Soon other prominent Yoakum families began erecting homes on Coke Street, which became known as “Silk Stocking Row.“ Designed by local architect W. A. Fink, Orth’s home features characteristics of the Queen Anne and colonial revival styles. Farmer and merchant T. J. Fitch bought the home in 1917, and it remained in his family until 1973. HISTORIC YOAKUM
The History of Yoakum, Texas Yoakum boasts a rich heritage that covers a span of over 125 years. Mr. John May and wife, Mary Ann, came from Ireland across the vast American West to drive their stakes in Texas, near Brushy Creek. Mr. May obtained a league of land from the Coahuila and Mexican government in 1835. Tonkawa Indians lived in the region and raided farms in the area. The Tonkawas joined with the Mexican army in terrorizing settlers during the “Runaway Scrape” of the Texas Revolution. Despite all the hardships, the settlers held on to their dreams. The Mays’ land became a gathering place for many herds of cattle that congregated for the long cattle drive up the Chisholm Trial. Eventually, Yoakum became the “Hub City” thanks to the dreams of Uriah Lott. In 1884, while working in Corpus Christi, he was interested in building a railroad between San Antonio and Corpus Christi. Lott had no financial support, so he borrowed five dollars to obtain a charter to build the railroad from San Antonio to Aransas Pass. In July of 1887 the railroad to Houston reached halfway between Cuero and Hallettsville. The intention was to locate maintenance facilities in this area, but since they were unwilling to grant land, they lost the shop to Yoakum. The May family had granted Mr. Lott 200 acres of land for the railroad yard, shops and the right of the way for the Waco and Houston tracks. On July 28, 1887, the town of Yoakum was established. It was named in honor of a man who worked for Lott, B.F. Yoakum. Mr. Yoakum became known for laying the most lines of track by any individual and for the opening and development of Long Island. Lott built 600 miles of railroad with the main
line running from San Antonio to Houston, and another two lines from Yoakum to Waco and Yoakum to Corpus Christi. As a result of the railroad Yoakum was founded and the town’s population grew rapidly. Commerce continued in Yoakum when Mr. C.C. Welhausen built a tannery called Texas Tanning and Manufacturing (TexTan) that manufactured harnesses, saddles, bridles, billfolds and belts. As sales extended across the United States, Mexico and Canada, Tex Tan became a very large local employer and was eventually bought by Tandy Corporation. In its wake, other leather companies have sprung up in Yoakum. The international distribution of products and large number of companies have made Yoakum the “Leather Capital” of the Southwest. Founded as a railroad town in 1887, Yoakum would transform itself into a place where famous cattle drives would begin, where tomatoes would be the main cash crop, where leather and their by-products would sustain the City for years to come and where new opportunities would still emerge over 125 years later to make Yoakum the “Hub of South Central Texas”. Yoakum Community Hospital, Texas Department of Transportation, Circle Y Saddle Co., Hochheim Prairie Insurance, Eddy Packing Inc. (meat packing, largest private employer in the Golden Crescent Region), Yoakum Packing Co., (meat packing), Yoakum Independent School District, Enterprise Products Partners, Ranger Gates, and Advanced Drainage Systems have all added to the employment base in Yoakum.

