Historical Weimar, Texas
Centrally located on Interstate 10 and US 90 between San Antonio, Austin and Houston, Weimar is a friendly community founded by mostly Czech and German descendants.
Weimar was founded in 1873 when it was discovered that the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway was going to be constructed through the area. The town was first named Jackson, after D. W. Jackson, a native Georgian who donated land for the railroad and town site. The name Jackson didn’t stick and the majority promptly chose the name Weimar. An early account says that resident Thomas W. Pierce visited Weimar, Germany, and was favorably impressed, passing on encouragement to others that their new town should be its namesake.
The Weimar post office was established in 1873 and was incorporated in 1875. Weimar started with only a few hundred people but grew to over 1,000 residents in only ten years. It would soon be known far and wide for pecans, dairy, and poultry products. The Weimar Mercury, the first town newspaper that still exists today, was established in 1888.
Industry and agriculture continue to dominate the area today. Weimar was well known for leading the area in sheet-metal works, oil field gasket manufacturing, feed, poultry, corn, pecans and beef.
A strong history of baseball exists in Weimar. Veterans ParkStrickland Field was ahead of its time when it was built in 1948, and was the first lighted baseball field between San Antonio and Houston. Veterans Park remains a state-of-the-art baseball stadium, having hosted a Babe Ruth League World Series Tournament in 2005.

Above, from top, Rex Kloesel stands with M-G’s robotic pallet stacker (purchased in 2019, it stacks up to 20 bags per minute); a few of the familiar trucks that distribute feed across the state. Facing page, the main entrance to M-G Feed Division from the I-10 service road.
As a student at St. Michael School, Rex Kloesel wrote a report about Weimar’s local M-G Feed Co. A few years down the road he began working at M-G, loading trucks off and on through high school and taking a full-time position in 2000. Today, Rex serves as President of M-G Inc. If written now, more than three decades later, that school report would be quite different as M-G has grown and continues to progress, but its roots are still deeply set in the same little town.
Let’s look at some of the components of this now multimillion-dollar corporation.
HISTORY - Legend has it that Marvin Gilbreath came to Weimar by train in 1938 with only 15 cents in his pocket. Over the course of a few years, Gilbreath worked several jobs finding his niche in poultry and produce. Within five years of his arrival, Gilbreath purchased property in downtown Weimar and established M-G Produce Co. in 1944. In 1956, M-G was incorporated, and the company went public in 1961. Today, only his initials remain as Marvin Gilbreath sold his portion of the company in 1965.
LOCATION - When it opened in 1944, the feed division of M-G was located downtown, next to the railroad tracks, where it stood for close to half a century. The current feed mill with its iconic ten-story high tower, prominently visible to I-10 traffic, was built in 2001. This new location and structure were necessary for the ever-increasing production and distribution demands.
PRODUCTION - “We make all of our own feeds,” Rex declared, “we are a general line feed mill, which means we produce feed for horses, cattle, poultry, deer, pigs, goats, rabbits and more. It’s a broad spectrum.” In a constant desire to give back to the community, M-G makes every effort to use local resources. “We buy our commodities locally as much as possible,” Rex said, “local farmers bring their corn and milo in. We purchase from them straight out of the field.” Feed is made two or three tons at a time, following a one-ton formula. Each formula is unique to the individual animal.
Continued on page 12.
DISTRIBUTION - Almost from its inception, M-G has delivered feed near and far. In 1947, only three years after opening, Gilbreath’s company reached $1 million in annual sales. “They realized early on that we could truck feed out to other communities rather than just serving as a local production plant,” Rex explained, “and that changed everything. Over the years that radius has grown from within 50 miles to a radius now of more than 200 miles.” M-G sends an average of ten trucks out daily, with each truck holding 22 tons. “We are making anywhere from 250 to 300 tons of feed a day,” Rex clarified.
COMMUNITY-INVOLVEMENT - “We, at M-G, are proud of the fact that when people see our logo they think of Weimar, Texas,” Rex stated humbly. “We want that to be a positive for Weimar because over the generations of time we’ve been around, the people of Weimar have supported M-G to allow us to continue to be successful.” To give back to its beloved community, M-G gladly sponsors Weimar schools, livestock show sales and youth sports teams. “I love to see kids running around at the football game or in town, and the back of their shirt says ‘M-G Incorporated,’” Rex confessed.
When people see our logo, they think of Weimar, Texas. "
Though focused on M-G Feed Division, this article would be profoundly negligent not to include the following:
M-G FARM SERVICE CENTER - This component of the M-G corporation has been a successful business since M-G’s inception in 1944. While the structure has grown exponentially over the years, its physical site on Post Office Street in downtown Weimar persists. This retail center sells far more than M-G Feeds. In fact, according to long-time employee Mickey Mangum, “the most often heard phrase from customers would have to be, ‘I can’t believe y’all have …’ this or that or whatever.” From cooking supplies to guns and ammunition to frozen meats, the M-G Farm Service Center’s inventory is truly impressive. With a garden center, fencing supplies and a complete line of Stihl® products, this small-town shop offers big-city variety.
