Wildlife at ACE During your stay at ACE, you may encounter many different insects, rodents, and animals. After all, our resort inhabits their natural environment. Although we have a regular routine for common bug and rodent extermination in our chalets and cabins, there are some ‘critters’ that manage to get past all our efforts to keep them out. If you experience a nuisance bug, rodent, or animal please contact a staff member to assist you. NEVER attempt to pet or pick up a wild animal. They will defend themselves if they feel threatened!

Poisonous Plants Poison Ivy The most common skin irritant in our woodlands is poison ivy. It produces a chemical in the oil of the plant’s leaves that may cause an allergic reaction. Common symptoms are burning, itching, redness, and blistering of the skin. Most people don’t realize they’ve even touched the plant. Often it’s mixed in with other vegetation and not noticed until it’s too late. Being able to identify the plant is the best way to avoid contact. Follow the rule ‘Leaves of three, let them be.’ Keeping the skin covered in situations in which exposure is hard to avoid is the best way to prevent a problem. There are many harmless plants with only three leaves, especially in the spring. However, it’s best to avoid all three-leafed plants if you are unsure.
Caution The number of plants that are poisonous when ingested are too numerous to list. However, it’s worth mentioning here, because they can make you very sick, or worse, cause death. Again, the best practice is to avoid exposure. NEVER eat any part of a plant you find in the woods, including the leaves or berries. If you suspect an ingestion, seek immediate medical attention.
If you are exposed to poison ivy, according to the FDA, you should quickly (within 10 minutes) take the following steps: • First, cleanse exposed areas with rubbing alcohol. • Next, wash the exposed areas with water only (no soap yet, since soap can move the urushiol, which is the oil from the poison ivy that triggers the rash, around your body and actually make the reaction worse). • Now, take a shower with soap and warm water. • Lastly, put gloves on and wipe everything you had with you, including shoes, tools, and your clothes, with rubbing alcohol and water. Unfortunately, if you wait more than 10 minutes the urushiol (oil), will likely stay on your skin and trigger the poison ivy rash. You may not be able to stop it on your skin, but you might still scrub your nails and wipe off your shoes, etc., so that you don’t spread the urushiol to new areas, or someone else. Commercial products, like Zanfel, Ivy Cleanse Towelettes, and Tecnu Extreme Poison Ivy Scrub, are also available over-the-counter, if you don’t want to use rubbing alcohol. Follow the manufacturers directions on each product.
