the launch of lawsoc’s inaugural nighttime tour of dublin
Auditor’s welcome Freshers, welcome to college but most importantly welcome to Law Soc. You have arrived at Trinity but your journey has just begun! This year, it’s our 85th Birthday and we want to make it our best year yet! With world renowned guest speakers, the best black tie balls on campus, acclaimed competitions and diverse career events, at Law Soc we have you covered. We take our members on trips near and far and have expanded our Charities section this year to include a committee of our members to make a real difference. This week we want to introduce you to our society, and whether you’re after well-made points or fun nights out, LawSoc has the event for you! As we all know, college is about reflection and self-discovery, and what better way to start that voyage than by coming along to our Comedy Debate on Tuesday afternoon and asking yourself if there is more to life than being really really ridiculously good looking (the whole committee is praying there is anyway!) Why not drop in to our guest speaker of the week on Wednesday before joining us later that evening in DTwo (rumour has it that their speakers are pretty good as well!) for a night you won’t forget! If you’re still alive and kicking by Friday, then meet us at the Pav to finish off the week with our nighttime tour of Dublin, which may or may not include a complimentary guided tour of the best “culchie” pubs in Dublin! Our goal is to make your time at college one to remember. We are aiming to be Trinity’s best society, be a part of it! You will have the best four years - Make the most of them!
Be tomorrow’s leading lawyer To be the best, you need to train with the best. Our Trainee Solicitor Programme offers excellent training in the practical application of the law. We invest in your on-going development as a lawyer, helping you to reach your full potential.

EVENTS
Law Soc is headed back to the west yet again for our annual Galway trip. On the 5th and 6th of October we’ll be indulging in two decadent nights of questionable decisions and one or two too many renditions of Galway girl. This Law Soc staple is not one to be missed.
Undoubtedly the coolest event in Trinity, those lucky enough to secure a ticket are whisked off to a secluded countryside castle for a night of masked debauchery. Your venetian guise not only looks the part but prevents your academic colleagues from identifying you at your loosest ebb. Dark corridors, a banquet room full of strobe lights and the very likelihood you’ll miss the return bus all await you on this infamous evening. Tickets are like gold dust so don’t wait around.
You guessed it. One of our most coveted events makes a comeback. An event that’s far classier than you unwashed masses deserve but this year with a twist. To kick off ball season we want to transport you to one of Dublin’s sleekest venues, thrown back to a decadent era where stylish, dark gangs held sway. Set to impress - this is one not to be missed.
Scarcely needing an introduction, the annual Maples Law Ball is the jewel in our sparkling social crown. A black tie banquet in a top secret location with a three course meal, live music and of course the teddies we all endeavour (few do) to bring home await you in this Hilary term event. It has all the glitz and glam of Trinity Ball, but with photos you might actually want to show your insta fans the next day.
LawSoc has a proud tradition of bringing its members to some of the Continent’s most exciting and exotic places (not to mention that time Law Ball was in Offaly) and this year is no different! For two unforgettable nights this spring, LawSoc will bring you to yet another mystery European location and give you the chance to indulge in as much Culture, Architecture and Cuisine as you can handle – and they’re just the names of the nightclubs!

compet c o m m e r c i a l n e g o t i at i o n s There’s 12 minutes left. The clock is ticking and things aren’t looking good. You’ve got to negotiate a multi-million euro deal for your client who is trying to sell his startup to a bluechip company, while still holding onto a 20% stake. You vividly remember the nugget of wisdom from The Art of the Deal by Donald Trump: “The worst thing you can possibly do in a deal is seem desperate to make it.” You braggadociously slam your briefcase on the table and say “we’re willing to walk away from this”. Welcome to commercial negotiations: LawSoc’s hard-nosed, cutthroat bargaining competition. This competition pits teams head-to-head in a mock boardroom to negotiate the best deal for their client. Coming second semester.
junior mock trial Fancy yourself the next Harvey Specter? Been described as dogged, argumentative or devastatingly charismatic in your time? Then participating in the Junior Mock Trial is for you! Find your best mate (or someone who actually studies the reading list) and begin your journey in a team of two. Your task is to compete against another pair in a simulation of a criminal trial. Cross-examine witnesses, deliver opening statements and craft compelling arguments to make it past the group stages, where you will have two knock-out rounds to make it to the grand final. Each round will be judged by a barrister or a trainee, and expect a star-studded lineup for the final stages (including a generous cash prize!)
t i t i o nS E NsI O R m o c k t r i a l Stressed about careers? Need to let off a little steam in a controlled environment? Then put your hat in the ring for the Senior Mock Trial. Open to 3rd and 4th Years, this is a great way to bolster the CV and gain valuable advocacy experience for the future. We can guarantee juicy, intricate cases, experienced judges and worthy opposition (as well as refreshments and pizza for the final!!) Don’t miss it!
