CONTENTS
Picking up speed It’s been a while since we left 2013 behind us and we’ve already made it about halfway through 2014. But before we detail all the exciting things that will happen this year, I thought I’d take the opportunity to offer a brief recap of last year. For the forest industry as a whole, 2013 was a relatively poor year. For us, on the other hand, 2013 was a relatively good year in which we increased our market shares and our sales. Komatsu’s customer base quite simply grew at a time when many of our competitors were struggling. But we’re not satisfied with that. Looking forward, I believe 2014 can be at least as good, if not better. There are many reasons for our optimistic view of the future. Broadly outlining the situation, we see, for example, pulp in Europe and sawn wood products in Finland commanding increasing prices. What’s more, new home construction in the USA has really picked up. After several poor years, we also see a general upward trend in demand for machines for the cut-tolength method. This is important for our strong core markets in Europe. In other words, things are generally looking good for our industry.
But perhaps an even more important reason for my optimism is that we’re now better equipped than ever with regard to our product range. In this issue of Just Forest, you can read about our newest machine, the Komatsu 835 forwarder. With this latest addition, in a short time we’ve launched five brand new forwarders and as such can boast the industry’s most modern forwarder range. I’d also like to claim that we can offer a broad and very modern lineup of heads for all types of harvesting. What’s more, you’ll soon notice that our product development doesn’t stop there. Another reason for my positive outlook is our focus on the customer’s entire business. Our fleet management system, MaxiFleet, is one example where customers in Germany, Brazil, and Sweden have discovered how favorably the system can impact profitability. And I believe, many more markets will follow suit. Finally, I’d like to remind you all to keep your eyes and ears open this fall. That way you won’t risk missing something very special! Happy reading!

KOMATSU 835
An uncompromising thinning expert Easy on the forest, nimble, productive, and reliable. All this makes the Komatsu 835 a real expert at thinning. THE KOMATSU 835 is a brand new
12-ton (11-tonne) forwarder that delivers maximum production with minimum environmental impact, even on the most grueling thinning assignments. There are several reasons for this. One is the highest torque in its class and high traction relative to total weight. These, combined with a strong engine, high load capacity, and the crane’s slewing torque and reach, make the Komatsu 835 effective on any thinning assignment. Another reason is that the Komatsu 835 has very little impact on standing trees and the forest floor. The low weight, compact size, and high ground clearance are important factors that minimize tree and ground damage. Yet another factor that makes the Komatsu 835 nimble and easy on the environment is the new weight-optimized frame system, which offers exceptional ground clearance, while wide rear tracks ensure low ground pressure. The Komatsu 835 is also a class forerunner when it comes to engine technology. The new 4-cylinder engine’s fuel injection and emission control technology make it the first forwarder in its class to fulfill the requirements of EU Stage IV and EPA Tier 4 Final. This ensures world-leading emission reductions while retaining high power output and good fuel economy. The operator environment is also an important aspect of productivity. The Komatsu 835 has a spacious cab that creates the ideal ergonomic work 4 JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2014
environment, favoring operator productivity and long-term health. Both upward and downward visibility are good, much due to the machine’s short nose. The Comfort Ride cab suspension option, which effectively reduces knocks and jolts, ensures cab comfort that’s easy on the operator even after many hours at the controls. The interior has many new features, including ergonomic hand controls in the shape of the new Comfort Controls. The Komatsu 835 also has a new powerful crane with a long reach and especially high slewing torque, enhancing performance in steep terrain. LOAD CAPACITY is a full 12 tons (11
tonnes) and the bunk offers great flexibility. One example is the FlexGate, which moves up and down if the crane strikes it. This is a patented solution that is already appreciated by many operators. Aside from greater protection, FlexGate also provides better visibility. The bunk, optimized for thinning, can also be fitted with the FlexBunk option, which provides hydraulic height-adjustable supports. The standard Komatsu 835 is a wellequipped forwarder, and yet there are many additional options available. The ProTec crane tip solution, soft-seal ORFS couplings, and FlexGate are examples of standard equipment. Examples of options include a bogie lift, front blade, hood protection, tilt column for the crane, and the MaxiFleet fleet management system.