CHISHOLM TRAIL MEMORIAL PARK - The Chisholm Trail Memorial Park, originally known as Palmer Park, is re-dedicated to the memory of the Old Trail Drivers of the Yoakum-Bovine, Texas area who passed this way, 1867 – 1887. In the years following the Civil War, Texas was completely devastated and bankrupt. The only thing they had of value were thousands of wild Longhorn cattle grazing in the plains of South Texas. A few stout hearted and brave individuals got the idea of collecting these cattle and driving them to a beef hungry market in the North, converting them into cash Texas so desperately needed. These cattle were known as “Texas Gold”, the economic savior of our state. Between the years 1865 and the late 1880’s, thousands of Longhorn were gathered in this area and launched up what was commonly known as the Chisholm Trail to various destinations. The park was dedicated and erected by The Century of Yoakum and the Texas Department of Transportation in 2003. CORNER OF HIGHWAY 77A AND WEST GONZALES STREET CENTENNIAL PARK - Located on West Grand Avenue in Yoakum, Centennial Park sits on land donated by the Stevens Family. After the erection of the flagpole to commemorate the US Bicentennial, the gazebo commemorating the Texas Sesquicentennial and the footbridge commemorating Yoakum’s Centennial, the park was re-named “Centennial Park”. During Christmas, the park is festively decorated with lights in all the trees. 1001 WEST GRAND AVENUE WILDFLOWERS - In the Yoakum area from March to May, there are highways and byways in which to enjoy the beautiful wildflowers of this area that include native bluebonnets, Indian blankets, primroses, buttercups, hollyhocks, and so many more. One such route includes a segment of Highway 77-A from Yoakum to Cuero that has been awarded the “Citation of Merit” from the White House for highway beauty. THROUGHOUT THE AREA

NOW SHOWING: A Dream Fulfilled DOWNTOWN GRAND THEATER WELCOMES PATRONS TO TAKE A VIEW BACK IN TIME Visiting a movie theater in their hometown is something that many take for granted. Others, however, know how lucky they are that they have somewhere like The Grand Theater Yoakum to enjoy a movie in. Tammy Steinmann is the proud owner of The Grand Theater and loves her job as much as she loves movies, which is a lot. She and her husband bought The Grand building from Believers Christian Center on November 22, 2015, but Tammy had had her eye on The Grand for 15 years prior. As soon as she saw that it was up for sale, she purchased it and in February 2016, Weaver and Jacobs Construction Company got to work. “I never went there growing up. It closed down in 1991. I don’t remember going there, but I just know teaching kids, they were always going to Victoria. And so keeping them in town and off the road and giving them something to do is what I really, really wanted to do.” “I just retired from teaching. I taught kids for 20 years and to me it’s so important for kids to have something to do and there was just nothing to do in Yoakum,” Tammy said. “So I wanted to give Yoakum kids, and the surrounding communities, something to do.” At that point it was just one theater and the lobby and in September 2016 they opened their doors. Continued on page 10.

Back when it first opened in 1922, there wasn’t any sound, just piano.
“When we first opened it up Labor Day weekend, we did two days that were just invitation only. We showed the original Top Gun and opened it up to past employees and it was a full house,” Tammy said. “We have some employees that even come up to this day and say ‘We used to work there!’ and it wasn’t digital, so it was reels, and they said that they would sit up there and change the reel out when it was ready to change out, so that’s pretty cool.”
there wasn’t any sound, just piano. The concession stand was much smaller, and had to be taken from the theater to make it bigger. And it was segregated.”
A couple of years later she realized that having one screen was tough because of the rules that she had to abide by the studios.
In the summertime, Tammy gets businesses to sponsor ten free movies for the community. “They sponsor those for me so that I do not have to charge anyone to enjoy those movies,” she said. “Every Christmas we do a free movie that is sponsored, too.” During the school season, she also works with the schools so that they do not have to pay to enjoy the theater.
“I bought the building next door and made it a smaller second screen,” she said. “And then right before the coronavirius pandemic in February we refurbished the balcony and opened that up. The theater now is a shell. It was in really bad shape when we got it. But behind theater one, we were able to salvage the sound boxes. Of course we had to cut them to fit the new, but those are the original sound boxes. Back when it first opened in 1922,
“And the only reason I knew it was segregated,” Tammy continued, “is because I had a customer come in and tell me that she never got to walk through the doors because she had to sit on the top floor. I am so glad that that is not the times now.”
“I love watching movies and my kids do too,” Tammy said. “My husband helps, he’s there to support me. He also has his own business. My two kids work there. They’re not on the schedule all the time, but they

