aruda Indonesia Airways continues to expand its business. This year, the largest airline in Indonesia has added several new routes. There are at least 17 domestic flights and the 5 new international routes operated in 2013. Erik Meijer, Director of Marketing and Sales Garuda Indonesia in Jakarta, said that the international routes consist of Medan - Penang, Surabaya - Singapore, Denpasar - Brisbane, Jakarta – Perth and Jakarta Osaka. In addition, the newly opened domestic routes include Medan - Padang, Padang - Pekanbaru, Jakarta - Tanjung Pandan, Balikpapan - Berau and some other new domestic routes. “The massive addition of flight routes is supported by the addition of the number of planes owned by Garuda Indonesia. Throughout the year 2013, Garuda received 24 new aircraft. Among others, four Boeing 777 aircraft, 3 Airbus, a Boeing 737, and a Bombardier CRJ 1000, “ he said. He said further that some of the new aircrafts have been received and some will still be accepted until the end of the year. The additional fleet makes Garuda Indonesia optimistic to further improve its business performance. “We hope to increase the amount of passengers quite significantly this year,” he said. ( * )

President SBY is also optimistic that the national tourism sector will continue to grow, among others through cooperation between local governments and the private sectors. “ The economic potential of our tourism sector is still high and can be developed. I invite all regions and the business world to work together. One of the means of tourism development by the government is through organizing sail events that have been conducted continuously for five years, “he said. The social and economic benefits are real. I have set the event to become an annual event. In Sail Komodo 2013, the government, the Indonesian army (TNI), Indonesian National Police (Polri) as well as business community conducted service operations and social assistance to help people in need. “ The presence of foreign participants is also able to promote the natural beauty of Indonesia and introduce Komodo Island and its surroundings. This can bring more foreign tourists to the island and surrounding areas,” the president said. ( * )

ndonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono ( SBY ) said that Sail Komodo 2013 would be a good time to promote Indonesian marine potentials to the world. “This kind of event is part of part of historic milestone in the revival of our country in the Pacific era. We should show that our country is not only rich in natural resources but also has tourism potentials,” president said while opening the peak event of Sail Komodo 2013 in Labuan Bajo recently. Sail Komodo 2013 has the theme of “golden bridge towards NTT becomes a world class tourist destination.” It also serves as the momentum to make NTT as

the south gate of Indonesia’s development. Many ships stopped at the island of Komodo and the surrounding region. This would enliven tourism in NTT. “ I hope soon Komodo Island and the surrounding regions would be a world -class tourist destination. On this occasion, I also invite foreign tourists through Sail Komodo participants to see and visit the island of Komodo , “ the president said . He added that Sail Komodo is the fifth event after previously held Sail Bunaken in Manado in 2009, Sail Banda in Ambon in 2010, and the Sail Wakatobi and Bitong in 2011 and Sail Morotai in Morotai in 2012.

ASEAN: the Highest Foreign Tourist Arrival Growth in the World

S

outheast Asia (ASEAN) experiences the highest growth in foreign tourist arrival in the world during the period of 2005 to 2012, which is 8.3 percent. Absolute number of international tourists to ASEAN reached 84.6 million or 8.2 percent of total world tourist arrivals in 2012. “ This number has increased by 9.4 percent in 2012. Also in the first half of 2013, there was a 11.3 percent growth occurred, “said Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy ( Menparekraf ) Mari Elka Pangestu. Minister continued with the data and projections from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), which showed that the Asia Pacific region experienced the highest growth in foreign tourist arrivals by 6 percent during the period of 2005-2012, amounting to 7 percent in 2012, and by 6.2 percent in the first half of 2013. For the long term, the growth in Asia Pacific was also the highest at 4.9 percent and will increase from 331 million in 2010 to 530 million in 2030. “In other words, the market of foreign tourists visiting Asia Pacific will rise from 22 percent in 2010 to 30 percent in 2030, “ she said. A lot of foreign tourist movement is carried out within the region itself. Statistics show that four out of five tourist arrivals (80 percent) in the world comes from the same region. According to her, a similar proportion was found for foreign tourist visits in Asia Pacific. As for the ASEAN plus 6 (ASEAN plus China, Korea, Japan, Australia - New Zealand and India), the proportion is also close to 80 percent. “ In ASEAN, about 45 percent of foreign tourists visiting ASEAN come from ASEAN, “she said. This is higher than the proportion of intra - ASEAN trade by 25 percent and demonstrates the movement of people rather than goods, distance, and transportation costs seems to be more important. Mari projecting that in long term, the number of tourists to ASEAN will increase almost three times, from 69.9 million in 2010 to 187 million in 2030, or from 7.4 percent of the world share to 10.3 percent in 2030. The main factor explaining this trend is the high growth in Asia Pacific and South-East Asia and the growing middle class with increasing purchasing power continues; opening of the ASEAN countries or economic and political reforms that took place and an increase in the ASEAN regional cooperation. “For the first factor also means the growth of domestic tourists becomes important, especially in big countries, “she said. For example in Indonesia, current income from domestic tourism (about 18 billion U.S. dollars) is two times of foreign tourists (about 9 billion U.S. dollars). “For the second factor the result is an increase in the use of budget airline and more flights, infrastructure development, and a more open visa regime, “she continued. Opening Show of Miss World 2013 was closed with the performance of 129 contestants. All of the Miss World 2013 contestants dressed in traditional costumes from 33 provinces in Indonesia at the end of the opening at BICC, Nusa Dua, Sunday ( 8/9 ) night. Spectacular Opening