KOMATSU 835
KOMATSU 835 – TOP The new Komatsu 835 is designed to be top of the class in every area. The chassis, the powertrain, the engine, the cab, and – not least – the completely new bunk make this new 12-ton (11-tonne) machine a true thinning expert.
BUNK The bunk on the Komatsu 835 has a completely new system called FlexBunk, which improves the ease and convenience of thinning in tight stands. FlexBunk has optional hydraulic height-adjustable supports. Low supports provide a lower lifting height for the crane, speed crane operation, and make it easier to avoid collisions with standing trees. The supports are easily 6 JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2014
controlled with a simple press of a button on the hand control. FlexBunk also offers fixed supports optimized for a tire width of 23.6” (600 mm) or 28” (710 mm). All types of support have a 2-degree inward lean to reduce the risk of the supports colliding with trees and the fixed supports are also available with a 5-degree lean. Another interesting new feature of the
bunk is the flexible gate, FlexGate, based on a patented design. The FlexGate flexes out of the way when making contact with the crane, protecting both the gate and the crane, and as such the gate could be designed to offer much better visibility from the cab to the bunk. The external storage boxes on the frame and bunks are also new.
OF THE CLASS
The new cab is spacious and offers a high-performance and ergonomic operator environment with good visibility and low noise levels.
The buttons have been refined to make identification by touch even easier.
The Komatsu 835 uses the MaxiXplorer 3.1 control system. MaxiFleet is available as an option.
The new forwarder features FlexBunk, with height-adjustable supports, and FlexGate, the flexible gate.
THE CAB The cab of the Komatsu 835 offers a roomy interior in all directions. The interior volume of the cab has been increased by 21 percent when compared to the preceding model. With larger windows throughout the cab, visibility is very good in every direction. As the cab is taller and the design has been refined, even upward visibility has been improved considerably by, for ex-
ample, moving the side supports back and refining their design. The Komatsu 835 has an ergonomicallydesigned seat that is easily adjusted for the most comfortable work position and can be locked at any angle in the range 0-220 degrees. To increase comfort even further, the cab now has improved – and increased – storage spaces with thoughtful placement
and improved utilization. A smart radio with, for example, Bluetooth and handsfree functionality is a popular comfort. Now it’s easy to wirelessly connect a smartphone to the radio in order, for example, to stream music or audio books. If the phone rings, the radio automatically fades so the operator can answer. Everything to stay focused on operating the machine. JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2014 7

The new, powerful E3 Power engine both reduces emissions and optimizes fuel economy.
THE CHASSIS
THE POWERTRAIN
The Komatsu 835 has a new weightoptimized frame system that in combination with the option for extra wide tracks ensures low ground impact. A new integrated frame design means that the frames and axles interact better to distribute the forces created by the load and the terrain. Another new feature is that the underside
Power output
of the frame is now boat-shaped to improve mobility in difficult terrain. The boat shape prevents the forwarder from catching on high rocks and stumps, allowing it to simply glide over them. High-tensile steel is used for the deflective profile on the underside to ensure durability in the face of high loads.

The powertrain on the Komatsu 835 automatically adjusts the traction and provides the highest torque at low engine speeds. The operator can adjust the continuously variable speed range for both high and low gear without stopping the machine and the system automatically adjusts to changes in system automatically adjusts to changes due to terrain, obstacles, inclines, and crane loads. In order to better utilize the diesel engine’s performance and to improve the new forwarder’s handling in steep terrain, the transmission can further increase traction when the going gets tough and speed drops.
THE ENGINE The Komatsu 835 has an effective and environmentally-friendly engine. The new 4-cylinder engine features fuel injection and emission control technology that make the Komatsu 835 and the Komatsu 845 the first forwarders in their class to fulfill the requirements of EU Stage IV and EPA Tier 4 Final. The engine is an Agco Power Diesel 4.9 liter diesel with a maximum power output of 170 hp (127 kW) and generates a maximum torque of 553 lbf-ft (750 Nm).
DON’T BE AFRAID OF A SLIGHTLY LARGER FORWARDER No machine owner wants to contribute to ground damage. As such, many focus on machine weight when buying a new forwarder. But things aren’t that simple. There are many interlinked factors to consider when deciding on the best compromise between economics and minimal impact on the forest floor. NATURALLY, WE WANT A FORWARDER TO CAUSE as little
ground damage as possible. But what is it that actually causes ground damage and how do you reduce a machine’s impact without compromising productivity? Basically, it’s about not creating an unnecessarily heavy forwarder while ensuring it is dimensioned to withstand stress and strain. This brings us to machine weight. In light of this, Komatsu Forest applies designs and component selections optimized in terms and reliability and weight for each size class across the entire product range. The ground pressure generated by a forwarder’s machine weight depends on how this weight is distributed. To begin with, we have to find as even a distribution as possible between the forwarder’s front and rear sections. Then we have to distribute the weight over as large a contact area as possible to reduce ground pressure. The machine’s width comes into play here, but more important is the contact area of tires and tracks. There are limits to track length as tracks that are too long will scrape the ground when turning. ANOTHER FACTOR to consider when looking at ground damage
is the number of trips the forwarder must complete to forward the timber from the forest. With a larger average load and fewer trips, wear on the forest floor is reduced significantly. Ground damage is affected not only by the machine. Just as important is how operators plan their work. Such as where to drive with consideration for ground conditions. There are even GIS systems that can aid the operator in choosing the right route depending on ground conditions.
MACHINE WIDTH A machine with wider wheels and tracks distributes weight over a larger area, resulting in lower ground pressure, but there are limits to total machine width, set primarily by the maximum strip road width and traffic regulations.
GROUND CONTACT AREA
TRACK WIDTH
The total area of the wheels and the tracks comprises an important factor, and a large area can mean that a larger machine has less ground impact than a smaller machine. On the other hand, bogies and tracks cannot be made so long that they dig into the ground when the machine turns.
To enable maximum track width, the bunks have been adapted to provide sufficient space.

