How to Grow a Garden of Golden Violets In the summer of 2001 when Ruth Hitchens Ritchie, Gamma Delta, organized a reunion for fellow chapter sisters at Adrian College in Adrian, MI, she didn’t expect her labor of love to “bloom” into a garden of Golden Violets! The Gamma Delta Chapter was formed at Adrian College in 1961, but was closed in the early 1990s. Ruth Nancy Bennett and her friends had talked about planning a reunion, and enlisted the help of the College Alumni Department. During the event, Tri Sigma alumnae stayed in a dorm and ate in the dining hall, shared memories and sang old Carol Wacker & Lynne Phillips Sigma songs. Ten years later they decided that they had so much fun, they did it again.

and worked together on the “quest” of finding more Gamma Delta sisters who were eligible to receive their Golden Violet. What followed over the next few months were phone calls, emails, nomination forms submitted, and more Gamma Delta sisters from all over the country who proudly received their Golden Violets. If you have ever run across someone who started their sisterhood journey Marilyn Kremer with you, there is always a special joy and interest. Ruth did not accomplish this by herself, and is extremely grateful to Toni Dinges for her quick responses to the many emails, and her ability to find the information that Ruth needed. To date, 25 Gamma Delta Doreen Val Sickle alumnae have been awarded the Golden Violet, with more than half of those thanks to Ruth’s persistence and love for Tri Sigma. Hopefully one day another alumna may find herself in the position of being able to start a garden of Golden Violets. She could use Ruth’s story as a guide.

July 2015 Ruth received a call from a Gamma Delta sister, Beth Jobse DeMeritt, who had recently received Sue Jones her Golden Violet. They thought because the chapter had been chartered over 50 years ago, there must be several other sisters who would be eligible to receive the Golden Violet. Ruth then Jeanne Lasky contacted Toni Dinges, Alumnae Membership Coordinator at National Headquarters,

From the National President

Autumn is in the air! Hello Golden Violet Sisters! Although I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of cooler temperatures and crisp autumn days, I find myself reflecting on the events of the past several months, which are now quickly becoming fond memories. It’s been quite an eventful summer, and the grandeur of it all began right away, early in June! Our oldest son graduated from high school and is now in his first year at Wake Forest University; I celebrated a milestone birthday; and I was elected Tri Sigma’s 14th National President…all within the same weekend! Then, of course, there were the Olympic Games in Rio. Since that time I have received many cards and emails referencing the “golden years” and I have found myself reminiscing about these and other golden moments. “Golden” seems to generate such pleasant thoughts - the Golden Age, Golden years, Golden Girls, the Golden Rule, Gold medals, Golden Anniversary and of course Golden Violets. Having recently turn 50 and having now entered the “golden age”, it’s incredible to realize that Tri Sigma has been a significant part of my life for more than half of it, as I am sure you share the same sentiments. I’ve learned, experienced, endured, cherished, enjoyed and appreciated so much in Tri Sigma, and have been incredibly thankful for our sorority over the past 30 some years. I am ever so grateful for you, our Golden Violets, who have paved the way, set the standards, carried forward the principles of our Founders, and have continued to inspire me to achieve yet another milestone in life – receiving my Golden Violet. Words such as excellence, high achieving, exceptional, talented and successful are often associated with “gold” or “golden”, so it’s fitting for Tri Sigma to recognize such an extraordinary group of women. “Gold Habits” are words Nike has branded across an athletic shirt, which my youngest son often wears during soccer practice. Each time I see it on him, I am reminded of all that it implies and for which it stands. It also is an expression which represents those traits exuded by our Golden Violets. Your “Gold Habits” of honor, loyalty, love, steadfast commitment, faithfulness, service, support and lifetime friendship inspire us all and it is with sincere appreciation and heartfelt gratitude that I thank you for continuing to be the gems of our sisterhood! Sigma smiles and hugs to you!