know how to do everything.” “My daughter is a senior. She has a couple periods off so I make a list everyday and she comes up and does that,” she continued. “And then they work when I have employees that need off and they’ll step in and help me. They’re there when I need them for sure.” As for the future, Tammy is hopeful and teased about some exciting changes and expansions that are coming our way. “This is just something that I love. I really, really loved teaching and I felt like that was my calling, but I love this and I think I can serve more kids this way,” she shared. “And to leave teaching, something I did for twenty years … I really have a passion for customers and I love what I do. I’m there every day and I try to make it better every day. I love it.” The Grand Theater Yoakum is located at 212 West May Street in Yoakum and online at www.yoakumgrandtheater.com.

A LOT OF EVERYTHING
A Little of This and a Little of That THE MUDDY PIG CO. OFFERS GIFTS AND TREATS FOR EVERYONE There is a shop in the town of Yoakum that is worth a visit the next time you are in need of a gift or a little retail therapy.
“I was a partner in a shop called The Tin Shed from 2007-2018 and then closed that shop,” she continued.
The Muddy Pig Co. has just about anything that you can think of to put a smile on someone’s face: Funny yard signs, beautiful kitchen decor and towels, makeup erasers, farm animal paintings, gorgeous crosses, bracelets, turquoise jewelry, quirky snacks and more.
“In 2018 I lost my mom but also found out I was going to be having my second grandson and I got to keep him for nine months and when that was up, I needed something to do. And then in December of 2019, I reopened it in a different location as The Muddy Pig”
“It is a gift shop. We have a lot of gifts, a lot of everything and we do have some clothes!” said Naomi I. DeBord, owner of The Muddy Pig.
“When I needed a name for my business, we had just lost our potbelly pig. We would let her out every day out of the pen and she’d go across into the next pasture and someone shot her. I’m sure they thought it was a wild hog, but it wasn’t. So it was just kind of like a tribute to her, but a kitschy name.”
“I am the owner and I take care of everything,” she laughed.
Above, customers can shop The Muddy Pig Co. at 612 West Grand in Yoakum.

“She was a good pig. We loved her,” she added. That good little pig is paid tribute to throughout the shop as cute, pink pigs can be seen throughout. “All my life I’ve done crafty things. I’ve made jewelry and like to paint ... I don’t do as much jewelry and making things as I used to,” said Naomi, when talking about her inventory. “I have two grandsons and when I paint, they have to paint if they’re over,” she laughed. “It’s mainly bought stuff.”
As for the future, Naomi plans to stay open for as long as she is able to - all to bring a little piece of happiness to the people of Yoakum. “I hope we keep going and can provide a lot of stuff for customers,” she said. The Muddy Pig Co. is located at 612 West Grand and online at www.facebook.com/TheMuddyPigCo.
“I have family members that help me out and make it all work. We get a lot of business from people that just stop in while going through Yoakum, and locals, but we do have quite a few people that we’ve never met before that we meet.” “A lot of really nice people have stopped in over the years. For me, I like people and I just like that kind of work and The Muddy Pig just made sense. Throughout the year, they sponsor a baseball team, a little league team and donate to different organizations as well as participate in events with The Chamber of Commerce. Clockwise from top left, the welcoming front entrance of The Muddy Pig Co.; jams, jellies and kitchen items are always a popular gift for everyone on your list; specialty candies and a sweet treat for yourself or someone else.

