PRESIDENTIAL HOMETOWN
LYNDON B. JOHNSON NATIONAL HISTORIC PARK
Explore all of these notable sites in and around Johnson City
Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park tells the story of our 36th President beginning with his ancestors until his final resting place on his beloved LBJ Ranch. This entire “circle of life” gives a unique perspective into one of America’s most noteworthy citizens by providing the most complete picture of any American president.
The park is divided into two districts — one in Stonewall and one in Johnson City. The LBJ Ranch makes up the Stonewall side of the park, while the LBJ Boyhood home and the Johnson Settlement are located in Johnson City.
LBJ RANCH
President Johnson had a deep attachment for place and heritage. The LBJ Ranch was where he was born, lived, died, and was buried. The first stop on any tour of the LBJ Ranch is at the LBJ State Park and Historic Site Visitor Center, which is located 13 miles west of Johnson City off of U.S. Hwy 290.
Visitors pick up a free driving permit and are then able to drive through the Ranch. They have the ability to stop at sites along the way such as the President’s birthplace, the Junction School, Johnson family cemetery, and the Johnson’s ranch house known as the Texas White House. Permits for the driving tour are available from 9 a.m. through 4 p.m.

JUNCTION SCHOOL
Built in 1910, the Junction School served children of rural Gillespie County for 37 years. Students walked to school to learn the “3Rs”—reading, writing, and arithmetic—in a sparsely-decorated room heated by a wood stove and illuminated by kerosene lamps.
In 1912, four-year-old Lyndon Johnson began his education in this building. Kate Deadrich taught 30 students ranging from preschool to eighth grade. The future president, youngest student in the school, often sat on Miss Kate’s lap for reading lessons.
Inspired by his brief time in this simple schoolhouse, Lyndon Johnson championed the cause of public education throughout his life. The Johnson Administration saw the passage of over 60 education bills, more education legislation than in any other presidential administration.

LBJ BOYHOOD HOME
Lyndon Johnson was five years old in 1913 when his parents, Sam and Rebekah, moved their growing family from the farm in Stonewall into a three-bedroom house in Johnson City. The President lived here from the age of five until his high school graduation in 1924.
Today the home is furnished in the early to mid-1920s period and as such depicts a rural Texas lifestyle of 75 years ago. The Boyhood Home is open daily. Park rangers give free, guided tours of the home starting on the hour, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

ALEX ANTHONY VINEYARDS
In the heart of Johnson City, you’ll want to plan for a stop to this hotspot on your next visit to the Hill Country
BY LILIANA HINOJOSAwife and I took that time to refine our wines even further and develop our new wine line up.”
Lovingly named after their son who passed away in August 2015, Darrin Cheraso and his wife, Carla Villarreal, first opened their doors to the public in February of 2020 only three weeks before the pandemic shut everything down. But instead of panicking, Darrin used the time to develop his wine line and do his research.
“From Johnson City Texas to Fredericksburg, there are usually 100,000 wine tourists that flow through the Highway 290 wineries each month” he said. “During the pandemic, everyone stayed home as wineries were ordered to close. My
As owner and wine connoisseur, he wanted an environment in which people felt relaxed and dropped all of their worries at the door.
“We went through a lot when we lost Alex so now, we help other people relax and forget their problems with good wine and a good vibe,” Darrin added. “A lot of winemakers make wine that they like. Whereas us, we do the research. We went to every winery on this stretch and we asked them what their top selling wine was and we bought them. At the end of the research, which took about five years, we had conference tables full of the top selling wines from this area
and we analyzed them. We started out with eight and created our versions of the top selling wines from all the wineries.”
Alex Anthony Vineyards’ wine line features 13 delicious, carefully crafted wines and is on its way to number 14. The majority of the grapes used to create these delicious wines are grown on a ten-acre vineyard in Brownfield, an hour south of Lubbock.
“People’s taste for wine is evolving here and we’re evolving our wine making with them,” he shared. “We use the fruit that we have to create wines that people will fall in love with.”
Sue Irwin, his sommelier, is extremely knowledgeable in all things wine. In between customers you can find her reading books on wine and viticulture, always ready to share what she has learned.
“History is just fascinating,” Sue said. “Did you know that the first place where European grapes were planted was here in Texas just south of Fort Worth?”
Sue also spoils any pups that make their way through their doors by baking homemade dog treats and putting out fresh bowls of water for them.
As the winery fills with happy customers, it is clear that its success is attributed not only to their wine, but to the feeling of belonging that you got once you step foot inside of Alex Anthony Vineyards. Children can be seen playing comfortably in the next room, couples enjoy cheese boards and endless glasses of wine.
“We crack the goofiest wine jokes that you can get!” Darrin said. “We make people feel at ease. Even if you come in here alone, you’ll leave with friends.”
Alex Anthony Vineyards is located at 213 North Nugent and online at alexanthonyvineyards.com.

