The Hampi Foundation was formed in 2000 to formulate a comprehensive and holistic master plan for the management of the unique heritage of the area “Hampi”. The founder members include Shama Pawar Shapiro (founder of T.K.T. a grassroot NGO, working in the field of heritage management and preservation). Dr. Debaorah Thiagarajan (founder of Madras Crafts foundation) and Mrs. Sangita Jindal. It is a step towards intelligent and comprehensive attitude to heritage management than has hitherto been the case in the ruins of the great Vijayanagara Empire. Apart from above foundation sponsors “Hampi Utsav Festival” where local and national level artistics participate in dance music and other forms of art.
HAMPI CONFERENCE January 19-20, 2008
Sponsored by the Hampi Foundation, this two-day conference is in continuation to a large number of academic conferences & discussions that have taken place in the last few years regarding the history and the future of Hampi World Heritage site.
at the Hampi Lounge JSW Steel Ltd
While these have been admirably hosted by museums and academic institutions in Los Angeles, Houston and Mumbai, they were not attended by the local stakeholders. Some of the regional administrators, archaeologists, architects, contractors, craftsmen, & people in Karnataka are just now beginning to learn the remarkable amount of information that has been assembled. This conference is therefore envisaged to extend the discussion of the thinking that is taking in government, the non-governmental organizations and the private sector. This conference will be illustrious gathering of leading scholars both from India and abroad who have worked in this area. The papers presented will cover a wide range of topics from art & architecture to epigraphy and conservation. Also, papers read at this conference will be published in a monograph along with papers invited from other scholars who could not attend the conference.
