Historical Weimar, Texas WEIMAR’S LOVE OF MUSIC STANDS THE TEST OF TIME by George Jurecka In 1929 Weimar replaced the standpipe it had built in 1886 with an overhead water tower. Both the standpipe and the new water tower were located near the intersection of West Main Street and South College Street. In early May of 1930 a section of the dismantled old standpipe was moved up the site of Weimar’s City Park in the one hundred block of East Main Street. The standpipe rim was used as a base to build a roofed bandstand in the new park located east of the two storied City Hall, Fire Department (ground level) and auditorium/dance hall (second floor). The bandstand was completed in time for the first concert to be held at 8:30 p.m. Friday, August 1, 1930. This was the first of a series of concerts held every two weeks by Weimar’s Chamber of Commerce Band under the direction of John Schindler. In the early 1900s Johan (John) Schindler Sr (clarinet) helped form a brass band for the community of Weimar. The Weimar Brass Band included his four sons: John (cornet, violin, French horn), Adolph (clarinet), Joe (cornet), and Emil “Babe” (clarinet and saxophone). This new band was called the Schindler Brass Band. The musical organization
had a series of Schindler Bandmasters. Following Johan’s leadership, around 1913, the bandmaster was Joe Schindler. John next assumed the baton and also directed Weimar’s next brass band, the Chamber of Commerce Band. The Chamber of Commerce Band musicians consisted of volunteers from the Weimar area and the musician roster constantly changed making each performance distinctive. They performed for concerts, holiday celebrations, picnics, and other special events. Trades’ Days was a special event. Merchants had drawings, giveaways, gifts, and placed merchandise on sale to lure patrons to Weimar. Usually held on a weekday (Tuesdays and Wednesdays were common), the event included food prepared by local organizations, music by the Chamber of Commerce Band, special attractions, and topped off the evening with an evening street dance that often went until midnight. Modern bands entertaining at the evening dances included Weimar’s Babe Schindler Orchestra and the Cornelson Orchestra of Schulenburg. Old time music was provided by the John Krecmer’s Orchestra of Dubina and Kana’s Orchestra of Holman.

WHISTLING DUCK VINEYARDS AND WINERY began with John and Kari Cooke and Stan and Mary Beth Johnson, who started with 50 vines in 2007. Today, those 50 vines have
grown to cover over four acres. The Cookes and Johnsons have worked very hard at creating wines that draw in guests from all around the area - and the word is spreading fast. Although it’s the outstanding wine that keeps guests coming back, it’s also the consistent flow of entertainment that they find at The Duck, an affectionate moniker given by their fans. “We do have live music every Saturday,” said John. “We try to book a variety of musicians. Some have become fan favorites, but we try not to repeat a band for two to three months. We also have First Friday where we do live music and we’ve started adding music on special weekends, as well. We have certain food events. Every Thursday is Pizza Night and we’ve started a new event called Triple D at The Duck. It’s dinner, dancing and drinks, and we’re looking to do that quarterly. AREA ATTRACTIONS Whistling Duck offers several delicious appetizer and meal selections from their kitchen and frequently offers different selections, including visits from popular food trucks. Guests are also welcome to amble down to the pond for a glimpse of some wildlife or fragrant wildflowers, sit under the large oak trees dotting the property, or take a stroll through the vineyard to witness where their wine began. “When the master plan we put together for the community came out, the priority for folks was recreation for the youth,” said Koller. ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH is located at 410 North Center Street and is a popular destination among those interested in history and architecture. St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church is located at 410 North Center Street.
The church was established as a Mission in 1888, by Father Edward Brucklin, who became first resident priest in 1892. The imposing edifice was constructed of Elgin brick by Italian and Mexican craftsmen directed by contractors L. M. and J. C. Dielmann of San Antonio. The Gothic revival architectural style reflects the central European heritage of the Czechoslovakian and German settlers.