MAIDENS Calling all Fresh students. Have you ever dreamed of a delightful debate? Relished rebutting a rival with rhetoric? Flattening a fiend with fustian? Or just obnoxiously over-using alliteration? LawSoc Maidens is the first chance for Freshers to try their hand at college debating, and believe us, it’s a chilled introduction to the dog-eat-dog debating world. We’ll be running workshops to help you get to grips with the basics of argumentation, and in the second semester we’ll let you loose to take on other Freshers.
MOOT COURT The DU Law Society’s moot court competition returns this year and looks set to be an entirely riveting experience for all participants. The competition will be open exclusively to DU Law Soc members and studying law is not a prerequisite. A moot court competition imitates a court hearing (usually an appeal against a final decision) in which teams of two represent the sides of the appellant and respondent and attempt to satisfy the court of their argument’s superiority.
CHARITY PA Charity events form a huge part of the Law Soc social calendar. Having reached a target of €10,000 for the Capuchin Day Centre for the Homeless last year, we have packed the calendar with fun and clever ways of raising money for this years’ chosen charity, Jigsaw, the National Youth Centre for Mental Health, that includes sports events, night time social events, and interactive workshops throughout the year!
LAW DAY
Law Day is our annual charity day, which forms the pinnacle of Law Soc’s fundraising calendar. Taking place in February, Law Soc takes over town to fundraise for our chosen charity. The day is filled with social events, from a 5-a-side football tournament, Take Me Out, Pie the Lecturers, Gumball Rally, along with a themed Club Event to celebrate the day! Last year’s Law Day was a huge success, and we will be looking to make this year’s even bigger, with even more volunteers and a charity sub-committee (see below to get involved)!
LAWSOC 5K COLOUR RUN
In the first term, we will be launching our inaugural Charities Sponsored Colour Run, taking place in the Phoenix Park! Entrants can run, walk, or jog, and there will be prizes for the winner, along with freebies and spot prizes for all who take part! This event will be a fun and feel good way to make new friends and raise money in the meantime, so dust off your trainers, come down and get active!
ARTNERSHIP charities social event For what is set to be one of the most glitzy social events in Trinity this year, we will be taking you across the world for a night themed from Tokyo, in one of the biggest, most exciting club venues Dublin has to offer! All in the name of good charity, come and experience a night filled with music, colour and light in the brand new Opium IRO venue with Law Soc! With LED lighting, manga-themed screens, and smash hits from some of Ireland’s talented DJs, the scene is set for a memorable night!

As one can see, Law Soc Charity Events play a huge part in the society calendar, and require a lot of extra help.
Over the last few years, we have rece ived enormous support, and achieved amazing goals thanks to our volunteers, sponsors and sub-committees. This year, we want to make it even bigger and better, and so we need YOUR help! We will be recruiting a Charities Sub-Committee for 2018-19, and applications will open in September, so keep an eye on your Facebook page to get involved! We look forward to hearing from you all!

ERASMUS
Erasmus is a daunting experience. This year we want to lessen any fears our members may have about studying abroad. our International Relations Officer for the 85th Session is Morgan Clarke. As the man in charge of all of our international dealings, Morgan has a network of contacts for the specific locations that students choose to study in. In October, a careers events will be held for working opportunities abroad. Another one will be held later in the year once people know if and where they are going on Erasmus. Morgan is available for general information requests year round.
CAREERS
Worried about what to do with your coveted four year degree at Trinity? Well our Careers Convenor Clodagh Prior has got you covered. Clodagh will be organising careers events and seminars that cover everything from trainee contracts and internships to the New York bar and non-law career paths. The jewel of the careers year is our Careers Week in Hilary term; jam-packed with careers fairs, talks and networking opportunities. No matter what year you are in, avail of the opportunities to network with employers and find out more about what paths your future may hold.

