GWENIVERE SNYDER: AN ADVOCATE FOR EMPOWERING WOMEN

Born and raised in Colorado, Gwenivere Snyder has always had a love for nature, beauty and the importance of home. She was able to live in Europe and travel the world early in life where she experienced a variety of people, cultures and styles. When we met up with Gwenivere we were so touched with all the non-profits she serves, we invited her to be featured in our Holiday issue of NoCo magazine. NoCo: Tell us where you are from originally and a bit about your family. Gwenivere: I am a colorado native. I am from Louisville. I have 3 kids: the 19 year old is in college, the twins are 15, and my husband is an exeuctive producer of his own company based in LA and Chicago. NoCo: What was it that lead you to real estate? Gwenivere: I lead a weekly meeting of a group of women who were all in entertainment. One of the women who had just sold her sound business encouraged me to do it and thought I would be great. I started at Sotheby’s on Rodeo Drive and had 2 luxury clients within 3 months of receiving my license.

FEATURE

I love to see the success of other women .

NoCo: We know that you are a huge advocate for empowering women, how were you able to transform a women in need? Gwenivere: I love to see the success of other women. Building up women, all women and empowering them through lifting each other up, being available for coffee, a contact, help with money, an introduction, whatever the specific need is. Just to be available and believe in each other knowing that there is enough room for everyone to have a chance at success and accomplishment and each of us can help be a part of that. NoCo: Tell us one thing that no one knows about you. Gwenivere: I am pretty much an open book but trust is built one day at a time and I have developed a lot of wisdom and discernment over the years!

NoCo: What’s your favorite part of being a realtor? Gwenivere: My favorite part is the getting to know your clients, building that relationship and being friends. Having people share their lives with you is a huge privilege. NoCo: What are some of the charities and non-profits you help? Gwenivere: I’m president of the women’s guild at A Precious Child and a chairperson forColorado Uplift. I also support the Alzheimers foundation, Erie Uplink, Harvest of Hope and Urban Youth Ministries. It is unbelievably rewarding to give back and be of service to others. My children also are involved on the Youth Advisory Board and volunteering.

“All the Worl ’s a Stage”... So Is Your Home When

Shakespeare was right about life’s staging! The holidays are a wonderful time of year. Snow is falling, decorations are up everywhere and time with family and friends is abundant and precious. Most think this is not the time to sell and buy a home. However, let’s go over a few of those misconceptions about this particular time of year. Let’s start staging your beautiful home for sale! The majority of people have this school of thought, therefor there are fewer homes on the market, which means less with which too compete. While this may also result in fewer buyers in the market, they will be serious and not a bunch of “lookie loos”, not wasting your time with hour showings that have no potential for an offer.

Sel

Your home is typically in its best shape and presentation. You have all your decorations up with your well-planned holiday décor. You have touched up and cleaned up for the family and friends that will be visiting. When preparing your home for sale, you should declutter, removing anything not necessary. With some tasteful decorating, your potential buyers can imagine being in the home during next year’s festivities with their own family and gatherings. Pulling on the emotional strings is a very effective tactic. Making sure floors are cleaned or replaced and paint is new or touched up is a must. Normally, most of this is done anyway for this time of year, putting your shiniest, best foot forward when hitting the market.

lling! By Jason Grentz

Some think that showings will be difficult during the holidays. While you want to make your home available as much as possible. It is very simple to have your Real Estate Agent block off certain days or times. You get notification of any showing requests and can always deny them, just offer a different availability to work with the potential buyers. Bottom line - you can’t time the market. When the time is right for you is the right time to make a move. Get a professional, experienced and trusted Realtor to help you through the process. Engage them early and have them "walk" your home, so they can help you decide what changes and repairs you need to make. Get everything done up front as your home will sell much faster and for a higher price when you hit the

market 100% ready to go. Consider additional services such as home staging or even getting a home warranty to pass along to the new owners. If you don’t have a trusted Realtor, please feel free to contact me. I’m happy to discuss your situation and the market and offer a free consultation. I have lived in Colorado my entire life, and I am very connected to what is happening. Put my knowledge and experience to work for you! Your neighbor Realtor. The real VALUE of a professional paint job is the painter. Even with the most expensive primer and paint, EXPERIENCE is still the most important factor. With experience there is DETAIL. Good results are in the details of the job, how it’s performed, and the types of products used.