Clockwise, from top left, Manager Edwin Bullock and Mickey Mangum are always ready to assist customers at M-G Farm Service Center; Stihl products, like these chainsaws, are common purchases; a view of the garden center, across the street from the farm service center.
Antiques on Main
MASSON SHARES TREASURES FROM DAYS GONE BY
As I stepped into Antiques on Main, I was thrown back in time. I spotted dishware I used at my grandparent’s house, knick-knacks that perched on my Oma’s hutch, books still found on the shelves in my father’s office and an assortment of cameras that left me in awe. Eager to hear this little shop’s story, I carefully shifted porcelain pieces on a table to make room for my notebook.
For store owner Janet Masson, the antique business surfaced as a solution to the problem of having too much stuff. “My husband (Ralph) would buy anything in sight that he liked,” Janet chuckled, “and he had to get rid of some things to make room for other things. We started out renting a booth at the Antique Mall before buying this.”
More than 20 years ago, charmed by the prospect of smalltown life, Ralph and Janet Masson purchased a cabin outside Weimar. The property served as their weekend getaway for a decade. During this time Ralph and Janet opened a booth in the antique mall. In 2013, a few years after the mall closed, they purchased the current store. Ralph passed away in 2022. “He loved this shop,” Janet attested. “It was good for him; it gave him a reason to go out and look for new things. Ralph was always on the search for the next treasure.”
The most talked-about piece in the store is a giant Ferris wheel. “We got it at the end of an estate sale,” Janet began, “no one bought it because it was larger than the door. But Ralph said he was going to buy it, and he did.” With a total of more than 8,000 pieces, the Ferris wheel had to be taken apart in chunks to get it out of the house and into the Masson’s van. The very next morning, Ralph brought it to the shop and reassembled the entire structure. Janet proudly recalled, “I asked Ralph how many pieces were missing, and he said, ‘not a one.’” The Ferris wheel, which is not for sale, sits in Antiques on Main’s front window and serves as their OPEN sign. “When it’s running, we’re open,” Janet stated simply.
One of Janet’s favorite things about having the shop is the interesting people she meets. “People come in here from everywhere,” Janet smiled, “we’ve had people visit from Japan, Korea, Brazil, Germany, Canada, England, Ireland, all over the US … they’re fascinated, and they are fascinating for me. We make them coffee, and they sit and visit.” Recently, on a moment’s notice, Janet opened the shop for a bus of travelers from France on a Texas tour. “It was a big bus … about 30 people,” Janet explained. “The people were lovely. We used translate on our phones to communicate English and French. They stayed for maybe two hours, and the tour guide said they may be back with future groups. So that’s great.”
The everchanging inventory at Antiques on Main is vastly eclectic and never stagnant. One of the particularly noteworthy areas of Janet’s shop is the Texas books section, featuring books about the great state as well as works written by Texans. Go see for yourself. Open on Saturdays; just watch for the rotating Ferris wheel. Antiques on Main is located at 113 East Main Street in downtown Weimar.

Rodeo Grill
IRVING HERNANDEZ AND MARIA RODRIGUEZ SHARE HOW RODEO GRILL CAME TO WEIMAR
The complete tale of the restaurant located at the corner of East Post Office and North Center streets in downtown Weimar must be told in three parts. Here follows the stories of Maria, Irving, and finally that of Rodeo Grill.
Maria’s story – In 2015, Maria Rodriguez found the building she wanted as the site of her future restaurant. When she inquired, Maria was told the building was only for rent, not for sale. Maria was both surprised and excited when the owner contacted her sometime later. “The owner called me,” Maria shared, “and he said, ‘do you want to buy my building?’ and I said yes.” After the purchase, Maria put her husband to work turning the vacant building into a classy restaurant. “My husband did so much work, the floors, the walls, the doors,” Maria described. “We even put in that side window,” she said, pointing to the large window facing Center Street.
Maria opened Rodeo Restaurant in 2018. She enjoyed the work and challenges of running the restaurant; unfortunately, Maria’s health took a bad turn, forcing her to close less than three years later.
Continued on page 20.
Facing page, Irving Hernandez serves up one of Rodeo Grill’s specialty margaritas; above, sizzling fajitas are a popular order at Rodeo Grill.
Irving’s story – Irving Hernandez began his journey in the restaurant business as a dishwasher, moving to the kitchen, then waiting tables and advancing to manager in a short time. It seems the restaurant business is in his blood. In addition to Irving, his wife, his brother and his sisterin-law are all restaurateurs. Wanting to raise their children in a small town, Irving and his wife moved to the area more than 20 years ago. “Everybody knows everybody; it’s like a big family,” Irving confirmed, “It feels safe.”