The festival includes games for all ages, a biergarden, several live bands, a parade, arts and crafts, a barbecue cook-off, and a 5k fun run/walk. There is no charge for admission or parking.
held in 1940 and 1941. The Texas Pickle Company operated in Weimar for over 30 years and, at one time, over 300 acres of cucumbers were planted in the immediate area. The Cucumber Carnival was an all-day celebration that featured a parade, bathing beauty contest and queen coronation, among other activities. The festival was cancelled in 1942 due to the outbreak of World War II and was never held again. In 1973, Mrs. Betty Seifert chaired a committee that planned and successfully celebrated the city’s centennial. While the festival was a great

success, it was not continued in future years. However, for several years in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Lions Club held a celebration on Post Office Street complete with carnival rides and games. In addition to the Lions Club, the Weimar Garden Club began the Jackson Square Festival as a means to raise money for landscaping around the new Gazebo. The ladies invited various local organizations to sell everything from homemade ice cream to sausage-on-astick. Although it was a successful fundraiser, the festival lacked a proper carnival. The answer was to combine the Lions Club carnival with the Garden Club’s festival and christen it Gedenke!

Kasper’s Meat Market KEEPING THE TRADITION ALL IN THE FAMILY FOR THREE GENERATIONS BY MICHELLE BANSE STOKES, PHOTOS BY EMILY HENDERSON
Weimar is pretty much synonymous with smoked sausage thanks to Kasper’s Meat Market. Known far and wide for their signature recipe, customers are known to drive for hours just to load up their coolers with several links and a few packages of fresh meat. Their orders, carefully wrapped in classic butcher paper, are as unique as the experience itself. There aren’t many places left that are anything like Kasper’s. Their old screen door welcomes customers in to reveal a bygone era. Once inside, people discover it’s more than just the smoked sausage, bacon and fresh meat that makes the market so special. It’s the small-town conversations, laughter and sense of family that have kept customers standing in line for over three generations. A brother-and-sister team, Maurice Kasper and Jean Kasper Blaha are currently at the helm of their family business. It was difficult to get these busybodies to sit for a spell, but I eventually twisted their arm to talk with me for a bit about the origins of their historic meat market. “Our grandpa’s half-brother started it all in 1917,” Maurice said. “After Dad came back from the Korean War, Grandpa needed him to work here. So, he stayed in Weimar and worked in the meat market for 72 years. We just wanted to keep the tradition going.” And although Kasper’s Meat Market has been in the same spot since my own childhood, it turns out that their current location wasn’t always a meat market.
“This used to be an old grocery store,” Maurice said. “My dad bought it back in the late 60s. They tore the wall out when we bought the barber shop next door … that’s where we make the sausage. The rest is history! We’re going on 105 years this coming October.” Growing up with his family business, Maurice was certain from the get-go that this was what he was cut out to do. It’s easy for him to explain what motivated him to stay with the meat market for so many years. “Watching my dad do it,’ Maurice said. “I do this because of the love for my dad and my grandpa. I worked with my dad here for 52 years. We were like two peas in a pod.” “Dad worked hard,” Jean added. “When he got cancer, and he was getting very weak, I told him, ‘Daddy, it’s time to go home.’ He told me that he was sure we could make Above, brotherit at the market on our own. WEIMAR’S TRADITIONS And with both Maurice and Jean spending more and more time with grandchildren and family trips, the fate of Kasper’s Meat Market is left hanging in the balance. Customers often wonder if there will be a new generation of Kaspers to take over the iconic market. “Unfortunately, no,” Maurice said. “After the third generation in any business in America, 98 percent of those businesses sell out or close up. We are the third generation and we don’t have a fourth generation that wants it. So, time will tell.” Still, Maurice and Jean aren’t throwing in the towel right now. In fact, they plan to keep doing things in the same style that their family started generations ago. “We take care of people,” Jean added. “Good times and bad. We have employees that have been here awhile and really great customers. It’s a loyal community and they become friends. My Dad was a special man and that’s why we’re keeping it going. I know he’s watching over us and wouldn’t want us to quit. We are here to serve people like we always have and appreciate all of our customers.” Before I left, I asked Maurice to tell one of his dad’s jokes, something the late Mr. Johnnie Kasper had been known for in these parts during his life. “My dad was on his deathbed and the preacher came in,” Maurice said. “It was one o’clock in the morning when he came in to give him his Last Rites. Dad said, ‘I have a joke for you.’ Dad continued and told him about these three mice that died and went to heaven. At the pearly gates, St. Peter asked them what one wish they wanted and said it could be anything at all. The mice stated that they wanted roller skates because they’d spent their lives on Earth running from a tomcat. St. Peter granted their request. A few days later, the tomcat died and went to heaven. In a similar fashion, St. Peter asked the tomcat what wish he wanted. That old tomcat told him that after chasing three mice his whole life, he wanted to sit back, do nothing and have his food come to him. After about a week, St. Peter asked the tomcat how he was liking Heaven. The tomcat exclaimed that it was the best week he’d ever had and he was really enjoying his ‘meals on wheels.’ Kasper’s Meat Market is located at 119 East Post Office Street in downtown Weimar.

