Types Of Mental Illness “Mind is all powerful,” says a popular quote. There is hardly anything that our mind cannot do. However, despite these abilities, the human mind is equally prone to much mental illness. In other words, these days, the toll in the cases of people suffering from some or the other type of mental illness clearly indicates that people seem to be lacking the knack of keeping their mind healthy.

So what exactly do you mean by mental illness? Mental illness is defined as an emotional disorder that affects your brain thereby damaging your thinking and perception. Many a times mental illnesses are considered as mentally challenged, but that's wrong. Therefore, to get a clear of what mental illness is all about; here are some of its common types: •

Anxiety disorder: This is a syndrome wherein people experience fear of certain things, situations or people. This so-called fear manifests into anxiety which thereby brings a phenomenal change in your physicality or behaviour. Anxiety is characterised as an involuntary and uncontrollable behaviour.

Mood disorders: This is a syndrome wherein an individual faces constant mood shifts. In other words, while facing this syndrome, an individual experiences either too much joy or extreme sorrow. The most common type of mood disorders are depression, bipolar disorder and some specific phobias.


Psychotic disorders: This is a syndrome wherein the individual experiences twisted awareness and thinking. In other words, in this syndrome the individual is constantly struggling between the real life and imaginations. The most common types of this syndrome are hallucination i.e. imagining, hearing or visualising things that do not exist in real and delusions i.e. being stuck in preconceived false beliefs

Eating disorders: This syndrome is characterised of being extra conscious and mad overweight and food.

Personality disorders: In this syndrome, individual experiences extreme and rigid personality traits that are distressing to the person and also key contributors to troubles at personal and professional effort.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): OCD is a common phenomenon among people. This is a syndrome wherein individual experiences regular thoughts or fears leading to performing of certain activities on a repeat mode. The disturbing thoughts are called obsessions, and the repetitive activities are called compulsions.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): Life is full of challenges and sometimes some challenges scare you to the hell. When an individual experiences such scary and traumatic incidents, it becomes very difficult for them to get over it. Such a condition of being haunted with traumatic incidents is called PTSD
