HISTORY

DEEP ROOTS

Historical Shiner, Texas

I

SHINER IS AT THE INTERSECTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY 90A AND STATE HIGHWAY 95 IN WESTERN LAVACA COUNTY

n the valley between the Lavaca and Guadalupe rivers, Shiner began as an Indian settlement called “Half Moon.” It was a place of ranchers and cattle, the railroad and Indians, outlaws and Texas Rangers -- and cotton was “King.” Texas roots run deep in Shiner, Texas. George West, one of the first to drive cattle in this part of Texas, was married to a Shiner - and Henry B. Shiner donated the land for the town of Shiner to have its start in 1887. In 1885, a post office called Half Moon was opened at a trading post near the present site of Shiner. When the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway came to the area in 1887, it bypassed Half Moon and built through land owned by Henry B. Shiner. Shiner donated 250 acres for a right-of-way and depot, and a town soon grew around the new transportation facilities. At first, the community was called New Half Moon, but in 1888 its name was changed to Shiner. Shiner was incorporated in 1890, and L.P. Amsler was elected the first mayor. Czech and German immigrants soon became the dominant ethnic groups, and Shiner developed a cohesive Czech community through social organizations such as the National Sokol Society and the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas. The population was reported at 2,213 in 1986. The town supports a weekly newspaper, the Gazette, which was established in 1892. The most important agricultural products are dairy and beef cattle, cotton, and corn. Shiner has industries that manufacture wire, racks, dye, and tool plating, as well as distribute and machine plastic composite materials.

First opened in 1895, the Louis Ehlers Cigar Factory produced three favorite cigars, the “Becky Brown,” “Katy Lee,” and “Good Company.” The historic buildings, including the offices of the Shiner Chamber of Commerce, are located at 817 N. Avenue E/Hwy 90-A, directly across the street from the old City Hall. One of Shiner’s real jewels is the Catholic Church. Blessed under the names of Saints Cyril and Methodius, two missionaries who first brought Christianity to Bohemia and Moravia, the church is truly an awe-inspiring sight. Dedicated in 1921, the red brick Romanesque Revival style architecture features a majestic altar, painted murals, beautiful statues, and astonishing stained glass windows imported from Bavaria. In 1994, a total renovoation of the church began with the bell tower being repaired and a stained glass window of the Good Shepherd installed above the Above: Families enjoy main entrance at the front the joys of fishing at Green-Dickson of the church. pews were repaired and stained, and statues were touched up. Almost 100 years after its dedication, the church is still known as one of the most eyecatching landmarks in South Central Texas, drawing visitors from around the world who stop regularly to photograph and tour the church. Its beauty is enhanced by six stained glass windows and a huge mural of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane which overlooks the altar. The church is located at 306 S Ave F, Shiner.

The one-square-block Welhausen Park is located just a block west of downtown Shiner on Ave. E (Hwy 90-A). It features an historic bandstand, children’s playground and various monuments describing Shiner’s historic past. The picturesque setting is reminiscent of yesteryear America and beautiful when decorated with a holiday lighting display beginning December 1. Welhausen Park features a series of plaques, monuments, and historical markers. There is even a howitzer cannon on display, as well as a time capsule buried on-site. The park is open year-round for locals and visitors to the area. Street parking is free, but there are not any services or restrooms.

A CELEBRATION AS UNIQUE AS TEXAS

HALF MOON HOLIDAYS

KEEPING THE TRADITION ALIVE

HALF MOON HOLIDAYS

hether you seek small-town culture, community, or comfort food, you can be sure that Shiner knows how to throw a party like no other. Half Moon Holidays started as a Fourth of July celebration for the community and grew into a destination, drawing crowds from all over Texas and beyond. Its roots were established over forty years ago when a few locals wanted to not only celebrate their patriotism but also give back to their community.