Rodeo Grill’s story – Reluctantly, after much thought, Maria put the building that had housed her restaurant on the market. Irving, aspiring to open a restaurant in Weimar, approached Maria about renting her building. Maria had full intent to sell the property and had turned down previous offers to rent or lease. This time, however, Maria saw something in Irving that changed her mind. “I didn’t want to keep it closed,” Maria explained, “and I knew Irving would open it as a restaurant again.” Renting the space from Maria, Irving made a slight name change, crafted a new menu and opened Rodeo Grill in May of 2024.
Boasting an extensive menu with a Mexican flare, each dish is made from scratch using tried-and-true recipes. In
addition to traditional enchiladas and fajitas, Rodeo Grill offers a wide variety of specialty dishes. “We serve a lot of pastas and burgers,” Irving affirmed, “and salads. People like fresh salads.” One of the most unique and commonly-ordered items in the grilled salmon salad. “Some people come in just for that,” Irving shared, “they say we are the only place to have it.” The margaritas, which come in an assortment of flavors, are always a hit at Rodeo Grill as well.
Customer satisfaction is of highest importance to Irving. “I focus on the people who come in now,” Irving stated, “not just on growth. And if we grow, that’s good too.” Visiting with the customers who come into Rodeo Grill is Irving’s favorite part of running the restaurant. “I like to talk with the people,” Irving professed, “some of them I’ve known for many years, and they ask about my son or my daughter.” While he is still comfortable in the kitchen, customer interaction is key to Irving’s passion.
Rodeo Grill is located at 101 East Post Office Street in Weimar. Give it a try.
Left, crispy tacos are the perfect lunch plate, especially with complimentary homemade chips and salsa, above, not in the mood for Mexican food? No problem. Rodeo Grill has selections that'll put a smile on everyone's face.

Meet Peggy Guenther
PEGGY SHARES ON HER LOVE OF BANKING, BIG-GAME HUNTING AND THE PEOPLE OF WEIMAR
It is said “home is where the heart is” and “there’s no place like home.” Weimar native Peggy Guenther confirms her heart is in Weimar, and there is no place like it! If you know Peggy, this may serve as confirmation rather than enlightenment. Regardless, Peggy’s intense passion and commitment to this little Texas town is worth the read.
“Weimar is the only place I’ve ever called home,” Peggy declared, “and I’m not going anywhere.” Born and raised in Weimar, Peggy attended St. Michael Catholic School and graduated from Weimar High School. Going into the city never attracted Peggy. “I remember sitting at a red light longer than it would take me to get from my house to town,” Peggy exclaimed, “and I live out in the country.”
Growing up a few miles from town, Peggy loves country life. In fact, Peggy chose to raise her sons, Preston and Clayton, just across the road from her own childhood home. “I appreciate the quiet of the country,” Peggy began, “especially watching the day come to life. Morning is my favorite time.” To complement her love of the outdoors, and thanks to a dear friend, Peggy recently added hunting to her already-enormous bag of tricks. In 2021, Peggy proudly joined the elite group of Texas Big Game Awards winners.
Employment began early for Peggy. “I have been working since seventh grade,” she professed, “I worked at Kocian Bakery on Post Office Street.” She held several local jobs through high school, sometimes more than one at a time. Peggy’s career, however, began in 1981 when she took her first position in banking. With more than 30 years at Hill Bank and Trust, Peggy has found her niche. “I like the grind. I like my little hole in this office,” Peggy confessed with a grin, “I hope they let me rot here.” Peggy is very likely to get her wish. According to Charlie Bittner, Hill Bank Chairman and CEO, “Peggy’s value to the bank and this community is immeasurable. To Peggy, nothing is work. She sincerely loves to help people; everybody is important to her.”
In addition, Peggy is an enthusiastic volunteer throughout the community. The Catholic church, the Heritage Museum and Weimar schools all rely on Peggy for her continuous hands-on support. “I’m very involved at St. Michael Catholic Church. Father asks me to do something, and I do it,” Peggy stated matter-of-factly, “at the museum, I’m a charter member and involved in fundraising there.” When her sons were in school, according to Peggy, “the bleachers were my life.” Peggy can still be found in those bleachers as she remains actively involved in local sports and school activities.

Everybody here cares ... it truly is the perfect place to live.
Never one to showboat and quick to acknowledge others, Peggy credits family and friends for her endearing qualities. Peggy learned strong work ethics from her father, while her mother passed on attributes of loyalty and unconditional acceptance.
“Daddy was ‘work, work, work;’ he did not believe in wasting time,” Peggy shared, “… my mother always told me ‘We’ll support you wherever you go.’”