Spend a Saturday morning strolling the sidewalks in downtown Weimar and you’re bound to discover something that speaks to your soul. Years ago, while out casually shopping, I remember being surprised at all the treasures tucked inside Gathered Goods. Today, I am just as enthralled as I was the first time I stepped foot inside. This boutique - specializing in the handmade, the local, the vintage and the unique - welcomes passersby to stop in, no matter if they buy something or not. You see, behind their front door is a little piece of the puzzle that makes Weimar the beautiful place that it is. Founded in 2016, Gathered Goods is a living display of owner Carla Romine’s distinct style. I’m always eager to see how Gathered Goods has been transformed for the season and rarely does a weekend pass by that doesn’t find both my husband and I checking out the latest finds. And, yes,
you read that right. That husband of mine is usually the one suggesting we stop in because there’s plenty that even he can’t resist in this incredible place. “Everything we have is hand-picked by us,” Carla shared. “What we have in the store just kind of comes to us. We try to learn and discover what the community wants. We wanted to be a different kind of store and really do something different. We named it Gathered Goods to create a place where people are welcome to not only shop, but also simply come talk and visit. It’s a gathering place of people and goods.”

The motivation behind Gathered Goods is not that of your usual small business startup. A combination of events, mixed with a touch of serendipity, is what set the plan in motion for this one-of-a-kind emporium. “My husband passed away in 2014 and I was just kind of fluttering around,” Carla said. “I had been a stay-at-home mom and all of my kids were gone. They all had their own lives and they said, ‘Mom, you’ve got to do something. You need to get busy.’ So, that was my inspiration.” But it wasn’t all smooth sailing from there. In 2022, a tragic event that shook the entire community left Carla questioning whether or not Gathered Goods would continue to open its doors. “After my accident, I wanted to close the store,” Carla shared. “I didn’t want to go back but so many good friends stepped up and kept it going. Everyone coming together makes us all want to love more and do more … that’s wonderful. This store has been a gift to me.” Strong in her faith, Carla is quick to talk about the guiding force that keeps Gathered Goods open, even during tragedy. “God always opens another door,” Carla shared. “For some reason, that store is not wanting to close and it’s not me, it’s the community. People have shown us that there is a need to have a place to just come and visit. People who visit the store are not just customers, they’re a part of Gathered Goods. “My faith has seen me through a lot of trials. I want to help people through difficult times. When people walk in and they have something going on in their lives, we sit down and share with them. It’s God that pulled them in with what He wants us to do.” Looking towards the future, Carla intends to simply keep going where God leads her. “There are no plans,” Carla said. “It’s whatever walks in the door and what God wants us to do. We’re open. We need a bigger space but we haven’t come up with a solution yet. We’re growing. Gathered Goods is full of merchandise and also full of life. That’s the way we want it.” Gathered Goods is open Thursday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. There is a number on the door that patrons can call if they want to shop outside of normal business hours. “We are very open to anyone stopping by that just wants to visit,” Carla added. “You don’t have to buy anything if you just want to walk through and see it. The mission of the Weimar Golf Course is to offer the community, at a reasonable price, a golfing experience second to none in the area. Ranked No. 17 of the best nine-hole courses in Texas by the Dallas Morning News, the municipal course welcomes both members and non-members alike. The course is well-maintained and a pleasure to play by golfers of any skill level. Having played the course many times myself, I can affirm that statement to be true. I scored my first birdie on hole three and still have the Titleist on my office desk as a memento. Recently I had a chance to sit down with Jimmy Heger, a member of the Weimar Golf Course board of directors. He’s pretty proud of his local golf course and for good reason … it has been a quintessential part of the Weimar community in some fashion since the 1920s. According to their website, Tom Hill and Hans Brasher started playing golf with three golf holes in the middle of a cow pasture that over the years evolved into the present nine-hole format. Shortly after World War II (1949) several of the returning veterans decided to relocate and build new grass greens. And the rest, as they say, is history. “I’ve only been playing the Weimar Golf Course for 50 years,” Jimmy said with a laugh. “I was born and raised here and it was something I always enjoyed doing. I was eight or nine-years old when my dad introduced me to the game.”