W

“The hospital in Shiner was struggling at that time and we were trying to come up with a fundraiser,” said David Kaspar, one of the founders of Half Moon. “We knocked around the idea of starting a festival and we all worked hard to make it happen. After the hospital closed, we started using the proceeds to benefit other organizations in town.” Today Half Moon is hosted by the Shiner Chamber of Commerce and it’s one of their biggest events of the year. “I’m happy that the chamber is keeping it going,” said David. “Years ago, I met with Carlos Alvarez, CEO of Spoetzl Brewery. I had lunch with him in Shiner and asked if he’d sponsor a fireworks display. The brewery has been doing it

ever since and it’s a really great show, especially for a town the size of Shiner.” The Shiner Chamber of Commerce works hard every year to make Half Moon Holidays an incredible experience for visitors and locals alike. Allison Mozisek, chamber president, gets quite excited about the annual event that she’s been a part of for over eight years. “Half Moon is a small-town, family friendly festival,” said Allison. “It gives me such a nostalgic feeling and there’s something for everyone. You’ll find a barbecue cook-off, kid’s games, downtown parade, a 5K run, pageant, live music, and vendors. It all takes a lot of hard work but also gives all of us an immense sense of pride.” Half Moon Holidays evolved over the years and changes invariably came to be. Still, David likes to look back on the past celebrations and recall a few events of yesteryear. “There are a few things that we don’t have anymore,” laughed David. “We used to have an outhouse race. Teams had to build a homemade outhouse with wheels. One person would ride inside and four more would push it. We also had a men’s sexy leg competition. Dr. John Thornton, director of

the Texas A&M Coaching Academy, was our first winner. Then there was the beer relay with teams of four running down, drinking their beer as fast as they could, and running back. Those three events are not going on any more but it’s a part of the history of Half Moon.” Even with the changes that came to pass, Half Moon Holidays has grown by leaps and bounds. This family friendly event is unparalleled in the area and one that shows off Shiner in all her glory. “Our cook-off brings in people from all over the state and they have an opportunity to see Shiner and the type of community we live in,” added Allison. “I am always so thankful and amazed. It’s so nice to have other people who don’t live here see what goes into making Shiner ‘Shiner’.” Half Moon Holidays is held the first full weekend in July at Green-Dickson Municipal Park, 65 County Road 350. The parade travels through downtown. You can find them online at www.shinerhalfmoon.com.

TEXAS TREASURE

MUSIC FROM YESTERDAY

Shiner Hobo Band KEEPING THAT OLD-TIME FEELING ALIVE IN SHINER AND BEYOND by Emily Henderson magine life at the close of 1918. World War I had just ended and soldiers were returning home. Families and communities that had been separated were reuniting, and people felt like everyday life was worth celebrating once again. Local Texans were trying to get back to life before war, which included dances and live performances. The sounds of old-time music hadn’t filled the streets like it had before, with most bands being disbanded as members went off to serve the country. With their return, so did the happy-go-lucky songs and feelings of the past.

I

The original Hobo Band was comprised of a local group of musicians that banded together shortly after the end of the war to play for civic events, weddings, and church picnics. Proud of their Czech and German heritage, they played oom-pah-pah music and dressed in hodgepodge clothing with patches sewn on. Displaying even louder personalities, they were quite the entertaining bunch! This playful behavior personified the Hobo name, and the men had fun with the label. They quickly became sponsored by the Spoetzl Brewery – who is still their sponsor today – and were provided a keg of beer for each performance. Mr. Spoetzl himself would even join the band for local parades and hop from bar to saloon, giving out free Shiner Beer. Top photo, to go along with their hodgepodge attire, their band sign is made up of pieced together license plates. Sitting in the background playing accordion is the current oldest Hobo member, Edmund Caka, still playing at the age of 93; middle, David Kocurek, Hobo President and clown, interacting with the crowd and displaying that classic Hobo personality; bottom, “In heaven there is no beer. That’s why we drink it here. And when we’re all gone from here, our friends will be drinkin’ all the beer.”

TEXAS TREASURE The Hobos became more well-known in 1936 with Emmett Busch as their Director, wielding a toilet plunger as his baton. “I guess it was just the first thing he could grab that was close by, and it just kind of stuck,” chuckled David Kocurek, current Hobo President. From that point on, the toilet plunger baton became a Hobo symbol, being passed down from director to director. The last Hobo to hold the baton, Rita Janak, became somewhat of a mascot for the motley crew, serving as the Conductor. Passing out miniature plungers and American flag pins to kids in the crowd, she really had a passion for getting the younger generation involved in the Hobo tradition.

they do enjoy hosting informal auditions during their performances, pulling folks in from the crowd.

Ultimately, that’s what the Hobos are all about. “We come together to pass down this tradition from generation to generation, as it has been done up to this point,” said Dalton. “It’s not about money or fame, and this gig doesn’t bring that anyhow. We play together for the love of this type of music, so it isn’t lost.”

We come together to pass down this tradition from generation to generation.