Mari Elka Pangestu

N

umber of foreign tourist arrivals to Indonesia in July 2013 showed a decrease in growth rate. This is because July is the month of fasting. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) data center information and the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy ( Kemenparekraf ), the number of foreign tourists visit in July 2013 reached as many as 717,784 tourists. This acquisition was up 2.4 percent compared to the same period last year, which was as many as 701, 200 tourists. “ Singapore and Malaysia fell; Singa-

pore fell by 2.9 percent and Malaysia by 13 percent. Growth rate decreased, even so the numbers keep rising, “said Mari Elka Pangestu in Jakarta recently . For example, tourist from the United Arab Emirates was down in number by 86.2 %, Bahrain by 65.7 %, and Saudi Arabia by 59.3 %. “There is a plausible reason for this decline, which is due to a matter of the fasting month. Moreover, many tourists come from Muslim countries, “said Mari. Even so, there are several countries that experienced an increase in visits in July 2013 compared to July 2012. Some of them are tourists from the PRC, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and the Netherlands. “In July 2013, the PRC rose by 29.9 %, Japan by 0.1 %, South Korea by 4 %, and Taiwan by 38.7 %, “ said Mari. However, cumulatively from January to July 2013, the number of foreign tourists coming to Indonesia amounted to

4,872,262 people. This figure is up 6.4 % compared to January-July 2012. Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy was optimistic that the target of foreign tourist visit in 2014 will be achieved. “We remain optimistic that 8.6 million as a moderate target can be achieved, “ added Mari. Mari added that this year there will be a lot of MICE -related events held in Indonesia, which certainly contribute foreign tourist arrival such as Miss World 2013, APEC and the World Culture Forum. The Room Occupancy Rate of star-hotel in 23 provinces in July 2013 reached at an average of 51.20 %, or down 1.12 points, compared with the occupancy rate in July 2012, which recorded 52.32 %. Revitalization of Lake Toba Festival 2013

M

inistry of Tourism and Creative Economy revitalize the Lake Toba Festival 2013 that was opened by Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sapta Nirwandar with sports tourism as a tourist icon of North Sumatra. “So far, the activities of Lake Toba Festival are based on project base. It becomes monotonous so we revive its activities by relying on sports tourism and lifting cultural arts, “said Nirwandar. According to him, the revitalization of Lake Toba Festival 2013, which took place on September 8 to 14 had the support from various parties so that it became spectacular with a budget at least Rp 10 billion. “The provincial government just provided Rp3.5 billion, Bank BNI also provided billions of rupiahs in addition to funds from Kemenparekraf and district government, “he explained. Tourism sport and cultural concepts are made for the next five years so that its implementation would be better with proper preparation. “This is a spectacular event; we revive some traditional sports tourism such as Solu Bolon, dragon boat activities typical of Lake Toba. There is also a swimming exhibition around the lake followed by 12 national swimmers and four international swimmers. While another sport is paraglid-

ing landing on the lake and the participants are in the air beating the drum, “Sapta said. The implementation of the different concepts in addition to bringing foreign and domestic tourists back to Lake Toba, will also encourage Batak people who live outside Sumatra to return home such as TB Silalahi , Ruhut Sitompul and other rich Batak people. He would oversee the implementation of the revitalization of Lake Toba Festival opening until the closing on 14 September 2013. “This revitalization should be managed to boost foreign tourists visiting North Sumatra especially with the presence of new airport Kuala Namu. Other monotonous events should also be revitalized, “Sapta said. Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy together with the Government of North Sumatra province, district government of Samosir and Toba and 9 District / City Government held a traditional ceremony Mangebang Solu Bolon to begin Lake Toba Festival 2013. This activity means releasing the boat for the first time into the water after going through traditional ritual of Batak. Meanwhile, Hinca Panjaitan, Director of Sports Lake Toba Festival 2013, added that Solu Mangebang procession is an important event because this ritual is one of the local knowledge that we have and should