ONE-OF-A-KIND TREASURES
From Historic to FABULOUS DENNIS KEITH TALKS OF HIS LOVE FOR ANTIQUES, HIS PATRONS AND YOAKUM If you’re looking for your next piece of period antique furniture or home decor, head on over to Yoakum’s own St. Regis Past & Present. “St. Regis Past & Present of Yoakum is a fabulous shopping adventure, featuring hundreds of antiques,” said Dennis Keith Kaiser, Owner and Proprietor. “I was born and raised in Yoakum from 1963 and I am an architect for Houston in the design field. I have conducted business all over the world,” said Dennis. “I am not only the owner, but also the proprietor in Yoakum.” Dennis, along with his parents Barbara Ann and Robert Lee Kaiser purchased the building in 2005 as the Historical St. Regis Hotel. “The building was built in 1915. It’s a porcelain brick, designed and built out of St. Louis, Missouri investors in the Edwardian style, somewhat centered by classic vernacular design and Edwardian architecture. It served as a major gathering place for Texans and abroad from 1915-1957, housing 46 guest rooms with a separate restaurant and gambling facilities, built for the railroad, designed by a Yoakum Architect, J. Henry Yentzen commissioned for developer S.A. Carnes and Son in 1913 ... for use of the demographics for passengers coming in on the San AntonioAransas Pass Railroad,” he added. “Yoakum was in need of a downtown retail center,” he said. “I went ahead and bought the building for future use of retail which evolved into a design center for South Texas, creating a marketplace for designers for San Antonio, Austin and Houston. We have been in business for ten years and this is our anniversary!” he said, excitedly.

We are off the beaten track but we welcome all visitors from all over the world.
Kaiser ensures that there is still a piece of the past in his establishment. “We have historical photos of the building and Lobby, the original proprietor’s wedding register, the original menu that was presented in the restaurant in 1920,” he shared. “We are off the beaten track but we welcome all visitors from all over the world,” Dennis said. “We sell to Canada, we sell to Mexico, we sell to Europe. We are available online and also for possible shipping. We specialize in fine furnishings and housewares from the pre-Civil War era up to the mid-Century modern era, which would be about 1860 to about 1975. We support historic examples in South Texas.” “If anyone would want to have specialized examples of Victorian, Edwardian, art deco, Industrial through the mid-century, we are your main supply house to shop out of the city!”
And when it comes to supporting the community and emerging artists and designers, St. Regis Past & Present certainly does their fair share. “The Kaiser family owns the business and we support local and non-profit organizations,” Dennis said. “We give constantly. Donations, fundraising events, etc. We donate through the fire department, through the City of Yoakum, through the Chamber of Commerce, through animal rescue and we also support local children organizations.” “We have been a major gathering place for entertainment in South Texas,” he added. “We have supported museums, local district and county groups for historic preservation and we look forward to our continued efforts in the South Texas Communities.” St. Regist Past & Present is located at 612 Lott Street.

YOAKUM HOT SPOT
Come for the Chicken, Stay for Community RUSTY ROOSTER SERVES UP MORE THAN THEIR FAMOUS FRIED CHICKEN IN YOAKUM The Rusty Rooster is a popular spot amongst Yoakum locals, but this chicken joint has spread its wings for a bigger purpose and cause. Jonathan Morales, part of the ownership group with Rusty Rooster, and Carlos De La Cruz, General Manager, shared with me what it’s like to work for a company that goes beyond making delicious food. “It all goes back to my personal grandfather, Manuel Rangel,” said Jonathan. “He was managing Golden Fried Chickens here locally around our area in about the 80s or 90s. It was a good chicken chain back in the day.” “Ultimately, my family went ahead and opened Rusty Rooster in December of 1998. Our first location was in Luling and then we went to Yoakum in 2000. My uncle, Pete Palacios, helped us get that store up and running,” he said.
“My grandfather was involved in the chicken business a long time. My father was in construction, my mother worked for the Jackson District Attorney’s Office, so when they opened Rusty’s in ‘98, it was more to help my grandfather.” “Shortly after that, he dealt with dialysis and it was really something to keep him going,” Jonathan continued. “He ended up passing away in 2006, but it helped my grandfather live so much longer because he worked in the restaurants. Our uncle Pete passed away the following year, but we still carry on their hard work today.” “When you work in the restaurant business, or any kind of business, you deal with troubles,” said Jonathan. “You deal with people’s stuff, and stress but more than anything we keep a smile and a good attitude. We’re leadership and people are watching. The way we present ourselves definitely helps the staff fall in line. We definitely set the tone on their attitude, their work ethic and just the culture of the place.”