Peggy’s sons revealed her competitive spirit and love of sports. Her friends and coworkers expanded Peggy’s passion for helping those around her, experiencing the great outdoors and having fun. Above all, Peggy credits the people of Weimar for instilling her affection for this little Texas town.
“Everybody here cares,” Peggy boasted, “it truly is the perfect place to live.”
From top, Peggy pictured with her winning mount at the Texas Big Game Awards banquet in 2021 (courtesy photo); Hill Bank & Trust is in good hands with Barbara Brandt, Charles Bittner, Judy Winkler, and Peggy Guenther who bring more than 170 years of banking experience.

OVER 50 YEARS
Weimar Home Furnishers
FAMILY LEGACY CONTINUES FOR THE KLESEL FAMILY
Weimar Home Furnishers has a history of making families smile in Weimar for over 50 years. A newspaper clipping from the August 31, 1972 edition of the Weimar Mercury states that “Lawrence and Leon Klesel and Fred Muras will have their grand opening for their Weimar Home Furnishers on Sept. 2, marking their move to a new location, east of Rubin's Grocery.” Since that time, they've continued to grow, driven by the same passion and commitment to quality and service.
Located at 210 West Main Street in Weimar, Weimar Home Furnishers offers a comprehensive range of products, from stunning furniture and cozy mattresses to versatile blinds and elegant window treatments. Their specialty is floor coverings—an area where they truly excel and lead the market.
In the words of Mike Klesel, “We sell furniture and bedding, and we also sell blinds, window treatment and floor covering. Floor covering is our biggest business. My brother-in-law, Danny, and I have worked here a long time, putting floors together. And of course, my sister, Nancy, worked here many years, too.”
Recently another family member joined the Weimar Home Furnishers crew. Mike’s wife, Dolly, retired from her career at
Perdue Foods in Schulenburg and found a new calling at the store. “Nancy wanted to retire from here, and so I came over to help out,” Dolly shared. “This is a whole new world for me. I was in the meat industry for over 30 years, so this is a completely different environment.”
Mike’s mother, Lillian, also retired from the store but she still keeps an eye on how her son and daughter-in-law are running things. “She always makes sure that the grass is green and asks if the sprinklers are working,” Dolly said with a smile. “And if it’s close to Christmastime, she wants to see the decorations. She still worries.”
“Yes, she always enjoyed putting up the Christmas decorations with my sister, but I wasn’t a big fan of it,” Mike added with a laugh. “I was the one dragging everything out and then dragging everything back up!”
Above, Dolly (Lebeda) and Mike Klesel of Weimar Home Furnishers.
"We appreciate our customers throughout the years because, without them, we wouldn’t be here.
And after the holiday décor is up, the whitetail mounts displayed around the showroom indicate how Mike and Dolly enjoy spending their free time away from the store. “I used to hunt several deer leases around Texas,” Mike shared. “But in the last five years, I guess we haven't had a lease … I’ve just been hunting behind my house in Dubina.”
“Mike used to go hunting in Wyoming every year with Nancy's husband, Andy,” Dolly added. "That was his big trip for over 26 years.”
“Yeah, I really enjoyed those trips,” Mike said. “It seemed like we would get back, put everything away, and then we were packing up to go again. The years were going by so quickly. And then our daughter, Kamie, was in sports in high school. I was missing some of her games and I decided her senior year that I wasn't going hunting in Wyoming.”
But trading his annual Wyoming hunting trip for family time didn’t stop Mike from bagging a big one right here at home. “I shot a really nice deer behind the house last year,” Mike said with a big grin. “Won first place in the Shiner Area Big Buck Contest for Fayette County. I watched him for two years and took pictures of him. I told Dolly that she needed to go hunt for him in the morning, but she liked to hunt in the evening. That buck was always behind the house every morning, but not in the evening. So I was the one that got him.”
In addition to hunting, Mike and Dolly love to bay fishing along the Texas coast, and Mike also raises cattle. But more than anything else, they love the community they’ve served for over half a century. ”We appreciate our customers throughout the years because, without them, we wouldn’t be here,” Mike said.
From top, the office walls proudly display memories of donations to area schools, churches and non-profits; mattresses and furniture are only a small part of what you'll find at Weimar Home Furnishers; they're known throughout the area to be experts at flooring.

Putting You on the ROAD AGAIN
Where Pizza Gets Personal
Welcome to Weimar, Texas
Unlike any other small community, Weimar is where ideas begin that set trends for other small cities.
Weimar’s picturesque downtown bustles with businesses, shops, great eateries, antique shops and a tavern where locals play dominoes and German card games.
Strategically located on Interstate 10 and US 90 between San Antonio, Austin, and Houston, this charming community of predominately German and Czech descendants offer a trading center to all.
Weimar is rich in history and culture as a farm and ranching community. Its family oriented festivals and community activities attract visitors, retirees and families who choose Weimar as their home.