RESPECTING YOUR “ELDER” BERRIES By Sheila Liewald L.Ac. Sheila Liewald, L.Ac., is a licensed acupuncturist, board certified Chinese herbalist and certified biopuncturist. She’s called Colorado her home for the past 15 years and has been an integrative medical practitioner for 10 years. Her practice, Red Aspen Wellness, has an herbal apothecary with over 200 herbs. She also works as staff acupuncturist at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lafayette, Colorado.

While I don’t consider myself a competitive person for some reason every year when flu season hits, I treat whether I can “win” by not getting it like it’s a competition. Around the end of each September I gear up for combat as if the flu is this entity and I’m going to battle and score is kept. That said, I am all about not getting it and pretty hell bent on avoiding it naturally. Likely one of my favorite effective defensive mechanisms is elderberry syrup. I prescribe it liberally for patients for a variety of things from head-colds, chest colds, sinus issues, or the flu. It can be used while sick to shorten the duration and severity or it can be

used preventatively through the whole season. What is it? Also called Sambucus, it’s a large shrub most people would be inclined to call a tree because it can get up to 30 feet high. There are many kinds and some are native to North America and Europe. Native Americans have been eating and using the berries medicinally for centuries. It’s a hardy plant that can grow fairly easily across Europe and the US and Canada. They also attract and support butterflies! Medicinal effects Elderberry is antiviral which >>>

makes it off the cuff a good defense against the flu. The 2017 flu strains were shown particularity weakened by the berry. One study showed 93% of those who took elderberry got better from the flu in 2 days or less as opposed to the placebo group which took 6 days to get better. The berry contains a protein that inhibits the virus from being able to break your cell walls, AKA infecting you. (see it really is a battle). Many other viral infections may benefit from this such as the herpes virus. It’s also an antioxidant and high in vitamins C, A, B and contains zinc. In fact, elderberries pack in a huge amount of vitamin C- about 60% or your daily intake! They are also high in fiber, as well as phenolic acid. Phenolic acid helps reduce oxidative stress. The compounds found in elderberries can decrease mucus in the sinuses. They also benefit the eyes for conjunctivitis. Where do I get this magic berry? Any health food store will carry it! I prefer the syrup you take with a spoon and find it to be the most effective. It’s not cheap but nor is getting the flu. You can also easily boil

and strain it yourself if you have access to the berries. Most health food stores stock immune boosting teas that contain elderberry. Traditional Medicinals makes a good tea that combines elderberry and echinacea which is another powerful immune booster and sickbug buster. Yogi makes perhaps one of my personal favorites called “Immune Support” which combines elderberry with other fruits but with the addition of Holy Basil which is another very effective agent for immunity by reducing inflammation but also combats stress, adrenal fatigue, aging, and anxiety. Elderberry is also found as a wine. Cheers too that! Sheila Liewald L.Ac. Dip.O.M. is the owner of Red Aspen Wellness in Boulder Colorado where she’s the acupunctrust and herbalist. She also serves as the acupuncturist at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lafayette. She’s currently obtainng her doctorate in acupuncture and Chinese medicine. MOVING TOWARDS HEALTH

M by Garth Reynolds

Health is a process, not a destination. There are many factors that move us either towards health or conversely toward discomfort and disease. Many of them we may be unaware of or otherwise misinformed. This is not completely our fault. The society and culture in which we live today falls short of being conducive for vibrant health. It is unfortunate how little education and sometimes false information, we receive on this subject. This stems from not only parents and teachers, but also from authority figures, the media and our culture at large. Nevertheless, we can empower ourselves and our community to proactively engage in promoting our health. My goal in this article is to scratch the surface on some key elements of cultivating health. Some are obvious. Some are common sense but not common practice. Additionally, others may be intuitive but under-appreciated concerning just how profound an impact it may have. To begin, what we think, what we tell ourselves, what

we believe and what we perceive, all profoundly impact our health, even on a moment-to-moment basis. The stress response literally turns off our body’s self-healing mechanism. The average person has 50 stress responses a day, up to 100 with high stress. Over time this greatly erodes our health. So what can we do? Become aware of repeated thought patterns especially negative self-talk. Embrace an “abundance mindset”. Live with an attitude of gratitude, abundance and empowerment. Let go of the illusion of control and knowing - go with the flow. Learn to reduce the body’s stress through exhaling and relaxing. Much of what we have been told about food and nutrition is wrong. The advice of plentiful grains >>>