Natalie Moore Averette, Gamma Beta National President 2

From your Golden Violet Coordinator

Greetings from New Orleans. My name is Mandy Meehan Chocheles. I was initiated in the Gamma Eta Chapter at Loyola University, New Orleans, 52 years ago. I am a longtime member, and former president, of the New Orleans Alumnae Chapter. My husband, Pete, and I live in Metairie, a suburb of New Orleans. We are blessed to have our three children and five grandchildren all nearby. After 25 years of National Officer service, which included three years as Alumnae Vice President on our Executive Council, I thought it was time to retire. At the Golden Violet Reunion in Woodstock October 2015, Aimee Boland, Director of Lifetime Engagement, asked me to be your new Golden Violet Coordinator. It took me about five minutes – and a call to my husband (who just laughed!) to accept. I am looking forward to representing the hundreds of Golden Violets in our national sisterhood during the next three years. Like many of you, I am retired (after 27 years teaching elementary school), but find that my life is full, and finally busy with things that I want to do on my schedule! Whether it’s church commitments, volunteering with several organizations, traveling, or being able to exercise when we want, retirement is a good time in our lives. Hopefully many of you are able to count Sigma experiences as a part of your calendar. Whether you are as fortunate as I am to have a wonderful alumnae chapter to be involved with,

#GivingTuesday is November 29

or you maintain close ties with Sigma sisters new and old, always know that Tri Sigma is grateful for your lengthy membership in our sisterhood. As you read through this issue of the Golden Glimpses, you will notice some changes. This past July, when I received the list of women who had been awarded the Golden Violet since 2015, I was astounded at how many names were on that list. Since there is no way we can profile all of these lovely sisters, in future Golden Glimpses publications there will be shorter, more concise, mention of as many as we can over the coming year. Although still in the planning stages, I would like to see more digital communication come to you as well. Finally, you may not know that Aimee Jensen Boland has a new title with our national organization: Director of Lifetime Engagement. Doesn’t that describe us perfectly? A lifetime of Sigma sisterhood! In July 2019, the theme for the next Tri Sigma Convention is “The Power of Our Stories”. Who has the most stories? We do! So this Triennium looks like it will be a special one for us. Please keep in touch with your Sigma sisters, or with me (sigmom3@aol.com).

From the Foundation Chairman

Celebrating Empowerment Dear Sisters,

Empowering Children

As we enter into a new triennium, I still feel the excitement from our 2016 National Convention in Chicago. Since then the Foundation has celebrated many achievements and the momentum continues. Without you we would not have been able to break fundraising records or bring new philanthropic opportunities to Sigmas everywhere. I’m thrilled to share highlights of how you are empowering our members for 2016-2017:

As we redefined Sigmas Serve Children at Convention, Robbie Page’s vision remains. We continue our commitment to children’s health initiatives. Our added partnership with March of Dimes complements our history, mission, vision and values and will create firsthand experiences for fundraising and service. With the current impact Tri Sigma makes to benefit children, we will soon make even more of an impact on our members, campuses and communities through March of Dimes.

Empowering Achievement The Board awarded $24,000 for graduate and undergraduate scholarships to 21 sisters for the 20162017 school year. With another four scholarships in the process of endowment, our ability to award members for merit-based achievement will continue to grow. With a gift of $25,000, payable over a five-year period, you can empower a Sigma in her scholastic success. Empowering Leaders In 2015-2016 Tri Sigma offered over 175 hours of critical leadership training through our four national leadership programs: Officer Academy, Prevention Institute, Labyrinth Leadership Experience and Dunham Women of Character Institute. Our $100,000 in educational and leadership grants to the Sorority served over 800 members, both collegiate and alumnae. The leadership opportunities we’re able to fund directly impact the success of our chapters and empower our sisters to be the leaders the world needs. We are excited to introduce our newest leadership program, Presidents Academy. Presidents from all collegiate chapters will gather in Dulles, VA in January 2017 to learn and lead using the values of Tri Sigma as their guide. With a gift of $225, you will empower a President to leave a lasting impact on her chapter and fellow Sigma sisters.

Similar to our fight against polio, Tri Sigma is joining efforts in the historic research to give every baby a fighting chance at life. March of Dimes brings a support team and resources to ensure our members can create fundraising events or service projects, build local relationships, and raise awareness in our communities. Now we will be able to consistently empower our Sigma philanthropists with the resources they need. We need you in order to continue support of the sorority’s vision to provide exceptional experiences that will empower women to change the world. With your continued generosity, you can inspire Tri Sigmas to make the Foundation a philanthropic priority. Help us empower. Help us reach thousands of sisters and be part of the change, by making your donation today at the link below. For Sigma,

Jennifer Avenel, Delta Pi Foundation Chair

Meet Our Newest Golden Violets As we shine the spotlight on some of our more recent Golden Violets, we see that there are many similarities. When considering to join, most knew little about sororities in general. They were looking for a sense of belonging and friendship, a place of their own on a large university campus, a group of women who were down to earth and sincerely interested in maintaining lifelong friendships.