WEIMAR’S PASTIME The Weimar Golf Course has seen many improvements over the years and some recent additions. “We’ve had two consultants help us out tremendously and we’ve been very blessed,” Jimmy said. “Membership is up and we’re taking in enough revenue to keep the course in tip top shape. The Weimar Golf Course membership is a good value for the money, probably one of the best in the state.” The Weimar Golf Club, Inc. is affiliated with the Texas Golf Association and the United States Golf Association. With the help and cooperation of the City of Weimar, the Weimar Golf Club has been able to operate a recreational facility that has become successful and a definite asset to this community. “The City of Weimar has been very helpful,” Jimmy added. “The entire community has. We simply hope to continue to maintain the golf course and do anything we can to make it better.” In addition to the nine-hole course, the Weimar Golf Course has a pro-shop, cart rental, a cart shed and a driving range. The Weimar Tavern is a simple, old-school joint that takes an individual with a love for small-town Texas charm to admire it aesthetically. I guess I’m one of those people. I find a whole lot of character in the hangout’s old bar-back, wooden floors, and old jukebox songs. And although there’s a modern jukebox in place now, the old beerhouse still has the same feel that it did when I walked though those tavern doors for the first time years ago. Looks like some things do indeed stay the same as you remember them. The Weimar Tavern is a welcoming place—so long as you don’t get too out of line. There’s a pool table, locals looking for a domino game, and friendly staff ready to bring you a Lone Star. The current owner, Mason Lapham, has been at the helm for over 17 years with the help of a small, dedicated staff. “We opened in the middle of December 2004,” Mason said.
“I’ve always been kind of doing my own little business stuff and this seemed easy. Plus, I had good people to work with … really good people. One example is Leona Jones who used to own the place. She still works here and has the most longevity at the Tavern. She retired for about five months and then said, ‘To hell with this, I’ve got to do something.’ She still works a few hours throughout the week.” No one can run a bar for long and not have an interesting story or two to tell. Mason was quick to share one of his favorites that says a whole lot about the Weimar community as a whole. “One of the most surprising moments is when we had a mishap with the work schedule,” Mason shared. “Whoever was supposed to show up to work didn’t show up when the place was supposed to open at 3 p.m. Now, back then I had a key outside hidden for whoever needed to service the place

“The reason I keep it going is that I know if I town. sell it, it’ll just turn into another resale shop,” Mason said. “It won’t be a bar anymore and this town needs a bar. After four o’clock, when people start getting off work, that’s the retirement table up front. They’ve already worked their 60-plus years. They have no place to go. So, that’s what keeps me rolling. I don’t make a fortune on it but I do it just to keep a bar in town.”