and carbohydrates with only sparing fat has led to an epidemic of obesity, metabolic syndrome, as well as type-2 diabetes. We were told that all calories are created equal and are just energy to be balanced with exercise. Our food supply is full of additives, hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, GMO or genetically modified organisms, artificial sweeteners, MSG or monosodium glutamate and high fructose corn syrup. So what else can we do? Balance the proportion of carbohydrates, proteins and fat. Get plenty of clean fat from avocados, nut butter, olive oil and coconut oil. Shop in the organic produce section and eat plenty of leafy greens. Focus on foods that are phytonutrient rich and nutrient dense. Eat “cleanly-sourced” meat. Add fermented foods to help with digestion. Much of our environment is detrimental to our posture and movement. It’s causes stiffness, loss of mobility and pain. Extended periods of sitting has been shown to be just as harmful to health as cigarette smoking. If you look at our office chairs, our couches, and our car seats, they all put us into a slouched position that weakens our core, hunches our back and strains our neck. So, again-what can we do? If you have to sit for extended times, get up frequently and move. Adjust your ergonomics or your posture and position, so that you can engage your core with your back straight. Spend less time slouched in your couch or reading in your bed with bad posture. Establish a morning routine of corrective exercise to counteract the effects of our furniture. Fatigue, foggy thinking, unable to focus, headaches, excessive hunger and cravings, these could all be symptoms of dehydration. Coffee and alcoholic beverages, our common morning and evening drinks are all diuretics. This means they leech fluid from our system. Next to air, water is the most important thing for our body. It is common to suffer symptoms of dehydration and not realize it, especially in high altitude arid climates. What do we do? Drink filtered water first thing in the morning to hydrate. Time drinking hydrating, natural beverages between meals. Be sure to replenish the water lost from diuretics such as coffee and alcohol. Eat an early dinner and time your last hydration, so you can use the bathroom before you go to sleep. It is common knowledge that sleep is important to our health. This is when the body does its important work of detoxing and rebuilding. Poor sleep continuously degrades our body affecting all aspects of health. So, finally, what do we do? Avoid overstimulation before going to sleep. This includes bright lights and screens. The brain registers this as sunlight and will keep you awake. Avoid big meals before bed. Heavy digestion shuts down the body’s capacity to detoxify and heal during sleep. Keep a journal next to your bed. If you have “monkey mind” keeping you up, write down your thoughts so your brain can let it go. Exercise! A tired body is more likely to sleep. By becoming aware of these simple yet profound practices to cultivate health, we will be moving away from discomfort and towards vitality and vibrant living! MAINTAIN WITH NO GAIN THROUGHOUT THE HOLIDAYS by Shelby Stratton

Halloween just happened and there sits ALL those sweets calling your name around the house, office, kitchen and sock drawers where the kids try to hide them, OR let’s be honest, where we hide the BEST of the kids’ candy after we steal it. Regardless, Halloween usually starts the downhill spiral of the Holiday weight gain for many Americans! Let’s CHANGE that this year and take 6 steps to combat that extra 5lbs or of average American weight gain.* Keep up your workout routine It’s easy to skip workouts when times get busy. This is the time we need to buckle down and keep up our workouts. Wake up earlier before work and try some workout classes to start your morning. Leave those Holiday parties at a reasonable time, so you can wake up and stick with your routine. If you miss a day of workout due to a Holiday gathering, then make time that day to go on a walk or do a quick workout to get moving like 10 reps of each 5 rounds: squats, alternating lunges, push-ups, sit-ups and burpees this workout can be anywhere to increase your heart rate, build strength and just get moving! Stay hydrated We need to drink 1/2 our body weight in ounces/day of water, to keep the math easy, someone who weighs 100lbs, needs to drink 50oz of water a day. This is

HEALTH & FITNESS just to maintain. If you workout, a few extra glasses is helpful to keep up hydration. Soft drinks, beer, wine and/or coffee don’t count as part of this hydration, sorry! I like to add lemon, limes or cucumbers to my water to help add flavor. Lemon is a natural electrolyte too, so, there’s your bonus! Snack smartly Before heading to a Holiday party or dinner, you should have a healthy protein-packed snack. With eating more protein, you will be more satisfied, and it will help fuel and sustain your body more than carbs. Here are some go-to protein snacks that are all easy to keep with you at all times: • Purium MVP Chocolate Shake packed with 32 grams of protein from peas, pumpkin, and brown rice. MVP Sport supports muscle-building recovery without the calories.