The Committee Auditor kate fahy treasurer aoife curtin
Kate is our spiritual leader for the year ahead, undoubtedly the most qualified person in college to advise on Instagram likes – sorry, LawSoc - autocorrect smh...Once ranked as Tyrone’s second greatest export after Peter Canavan, Kate is hoping that her year as Auditor might finally be the event that changes her Dad’s mind on that issue! What is undisputed though is Kate’s love for LawSoc and her passion for staunchly defending the plot holes in The Notebook – who doesn’t check their post for a full year Kate??! During business hours you can find Kate in her office, aka the second seat on the right on Ussher 2, or failing that you can usually come across her working overtime in Sophie’s! Either way, Kate’s love of boomerangs has increased LawSoc membership in Australia by circa 31% since she joined the committee! A veteran from her time as Social Secretary last year, Kate has risen through the ranks and has firmly established herself as Law Soc royalty. Kate as a royal though, pretty sure something like that would never work....
Doing her best attempt to hail from Dublin, Aoife Curtin brings the experience and aggression as Treasurer in her second year on committee. Aoife gave up a promising career on stage in her native Limerick to focus on her love of both law and politics. Aoife has just the experience needed for the year ahead, spending the majority of her time treasuring those closest to her. When not engaging in public displays of affection, Aoife is known for her foul language and falling over on stage at school assemblies.
secretary eimear devaney social secretary caoilfhionn macnamara
Having learned the ropes (and 2.7m English Land cases) last year, Eimear will undoubtedly bring huge energy to her role as Secretary, partly because of her enthusiasm for LawSoc but mainly due to her addiction to Monster! Word on the street (and it must be the same street Eimear lives on because she’ll know exactly who said it) is that in organising the speaker series this year, Eimear hasn’t slept in 356 hours and has once again broken her own record for the world’s most detailed mind map! With a keen interest in politics from a young age, her EYP roots are said to be stronger than those of the Oregon Maple trees on campus and rumour has it that her first manifesto point was a promise that every last pothole will be filled in Front Square before the year is out (you can take the girl out of Athlone….) Maybe then Eimear might finally make it to the last act at T Ball but, either way, she is usually in the thick of the action and is determined that every single LawSoc event will pack a punch!!
Known equally as well for her fondness of a Monday spent in Dicey’s as much as kicking back and relaxing at the top of the Dean Hotel, Caoilfhionn has seen Dublin City at its best and its worse, and yet she always seems to make it look like she had a good time for her Insta followers. As social sec this year, you can expect Caoilfhionn to bring high quality photographers, corporate sponsored MUAs and free tanning sessions with every Law Ball ticket, but expect her to bring it at an affordable price!
Our very own book fanatic, Abby Dempsey will be taking the reigns as Librarian this year. Abby is perhaps the most qualified of all committee members having spent the summer scribing a series of fantasy novels. Having the next Tolkien manning our (metaphorical) library isn’t all Abby offers though, as she is our first married committee member in sixteen years having wed in a lovely ceremony this past July. See if you can spot her cameo on the violin in Ed Sheeran’s “Galway Girl” music video (2:04 mark)
Having spent the summer in the US enhancing her skillz, PRO Amber can now spot fake news quicker than the bar closed in Carton House last year! Our resident History and Political Science student had initially toyed with the idea of studying in Galway, but everyone at LawSoc is delighted that Amber triggered Article 50 of the CAO and left the Wesht for the capital in search of new trade deals and a decent WiFi connection! It has proven to be a blessing in disguise that Amber decided against studying law considering she always seemed to be “mistaken” when calculating the “damages” done on previous LawSoc trips to Galway while she was an employee of our hostel (proof that not all heroes wear capes!) Being originally from Scotland, Amber is used to challenges, which is just as well as she’ll have the responsibility for editing the photos of the lads on committee for the year ahead! Our insta careers are in your hands Amber!!
Call him the next big name on campus, Trinity’s Troy Bolton, or “that boy in 2nd year law and business who needs a haircut”, call him anything but ordinary – he’s our Competitions Convenor, Peter Benson! Having stolen eyes, hearts, and imaginations across campus with his advocacy skills (and impressions), Peter’s rise to fame was sudden, as was his willingness to tackle the society game! With big plans ahead for competitions this year, expect the discourse to heat, and his ego to explode!

4TH YEAR REP niall devitt
Niall Devitt is the quintessential South Dublin lad. The former Clongowes man has spent his first three years “networking” and attempting to break into the DUFC seconds however this year he will be both repping the Fourth Years and organising the international trip. Unfortunately his summer house in Monaco is off the cards but you can bet he’ll be choosing anywhere you can spin a size five Gilly. Niall spends his days wearing his class ring and cultivating his “social influencer” persona.