be maintained well. In addition to the Solu Bolon, on 9-10 September 2013, as many as two hercules from Halim Perdanakusumah Airport in Jakarta and Abdul Rachman Saleh airport in Malang will fly more than 150 paragliding athletes from DKI Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Pekanbaru, Padang, Bali, Kalimantan and Sulawesi to enliven the festival. Riung

Vol. I No.1/10 2013

Riung, A new destination after Komodo

L

ast week, I had a chance to revisit Labuan Bajo in West Flores or more popular as a transit place before visiting Komodo Island. Labuan Bajo is a small town in the western tip of Flores. It has gone through quite a lot of changes over the past ten years. A number of star-hotels such as Bintang Flores Hotel, Jayakarta Hotel and La Prima Hotel stand along the beach. Not only that, Labuan Bajo is also crowded with various international-scale restaurants such as The Corner Restaurant, Italian Restaurant, Mediterranian and Paradise Bar and Restaurant situated on a Labuan Bajo hill. These changes complete the development of Labuan Bajo into a new tourist destination in western tip of Flores. This time, I did not only stay in the coastal town. The owner of Liveboards boat, Sunset Komodo, offered me to visit Riung, which is located in Ngada district – Flores. I agreed and spent around 9 hours from Labuan Bajo to Riung. The trip was fun and I was amazed by the stunning beauty of the stretch of islands with their sparkling white sand. We all enjoyed the trip to Riung by SUNSET KOMODO. Riung, a small fishing village on the north coast of the Ngada district, is the starting point for trips to the Seventeen Islands Marine Park Riung 17 islands, famed for its fantastic coral gardens. Many of the islands have beautiful white, sandy beaches and vivid reefs with an interesting underwater world that can be discovered with a snorkel and goggles. However, it is not only the marine park that contributes to the area’s special atmosphere. The charming village of Riung is rich in cul-

tural heritage and thus makes a perfect place to encounter the Riung’s exciting ceremonies around the traditional hunting and boxing activities of its people. The local people show a quite heterogeneous ethnic profile. Most of them are Bimanese and Buginese Muslims, Manggaraians, or people from Bajawa. This creates a unique and dynamic community with a diversified cultural output.

How to get there Riung is located approximately 72km from Bajawa. Along the Transflores ‘highway’, Riung can be either reached from Mbay (about 2 hours) or Bajawa (4 hours). The drive from Ende takes about 3–4 hours. If you are coming from Bajawa, you can choose the bus operator, which operates twice a day, in the morning and the afternoon. But be aware, that the drive can last quite long as the bus picks up and brings back each passenger to their respective destination. A little patience might be required!

17 ISLANDS The sub-district of Riung, located to the north of Bajawa, is famed for its beautiful coral gardens. The coast and the surrounding area of the town of Riung have become a national conservation area, and were even given the status of a national park and named Pulau Tujuhbelas, or ‘Seventeen Islands’. In fact, the national park consists of more than 20 small and larger

islands. The local people, though, have named the area ‘Riung Seventeen Islands’, a label that is easy to remember as it refers to the personification of a beautiful 17-year-old girl and also Indonesian Independence Day on the 17th of August. The national park area is inhabited by various exotic species, e.g. the Timor deer, hedgehogs, monkeys, ferrets, the Timor monitor lizard, marsupials, and partridges. The large variety of birds such as eagles, white herons, black storks, partridges etc, make the area a great spot for bird watching. Even a moderate-sized species of a Komodo dragon named Mbou is said to exist in some regions such as Torong Padang, where it has been spotted in particular seasons only. It has hardly ever been encountered by either the conservation management or tourists. The marine park status has been established to preserve the area’s underwater world. The Seventeen Islands area encompasses a rich coral-reef ecosystem where you can count up to 27 different species of coral. The Riung waters are home to plenty of exciting animals, ranging from marine mammals such as dolphins and whales to various colorful fish. The crystal-clear water makes it a perfect place for swimming, snorkeling, and underwater photography. The biggest island is the hilly Ontoloe, which is covered with short grass and a few trees, as well as fringed with mangroves. On the north coast of Ontoloe, you can observe the famous large fruit bats, called ‘flying foxes’, flying over the mangrove trees.

