Truly, for some men,
destiny isn’t written,
unless they write it. Shri O. P. Jindal was a father figure for millions. Where others would see walls, he saw doors of opportunities. He continuously worked towards making India self-reliant. He believed that growth should be inclusive and made it his life’s mission to help the underprivileged sections of society. A successful industrialist, politician, leader and a passionate philanthropist, late Shri O. P. Jindal achieved this and more with his inspiring energy. And amongst other things, he has left behind a legacy of inspiration.
Shri O. P. JINDAL August 7, 1930 - March 31, 2005 O. P. Jindal Group - Founder and Visionary 2
Foreword As a young boy, I grew up in a steel town where my father was involved in steel business. Since then I have always dreamt of building an integrated steel plant. I was really excited when the opportunity came my way to build a steel plant at Vijayanagar. This land, which was once a historic city, was completely barren when we started this project in 1994. There was no tree on the landscape. Having been a river bed thousands of years ago, this land was strewn with rocks and pebbles.
This is where the journey began for us at JSW and today we have set up one of the greenest steel plants in the world. I can confidently claim that this plant is one of the most energy efficient and clean steel plants in the world and we at JSW are proud of it.
JSW’s effort in setting up this steel plant is our humble contribution in shaping a modern and developed India. We always believe in converting dreams into reality. This has been possible due to the commitment and never-say-die attitude of the entire JSW team.
While setting up the steel plant, we have worked hand in hand with the local community, who are our partners in progress.
This is a defining philosophy of the JSW Group.
SAJJAN JINDAL Chairman & Managing Director JSW Steel

Classic age of Ancient Vijayanagar
The history of India is a remarkable journey where different religions, rulers and empires contributed in making this country a rich cultural heritage. The Classical Age in ancient India began with the ‘Gupta Empire’ and diminished with the ‘Vijayanagar Empire’. Vijaynagar Dynasty ruled over India for 3 centuries. The Empire created an epoch in the Indian history that transcended regionalism by promoting Nationalism as a unifying factor. Vijayanagar is in Bellary District of northern Karnataka. It is the name of the now-ruined capital city of the historic Vijayanagar
4
Kingdom that extended over southern India and included the territories of Mysore, Trichinopally, Kannada, Pondicherry, Chingalpet and Kanchivaram. The Vijayanagar Empire was established in 1336 by Harihara I and his brother Bukka Raya I of the Yadava lineage. The empire rose to prominence as a culmination of attempts by the southern powers against Islamic invasions by the end of the 13th century. It lasted until 1646 although its power declined after a major military defeat in 1565 by the Deccan sultanates.

The empire is named after its capital city of Vijayanagar, that translates as the ‘City of Victory’. Its impressive ruins surround modern Hampi, now a World Heritage Site. The Vijayanagar empire reached its zenith under the leadership of Krishna Deva Raya between 1509 to 1529. His rule is termed as the Golden Age of Vijayanagar Empire. The Vijayanagar empire’s legacy includes many monuments spread over South India, the best known being the group at Hampi. 5

The efficient administration of the empire brought many futuristic technologies like water management systems for irrigation. The empire’s patronage enabled fine arts and literature to reach new heights in the languages of Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Sanskrit, while Carnatic music evolved into its current form. The ruins of its historical monuments have stood the ravages of man and time and still evoke memories of the grandeur of a bygone era. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru wrote
The Stone Chariott within the Vithala temple
in the ‘Discovery of India’ “From contemporary accounts, it appears that the city was rich and beautiful. There were arcades and magnificent galleries and bazaars and rising above them all was the palace of the King. The whole city was full of gardens. Look at the city now-it lies in ruins.” A Persian ambassador once said, “The city is such that the pupil of the eye has never seen a place like it and the ear of intelligence has never been informed that there existed anything to equal it in the world.”

Tryst with destiny Transformation of a barren land into a green steel plant A new chapter was written in the history of Indian steel Industry when JSW made its foray at Vasind in 1982 and setup a 20 Hi CR mill. JSW then acquired Piramal Steel Ltd. that was operating a mini steel mill at Tarapur in Maharashtra. Post economic liberalization, in 1992 when the Government of India adopted economic reforms, Jindal group was amongst the first to grab the opportunity. In 1971, Mrs Indira Gandhi set the foundation stone for an integrated steel plant at Tornagallu. The plan remained a non-starter till 1994. The public sector 8
shelved the idea because of resource constraints and the idea remained a distant dream. It was then, the Government of Karnataka approached the OP Jindal Group to set up an integrated steel plant at Tornagallu in the Bellary–Hospet area of Karnataka, the heart of the iron ore belt. It is just 340 kms from Bangalore, and well connected to Goa and Chennai Ports. Today, the plant is spread across a wide area on a land measuring 10500 acres. JSW succeeded in commencing Vijayanagar steel plant in a record 33 months. Selecting the COREX technology, 1st in India along
with the traditional blast furnace route provided innovative solutions to power and water scarcity. The Company achieved an important milestone by commissioning the Hot Strip Mill manufacturing Hot rolled Coil by backward integration in 1997. Since then the company has achieved steady growth.

And today after 14 years, JSW Steel is one of the fastest growing steel company in the world. It became the first steel manufacturer in India to reach 10 mtpa production capacity at a single location with the commissioning of 4th Blast furnace (of capacity 3.2) in July 2011 at Vijayanagar.
Today, JSW Steel is proud to become one of the most eco-friendly and energy-efficient steel plants in the world. It is ranked 7th among top 32 world class steelmakers.

Our contribution to the
India growth story India’s largest integrated steel plant at a single location; 4 fold growth in just 7 years At JSW, the passion to excel and question the status quo pushes towards inspiring results. JSW Steel became India’s largest steel manufacturer in just 14 years with a combined capacity of 14.3 MTPA (including JSW ISPAT Steel). The urge to transform waste to wealth has created a distinct advantage of lower conversion cost. These achievements are the affirmation to the continuous journey of JSW on its path to become a leading world-class steel producer. During the expansion from 3.8 MTPA to 6.8 MTPA from 2006 to 2009, JSW Steel 12
commissioned state-of-the-art facilities such as Cold Rolling Mill, Wire Rod Mill, Billet Caster, Steel melting Shop-2, Bar Mill and Gas Recovery Type Coke Oven-3. At the peak of the global recession in February 2009, JSW commissioned India’s then largest blast furnace with a capacity of 2.8 MTPA taking our overall capacity to 6.8 MTPA at Vijayanagar. Continuing with the confidence, the Company accelerated its efforts to achieve the once unimaginable dream of 10 MTPA capacity with the commissioning of India’s largest and