“My parents are ministers and together they have pastored a church in Luling since 2015,” he said. “So our employees, we try to treat them really good. We often do Christmas bonuses. We always try to take care of them. More than anything, we try to impact them and give them a good work environment.” “A good work environment, with a healthy family orientation, especially there in Yoakum,” he continued. “That group there is so tight. Our employees there would do anything for each other. I definitely love the culture that we’ve created there. I think it’s something that’s unique and different, it’s not just working at some fast food place. It’s more than that.” “Carlos is our head honcho, general manager,” Jonathan said. “He oversees the stores.” “I’ve been with them for about seventeen years,” shared Carlos. “It was my first job in high school and while I’ve had other jobs here and there, I’ve stayed with them due to the way I was treated and the way they always have taken care of me.” “They make me feel like not just an employee, but an actual part of the family,” he continued. “They have treated me right and they have taken care of me. I started washing dishes and ended up being the General Manager of the restaurant!” “As a young kid, I wasn’t a person that would just go and speak to somebody,” he said. “Working at Rusty Rooster has definitely changed that to the point where I have regular customers that go to Rusty Rooster in Yoakum and see me and tell me how much they like to come to me, to the restaurant, because we always take care of them. I have seen a lot of those young kids grow up to be young adults and they come in and still get pretty much the same thing and it’s pretty crazy,” he laughed. “It’s nice to see that. It’s nice to have met those customers and be part of serving them their meal to get them through their everyday work or whatever it is they have to go through,” he added. “The staff in Yoakum has always been really close together,” said Carlos. “We have had so many people working there. Everyone that has worked there has been treated like family and has treated each other like family. Just like everyone has their everyday problems or tragedies that happen in their life, they have always been there to support each other. People that sometimes you would think ‘I would have never spoken to that person if it wasn’t for this job!’” “I remember one day I went into work and I was really, really sick,” he said. “Jonathan’s dad went in there and noticed I wasn’t doing well and he said ‘Come on, lets pray.’ And me being the son of a minister myself, I know prayer is the answer. He was able to pray for me and was able to give me some words of hope that helped me get through my day and before I knew it, I was okay. It’s nice to have that available to me where some jobs it’s not. If you need prayer, you can always pray for yourself but it’s always better when you have someone pray for you and with you.” Continued on page 22.

“I remember one time in particular we had a homeless individual walk into one of our restaurants, completely distressed, and they wanted something to eat,” Jonathan shared. “I was able to fix her a meal and I was able to pray for her. As I prayed for her, she started crying and said that no one had ever cared for her like that or treated her like that. I thought that was very special. I wasn’t just selling her chicken, I was giving her hope…hope that things were turning around in her life.” “I thought it was awesome,” he continued. “Being able to help her not only with food, but help her spiritually and give her hope. I feel like that’s the bigger picture that sets us apart. We have an ownership group and a management group that gives hope.” And when it comes to giving back to the community that they love, The Rusty Rooster goes well beyond the town of Yoakum. “A lot of the giving back to the community happens here in Luling. When they go to Rusty Rooster in Yoakum, Gonzales, Seguin, Luling they don’t understand that the proceeds that come in and out of there, they help a bigger ministry,” said Jonathan.
“My parents are ministers, they don’t have to take a dime from the church itself so every fund that comes to the church is funneled back out to the community.” “Right now we are feeding over 250 people a week in Luling just on Tuesdays through community meals. We partnered with the county food bank every Tuesday to make sure everybody in Luling has a meal and a place to go.” “We also go to Austin under the bridge every fourth Sunday of the month and we serve them a meal and give them hygiene bags. By people buying chicken in Yoakum, they don’t understand that it impacts what we are able to do in Austin under the bridge because the money and the profits that come in there ultimately help more than anything because it helps the church do more for the community. There’s a lot of things that people don’t realize, we are not like anybody else.” “Not all of our employees go to church and that’s okay,” he added. “We don’t push that on them but we just want them to know that if they ever need anything that we can help them.”