A visit to Kalong, the ‘Flying Fox Island’, gives you the opportunity to see these fascinating animals as they fly into the sunset. The island of Bampa Barat is a temporary home to several fishermen, who sometimes sell their catch of the day directly from the boat. If you plan to see the national park, you should also take some time for visiting Riung Village (Riung), as it offers you the possibility of unique cultural encounters. Lively celebrations of the Ngada people’s traditional hunting and boxing is just one part of their manifold cultural life.

Snorkeling & Diving Boat tours to the islands can be arranged from every hotel in town. There are plenty of water activities you can enjoy, like snorkeling, fishing or swimming in the crystal clear waters. The best areas for snorkeling can be found in Pulau Bukit Tiga, and near Pulau Mborong. You can rent the equipment in the representative office of Dinas Pariwisata Ngada or in hotels such as Pondok SVD Riung or Nirwana bungalows. However, despite the great potential of diving, there are no dive masters operating in this area yet. By using a speed boat or another vessel you can also enjoy a panorama of artistically formed island silhouettes. In Riung you can find a small number of accommodation options ranging from simple guesthouses to nice, mid-range cottages. There are some small restaurants, warung, and shops as well. ***

Every day many locals visit this site and tourists also feel that their trip to Bukittinggi is incomplete before visiting Jam Gadang. Jam Gadang has big clock on all four sides of the tower. Do not imagine a magnificent palaces like those in fairy tales. Palace of Bung Hatta had ample courtyard with two main buildings . The first building is large Gadang house typical of Minang people. Another building is an elongated shaped house. You could call this a mini palace . In front of and beside the complex there is a statue of Bung Hatta . The statue in front of the palace is made half-body only. While the one beside the complex, Bung Hatta statue was made in full body (more than 2 meters high).

Not far from the Palace of Bung Hatta , there lies a breathtaking Sianok Canyon. Anyone who comes must be enchanted with the nature of this green canyon.

Sawahlunto,

Transforming from Mining Town to Tourism Town

S

awahlunto is now offering its charms to tourists visiting the town. Visible traces of its glory during when it was still a coal mining town can be clearly seen there. The town was built by the Dutch about 123 years ago. It was established because of the finding of coal mine by Hendrik De Greve . The location of Sawahlunto at that time was very far in the inland of West Sumatra . Great quantity of coal in Sawahlunto has made this place an important city in Sumatra in the past . Reserves of “black gold “ in the large number had attracted the Dutch Government to invest 5.5 million guilders , including to build the Port Emma Haven , which now becomes Port Teluk Bayur in Padang . The goal of builting this port was to facilitate the export of mining products . As an old town , Sawahlunto is rich in old buildings. One of them is the first power plant in Sawahlunto, which was built in 1894. It now becomes the Nurul Iman Great Mosque . Just below the mosque , there is a bunker that was once used as a place to assemble weapons , mortars , and hand grenades . Chimney Termal Power Plant as high as 80 feet is also still standing there. The chimney now serves as a minaret. Another old building is the magnificent PTBA

- UPO mining office building with its large yard . Dutch colonial -style building was built in 1916 under the name of Ombilin Meinen and serves as the office of the mining until now. Just 200 meters away , there is a Cultural Centre building , which was built in 1910 . It used to be a meeting hall by the name of “ Gluck Auf “ . Here the colonial officials gathered, danced , sang , and enjoyed a drink . Now it is used as a place for art and painting exhibition . The glory of Sawahlunto coal mining can also be seen in the silo building that still stands in Saringan area. The silo, which has the shape of three large cylinders serves as hoarders of coal that has been cleaned and ready to be transported to the Port of Teluk Bayur . Sawahlunto train station now functions as a Railway Museum. Coal train had stopped operating for almost 10 years along with the depletion of coal reserves in Sawahlunto. Now, it is the home for “ Mak Itam “ , a steam locomotive for tourists . This is a rare steam train in the world. There are only five steam train left. When visiting Sawahlunto, do not forget to visit the first coal mine pit in Sawahlunto . The pit was built in 1896 by “ the chain people “ ( forced labor ) led by a foreman named Suro . Mine tunnels are restored and used as a coal mining museum . This tunnel is hundreds of