SCIENCE MILL
A family destination offering a fun, interactive learning environment for all ages
BY MICHELLE BANSE STOKES, PHOTOS BY LILIANA HINOJOSAUpon first impression, Science Mill appears to be a cross between a vast technology exhibition and a child’s dream of a playground. A self-described family destination offering a fun, interactive learning environment for all ages, the captivating hands-on exhibits have a way of sparking curiosity in museumgoers of all ages.
The facility, originally a steam grist mill and cotton gin built in 1880, houses over 50 exhibits with a focus on science, technology, engineering and math, also known as STEM. Peter Claffey, chief executive officer, is excited to share how they are reaching out to the public and, most importantly, to the next generation of scientists.
“The mission of the Science Mill is to inspire all students and give them confidence in STEM,” shared Peter. “We’re giving them the tools and support needed to reach their full potential as skilled members of our twenty-first century STEM workforce. We strive to see a world where all kids can do that, regardless of economics, location, gender or race and have equal access to STEM programming and content so that they can really see themselves in a STEM career. We want them to see the full breadth of opportunities out there for them.”
With over 20 years in the museum business, Peter’s main roles include creating sustainability for the programs and
engaging opportunities for the staff. However, even with his busy schedule, he does manage to sneak away for some hands-on moments with visitors.
“I do get to slide out of the office when nobody’s looking and play with the kids,” laughed Peter. “I love to see the wow moments. One of my favorite exhibits is the Fractalarium. It puts mathematics, art, and biology together in the model based on Romanesco Broccoli. The broccoli takes the form of a fractal –a complex geometrical shape that looks the same at every scale factor. Though the exhibit has an infinitely increasing perimeter, you’ll be surprised to know that it has no area as the dimensions of each fractal become so small, they advance into nonexistence! I walk by and I’m just like a kid watching it light up and change shapes. There’s nothing like that exhibit anywhere in the world and we have it right here in Johnson City.”
Continued page 16.
While traditional museums tend to have a focus more on the past than the present, Science Mill is a modern flurry of activity that is truly a global fixture for the future.
“We bring world-class science and engaging activities into communities across Texas,” added Peter. “We’re doing things on a national level right here in Johnson City. I think that’s really fascinating to think about. I’ve been in the industry for a long time and when I see what goes into what we do, I’m just blown away. You could stack Science Mill against any museum in the country. It’s an immersive experience.”
Science Mill is located at 101 South Lady Bird Lane and online at sciencemill.org.