Charlie & Rita MEET THE HERZIKS
LOCAL COUPLE SHARES WHAT MAKES THEIR MARRIAGE AND THE TOWN OF WEIMAR SO SPECIAL BY EMILY HENDERSON
The Herziks have been happily married for 26 years and it all started with loads of manure – we bet you haven’t heard a love story that begins like that! While working for M-G, Charlie handled purchasing and Rita was his fertilizer contact. Ten years of talking shop over the phone somehow led to love. So much so, Rita took a leap and left Houston to move to Weimar, where her new husband Charlie was the only soul she knew. “I think the hardest thing I ever did was sell my home in Houston and quit my job and move here with only two thousand people. It was an adjustment for sure,” Rita admitted. “We were freshly married and I’d come home for lunch. She would be sitting on the couch then, and she would still be sitting there when I got home at the end of the day,” Charlie chuckled. “I could tell she was struggling. I asked her over and over, ‘How can I help? What can I do?’” he reminisced. “I knew no one and had nothing to do! I had worked since I was thirteen and not having a job was very depressing,” Rita recalled. “I remember walking into the pharmacy. John Anders was the Pharmacist and I asked him if he needed help. He said, ‘I can only pay $5,’ and I replied, ‘I’ll pay YOU, just let me go to work and get out of the house!’ And from that day forward, my heart opened up to Weimar and I just fell in love with the town as I met the people here.”

Charlie and Rita Herzik as they reflect on their continuous years of service in the Lion’s Club. “I was able to meet another woman making the same type of adjustment, so we were able to do that together and support one another. It’s marvelous how the right people come into your life when you need them most,” Rita went on. “It’s been a wonderful experience to be here and have the community rally around you when you’re in need. You don’t get that in a big city.”
When Charlie and Rita aren’t volunteering, they enjoy being at home and planning their next adventure together. Whether it’s one of their many cruises, or a full Saturday of watching the grandkids participate in their extracurriculars, they make sure to soak in every moment together.
“
“We’re trying to spend as much time as we can with our grandbabies, because we have no idea how long we’re going to be here and what could happen,” said Rita. “Charlie has been quite a blessing to my children and my great grandchildren. They just think he hung the moon. Of course, with him never having children, he didn’t go through the growing up stage – he got them when they were well into their maturity, lucky guy! But the great grandbabies he has been around since their birth. And we’re expecting our 12th great grandbaby now, she’ll be born in December!”