meters long , but so far only 186 meter has been refurbished , cleaned , and given the air blower to add more air to the tunnel. Visitors can get into it and feel the atmosphere of the former coal mining hallway . Former mine tunnel is very comfortable , and safe , because there is air flow from the blower and equipped with surveillance cameras ( CCTV ) that monitored by the officers in the Info Box building. Pit width is two meters with a height of two meters . The tunnel used to be used to transport coal from mining under Sawahlunto . The black walls look shiny because they contain super -quality coal , which is 6,000 to 7,000 calories . Before 1930 , the Dutch closed this hole due to the position of the mining pit, which was too close to Lunto River , which resulted in the swift water seepage . Explore the Museum of Gudang Ransum. There we can see the atmosphere at the time of mining peiord from hundreds of black and white photographs hanging on the wall . Old photographs that describe the atmosphere at the time of coal mining by the Dutch, miners , and the chain people. Food Ration Warehouse was founded in 1918 and served as a common kitchen for the mine workers and hospital in Sawahlunto, which amounted to thousands of people . The building consists of a common

kitchen , ice warehouse , raw food warehouse, rice barn , smoke towers , and power strom. There are three large buildings , two of which serve as a ration warehouse or a place to eat for thousands of mine workers, including the chained people . Mine workers came from various regions in Java , Sulawesi and Kalimantan . In this museum , there are several tombstones of chained people inscribed with numbers only. Another building serves as a common kitchen . Every day in those days, nearly 4,000 kilograms of rice were cooked. The cooking system also used steam pressure channeled through large pipes under the kitchen . Cookware used consisted of large pots. Golden era of coal mining and tragedy of the chained workers ( forced labor ) in Sawahlunto is preserved well by Sawahlunto city government . Sawahlunto Mayor Amran Nur , in the last ten years has been transforming “ junk “ relics of the former mining town into a living museum for historical tourism. “ Sawahlunto now becomes a cozy little town where travelers can see the traces of the coal mining town. According to Amran , Sawahlunto is being proposed to UNESCO to be a world heritage city . Sawahlunto also has already set to be one of the best old cities in Indonesia , “ said Amran Nur . ( * )

Exploring Anai Valley to Pagaruyung Palace

I

f you’re in the city of Padang in West Sumatera and visit the city of Bukittinggi , spend your time to stop by at several attractions on the trip. One of them is Anai Valley waterfall, which is located on the road side that connects Padang and Bukittinggi . The waterfall is included in the conservation area of Anai Valley. The water of the waterfall comes from Mount Singgalang . Clear water continues to flow down the hills to the slopes , and continues flowing past the Anai Valley up to the nature reserve on the edge of a steep cliff . Waterfalls flow into the valley floor which has a height of about 50 meters and then formed crater, so that the water drops rapidly one after another and splashing water mist . After enjoying the beauty of Anai Valley Waterfall you can continue the journey to the Pagaruyung Palace located at Nagari Pagaruyung of Tanjung Emas District with a distance of about 5 kilometers from Batusanggkar . On the way to the Pagaruyung Palace,we will pass some historical heritages such as Batu Batikam and Batu Basurek. Batikam stone is a stone with a hole resulted from dagger stab of

Datuak Parpatiah Nan Sabatang . The hole in the middle of this stone showed how powerful Datuak Partatiah Nan Sabatang was. While Batu Basurek is an inscription of the Pagaruyung kingdom during the reign of King Adityawarman. Basurek stone is also found in other areas , namely in Kubu Rajo Nagari Lima, Lima Kaum District and in the Koto Tangah Nagari Pagaruyung, District of Tanjung Emas . It is estimated that this inscription was written in the 1300s , using the letters in the Old Javanese Sanskrit . The inscription tells the story of King Adityawarman as generous and compassionate ruler. After passing two historic relics, you will arrive at the Pagarayung Palace. The palace is a mainstay attraction in Tanah Datar district. Having Mount Young as the background, the palace has the shape of traditional Minang house, Rumah Gadang. The building consists of 11 gonjong , 72 posts, and 3 floors . The exterior and interior is equipped with a variety of carvings. Each shape and color engraved have different Minangkabau philosophy of history and culture . Pagaruyung palace is

among the icons of West Sumatra tourism . Almost every travel agency in the province always include this palace in the package they offered. So it is not surprising that there are foreign tourists who come to visit to see the splendor of the Pagaruyung Palace. Pagaruyung palace itself is actually a replica of the Palace of Rajo Alam Pagaruyuang burned by the Dutch in 1804 and rebuilt in 1976. On February 27, 2007 Pagaruyung Palace burned by lightning strikes and still going through the stages of development and refinement . The palace can be visited by tourists although it has not been officially opened.( * )