EL AGAVE
Much more than your basic Mexican retaurant, this Johnson City hot spot is quickly becoming a Hill County destination
BY LILIANA HINOJOSA PAULA SANCHEZTwo larger than life hombres welcome you, “El Agave” painted across the brim of their sombreros. Vibrant, hand painted booths imported from Jalisco fill the interior of the restaurant, while sounds of sizzling fajitas erupt from the kitchen and the fragrance of authentic Mexican food fills the air.
Owners Paula and Sergio Sanchez are working hard to share a piece of Arandas with the Texas Hill Country. The young couple met working at a restaurant in their early teens and together dreamed of opening one of their own.
“I was a waitress and he was the chef,” Paula reminisced.
Sergio, who comes from a long line of restaurant owners, is the mastermind behind El Agave’s delicious menu. Sergio spent his childhood helping his dad at his taco stand in Jesus Maria Jalisco Mexico and that’s what motivated him to start his own business. And while Sergio is responsible for the amazing dishes that come out of the kitchen, the restaurant would not have
been possible without the support of Paula’s dad. She lost her father a year before the restaurant opened but knows he is the reason El Agave is operating today.
“He gave us everything,” Paula added. “He was the one that gave us that boost to go ahead and start.”
When asked what it was like to work alongside her husband, Paula smiled.
“It takes a lot of time and dedication,” she said. “It takes a lot of willpower, and teamwork most of all. We support each other in the same way that the people of Johnson City support each other.”
Throughout the year, Paula and her husband give back to
their beloved community. Whether it’s providing meals for the hungry or sponsoring a local high school student, the Sanchez family is a great example of good people trying to make it in this difficult economy.
Restaurants everywhere have felt the effects of inflation, but El Agave is not cutting any corners when it comes to their food. The tortillas are homemade, the salsa is flavorful, their secret recipe cheese dip is amazing and their portions are worthy of being served in Texas. The dishes coming out of their kitchen would make any abuelita proud. If you’re in the mood for delicious, top shelf margaritas or authentic Mexican food, head over to El Agave. Their menu has everything from traditional Mexican entrees to local TexMex favorites.
“We’re simply a small family-owned business trying to stay open,” Paula shared.
The Sanchez family is currently in the process of opening up a second location in Blanco, hoping to share their delicious Jalisco dishes with Texas one beautiful city at a time.
El Agave is located at 111 US 290 and online on Facebook.

OLD ANNEX MARKET
The Burkhards share on how they started their exciting venture in an unsual location and where they are today
BY LILIANA HINOJOSAWhat started as the desire to raise funds for the local library quickly turned into a lively market that now hosts over 25 vendors. Bart and Debbie Burkhard were initially looking for a space for a library resale shop and signed a lease at what is now known as the Old Annex Market and Old Annex Office Solutions.
Formerly The Blanco County Building, The Old Annex was home to health department offices, parole office and held the judge’s court right next door.
“That sign that you see there,” Debbie said, pointing to a huge metal sign on display that reads Courthouse Annex, Blanco County. “I drug it out of the trash,” she laughed. “I
told Bart to hang it up and he said, ‘Really?’ ‘Yes, really!’ I told him.”
Bart did not want to buy the building at first, but after seeing how much Debbie really wanted it, he knew they had to make an offer.
“Finally, one day he came in and he goes, ‘Okay. I’ve worked the numbers and we can do this. Let’s go see the judge,’” Debbie shared.
The two submitted an offer and got it on the calendar. Right after putting theirs in, someone else came in with another offer. The difference between the offers, though, was that
the Burkhards wanted to bring life into the building. They wanted to help small businesses get started. The other offer was from a potential buy that wanted the property to sit on it.
“We got a start and so our goal was to help everyone else get a start. They ask you some tough questions and they expect answers,” Debbie continued, talking about how intimidating it was to present their business proposal to the Commissioners. “When they said yes to us, I knew that we were going to be okay.”
As they were renovating, a woman approached them hoping that they would rent a space out to her for her small business. The rent where she was currently operating had increased too much and she needed a change. The Burkhards agreed and word began to spread.
“We were just barely finishing the floors and she was moving in,” Debbie recalled. As they tore down the walls in the next office, a customer of the first small business said she wanted a space, too.
“So, we got her space done and then just as we got that finished, another company came in, ‘Can I have a space?!” she laughed. “We’d just finish and they would come in, finish and they would come in.”
“Everybody in our family was brought in to haul bricks and knock out walls and tear down everything,” Debbie said. “Everyone in our family has had to come up here and give some time. It’s been a labor of love”.
Once everyone was settled, they contemplated what to do with the open space in the barn and vendor booths just made sense. Fifteen of those booths opened when the Annex market did and still stand there today.
“I can’t say enough how wonderful Judge Bray and the County Commissioners were in helping us get our start here,” she continued. “Mayor Rhonda Stell has been wonderful helping us, as well as the new city manager, Rick.”
When they opened in October of 2019, the response was overwhelming.
When it comes to giving back to Johnson City, the Old Annex Market is home to an indoor Christmas tree that stays up year-round. It is run by the Garden Club and whatever sales they get from their beautiful, homemade ornaments are
donated to local charities or turn into scholarships. By April of last year, they had made enough for two scholarships. Debbie is also on the library board and she, along with the Garden Club, frequently donates boxes of books to give to the local kids in Johnson City.
“We have the best tenants in town, I just brag about them all because they’re wonderful,” Debbie added. “But we also have the best customers.”
As for the future, the Old Annex Market is for sale.
“We’re having a hard time with this,” Debbie said. “But we want to take some time for ourselves and we feel like now is the time. It’s one of those things where you know it’s time. We’re happy here and I think they’re all happy with us, but you just know.”
Today they have a waiting list of 15 vendors and a diverse selection of merchandise for women and men of all ages.
Old Annex Market is located at 200 North Avenue G and online at oldannex.com.