“Rusty Rooster as a whole we’ve dedicated that Sunday is for family, Sunday is for God. That will never change,” he continued. “We used to be open seven days a week and my dad was constantly being called out,” said Jonathan. “We’d be in the middle of church service and people would be calling because they couldn’t find their shoes, goofy stuff like that. Eventually it came to a point where they said, ‘You know what? We’re just gonna close on Sundays because that’s God’s. We’re just gonna close on Sundays.’” “The first week, we saw a big drop off working those six days versus the seven. And then slowly, but surely over the next couple of weeks we were doing what we did in seven days in six. And today, we do more sales in six days than we used to in seven and that’s a testimony that God has supplied our needs because we honored him.” The Rusty Rooster in Yoakum is located at 604 US Highway 77-A South and online at rustyroostertx.com. You can also visit them in Gonzales, Seguin and Luling.

wanting to do for many years and finally got to do the business. I wanted to have a small shop to trade and sell guns, so it was either make an office inside our farm building in the country or remodel this building, which I did.”
“Hub City Hunting and Guns is located in the 1929 Historic Building that originally housed the first Model A Dealer in Yoakum, Hub City Motor Co., owned by J.H. “King” Landry. He was my wife’s father,” said Dudley Lampley, owner and a gunsmith. “Since we are using her father’s building, I thought it would be nice to honor and remember him.”
“My wife, Lisa, who is my best friend and the girl I went to school with, handles all the non-ATF books for me. We make a good team. She keeps me on my toes!” Dudley said. “I have a very helpful wife and I could not do it without her.”
“We opened the doors for business in October 2019, after two long years of remodel and bringing the space up to city code. This was something that I have been
“We both work full time jobs in Victoria in addition to running the shop. That is why my shop is currently only open Tuesday through Friday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” he said. And for Dudley, it is the love of the

industry and helping people that keeps him going. He values the relationships he has developed with his customers through the years and aims to please, no matter the target. “I love seeing different customers and having different conversations,” he said. “Seeing where all the people come from. The different backgrounds that they have and the stories that they have to tell.” “I may not remember your name,” he said, “but I will remember what gun you bought and what ammo you need. When you walk in, I can guarantee you will see a smiling face from me!” “We have customers from all overespecially in the 100-mile radius,” he continued. “We certainly have our regulars

we see weekly, who are just curious to see what is new. They also like getting out of the house!” he laughed. “Talking with the customers and seeing how they are doing is very satisfying to me too,” Dudley added. “Helping them with their decision on what their needs are and what they like. I can order ammunition from many sources and usually carry hard to find kinds. I like going above and beyond to help them.” “You will be welcome when you come in,” he emphasized. “We will ask you what you are looking for such as firearms and ammo and can special order guns, ammo, optics, fishing supplies and hunting accessories.” “I usually go over the gun with everybody whenever they’re buying it,” he added. “How to use it, how to hold it, how to rack it and take the mag out, put the mag in, the safety, etc.” He also offers repair and cleaning services for those interested. And when it comes to giving back, Hub City Hunting and Guns has their fair share of organizations that they contribute to. “Mostly, our involvement is through firearms donations to charity raffles or firearms & ammunition donations to organizations like the Volunteer Fire Dept, FFA, Booster Clubs, and other Fundraisers,” he said. “We also give discounts to Military, Police, Firefighters and Teachers and Senior Citizens. Most recently we donated all the shotgun shells for the 52nd Annual Cardinal Booster Club Turkey Shoot at Wied Hall benefitting the Shiner Catholic School.” As for the future, Dudley hopes to retire in a few years from his job at Detar Hospital and plans on devoting his time to the shop and to his ranch. “We like talkin’ to people. We like people comin’ in,” Dudley said. “I got plenty of guns and ammos in stock!” Hub City Hunting and Guns is located at 606 Lott Street and online at hubcityhuntingandgun.com.