3RD YEAR REP nicola ó corrbuí
Law Soc’s third year rep and resident vegan, Nicola Ó Corr-yeah-buí is the brains behind this year’s Law Society Galway trip. Is she a well-travelled young woman with a passion for adventure, or does she just need an all-expenses-paid excuse to visit her friends in the bog? Who knows?! One thing we’re certain of, however, is that with her enthusiasm for deadlines and quinoa, the society will be safe in her hands while on tour.
2ND YEAR REP alex loughrey
Dublin Barista School’s highest net-worth customer, Alex ‘Lock-O Deece’ Loughrey is the Law Soc’s 2nd year rep this year and is certainly one to watch. Known for his impeccable Grafton barnet and auditor-schmoozing skills, Alex is on a mission to go straight to the top. You can catch him permanently perched in the law library pit, but don’t be fooled; this man is out to make our first week fresher than his Daniel Wellington watch collection. “Coconut flat-white there, and make it snappy”.
CAREERS clodagh prior CHARITIES rob o’Donohoe
Final Year Law Student, Trinity’s Next Top Model, Arts Block Lobbyist, travel blogger, innovator, and renowned sesh queen - Not many have travelled as diverse paths as this glittery social butterfly! It is for that very reason that Clodagh makes such a good careers convenor! Clodagh backs that glitter up with gold when it comes to knowing the options available to Law students, and has searched far and wide to uncover a wide range of alternative career paths for law students! One will see a classy and diverse edge to careers events this year, and this will be the woman to thank!
Wowing audiences last Spring with his flawless impressions at the Law Cabaret, it became clear that prominent drag-queen Rob O’Donohoe would be a vital member of this year’s committee. Having revolutionised the Dublin music scene with his Distortion club night and the development of what many are calling “Robwave”, O’Donohoe J Jr. has offered his services to LawSoc. Despite already giving back so much in the form of his remix to Aggro Santos’ Candy (which peaked at #14 on the Irish charts), Rob will look to up his game this year in the role of Charities Convenor.
COMP A gavin dowd
FM104’s most coveted ginger, Gavin Dowd is the man with a plan to make Law Soc Debates as salty as his Sunday night listeners. This year’s Competition’s Convenor A is often seen marching around campus with a leather briefcase. Some say it contains priceless expertise on the skills of rhetoric and oration, others say it’s full of ham sandwiches. Gav is the king of time-management and organisation, but will the hectic Law Soc debating schedule be too much for him? We Dowd it.
Ireland’s next top Taoiseach, Emma Young, is the Law Soc’s Competitions Convenor (Queen) B of 2018/19. Hailing from beautiful Bandon, this young Corkonian is well on her way to making the Mock Trial competition as dramatic and intense as every south-Dublin law student’s eye makeup. Her background in European Youth Parliament is sure to stand to her this year as she navigates the murky waters of society politics and notion-fuelled first years.
COMP B emma young
When asked what the words he lives by are, IRO Morgan Clarke simply responded with the fire emoji! Known to be extremely humble, the self-proclaimed “most handsome man in law” is refusing to put his LawSoc credentials on his CV, citing “a severe lack of space.” Our bro Morgan spent last year in the “US of Awesome”, where the only thing as golden as his semesters was his suspiciously even November tan! He’s undoubtedly the best equipped person to handle all things Erasmus (did you know he went on a road trip that wasn’t a taxi home at 10pm?!), but has Morgan changed from his year across the Atlantic you ask? Not a chance! He still tells every dude and dudette he meets that he hails from the “Irish Riviera” (Aoife just calls it “Clare”). Despite threatening a boycott of the UT after they ignored his incessant requests for a spot in the Trinity 20, Morgan is also a keen journalist but has assured Kate that his new column called “Wearing a Wire” is 100% fashion related. Who knew Indiana was such a stylish place?
assistant pro áoife mccolgan
No stranger to a novelty t-shirt, a regular attendant at gaming conventions, a fan of strongly caffeinated drinks and collector of mint condition action figurines… Yes you guessed it, Aoife is the jock of TCD Law Soc! Magic with the camera, nifty on photoshop, and a consistent record-breaker at Fortnite, Aoife’s favourite catchphrase jumps between ‘Computer Says No’ and ‘Have you tried turning it off and back on again?’ Aoife can solve pretty much any of your problems, except those that are law-related!