The Hobos speak very fondly of Rita, who passed away just last year. “On top of being our number one fan, she was our biggest individual supporter – buying us buses and trailers, and providing us practice space in her home, including an area to record our CDs,” recounted Dalton Nollkamper, Hobo Secretary/Treasurer. The loss of their beloved conductor has left some big shoes to fill, and the Hobos have not yet appointed the next plunger-baton holder to lead them into the next generation. However,

Attending a Hobo performance is quite an experience. As most of the musicians play by memory, they effortlessly transition from melody to melody: each member taking turns leading the group in songs of yester-year. It’s easy to be taken back to simpler times, when a pint of beer and well-delivered joke between friends could carry all your troubles away ... floating off into the distance as you hum along. You can find the Shiner Hobo Band schedule by visiting: http://shinerhoboband.com/schedule.html.

Left, Shiner Hobo Band bus featuring their iconic logo, the Shiner Beer label as their official sponsor, and a photo of Rita Janak, thanking her for all her support over the years; right, Dalton’s three daughters conducting the band as one of his granddaughters joins along. The Hobo tradition continues.

TASTY DESTINATION ho would have thought that grocery stores would have been something that has changed so much over the past century? Today big box supermarkets and grocery delivery mobile apps have put an entirely new spin on what is deemed a grocery store. Well, unless you’re in Shiner. In a town with a strong focus on tradition, Patek’s Grocery & Market is a mainstay that has successfully carved its niche in today’s world. A step inside the iconic Patek’s proves that some things are better just the way they always have been.

W

“It’s a family legacy,” said Keith Patek. “My grandfather started in 1937 with a filling station that had a section for groceries and staples. Soon he started providing fresh meats to the people of Shiner. After Grandpa got to a point that he couldn’t run it anymore, he passed it on to his sons. Now we’re the third generation carrying on our family’s traditions. We’ve added some modern conveniences, such as online ordering and a rewards program but some things are better left in time-tested methods.” And running Patek’s with the same values his grandfather and father had is what is vitally important to Keith.

Patek’s sausage is made the old fashioned way, in small craft batches.

A SHINER FAVORITE

Patek’s Grocery & Market THIRD GENERATION KEEPING THE ICONIC STORE GOING STRONG AND SERVING THEIR COMMUNITY by Michelle Banse Stokes, photography by Emily Henderson

“We have a strong focus on service,” added Keith. “We’ve got big box grocery chains closing in on us in all the surrounding cities. Serving our community is what has helped us build a loyal customer base. Our family has worked to have a servant’s heart and that, combined with providing quality foods, has given us the opportunity to be in business after 85 years. Tradition runs deep in the Czech and German people here and, like my grandpa’s polka orchestra sang about in the town’s anthem Shiner Song, Shiner people are all about hard work, having fun, and eating well. We are blessed with the opportunity to carry that tradition on.” One of the most traditional aspects of Patek’s is their sausage. Although Keith, along with his five siblings, have come up with a few recipes of their own, their grandfather’s original recipe is the foundation of all of their smoked meats. “We use an old school method,” shared Keith. “We make small, craft batches using natural post-oak wood burning fire box with hickory smoke blend as a traditional smoking method to give our sausage an oldworld style flavor. No artificial liquid smoke nor modern oven-like cooking is done to our products. We believe

TASTY DESTINATION the old school methods combined with old world recipes are true to our heritage. This is the sausage that Grandpa’s parents produced across the pond and what he also made over here for his family. My dad created many new recipes and he liked to experiment with a variety of seasonings. We do, too. We love coming up with our own recipes like our jalapeno and cheddar and pepper jack varieties. We’re continuously tweaking to see what customers will want to try out. We also offer our seasonings for people who are making their own sausage at home. We don’t hide our recipe … we share it to keep the tradition going.”

“The community, our customers, and our employee family are all integral to the success of Patek’s after all these years,” said Judy. “It’s service first for us. Our focus on serving the community through service and providing quality food to people is what drives us.” Patek’s Grocery and Market is located at 224 South Avenue E and online at www.pateksgrocery.com.

