AB OUT ME a 21 year old illustrator/animator/graphic designer/ writer from Bacolod City, Philippines with a great passion for art, design, and all things illustrated and animated. In my time as an editor in The Spectrum, I have honed my skills in design, and as an animation student, I was given the opportunity to train myself in video editing, sound design, and the animation process as well. In all my works and projects, I always make it a point to be versatile and, in all times, think outside the box. To be able to deliver a work that incorporates creativity, ingenuity and excellence that pleases both the client and myself, is what I aim to do.

PART

CONCEPT ART From one idea to another

// 7

“Concept Designs are the foundations of great films, games and many other projects, be it within or without the field of arts. As an animation student, I was trained to be able to think creatively and to succesfully develop concept designs that would make strong and promising foundations for whatever project is given me.

CAPSTONE character concept art

// 9

“For our thesis, we were tasked to create an animation that tackled a significant social problem. Our group decided on creating a short 2D film about adolescent suicide after a series of suicides involving highschool and college students broke out throughout the city back in 2015.

// 10

Character Name: Jane Doe Characteristics: melancholic, troubled, quiet Concept by: Trish Isiderio

// 11

Jane Doe, our film’s protagonist, was the representation of every adolescent - vulnerable, moody and faced with the stresses of everyday life. Jane’s characteristics were “melancholic, troubled, quiet”; to emphasize these traits, i designed Jane as a lanky girl with regular features and who slouched in every pose. Due to difficulties during the animation process, Jane’s later design was altered into something more simple.

// 12

Character Name: Beth Characteristics: bubbly, understanding, caring Concept by: Trish Isiderio

// 13

Beth was Jane’s antithesis - optimistic and hopeful where Jane was pesimistic and void of hope. She would be the one to help Jane through her emotional obstaces and provide a positive turn in the film. I designed Beth to be pixie-like, to accentuate her bubbly personality; she has slender features and a lithe body. Due to difficulties during the animation process, Beth’s later design was altered into something more simple.

HELLFORGED WARRIORS character concept art

// 15

“During my internship at Hellforged Games Studio, I was mentored by a seasoned illustrator on how to create game character concepts, adapting to the styles of online games. As part of my training, I was tasked to create character designs for a number of warriors following the aesthetics of the game the studio was currently developing.

7:30 storyboard

// 19

“For our sound design class, we were assigned to create a short storyboard about a student getting ready for school, and using this storyboard, we would record sound effects that were appropriate and would complement each scene. I created a storyboard for the short clip I entitled “7:30”; the storyboard showed a young man’s daily morning routine before going to school. For each scene transition, the character remained in the center of the camera while the background panned to the left.”

DON’T STARVE character designs

// 23

“Another project I was given during my internship was to create character designs for the popular survival game, Don’t Starve. To exercise my ability to adapt to different styles of drawing, I was tasked to create Willy the Sailor and Penelope, both of whom are characters with potential to be suggested into the game.”

// 24

// 25

Willy is a sailor, stranded in a deserted island without any company, reosurces or hope. Character advantages are a makeshift slingbag for extra luggage and a spear for protection. Character disadvantage is his fear of the dark, which causes his sanity to shrink low everynight.

// 26

// 27

Penelope is a scientist specializing in Flora and Fauna, and intent on rescuing her lover from the hands of an insidious crook asking for the flower of eternal youth in exchange for her lover’s life. Character advantage is her skill in finding minerals, herbs and fruits quickly and a bag for extra luggage. Character disadvantage is her flimsy strength and misfortune for always being hunted down by animals.

3D MODELLING Asset design

// 29

“3D modelling and animation was part of our curriculum, as well as one of the areas where I was trained during internship. I specialize in initial low poly modelling, UV texturing and asset creation.

PART

COMICS From one issue to the next

// 35

“I’ve been in love with comics since I was small, and have started illustrating my own comics since grade school. I take up comics illustrating projects here and there, changing and adapting my drawing style to what I think complements the storyline given me. Comic illustration is one of my specialties, mostly ecause of my sheer love for comics.

// 36

PUN COMICS The puntastic adventures

// 37

“A puntastic adventure of a punny quartet punded by The Spectrum. The pun comics were a short comedy strip published in two magazine issues of the Spectrum. They followed four characters in hilarious adventures, all the while talking in a series of corny themed puns. I illustrated both comics.

// 40

PSYCH EPISODES a take on psychiatry

// 41

“I was employed to create a series of short comic strips for a fellow student. These comic strips told short stories of various characters that showed psyhcological reasoning in their situations.

EPISODE 1 Kate slaved her entire two years at college to get good grades, and, to her delight, she got five A’s. She applied for the top five universities in the country, and eventually decided to go to Oxford University. When she got there, she found the university was pretty average and wasn;t exactly as great as she expected. To solve the dissonance between the huge effort to go there, and the reality that the university was pretty average, she convinces herself that Oxford is the best place ever.

// 44

// 45

EPISODE 2 At work, James isn’t monitored very often. Everytime he takes his one hour break, he actually goes for an hour and a half. Rather than believe he’s stealing getting paid for time he isn’t working - he justifies it by saying he’s overworked and deserves the extra time-off.

SEE a not-so-super hero webcomic

// 47

“See is a webcomic I am currently writing and illustrating. I intially created this to be an entry in a webcomic competition sponsored by Stan Lee. See is a story about Francine Baylon, a college student who can barely keep up with her classes, let alone her powers, which enables her to see everything happening around her within a 400m radius. When she starts getting the hang of her powers, she has to struggle with the desire to stay normal and the guilt to help those whose needs have been unwillingly brought to her.

GRAPHIC DESIGN From one design to another

// 51

“I started on graphic design when I was in my second year of college, and since then, I’ve been doing small pro bono projects on the side. I favor branding and identity design, although I try to train myself in layout design as well.

// 52

// 53

Project Name: Greenthumb Greenthumb is one of my personal projects; an exercise to hone my skills in graphic design. Greenthumb is an organic store that sells fresh and naturally grown vegetables and fruits, as well as coffee beans. I opted for a vibrant green color to give the brand a fresh feel to it. For the logo, I created a literal thumb based off the name.

// 54

// 55

Project Name: Watermelon fruit parlor Watermelon fruit parlor is another one of my personal projects. It is a shoppe that serves fruit centered food and drinks. I picked playful shades of green and pink, like those of a watermelon, for the brand’s theme. For the first logo, I opted for a zesty font with a silhouette of a watermelon on top. For the second logo, I chose a simplier font and played with the letter ‘A’ by replacing it with a watermelon slice.

SOCIALIGHTS online branding

// 57

“For our technopreneurship class, we were tasked to create an imaginary business, develop it, and pitch it to a group of prospective investors. We created Socialights, an advertising troupe that specializes in online advertising.

ILLUSTRATIONS From one canvas to the next

// 61

“I mostly do pro bono illustartions, taking in different kinds of projects to help me become more versatile with my drawing styles. Illustrating is one of my specializations, mostly because I enjoy the arrtistic freedom and creativity one is allowed.

// 62

This is the first of four illustrations I made and submitted to Dojo8, with the theme “RJ and Jireh’s magical fishbowl”. As an exercise, I would pick a piece of paper from a fishbowl, which my friends RJ and Jireh have filled with random words, and draw an illustration based on whatever word I got.
