Global and Local, FLIBS Dazzles on First Two Days Innovation and evolution, old friends and new partners, were the themes of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show’s first two days. By Erik Petersen
The 64th annual show opened with a nod towards its status as the world’s largest show of its kind. “The International Boat Show is truly international and what it brings to Broward County, the City of Fort Lauderdale, is really a worldwide audience,” Andrew Doole said at the show’s opening. Doodle is President of U.S. Boat Shows at Informa Markets, which organizes FLIBS. “So individuals will fly from all over the world to be here to participate in this boat show.” For Phil Purcell, president and CEO of the Marine Industries Association of South Florida, which owns the show, FLIBS
continues to be in the beating heart of the yachting industry. “It’s right between Palm Beach and Miami,” he said. “It’s got a world -class international airport … and equally important, it’s got a different feel than the feel that Miami has and the feel that Palm Beach has. “It’s literally a melting pot of our community and then when you add the yards and the services that our community has in terms of the marine industry, that many yards up river, there’s nowhere else like that in the world.” Seminars and events in the show’s first CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

two days illustrated that international, idea-led ethos. They included talks on A.I., Florida coral reef restoration, women in ocean conservation, higher education research and innovation - and the Superyacht Chef Sushi Showdown. Several seminars dealt with issues such as mental health, addiction, bullying and harassment in yachting. The Marine Research Hub also recognized innovation in ocean-related industries. FLIBS partnered with the Marine Research Hub to create the MRH Innovation and Sustainability award, which debuted this year. The first winner was Sunreef Yachts/ Sunreef Ventures. The company’s 80 Sunreef Power Eco SÓ offers an electric battery bank combined with composite-integrated solar panels. Other finalists were Volvo Penta, Boening USA, Guangdong EPropulsions and Technology Limited. “These marine industry companies demonstrate the opportunity to elevate innovation leading towards more sustainable practices in the industry that will not only continue to build businesses but take care of our most valuable resource, our marine and coastal environments,” said Katherine O’Fallon, the Marine Research Hub’s Executive Director. MIASF launched the Marine Research Hub in 2017. A central goal of the organization has been to bring together various aspects of the oceanbased “blue economy,” highlighting both the university-led research and ocean-based businesses in South
Florida. Leaders have used the term “Silicon Valley of the Seas” to describe their vision for South Florida, and for monetizing the blue economy. As the show rolls into the weekend, organizers believe the show started as strong as it could have. “We couldn’t have asked for a better start to the 64th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show,” Doole said in a statement after the first day. “The wonderful weather provided an ideal backdrop for attendees to explore the amazing array of boats and exhibitors on display. It’s a clear reflection of the energy and enthusiasm of the boating community, and we’re thrilled to welcome everyone back to all seven show sites. “This year, visitors have a variety of exhibits to explore, offering an even more extensive and exciting experience for marine enthusiasts. FLIBS has something for everyone from fishing boats, runabouts, cruisers, kayaks, marine accessories, fishing equipment, diving gear, to personal watercraft.”

FLIBS is known for its large ocean-going vessels, but the Broward Design Center was offering something a little different. The eclectic furniture store, whose location on Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale is worth a walk around (be sure to say hi to an in-house parrot), came to FLIBS with furniture and what we’ll call accent pieces. Including a clam shell fossil that Robert from the store said they’re trying to get into the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest. It’s 835 pounds and was found with others when excavating for wells in Kenya. (Robert said that when it sells, 60% of the profits will go back there.) There’s a clever clue in the name “Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show” as to what gets sold at FLIBS. But there’s also plenty of interesting products - and stories away from the docks. Some people are selling their services. Outside Bahia Mar I ran into my friend Horse Joel and his pedicab. He comes by his nickname naturally - the man has the calves of a Kentucky Derby champion. He also has the seasoned cyclist’s ability to anticipate what an angry East Coast driver is about to do. What he cannot do, however, is conjure business. And the early week, Joel said, isn’t great for people wanting rides. But by the time the weekend rolls around and the mood is a bit more party than business, he’ll be pedaling courageously into traffic with plenty of fares in the back. Inside one of the blessedly air conditioned temporary buildings, they
were selling everything from Central American fishing destinations to knives to sweat-wicking athleisure dad-wear. By my points, mooring system maker TideSlide won the slogan competition. “Your berth control is our business,” their sign read. Back in a corner, I found Talii. Before I could finish my first question, CEO Lisa Gattoni asked me what my name was and how it was spelled. She then told me about the sheets, towels, furniture covers and other products Talii made. She had a lot to say about their stain- and liquid-resistant properties, how easily stored they are, the many colors and patterns they come in. As I was standing there, people came by who had placed an order. They had sent a photo of their vessel, and an image was now emblazoned on cloths along with the name of the vessel. “This is so amazing!” the woman said, holding one up. “You ladies are amazing!” Lisa said this was her company’s 10-year anniversary, and she still gets goosebumps when people love what they buy from her. Before I left, she presented me with a little something - a blue handkerchiefsized cloth emblazoned with my name and a lovely garland design. For the record, your humble editor doesn’t ask for stuff. But they’d already made it, and typically you don’t get lots of Eriks outside Minnesota or Denmark anyway. Plus, I could frankly use something for brow-wiping out on the docks. I’m no Horse Joel, but in my own way, I’m out there hustling.
