A Look at the Past Sealy has deep roots in Austin County
S
ealy, located at the intersection of I-10 and Hwy 36 (just 48 miles west of Houston) in south central Austin County, was formed as a railroad town in 1879. Once part of the San Felipe de Austin Town Corporation land was sold to the railroad and named to honor George Sealy, a Galveston railroad director. Sealy became a commercial shipping center and many of the early residents were railroad employees. In 1889 a fire on Front Street obliterated the wooden commercial property near the railroad. Sealy experienced a series of misfortunes, including a disastrous Brazos River flood in 1899, the relocation of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe division headquarters to Bellville in January of the next year, and the devastating hurricane of 1900, which struck in September. The establishment, however, of such manufacturing enterprises as the Sealy Mattress Factory, the Engleking Brothers Broom Factory, and the Sealy National Bank helped to build the commercial reputation with their help the town rebuilt and today is the largest town in the County. Sealy’s claim to fame comes from the world famous Sealy Mattress. Although no Sealy mattresses were ever manufactured here, Daniel Haynes (ca. 1885) perfected the technique and equipment patents in Sealy which he later sold in 1889 to a group of investors who went on to make the Sealy Mattress a household name. Browsing through Sealy’s Historic Downtown area with antique and gift shops, quaint cafés, museums, some housed in historic buildings along with many shopping districts throughout the city are a great start to any weekend. Many historic period homes
abound in and around town to add to your enjoyment. The Hackbarth House John and Louise Hackbarth were two of Sealy’s very earliest residents. The Hackbarths were born in Texas in the mid-1800s. Their parents were from Germany. John and Louise built a twostory brick mercantile store on the northwest corner of Main and Front Streets in 1880. The Hackbarths built the small house that is currently located within the Sealy Historical Park and placed it behind their store. This is where they lived for the first few years they resided in Sealy. In the early 1900s the Hackbarths tore down their two-story brick grocery store and built a new store in the same location. In the 1930s that store was torn down and a new building was constructed to house the U.S. Post Office. That building still stands. In the late 1800s the Hackbarths built a Victorian style house at the corner of 5th Street and Eagle Lake Road. They moved their small house and attached it to the rear of their new, much larger house. In 1924, the Hackbarths tore down their Victorian style house to build a new Craftsman style home. Their small house was placed in the back yard behind their new house. The 1924 Craftsman still stands in its original location. St. John Episopal Church in Sealy was one of three churches established in 1885, shortly after the town of Sealy was founded. George Sealy, a prominent Episcopalian, on behalf of the Gulf Colorado and Santa Fe Railway Company, sold a plot of land on June 17, 1880, to Episcopal Bishop Gregg for the sum of one dollar with the specific intention of building an Episcopal Church. The original plot of land for the “Chapel of the Protestant Episcopal Church” was 30 x 150 lot on Meyer between 1st and 2nd Streets. St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church as it was called at that time was built for $1,500 and had a seating capacity St. John Episcopal Church of Sealy is the oldest church in continuous use in Sealy,. of 100 people. The congregation was made up of railroad families. “All the bricks are made from Brazos River clay,” shared Mendenhall. “There’s a lot of history behind it. It was featured from the 50s to the 90s in films, including Clint Black’s first music video, a few movies and even a Budweiser advertisement, in England of all places.”

After retiring from working in the oil and gas industry for over 41 years, Mendenhall touts his love of people as the reason behind making Saddleback Saloon his full-time gig. “It’s my masterpiece,” added Mendenhall. “I enjoy every aspect of it. And I am supported by the city, police, EDC – a lot of good people.” Saddleback Saloon is located at 207 Main Street and patrons are encouraged to follow them on Facebook for updates on their steak nights, pool tournaments, poker games, karaoke, and live music. The Haynes-Felcman House is located at the intersection of Hardeman Street and Main Street, on the left when traveling north on Hardeman Street in Sealy. The historical landmark on location reads as follows: This house was built in 1901-1902 for H. Schumacher. It was purchased in 1906 by Richard H. Haynes (1875-1942) who, with his father, founded the Haynes (Sealy) Mattress Company in 1909. Local confectionery store owner F.J. Felcman bought the property in 1927 and added on to the rear in 1929. It remained in his family until 1995. The structure is a fine example of a Queen Anne residence with a projecting front gable decorated with wood shingles, stained glass, and jigsawn brackets. The front porch also displays late Victorian details including wood balusters and frieze. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1999