Flowers by Judy OWNER JUDY DUSEK TALKS ABOUT HER LOVE FOR SERVING HER COMMUNITY BY MICHELLE BANSE STOKES, PHOTO BY LORI OLIVAREZ-LIGUES Sometimes joy is a choice, other times it’s so inherent it literally exudes from every crevice. So is the entrance to Flowers by Judy in downtown Weimar. Shoppers drawn in by the store’s seasonal window display wade through rows of live plants, delightful gifts and silk displays before being greeted by the store’s owner and florist, Judy Dusek. And although it isn’t always happy moments in life that bring us into a flower shop, the fresh blooms offer their beauty and fragrance just the same, beckoning us to choose joy. Judy’s flower arrangements make weddings more spectacular, anniversaries happier, birthdays brighter and honor loved ones when families have lost someone dear. Over the years, she’s delivered numerous bouquets of love to me from my husband and, when I needed her the most, arrived perfectly on time at the church with an elegant arrangement for my own mother’s urn. Judy is an icon in Weimar and she’s been arranging flowers for about as long as I can recall. “I’ve been in business for 38 years,” Judy said. “I was only 20 years old when I started. I had no desire to go to college, so this is where I ended up.” Following her passion, Judy’s love of flowers was instilled in her at an early age. “There was a local florist here in Weimar,” Judy shared. “When I was in high school, I would go there and just hang out with her. I knew that becoming a florist was something I really wanted to do. After I graduated, I attended the Houston School of Floral Design.” After receiving her education, the Weimar native returned home to discover that her own hometown was exactly where she would fit in. “It just so happened that one of the flower shops here in Weimar was for sale,” Judy added. “My parents said that if I wanted to go ahead and go into business, they’d buy the coolers. I went ahead
and took over the whole building. Years later, we moved into this building that I am in now to increase our space.” All these years later, Judy’s passion remains the same as when she started. “I simply love flowers,” Judy said. “I like to pick my flowers and that is very important to me. I love everything I do, but I would say that funeral work is my biggest passion. Weddings are nice, don’t get me wrong, but with funerals I am working with an exact timeframe. I have to get it done. I don’t have tomorrow or the next day to finish the arrangements … I have to finish it before I can go home and end my work day.” Shoppers will find that Flowers by Judy offers more than blooms to their customers. “In addition to the flowers, we also carry an extensive line of gifts,” Judy said. “We have a wide variety of artificial flowers, balloons, bereavement items, greeting cards and gift items. It’s always changing so you just have to come in and see for yourself.” Always remembering her roots, Judy remains passionate about her hometown. “I am a firm believer in supporting the town you are in,” Judy added. “I am truly blessed to have been here in business as long as I have been. There aren’t many truly public places left in America. Most of our shared spaces require money to access them. Retail stores downtown exist to sell people things. Coffee shops expect patrons to purchase a drink or snack if they want to enjoy the premises and free Wi-Fi. One place, though, remains open to everybody and anybody. The public library requires nothing of its visitors: no purchases, no membership fees, no policies against loitering. You can stay and hang out all day and you don’t have to buy anything. You don’t need money or even a library card to access a multitude of on-site resources that includes books, e-books and magazines, job-hunting assistance, computer stations, free Wi-Fi, and much more. Libraries still welcome everyone.
MISTY STRODE LIBRARY DIRECTOR
The Weimar Public Library has a new director at the helm, welcoming both locals and visitors alike to visit the little library housed in the historic Railroad Depot. Misty Strode, feeling like she needed a new direction in her career, brings with her a combination of strengths from both the medical and education fields. She accepted the position in January 2022 and immediately felt like she was where she belonged.
“The people, the family that we have here at the library in
Weimar, that motivate me,” Misty said. “It was a blessing for me and the library group. I knew from day one that this is where I wanted to be.” Although we normally associate libraries with books, the Weimar Public Library has so much more to offer. People may wonder if the primary role of the local library is still on the books themselves. “Not as much,” Misty said. “Yes, we have books, over 16,000 of them actually. Today we have a lot of people coming to the library for the programs. We also offer different services like faxing, copying and printing. People that need help with computers and we can assist with that, as well.” The programs that the Weimar Public Library offers are wide and varied, just like the people they serve. COMMUNITY ASSET on Thursdays. Turtle Wing comes by for story time, unique arts and crafts and other activities. With the help of my staff we have story time, show movies, arts and craft classes and other various programs. We also offer, with the help of Friends of the Library, programs that touch on different community needs. For example, this weekend we are hosting a safety course with a focus on staying out of harm’s way while at home, out driving, and running errands.” The support the library receives from the Weimar community, especially the Friends of the Library organization, is indispensable to their continued success. “Friends of the Library is a group that helps the library,” Misty said. “They not only assist with extra funding but they also help with various programs. They shift community attention to the library and bring awareness that a library isn’t just books, we have a lot more going on.” Although Misty is still very new in her position, she’s already made substantial improvements that benefit everyone in the Weimar community and beyond. “We became an accredited library this year with the Texas Library Association,” Misty shared. “This really opens up opportunities for us to expand and grow.” The Weimar Public Library is located at 1 Jackson Square and online at www.weimarpubliclibrary.org.
