from the organizers

here is something beautiful about our neighborhood, and the extended Binghamton community as a whole. It’s not just the old Victorian houses on tree lined streets. It’s not just the relationships we’ve developed with our neighbors. It’s the hopefulness that we all see in Binghamton.

T

us. The idea is not new- we owe a debt of gratitude to the residents of Ithaca, who have been hosting the original Porchfest for the last decade (check out Ithaca Porchfest on September 18th!). Similar festivals now exist in over 50 cities across the country, with each one showcasing the unique talents of their local music scenes.

We are survivors. We weathered the storm, and look what we have to show for it. It is no secret that the second half of the 20th Century was less than kind to our fair city. Our once booming industrial town fell on dark days. The factories closed. The storefronts were boarded up. People left in droves. Economic depression hit the Parlor City hard. And yet, over the last decade or so, there has been a glimmer of hope. Call it revitalization. Call it reinvention. Call it a fiercely proud community that has refused to let time forget it.

It’s a simple concept. Get together every single local musician we can find, and put them on an assortment of neighborhood porches to tell stories and share their craft… for free! Easy peasy! No vendors. No tickets. No cash to exchange. Just musicians and porches and all of you lovely people walking around to soak it all in.

We are no longer a cigar city. We are no longer a shoe city. What we are is a city finding new life through the efforts of a tireless creative class of musicians, artists, chefs, thinkers, doers, movers, and shakers.

It is our gift to the community, and it is our pleasure to present it for a second year in a row. Porchfest is for you, and what it develops into is completely up to you. Make it your own. Get the family together. Jump on your bicycle and cruise around to our 26 different stages. Hook your kids up with a lemonade stand. This is the time for traditions to be made. What a sweet song we’re singing. Enjoy it!

Binghamton Porchfest is here to celebrate that creative class, to showcase the plethora of amazing musicians that walk amongst 6 binghamtonporchfest.com

frequenty asked questions

What if it rains? Ugh. It’s not going to rain. It’s definitely not going to rain, and shame on you for even mentioning that word. But since you asked: we’ll be keeping a close eye on the weather report in the days leading up to Binghamton Porchfest. In the completely nonexistent event of a bunch of rain, our rain date is Sunday, September 4th, and we’ll post an updated schedule on the website. But it’s not going to rain. Don’t even say that word.

I’m coming from out of town. Where do I park? Binghamton’s West Side offers ample free street parking, so this shouldn’t be an issue, but if you can’t find a place to park, we suggest the lots at Recreation Park, accessible from Laurel Ave. and Beethoven Ave.

Where do I pee! There will be port-a-potties scattered throughout the festival route, and real live facilities are available at Cavanaugh’s Grocery (69 Leroy St.), The Beef (62 Leroy St.), Abel’s Pub (65 Rotary Ave.), The Belmar (95 Main St.), The Bundy Museum (127 Main St.), Cyber Café West (176 Main St.) and Recreation Park (Beethoven St.).

Can I walk to all the porches? That depends on you! To get from one corner of the participating neighborhood to the 8 binghamtonporchfest.com

other, you’re looking at about .6 miles, total. That’s pretty walkable, but plan accordingly. If you’re in a wheelchair, please keep in mind that while the West Side neighborhood is mostly flat, there are a few small hills to conquer. For what it’s worth, we think the best way to experience Binghamton Porchfest is on a bicycle or unicycle.

Where the heck did you come up with this idea? We didn’t! Ithaca, NY hosted the first Porchfest celebration in 2007, and since then the phenomena has spread to over 50 cities nationwide. Each Porchfest operates independently, and each city puts its own unique twist on the idea.

yards) is at the discretion of each hosting homeowner. Have fun, but remember that there’s kids around and you’ve got to work on Monday!

Will there be food? Hosting homeowners are welcome to invite licensed food vendors with the appropriate NYS permits to set up in their driveways (make sure you are set up completely on private property). Check binghamtonporchfest.com for updates. Also consider grabbing a bit from one of our various neighborhood establishments.

What should I bring?

Is this a family friendly event?

Well, that’s up to you, but we recommend sunscreen, a chair, a bicycle, a camera, a cooler, a blanket, and a little bit of wanderlust.

It’s fun for the whole family! Bring your kids, dogs, and in-laws!

So it’s completely free?

Will there be alcohol? No alcohol will be served at Binghamton Porchfest, however if you’re looking to grab a quick brew, we recommend The Belmar Pub (95 Main St.), The Beef (62 Leroy St.), Abel’s Pub (65 Rotary Ave.), and Cyber Café West (176 Main St.). If you’re planning on bringing a cooler, please keep in mind that alcohol consumption/open containers are always illegal on sidewalks and city streets. Consumption on private property (porches/

Sure is! Everybody involved in Binghamton Porchfest is volunteering their time. With that in mind, performers may opt to put out a tip jar or a merch case for their performance. Please consider tipping or buying a CD, and do your part to support local music! If you’re interested in donating to the cause to make 2017 even bigger, we’d be tickled pink! Edgy Sketch When Thom and Beth met, 26 years ago, making music wasn’t part of their lives. They were happily raising their son when, in the mid- 1990s, a friend was selling an acoustic guitar and Thom took to playing again. Thom had been making music in a couple bands and with friends in the 70’s, but an injury to his left hand took him away from playing for 15 years. Since returning to playing, he has been in several different local electric rock bands and his now happily making acoustic music with his wife Beth. Seven years ago, Beth started taking African drumming lessons. She had been in choir starting in elementary school and continued through high school with the Vestal Voices. Beth greatly enjoyed the African drum lessons but her long term intent was to make music with Thom. And now those dreams have come true, with the acoustic duo Edgy Sketch. With Thom on guitar and Beth on djembe, they play an eclectic mix of classic acoustic tunes. (5-6pm, 34 Davis St) facebook.com/edgysketchmusic 2nd Annual Binghamton Porchfest 17

and Emma has the cello, Which completes this group of fine fellows. (1-2pm, 129 Main St)