muscle-building recovery without the calories. Digestive enzymes and probiotics allow for easy digestion. This organic blend includes herbs such as Turmeric, and Maca and Chaga Mushrooms, which target joints for extra recovery support.** •

RX Bars made of few ingredients that include, almonds, dates, and usually fruit. • Apple and almond butter are simple and easy. • Cashews or Almonds. Try these simple snack ideas that are easy and convenient to have in your car, bag, or purse. Have a snack like these whenever you feel like your blood sugar is dropping or snack before heading to the gathering, then you won’t feel like you have to over indulge. Choose the Holiday treats wisely This time of year comes around ONCE a year, choose your treats wisely! Don’t eat the white bread, brownies, chocolate chip cookies, etc. that you can

have other times of the year. Rather choose the special treats that only happen during these Holidays. Like PUMPKIN PIE or Granny’s Fudge!!!!!! Don’t waste those extra calories on food you can have any day of the year! Give Yourself Grace! Try and not over indulge every day of the week during the holiday season. If you want to pick one day a week or two, maybe the weekend since that is when most of the gatherings occur, this way you can stay somewhat accountable throughout the week. BUT if this doesn’t happen, then give yourself some GRACE! Every day we have the choice to start fresh, pick back up with your workout routine or choose healthy choices. Don’t beat yourself up, but rather, know you can start over the next day! BREATHE!!! This time of year can be taxing on us emotionally in many ways. Whether we have lost a family member, spending extended periods of time with family, coming up with the money to buy gifts, or getting those end-of-year deadlines, can create stress for us! SO we have this free tool we can use which is our BREATH! “Scientific research is showing that mindful breathing—paying attention to your breath and learning how to manipulate it—is one of the most effective ways to lower everyday stress levels and improve a variety of health factors ranging from mood to metabolism.”*** Now CHEERS to this wonderful Holiday Season, may it be blessed with family, friends, and good times! 5 TIPS TO A BETTER HOLIDAY SEASON by Kathryn Hughey LPCC The Holidays bring up myriad emotions: Joy, peace, contentment and even grief, loneliness, sadness and intense anxiety (or all of them at once). As a transplant in Colorado, I experience the pang of homesickness. Going ‘home” for the holidays is not an option, so the Holidays are spent with just the four of us. For someone used to big family functions, I have, in the past found myself incredibly homesick and disconnected, missing the magic of the holiday season and desperately trying to find it. Fortunately, I have found some great ways to alleviate the homesickness and feel more connected to my community, as I dare you to try some of them! 1. Give Your Time! We are fortunate to have a ton of social service agencies and churches that help the less fortunate in the community: Get involved! Find a soup kitchen or other nonprofit organization that you can volunteer some of your time. Bonus points: find one where your kids can help too! 2. Get Connected! Here in Northern Colorado, we have a high percentage of transplants. Throw a party or find some community events that you can attend. If there are no neighborhood or community events, start one! With the advent of apps like NextDoor we are now, more than ever (for better or worse), connected to our neighbors. It takes some courage to put yourself out there, but DO IT ANYWAY! 3. Give Yourself Permission: Don’t schedule a packed holiday break; give yourself permission to NOT entertain your kids every second. If the thought of seeing your family this holiday season brings you to tears and panic, don’t go! Really! Give yourself permission to not go. You may thank yourself later. If that is absolutely not an option, put boundaries in place: Only stay for 2 hours, not the whole weekend. If you find yourself in a toxic situation: LEAVE! Give yourself permission to do what is best for you. 4. Create New Traditions: This is my favorite! We are so fortunate to live in a place with a ton of opportunities from ballets, to concerts, even parades. Be creative and think outside the box. If you have kids, ask them for ideas! 5. Give Yourself A Break: You may be grieving over the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job, sickness, etc. It’s okay to be sad. It is okay to grieve or be angry. This is not a “fake it ‘til you make it” time. Allow yourself to be sad and upset. Allow yourself to recognize that and feel it. If you need to: seek counseling. You don’t have to walk through it alone. There are many amazing counselors all over the Front Range ready to get you scheduled. I wish you a Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! Be courageous and strong, and try some of these tips out! You might be surprised to find you had the best holiday season yet!

YOU MAY BE GRIEVING OVER THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE, THE LOSS OF A JOB, SICKNESS, ETC. IT’S OKAY TO BE SAD. IT IS OKAY TO GRIEVE OR BE ANGRY.