Fink Kuhn, Beta Gamma shared that she met Mabel Lee Walton and stayed at Walton House for a leadership conference. Most of these experiences - and many more - were not expected as their college days began. Fast forward 50 some years later, as the women highlighted below received their Golden Violet. Whether it was at a local meeting, luncheon, at a special Founders Day celebration, or even during National Convention, the perspective was unanimous, “How did 50 years go by so quickly?”

Their favorite memories of being a collegian were also similar. The excitement of receiving a bid card, the special reward of participating in “rush” and having a friend become a Sigma sister, participation in Greek Week festivities, or being a chapter officer. Susie

We’re proud to feature six recent Golden Violets and give you a highlight of their Tri Sigma experience.

Therese Dauer Barry Therese Dauer Barry was in the Gamma Eta Chapter at Loyola University, fall 1965 through 1968. Although no longer living in New Orleans, she and her husband, Bob, a retired dentist, raised their five children there, and she was active in the New Orleans Alumnae Chapter. She says that her experience with Tri Sigma taught her how to work well in a group. She presently lives in Beech Mountain, NC and volunteers for various town activities in this small community. Keeping up with their eight grandchildren who live in different states is a joy. Although there is no alumnae chapter nearby, Therese stays in touch with her New Orleans alumnae sisters regularly and shares her gift of photography of the beautiful nature scenes near their home via Facebook.

Sherrie Johannsen Devlin Sherrie Johannsen Devlin, Beta Lambda, University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, participated in her chapter from fall 1965 through spring 1967. Originally from Wisconsin, she went back to college in her 40’s and graduated with high honors from Southern Methodist University. She and her second husband have a blended family of five children, their respective spouses, and 14 combined grandchildren and great grandchildren. Sherrie is a longtime member of the Dallas Alumnae Chapter. In addition to her involvement as an officer and faithful chapter member, Sherrie reached out to several collegiate chapters to assist them as they grew and developed. Zeta Gamma and Eta Kappa sisters all know Sherrie well as she helps with recruitment and initiation for both chapters. As many of the women graduated and moved to the Dallas area, they joined the Dallas Alumnae Chapter as well. The congratulations and hugs she received from them when she received her Golden Violet were very special to her. She shares she never misses a National Convention!

Susie Fink Kuhn Susie Fink Kuhn, Beta Gamma, attended Ball State University, and was a member of her Tri Sigma chapter from fall 1965 to spring 1969, serving as Chapter President during that time. She was an educator and administrator in Carmel, IN for almost 31 years. She and her husband of 48 years, Tom, moved recently to Michigan. They have three children (their daughter Jennifer is a Tri Sigma also), and eight grandchildren. As a longtime member of the Indianapolis Suburban Alumnae Chapter, Susie is now looking to join another alumnae chapter near their new home. Susie’s national service to Tri Sigma includes many areas and many years! She was the Alumnae Panhellenic Chairman from 1975-1978, Convention Chairman 19831989, and Alumnae Vice President 1989-1998. After her Executive Council service, she worked with the Sigma Sigma Sigma Foundation as Chairman and on the Board of Directors 2002-2008. At her 13th Convention this past June in Chicago, she received her Golden Violet. Her present volunteer service includes being a School Commission member for her local elementary school.

Gwendolyn Honey Leas Gwendolyn Honey Leas, a member of Beta Kappa Chapter at Arizona State University from 1964-1968, has lived in southern California since graduation. She taught 4th, 5th and 6th graders for 34 years. Because she stayed at the same school, she was able to teach multiple generations. Being an active member of the Phoenix Alumnae Chapter has kept her busy supporting all that group’s many activities. She recently organized a Beta Kappa reunion of members from her college days and enjoyed sharing time and memories with the 20 women from Arizona and California who participated. Knitting chemo caps for three hospitals, and supporting homeless and church groups are part of her present-day volunteer service. Gwendolyn credits her time at Beta Kappa with providing important leadership opportunities. She was Pledge Educator and then President, and realizes that her early days as a Tri Sigma have provided a bond between sisters, whether you have known them for 48 years or have just met.