Historic farmhouse offers all of the modern ammenities that any discerning guest would want, along with a breath of fresh, Hill Country air
BY LILIANA HINOJOSAJohnson Odiorne Haus Bed & Breakfast sits in the middle of Johnson City. A 1940s craftsman turned modern farmhouse, this two-bedroom, two-bath B & B oozes charm and luxury. Designer Malyn Johnson never imagined she would be hosting and renovating when she was younger, yet here she is with hundreds of glowing reviews that attest to her creativity and welcoming charm.
Born and raised in Johnson City, Malyn purchased the Odiorne Haus from a friend that she’s known her entire life. The previous owners operated a cabinet shop and were renting out the house, but it really needed a breath of fresh air. Malyn knew just what to do. As soon as she acquired it, she got to work renovating it in its entirety, keeping only the original shell.
As you walk through the house, you can’t help but notice the attention to detail that Malyn put behind each item. She paid tribute to the previous owners by contracting them to do all of the cabinets that adorn the house today. She purchases her
antiques from local thrift stores and is constantly changing the decor with each season that passes.
“I want people to be inspired,” Malyn said. “I list on my website all the places that I love to shop and get the antiques from. So then while they’re here, if they love the antiques, they can go and look at all these places themselves.”
Malyn shared that she feels extremely fortunate to have been able to purchase this property and now all she wants to do is share it with others.
“I’ve had so many people always ask me about the paint and stain colors and how I got the floors to look old since they’re not old,” Malyn added.
When people stay at the Odiorne Haus, Malyn makes sure to make them feel special - no matter the occasion. She’s quick to point out different areas in the house where friends and family members could enjoy a glass of wine or homemade dinner together.
“I walk in here and I think, ‘How would I want to walk into
a place?’” Johnson said. “I want a lot of gathering places.” As a special touch, Malyn often sets up charcuterie boards composed of delicious meats and cheeses from local businesses and bottles of wine from area vineyards. Not only does this make her guests feel welcome, this also helps funnel more revenue into surrounding businesses in Johnson City.
“I want it to be special and promote the people that are here,” she said. “If I get wine from a local winery, then they’ll visit that one. It opens people’s eyes to things they didn’t know were right here.”
Whether it’s for a weekend in wine country or for a birthday getaway, guests can expect to be dazzled with this impeccable house. Malyn’s eye for design and creativity exudes from every single room. When asked how she knew where to place what, she replied with, “If it doesn’t look right, I just keep going until it does look right.”
And boy, does the Odiorne Haus look right!
Johnson Odiorne Haus Bed & Breakfast is located at 301 East Pecan Drive and online at johnsonodiornehaus.com.

THE WILDFLOWERS OF JOHNSON CITY
The best place in Texas to view Mother Nature’s most beautiful floral displays
Every spring the Texas Hill Country comes alive with fields of color. Miles of bluebonnets, Indian paintbrushes, winecups, daisies, pink evening primroses, and prairie verbena create a glorious drive and captivating photos.
Visitors will want to plan ahead and early in the year. If there is a milder winter, the wildflowers might start blooming even before March. If Johnson City gets ample fall and winter rains and has warmer than usual weather in February, you might start to see Texas mountain laurel popping out at the end of February.
For more information, contact the Johnson City Chamber of Commerce at 830-868-7684 or visit their website at www.johnsoncitytexas.info.