Keith’s sister, Judy Patek Chumchal, is also hands-on at Patek’s Grocery & Market and shares her brother’s passion for outstanding customer service, good food, and a love of Shiner.

moked sausage tells a story. The story that Maeker’s sausage tells is one that spans more than 55 years and links two families together in legendary tastes of the past. Maeker’s Sausage and Processing began as a grocery store and meat market in 1967, opened by Robert “Tinky” Maeker and his father. Tinky’s success came from his commitment to quality and making smoked sausages like they did at home, in the country, with high quality meats and no shortcuts or additives. Today, the current owners, Doug and Melanie Nevlud, share that same commitment.

S

“I have been around meat processing and making sausage all my life,” said Doug. “I got to talking with Tinky a few years back and put a bug in his ear that I’d be interested in buying if he was ever interested in selling. He had other offers, but he wanted to keep it local and keep the tradition going. He

gave me the opportunity and we became the new owners in November of 2015.” Together with his wife, Melanie, and a host of integral employees, Doug is able to keep the tradition that Tinky put in place all those years ago. “We haven’t changed the recipe,” added Melanie. “Doug has come up with some of his own recipes, but the pork and beef sausage recipe is still intact. We simply build upon it with premium spices while continuing to offer the same hickory-smoked sausage, handcrafted in small batches. That’s important to Doug and to all of us. You see, his dream became a reality and, Above, the showcase at although we’re all a part of Maeker’s Retail Meat it, he’s the brains and brawn Market. behind the operation. He

probably doesn’t hear me say it enough, but he’s made something for himself here and it’s pretty awesome. I have a high level of respect for him.” In addition to the smoked sausage, Maeker’s Sausage and Processing offers slaughtering and processing of cattle, deer, hogs and sheep. They also operate a retail storefront for their fresh meat products, gift boxes, and, of course, their iconic smoked sausage lineup. “The Nevluds have such a commitment to quality and vision,” shared Lauren Pohler, Maeker’s business development and operations manager. “We’ve grown our footprint to more than 10,000 square feet, including a packaging facility built to federal specifications, and rebranded. All positive improvements.” Adriana Olmedo, Maeker’s production manager, couldn’t agree more. “The quality has improved because of what Doug brought us,” added Adriana. “That’s what he expects, no ifs, ands, or buts. He has shown us the quality and we strive for it.” “It takes a team of all of us,” said Doug. “It took all of us to get to where we are now.” Maeker’s Sausage and Processing is located at 813 East 16th Street and online at www.maekerssausage.com.

FAMILY TRADITION

THIRD GENERATION AND GOING STRONG

EJ’s Meat Company JEFF MATIAS RECOGNIZES FAMILY, STAFF AND COMMUNITY AS KEYS TO EJ’S CONTINUED SUCCESS by Michelle Banse Stokes, photos by Emily Henderson

E

J’s Meat Company is known far and wide for their Country Style Smoked Sausages, but few people know there’s a secret family recipe and three generations of tradition sizzling on their grill. EJ’s Meat Company’s history is rich and still being written. The latest chapter involves sticking to its roots.

… we stuff, twist and tie each link by hand. We use hog and sheep casings instead of artificial ones and smoke with pecan wood we cut on our farm. Everything is hand-spun the old-fashioned way. We take our time and nothing is rushed.”

“It’s a family tradition for us,” said Jeff Matias. “Grandma used to bring me to the plant to help with odds and ends, starting when I was about seven years old. I loved it because we’d stop at Howard’s every morning and I’d get candy and a drink. Then I’d go to work to earn my food and snacks. I did all the same things I do now … whatever Grandma needed me to do.”

“Both my mom and wife work in bookkeeping and behind the scenes while my two older kids are pitching in like I used to do when I was younger,” added Jeff. “I have two uncles that also come to help out. We also have staff that have been there forever. These men and women saw me grow up. It’s like a big family.”

Chalk it up to family tradition: Jeff is quick to share that he’s still making sausage the same way as they did when he was young. “My grandfather, EJ Simper, fine-tuned everything over time,” shared Jeff. “We’re producing the same product that he was when he started in 1982. Everything is handmade

There are many hands that go into the work and Jeff recognizes how vital his family and staff are to EJ’s Meat Company.

In addition to sausage, EJ's Meat Company is also known for their fresh meat selections and deer processing. “A lot of hunters come to us because we use small batches,” said Jeff. “You bring me your deer and you’re going to get your deer back. That’s important to us and a tradition we’ll continue.”