AN ARTISTIC FLAIR
I
t all started with the idea of bringing a film fest to Sealy, hoping to draw in artists and spectators from Houston since the area doesn’t currently have an event of that kind. What began as a small idea quickly developed into a larger vision as Sealy Main Street board members excitedly offered fresh ways to incorporate other arts. Before they knew it, they had designed an event unlike any other where film, dance, bands, art, and culinary arts collided, battling it out for a chance to be named festival favorite.
“As a Main Street America™ accredited program, Sealy Main Street is a recognized leading program among the national network of more than 1,200 neighborhoods and communities who share both a commitment to creating high-quality places and to building stronger communities through preservation-based economic development,” describes their website. Sealy Main Street is Managed by Chelsea Humes, who is passionate about Main Street and creating a place for the community to gather. The board consists of 10 other members who envision creating places that people love to live and visit, where businesses can thrive, and where community can come together. An event like BOTA checked all those boxes, and then some! The excitement was palpable in contestants and event-goers alike, eager to connect with fellow lovers of the arts and take in as much as possible. Artists shared their passions with the crowds, and those in attendance watched in amusement. It’s not often you find as many talented people that BOTA boasted to host in one place, especially in a hidden gem of a location like Sealy. SEALY, TEXAS |

AN ARTISTIC FLAIR While the event provided unique entertainment for attendees, it also gave contestants the opportunity to gain exposure and network with fellow artists. Moments like those can define an artist’s career, creating a pivotal point in their trajectories. How impactful that Sealy Main Street was able to create such an event, bringing people together to celebrate and embrace different artistries! Competitions were hosted throughout historic downtown Sealy, highlighting many of Main Street’s iconic locations. This gave attendees the chance to see little bits and pieces of the town as they navigated the event, organically featuring its qualities and allowing those in attendance to take in all that Sealy has to offer. Interactive mural painting allowed folks to literally make their mark on the community, symbolizing how all members are an important piece of the bigger picture. It’s as if the town itself became a part of the featured art.
It truly was a community effort to pull off such an elaborate event. Venues like the Saddleback Saloon, Sealy High School, Liedertafel Hall, San Felipe de Austin Historic Site, Sealy Historical Park, the Texas Theater, and Sealy Trinity Lutheran Church were vital in making it as successful as it was. Countless volunteers donated their time, and local business graciously sponsored. As wonderful as it was, the Sealy Main Street board is already talking about how they can make next year even better! “We were very excited to have people visit from all over Texas, and even a few from out of state, that are very excited to come back for this next year,” stated Chelsea Humes, Sealy Main Street Project Manager. A Beacon of Sealy Pregancy Resource Center’s Pat Penner is busy doing God’s work PHOTOGRAPHY EMILY HENDERSON
There are those that let their hardships in life bring them down and then there are others who find a way to use their struggles in life to pave the way for others. Pat Penner definitely falls into the second category. As the executive director at Sealy Pregnancy Resource Center, she is a shining beacon for area young ladies facing an unplanned pregnancy by assisting them in writing success stories of their very own. “It’s rewarding, that’s for sure,” said Pat. “I was a teenage mother at age 16 and I received an enormous amount of support and help. I wanted to be able to give back. While working for BP as an engineer, I searched around looking for someplace I could help. I discovered an organization called Fifth Ward Pregnancy Help Center in Houston, led by Executive Director Sylvia Johnson. For ten years I volunteered my time to counsel and assist young ladies. It means so much to me to be able to share my story and encourage them.” Although Pat is now an executive director herself, she’s still volunteering. “I don’t take a salary here,” shared Pat. “I want to make sure that the money is going directly towards helping the young ladies as much as possible. “We opened our doors on February 10, 2016. I started working on this project in 2014 when I retired from BP. After I retired, my husband told me to take some time and see what God wanted me to do. Together we took a bible study class that focused on seeing where God is at SEALY, TEXAS |
