocal virtuosity of Bach’s sublime setting contrast with the colourful orchestrations, catchy rhythms and deliciously singable lines of John Rutter’s work
Other activities Choral regularly engages in a variety of different activities and social events, such as our table quiz and annual Christmas carol events. Each February, we host the Richard Cherry Cup, which is a singing competition for vocal quartets formed from within the choir. This always proves to be an entertaining and rewarding experience
Scores Scores may be rented at the first rehearsal. You then keep your score until the last concert has concluded. We ask for a â‚Ź10 deposit, which will be returned when (and if!) you leave Choral. If you prefer to purchase your own scores, please consult the Librarian, as editions may vary.