FAMILY TRADITION Jeff states that he is thankful to have the opportunity to do what they love and because of that giving back is important. EJ’s participates in a variety of fundraisers, charity events and sponsorships throughout the community and surrounding areas. EJ’s Meat Company is located at 1531 County Road 353 and online at www.ejmeatcompany.com.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS SECOND WEEKEND IN APRIL

Heating it up in Shiner Each year the Shiner Volunteer Fire Department turns up the heat at Green-Dickson Park in April with their annual Cook-Off and Car Show. Their main fundraiser of the year, this event helps the completely volunteer organization offset operating expenses, purchase new equipment, and, currently, fund the construction of a new fire station. “Our cook-off includes contests for pork spare ribs, half chicken, brisket, and jackpot beans,” said Shiner Volunteer Fire Department Chief Billy Petru. “We give half the calcutta back to the entrants for first, second and third placements.” In conjunction with the cook-off, automotive enthusiasts will want to hang around for the car show Saturday. “The show runs from 8 a.m. until judging at noon,” added

Petru. “There’s also a mini-tractor pull in the afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m., brought to us by the Texas Minirod Tractor Pullers Association.” Although the event evolves from year to year, there is typically live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Attendees can also participate in a 5k walk/run, a kids fishing tournament in the park, and a washer tournament. “And, as a special feature for both the young and young at heart, we have helicopters fly in and land in the park,” shared Petru. “They give the kids tours. They have so much fun climbing in and out of the helicopters.” For more information, follow the Shiner Volunteer Fire Department on Facebook.

SHINER CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS TOGETHER

Christmas in the Park Every December, patrons delight in music, tables of treats, and festive lights. Visits with Santa Claus promise to instill the Christmas Spirit in the heart of even the most stubborn Scrooge. The annual Christmas celebration features holiday music performed by local choirs and bands. Upon his arrival in Shiner, Santa Claus is escorted from the Shiner Fire Station to the park on the Shiner Chamber of Commerce’s royalty float. Patrons are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and arrive early. Shiner businesses and organizations set up annually for the Christmas Sampler which provides an opportunity for them to mingle with the community they serve. There are also vendors allowing shoppers to get all of their gifts early. For more information, call the Shiner Chamber at 361-594-4180 or visit them online at shinertx.com.

FOOTBALL STATE CHAMPIONS

St. Paul High School INTERVIEW WITH COACH JAKE WACHSMUTH REVEALS VALUES AND TRADITIONS INTEGRAL TO THE PROGRAM by Michelle Banse Stokes, photos by Emily Henderson

St. Paul High School’s football program has garnered quite a reputation in Texas. Talented and determined, the team’s performance on the field has earned them the title of State Champion for four straight years. It’s an impressive position to be in. At the helm is Coach Jake Wachsmuth, a man who wears many hats. Not only is he the athletic director, he’s also the head coach for football, girls basketball, boys and girls track and, if that wasn’t enough to keep him busy, he’s also a teacher. Coach Wachsmuth isn’t one to take the credit for the team’s success, but the numbers speak for themselves. He arrived in 2008 and the football team has brought home the state title eight times during his tenure. But Coach Wachsmuth is doing far more for the kids than producing a consistently winning team. He’s shaping legends on and off the field. “We have good kids here,” said Wachsmuth. “You can only do so much as a coach. Everyone has to decide if they want to put in the effort. It takes a lot of work and time to be successful. Our kids are motivated across the board and they have the work ethic it takes.” According to Wachsmuth, that motivation starts at home. Shiner is a very close-knit community with small town values and traditional morals. It shows in every aspect of what they accomplish.

2021 2020 2019 2018 2016 2015 2012 2010 1997 1992 1987 “Parents expect their kids to work hard and they have a lot of expectation on them,” added Wachsmuth. “You have to walk that line. We want kids to be kids but we also want them to grow up to be productive members of our community. I’ve had coaches come and want to figure out what we do with our kids. I’m quick to tell them that you cannot duplicate our program everywhere and be successful. Here it’s the culture of our community. Our kids are willing to listen to what we say because they are raised by parents who also work hard. It starts at a young age with our kids.” Those traditional values also show in how Wachsmuth leads, producing winners by maximizing the potential of the players, as well as the other coaches. “We are a running offense,” shared Wachsmuth. “We are not into the current trends. We’re an old-fashioned team and we run the ball a lot. We probably throw more than I’m giving us credit for, but we will probably never be accused of being a passing team. That goes back to our community again. If we can run the ball and stop the run, that’s because of our physicality. It has helped us over the years to keep that style.” With a town as small as Shiner, the athletes have to wear a lot of hats, too, just like their coach. “We practice kick off on Mondays, specialties on Tuesdays, and special teams on Wednesdays and Thursdays,” added Wachsmuth. “I think we put the right amount of time into