Your Pleasure Is Our Treasure

amuel Walton was an American businessman and entrepreneur, best known for founding the big, famous chain Wal-Mart Stores. Once he said, “There is only one boss; the customer. And they can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else.” The red line taken from those words is that customer is the most important element of any businesses. THE 1O1 Bali Legian values its customers at its best. The Smart Stylish Hospitality Program has been conducted since the beginning of 2012, by rewarding the direct bookers with 1O1 Experience Benefits which allows customers to enjoy special privilege as an appreciation for them for becoming the repeating guests, as well as booking directly to THE 1O1 Bali Legian. This program has been well running for more than one year, along with several customer loyalty programs conducted by THE 1O1 Bali Legian. As a place to stay for those who are young at heart, THE 1O1 Bali Legian commemorates the Indonesia National Customer Day in a very funky way. THE 1O1 Bali Legian shows the appreciation to its guests by having party together. As the Sky Pool Party is regularly held every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday; and the Indonesia National Customer Day falls every 4 September, hence all the management members of the Smart Stylish Team of THE 1O1 Bali Legian take the opportunity on Wednesday, 4 September 2013 to celebrate it with the guests. The Marathon Shots, which is the signature action of THE 1O1 Bali Legian, will mark the event by delivering cocktail shot to the guests in a marathon way; and the loyal guests will be granted by free signature cocktails. This having fun together moment will wind up with photo taking session together with all the guests. Oh yes, these people loves being photographed! THE 1O1 Bali Legian would like to make known openly that the Smart Stylish Experience concept that has been implemented during its 2 years of operations is the way to show to its guests that “Your pleasure is our treasure”.

Bali Hotels Association Joins International Coastal Cleanup

B

ali Hotels Association (BHA) in conjunction with Anantara Seminyak Resort & Spa, Bali proudly instigated the International Coastal Cleanup campaign by clearing debris along Seminyak Beach. BHA members were encouraged to participate and be part of the solution to help protect this popular coastal strip. Cleanups alone can’t solve this pollution problem. Nevertheless, the Ocean Trash Index provides a snapshot of what’s polluting our oceans so we can work to prevent specific items from reaching the water in the first place. BHA members together with Anantara Seminyak Resort & Spa, Bali, Rotary Club Seminyak, media representatives and a numbers of local schools gathered at 7am to clean the beach for one hour.

The “Green Army” covered a distance of 2 kilometres picking up all kinds of rubbish along the way. Plastic bags, containers, cutlery, cans, cigarettes and household waste as well as abandoned shoes and fishing debris were just some of the 7,565 items collected. The total trash haul ended up weighing in at over 142,6 kilograms. “Bali Hotel Associations is extremely proud to take part in this eco-friendly initiative. It is directly in line with our objective, which is to continuously strive to find ways to support programs that protect the environment,” commented Alessandro Migliore, Chairman of the Bali Hotels Association. We hope that our actions will encourage locals and tourists alike to take note and assume responsibility for the daily consumption of one-time products that effectively

contribute to the ocean trash problem. We would very much like to start a ripple effect that gets everyone thinking about this issue,” continues Alessandro.*** The International Coastal Cleaning campaign involved members of BHA; Anantara Seminyak Bali Resort & Spa, Anantara Vacation Club Seminyak Bali, The Oberoi Bali, The Royal Beach Seminyak Bali, The Breezes Bali Resort & Spa, Harris Resort Kuta Beach – Bali, SDN 1Seminyak, SDN 2 Seminyak, and Rotary Club Seminyak. Some of the members like Grand Nikko Bali, Mercure Bali Nusa Dua, Maya Ubud Resort & Spa as well as Aerowisata SANUR BEACH HOTEL – Bali also participate by cleaning up beaches in different locations.

The Mangrove Reforestation Project is supported by Bali Regional Mangrove Management Centre Region 1 and in line with Ministry of Forestry program. The role of mangroves is to provide coastal protection against the actions of waves, wind and water. As widely reported, extensive areas of mangroves can help reduce the loss of life and damage caused by tsunamis by taking the first brunt of the impact and by dissipating the energy of the wave as it passes through the mangrove area. “Suwung is the perfect location for our program as it is located only ± 8 kilometers from EDEN Hotel Kuta Bali. This initiative is a start of many more exciting projects as we try to contribute to the Island”, said Sebastien Menesguen, General Manager of EDEN Hotel Kuta Bali.
