Amongst a city of skyscrapers, the proposed Dubai Central Library provides cultural character that is rare in the tourist-oriented city. Located in the business district of one of the WorldÃĸ€™s largest cities, the library acts as a beacon, drawing in members of the community and introducing them to an environment that contributes to the civic identity of a foreign culture and place.

The strategy of the project was to divide the building into two parts, separating the major programs: the auditorium and the library. To bridge the two programs a covered courtyard is introduced, providing a social platform for the public. Inside the main program, a central atrium allows natural light to flood the public library stacks, creating circulation around the delicate glass structure. The main literary collection is located on level 2 and as the user ascends, the program becomes more specific. Meeting rooms, study rooms, and work tables surround the perimeter allowing for desired views into the atrium. This project provides relief from the consumerism typically found in Dubai by creating a social environment that celebrates traditional architecture while fostering education and research.

The design of the library takes inspiration from various traditional components of Dubai architecture. The elevation was designed to mimic an open book and the decision to raise one end of the mass was derived from the original Arabic Library: introducing a spire to act as a visual focal point. Located at the base of the WorldÃĸ€™s tallest building, this focal point is necessary to encourage traffic through the site. Screens also feature traditional Dubai architecture, utilizing the 3 essential shapes in the construction of a minaret: the circle, the square, and the hexagon. These screens provide a cultural aspect to the building, while working congruently as a passive cooling system.

This project, designed individually after the completion of the master plan, focuses on the high-rise condo and concept of integration between the built form and the site. The project explores the idea of bringing green space to residential areas by incorporating green terraces in the high-rise condo. The organic terraces create a seamless transition from built form to nature. The form, reflecting the concept of the site, begins with orthogonal lines and transitions from figure to fabric integrating the natural form into the building.

To encourage use of the green spaces provided, pedestrian pathways are introduced. These pathways allow for access through the site from both the x and y-axis. A large social platform is introduced at the base of the condo in the form of a public plaza. The project emphasizes the integration of nature and residential living while encouraging social activity amongst green areas.

Typology

Working in pairs, the project scope was to design a multi-unit residential building in an urban context of Old Ottawa East. After a 2-week site and neighbourhood analysis, an overall site strategy was developed accommodating the diverse range of typologies, lifestyles, and income found in the area. Both mixeduse dwellings targeting families and a high-rise condo targeting young professionals were developed. Our focus quickly became the revival of existing green spaces into socially active spaces. A master plan that transitions from fabric to figure as you enter the site allows for the integration of the buildings into the existing urban form.

The multipurpose courtyard transitions throughout the year based on season. During the winter months it is utilized as a public skating rink and in the warmer months it is used for a variety of outdoor activities from a farmers market, to a platform for public forms. Built in benches allow for seating, providing an ideal lunch spot. These benches transition into stalls that are used for the farmers market

While London is a large city it lacks accessible green space . The intentions of the project are to incorporate the landscape and architecture in a fluid design to provide a space for the public. The site sits on a quiet street located in a densely populated area of London, making it an ideal location for a community centre. Focusing on architecture as a participant in a larger urban network, the project examines urban ideas and theories through the design of buildings. The design focuses on the relationship between the urban fabric and the building, encouraging public use. By submerging the majority of the program below grade, a large platform is accessible. A ramp provides a playful pathway from street level to the green space above, creating a series of elevated public spaces. From here the ramp allows access to a boardwalk along the basin, encouraging pedestrian traffic along a previously under utilized space. Integration of the ramp into the structure of the building strengthens the relationship between the built form and nature.

Located on a north/south basin connecting the RegentÃĸ€™s Canal to City Road Basin, more private and exclusive water access is provided. ALMONTE. Studio 4 // October 2012-December 2012 Almonte, Canada AutoCAD Photoshop Illustrator Rhino

The project brief was to design a research centre that functions congruently with Carleton University, in the small town of Almonte, located just outside of Ottawa. A cognitive research centre, a masterÃĸ€™s program new to Carleton at the time, was proposed that enhances integration of the community in the new field of research. It was important to the citizens of Almonte to create a modest building that did not overpower the existing architecture of the town. With the site located directly behind the historical town hall, the new research facility integrates itself into the existing urban form of Almonte. With this in mind, the strategy of the project was to create a new social hub for the community and to stimulate public interest. To encourage interaction, a large public plaza bridges the gap between the town hall and the research facility, providing an ideal space for a town to host public forums and town meetings. The program of the building becomes more private as you ascend. The main level is fully accessible to the public, with an auditorium and a public library. The second floor is dedicated to cognitive science research, providing laboratories and workspaces for university students and professors. The third floor provides living accommodations for the researchers. Crystalline structures project through all three floors, allowing for light to enter the building. These structures allow for sightlines to each level regardless of where you are located. The intention of the project is to integrate the community into the research facility, creating a sense of involvement between the public and the University.

The design of the building is inspired by the motion of brain waves. The first floor is designed with a unique plan, composed of angular shapes and walls, creating intimate spaces for the public to immerse itself in. The remaining two floors provide contrast to the angular notion of the main level by introducing a simple curtain wall system. This system appears to be elevated off the ground, and is wrapped in a ribbon of wooden slats that is inspired by the ceiling structure in the town hall. The arrangement of the ribbon alludes to the angular motion found in the plan of the first floor. The motion is further enforced by the introduction of angular mullions in the curtain wall system.

Studio 4 // September 2012 Almonte, Canada

The faculty proposed a design build project to create a piece of furniture to improve the work environment in the studio space. The piece was to address the need for increased space, better organization and enhanced collaboration. Given the task of creating a more effective organizational system, my teammates and I created a small locker based off of the idea of a SOMA puzzle.

SOMA CUBE PIECES

The locker is CNC manufactured, to assist with reduced material costs. It also ensures each piece to be cut with precise 1 inch finger joints. The precision of these joints allows for the locker to be held together simply by friction Ãĸ€“ no glue, no screws.

The locker is composed of a parametric combination of cubes that serve as storage units for drafting and modeling supplies. These combinations of cubes, like the SOMA puzzle, fit together to create a larger cube. The intention is for this larger cube to be used as a work surface, or to be wheeled under a drafting table to maximize space. The locker can be used in a variety of ways: 1. as a storage unit 2. as a work station 3. as a presentation platform

Over the past year I have worked on a variety of projects, some in a professional setting, some for personal pleasure. Working for Kearns Mancini Architects in Toronto, Ontario, I have gained a breadth of knowledge and experience in professional architecture. The following is a collection of the projects I have assisted with, some completed individually, some completed in collaboration with coworkers. DELOITTE. // September 2014-Present Toronto, Canada [Collaboration] AutoCAD Revit

One of the more notable projects I have been involved with is the new Toronto headquarters for Deloitte in the Bay Adelaide Centre III. The scope of the project is a full interior fit-out of 19 floors, including podium levels. My first interaction with the project was through the production of the RFP. Once we had won the contract, I joined the project team on document development. Working alongside 4 other individuals, I have assisted with the production of tender packages, sample boards and LEED qualification. The project is currently in construction documentation phase and expected to be completed in 2016.