it. We’re a small school; our running back is also our punter and kicker. Very rarely do we have the luxury of doing only one thing. Our goals are not huge: flip the field, make extra points. As long as we are focused and our kids are on board, then we feel like we have an opportunity to win.” And it’s easy to get caught up in winning … especially when St. Paul’s Cardinals make it look so easy. “It actually gets tougher,” said Wachsmuth. “I used to think it would get easier, become a tradition. We have the challenge of keeping the kids hungry. I think it is a natural thing as humans that once you’ve done something, complacency sets in. We have to remember every season that it isn’t about what we’ve done, it’s about having the best season we can this year. That’s the challenge. There’s no benefit to you for what you accomplished the year before. I don’t have the magic answer but I do know that if you want to get back to the playoffs, it’s going to take hard work. Hard work is our plan. You have to appreciate the journey.” St. Paul High School is located at 424 South Ludmila Street and online at www.shinercatholicschool.org. FOOTBALL STATE CHAMPIONS

Shiner High School COACH DANIEL BOEDEKER TALKS ABOUT BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPIONSHIPS AND PLANS FOR NEXT SEASON by Michelle Banse Stokes, photos by Emily Henderson

Shiner High School’s football team can’t say that their coach doesn’t know what it takes to be a state champion. Coach Daniel Boedeker won his first state championship as a member of the Shiner Comanche baseball team back in 1992. And that was just the start. While Boedeker was head baseball coach, Shiner took home the state title in baseball in 2002. They brought home another state championship, this time in football, in 2004 with Boedeker as head coach. Today he holds the titles of athletic director/head football coach and the Comanches are on a roll. They just won two back-to-back state championships in football in 2020 and 2021. During his tenure, Boedeker has developed a uniquely thoughtful style of play and a successful system of team management that has become one of the most respected in the Lone Star State. He attributes their success to something larger than the program itself.

COACH DANIEL BOEDEKER

“Our coaching staff does a really good job of stressing to our athletes how important it is to always do your best and represent our school and town the correct way,” said Boedeker. “The expectations in Shiner are high no matter what our kids are competing in and they understand that. The support our athletes get from our community,

the parents, and the school also play a big part in motivating our athletes to do well.” Every season, Boedeker focuses on a lot more than winning the championship. Instilling skills into his athletes that will serve them throughout their lives is an integral part of the program. “With sports there are many life lessons that can be learned,” added Boedeker. “Our coaches do a great job of teaching the kids beyond their sport. We feel it is very important to create a family-like environment for our athletes to be in. We emphasize how to be respectful, deal with adversity, how to be great competitors, and develop the mental toughness it takes to get you through tough times. We feel this is important because these are skills we want them to have when they leave our program. Our goal is to not only help them succeed now, but in their life beyond high school.” On the field, Shiner is a formidable opponent and known throughout the state for their edge. Primarily a running football team, Boedeker shares his philosophy to be fast and physical and he teaches that through their run game. Special teams are also an aspect of the program, giving the team as a whole an advantage. “We do emphasize special teams because we feel like it can be a big factor in the game,” shared Boedeker. “Sometimes it comes down to one or two plays on special teams that make

the difference. Our kids work individually before practice officially begins, and then we start each practice off with a special team group each day.” Looking ahead to next season, Shiner’s coaches plan to stay the course. The old adage, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” seems to apply. “Our plans for next season remain the same as before,” said Boedeker. “We are developing kids for next year in our offseason this spring, will continue that over the summer with our strength and conditioning program and then when practice starts, put kids in positions where they can be successful and hopefully improve each week. I’m not certain that we really do anything different than most other people. There are certain things that we demand out of our athletes and one is to work as hard as you can and always remember that someone is out there trying to outwork you. We as coaches are responsible for providing a great working environment for our kids to become better athletes and great teammates.” Shiner High School is located at 510 County Road 348 and online at www.shinerisd.net.