work and meeting Him where He is. I took that to heart. We see God’s hands in everything we are doing. You’re going to think I’m crazy, but when we need something, it shows up. Whatever we need, people show up with it. Amazing miracles over and over again.” The good work that Pat and her team are doing in Sealy is quite different from what she experienced in downtown Houston. ‘Because we are in a small community, we are able to do more,” added Pat. “Our young ladies come in every week. We encourage them to take classes and do counseling. They learn, for example, how to care for their baby or handle a difficult child. We get ideas from them, as well, to help us improve. Some mothers say it would be nice if they had an older person in their life to help out and get ideas from. When we get into our new building, we plan to find mothers to Above, Pat volunteer and be mentors. And that new building will allow Pat and her team to accomplish even more than they are now. “We have had tremendous support from the community to assist in helping our young ladies,” said Pat. “Lifebridge Community Church gave us a home. We are outgrowing the space with fifty-plus young ladies coming in every week. Two donors gave us money to help us get started on the building. We have some work to do but we’re taking it in God’s time. We are not trying to rush it. This is God’s center, not mine. The San Felipe de Austin Corporation deeded Stephen the historic town of San Felipe. San Felipe was the seat of F. Austin State Park to the state in 1940. The park government of the Anglo-American colonies in Texas. opened the same year. S T E P H E N F. A U S T I N S T A T E PA R K The San Felipe de Austin Corporation deeded Stephen F. Austin State Park to the state in 1940. The park opened the same year. Nature Stephen F. Austin State Park protects 473 acres of wetland and hardwood forest. Cedar elm, hickory, Osage orange, green ash, cottonwood, syc amore and hackberry are the main trees growing in the park. Forest canopies shelter a dense under growth of coralberry, dwarf pal metto, American beautyberry, possumhaw, yaupon, grapevine and Alabama supple jack. Turk’s cap with its beautiful red blooms grows throughout the park. Look for bluebonnets around park headquarters in early spring.
Things to Do Explore the trails, bring a picnic, look for a geocache or wildlife, or set up camp. Learn about Texas’ early col o nists nearby at a state historic site. Plentiful wildlife Birders may search for nesting pileated woodpeckers, as well as many other species such as barred owls, warblers, yellowbilled cuckoos, white-eyed vireos, Mississippi kites and northern parulas. Ask at headquarters for a bird list. You are likely to see whitetailed deer, raccoons, opossums, armadillos, rabbits and squirrels when you visit. Other creatures tend to be more elusive, such as the bobcat. Fireflies put on a show in May and June, just as it is getting dark. Take a short walk on one of the trails to see them flitting among the trees or watch for them from your campsite. SEALY, TEXAS |

Sealybration, an annual event hosted by the Sealy Community Foundation, is a party for everyone with exciting entertainers, popular events like the IBCA-sanctioned barbecue cook-off and VIP Experience, and much more. This patriotic, family-friendly event is held annually at Sealy’s Business & Professional Women’s Park. In the 13 years since the Sealy Community Foundation began organizing Sealybration, countless hours of volunteer time have been spent pulling off this now three-day-long event that attracts visitors from all over the state for the IBCA Sanctioned BBQ cookoff, softball tournament, and top-notch live entertainment. During this time, the Sealy Community Foundation has given around $145,000 in scholarships to 135 students and donations to many non-profits. Fantasy of of Lights Lights Fantasy The Sealy Community Foundation kicks off the holiday season with Sealy’s Annual Fantasy of Lights, every December. Festival-goers will enjoy activities for all ages including live entertainment, specialty booths, a 5K and 1K fun run benefitting the Sealy PTA, the Snowball Classic softball tournament, pageants and the annual Kids Fantasy in the park with crafts, live snowfall and a visit from Santa himself. It’s all capped off with a lighted parade Saturday evening.

BLINN COLLEGE Conveniently located just off Interstate 10, the Blinn-Sealy Campus offers a range of courses for commuter students throughout the greater Houston area.