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT DOWNTOWN SHINER

B'Marie Boutique & Coffee Bar GROWING WITH A FOCUS ON COMMUNITY AND FAMILY by Michelle Banse Stokes, photos by Emily Henderson

Small Texas towns exist in snow globes, as time capsules of a simple, forgotten way of life, perfectly preserved by locals who are fiercely dedicated to keeping things “the way they were.” At the core of Shiner you’ll find delightful small businesses that still offer service with a smile and people that remember your name. One of those businesses is B’Marie Boutique & Coffee Bar, owned and operated by Brittney Boothe, an industrious shopkeeper who learned her trade through hard work. “I opened my boutique on a whim,” said Brittney. “I had no business model or experience. It took a lot of passion and determination. I never dreamed it would grow into what it is today. I have always been super involved, especially with the customers, and have always appreciated their feedback. Building a relationship with our customers is what keeps B’Marie thriving.” And that growth is what led Brittney to expand her boutique and begin serving Shiner specialty coffees in 2021. “The coffee bar has been such a huge success for welcoming new and different customers of all ages into the shop,” said Brittney. “We are happy to be able to offer our lovely community another great component to our shop and people are loving it.” Recently Brittney took things a step further, launching an event that brings businesses together in a fun, unique way. “Shiner Downtown Market Days was established because I saw a huge potential for our downtown,” added Brittney. “A lot of people associate our town with the brewery, which is great, but there is so much more Top, the street view of B'Marie in downtown to Shiner. Sadly, many downtown areas in Shiner; middle and small towns have dried up. I thought our bottom, Brittney Boothe downtown could do so much more and goes the extra mile to that is how the market days came about. select special items for her customers. ten years now, I have learned what people want and I delivered that with my main focus on keeping downtown Shiner alive and thriving.” Juggling a boutique, coffee bar and planning market days isn’t an easy task. Brittney recognizes that she couldn’t do it alone and keeps her focus fixed on what truly inspires her every day. “My autistic son, Kenneth, motivates me,” shared Brittney. “He pushes me every day to be the best person I can be and the best version of myself. In addition, the community and town of Shiner mean family to me. Shiner has the most amazing people. I have seen on multiple occasions the entire community come together and pray over loved ones. It always reminds me that Shiner is such a special place and how blessed I am to be a part of it. The community has been so supportive of my businesses and I am forever grateful.” B’Marie Boutique & Coffee Bar is located at 709 North Avenue E and online at www.bmarieboutique.net.

MEET THE NEIGHBORS CENTRALLY LOCATED

Explore the Area SHINER IS PERFECTLY SITUATED TO ALLOW VISITORS TO EXPLORE ALL THE REGION HAS TO OFFER HALLETTSVILLE – Take just a short 14–mile drive from Shiner and you’ll find the quaint town of Hallettsville. Their annual Kolache Festival every September offers a full day of family entertainment. The day starts off with the Kolache Fest Parade on the town square, then moves to the Hallettsville Knights of Columbus Hall for the domino tournament, kolache bake-off, polka music, arts and crafts booths, kolaches and more! YOAKUM – It’ll take you a mere 14 minutes to get to Yoakum and it’ll be worth your drive. Plan your visit around the Tom Tom Festival the first weekend in June, the Yoakum Birthday Bash the last Saturday in July, or Christmas on Grand the first weekend in December. The Yoakum Heritage Museum’s Gala is in September, St. Joseph Catholic Church Gala is in February and their popular Church Picnic is always the first weekend in August. Lutherfest is in October and Yoakum’s Annual Sip & Shop is in November. GONZALES - Drive only 22 minutes down the road and you’ll find Gonzales - a charming south central Texas town that has much to offer history enthusiasts and those who enjoy spending time outdoors. Museums, historic homes and theaters, public squares, and a scenic state park make up the many attractions in Gonzales that provide more than enough to do, regardless of your interests. MOULTON – Travel ten miles north and you’ll find Moulton. The popular Moulton Jamboree is held every July at Moulton City Park. There’s free entertainment all weekend including talented, well-known music acts, a grand parade, state champion barbecue cook-off, tug-a-tractor, Go-Texan Events, tractor show, pie baking, car show, and the Miss Moulton pageant. Looking for a great meal in a historic setting? Stop in Kloesel’s Steakhouse & Bar, offering choice premium cuts of aged beef, which owners Harvey and Diana personally select, cut, trim and cook to perfection. They also serve a variety of pasta, seafood, chicken, Tex-Mex dishes, salads, and sandwiches. Top, Yoakum’s Tom Tom Festival; middle, historic monuments on the courthouse square in Gonzales; bottom, Kloesel’s Steakhouse & Bar in dowtown Moulton.