”I’VE USED THE Komatsu 890 for a long
time and the new Komatsu 895 is clearly an improvement. The entire machine feels solid, stable, and strong. You can tell that it’s a forwarder built from the ground up to handle a 22-ton (20-tonne) load. The cab suspension is also a real improvement. Once my operators had used cab suspension for a couple of days, they really didn’t want to work without it.” Peter Bystedt, Sweden

”I’M MIGHTILY IMPRESSED with the engine power of my 855.1. The new ECO mode is very effective. The powertrain is very powerful, especially in difficult conditions. Visibility from the cab while working is just fantastic! It’s a very reliable machine; there are no downsides to it.” Johann Markowitsch, Austria
”IT MEETS ALL my expectations for a forwarder in this class. We’ve driven up, down, and across steep inclines and I find driving performance good. It’s a powerful machine that continues pulling up long inclines without the need to floor the pedal. And I must say that visibility is very good all around and the cab interior feels bigger.” Daniel Englund, Sweden
”WE’VE REPLACED a Komatsu 840.4 with a new Komatsu 865 as we
needed greater load capacity. The size of the bunks on the 865 enable us to carry an average of 30 percent more timber per load compared to the 840.4 without using more fuel. I can probably safely say that we consume a little less fuel than before. This is our fourth consecutive Komatsu forwarder and all of them have been productive and reliable. We’ve always liked how they navigate the terrain and the Komatsu 865 is no exception. It’s very nimble and causes a minimum of ground damage, which is important where we work.” Alistair Edmondson, England

Freed from back and neck problems Cab comfort and the work environment in forest machines have seen a great deal of development over the years, which has resulted in fewer problems due to vibrations, shaking, and jolts. Komatsu Comfort Ride has taken cab comfort to new heights. DESPITE GREAT ADVANCES in
cab comfort, there are still machine operators who after many years working in the forest experience problems. Thord Arvidsson is a Swedish forest machine contractor who has periodically experienced problems with his neck and shoulders for many years. He’s operated forest machines ever since the 1970s and has had his own contracting company since 1995. Over the years, he’s operated most brands of forest machine. “Regardless of which forwarder I’ve operated, over the years I’ve suffered with both my neck and my shoulders. They’ve always been especially painful when the forwarder
This is the first time I haven’t had any pain in my neck or shoulders when operating a forwarder.
12 JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2014
slides off a rock or stump and bottoms out. Then the pain strikes suddenly, shooting all the way up to the back of my head,” Thord explains. This past fall, Thord bought a new forwarder, a Komatsu 855, with Komatsu Comfort Ride cab suspension. “This is the first time I haven’t had any pain in my neck or shoulders when operating a forwarder,” he says. “The cab suspension means no more bottoming out and I can sit more relaxed in the cab.” Repetitive strain injuries affecting the back, shoulders, and neck are problems that result in the longest periods of sick leave if they become chronic injuries. “Constant and static muscle tension hampers blood circulation and the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles. Aches and pains
are the body’s signals that a change needs to be made,” explains Per Normark, a naprapath with extensive experience of diagnosing and treating all kinds of occupational injuries. Ergonomics play an important role in product development. The hydraulic cab suspension of Komatsu Comfort Ride is the latest example of the continual development work to improve cab ergonomics. Komatsu Comfort Ride comprises four gas cylinders, one under each corner of the cab, to attain maximum benefit from the suspension function. Moreover, the cylinders’ ±4” (100 mm) of travel enables shocks to be absorbed and cab movements to be softened in an effective manner. Another popular advantage is that the cab can be raised to the top position when unloading, providing much better visibility.
Two operators from Norway who’ve tested KOMATSU COMFORT RIDE: TOM ERIK WAS IMPRESSED TOM ERIK PRESTHAUG HAS WORKED as a forwarder
operator at Tor Jörgen Benterud AS for 19 years. Testing the Komatsu Comfort Ride cab suspension on a Komatsu 895, he was truly impressed. “While we don’t need such a large forwarder, I have to say that the cab suspension felt great. The damping is very comfortable and cab suspension is definitely something I would like on the next forwarder I operate,” says Tom Erik.
Thord Arvidsson has suffered from neck and shoulder issues for a long time. Since he started operating a forwarder with Komatsu Comfort Ride cab suspension, his problems have cleared up.
KNUT TORE NEVER HESITATED
Operator comfort is improved because damped cab suspension effectively reduces the vibrations and bumps caused by uneven terrain and large rocks and tree stumps.
ALTHOUGH KNUT TORE SLÅTTEN in Norway is only 19 years old, he’s already a self-employed contractor. When planning to buy his first machine, there was no hesitation. “Having operated a Komatsu 855 with Komatsu Comfort Ride cab suspension for about a year, there was never any doubt in my mind that I wanted a forwarder with cab suspension for my own company,” he says. Knut Tore grew up around forest machines. Despite his young age, he’s spent several years operating both forwarders and harvesters for his father Håkon’s company. Håkon Slåtten has used Komatsu machines for many years.

Learn more about Komatsu Forest history.
– 10 years in the forest This year, it’s been ten years since the international Komatsu group took ownership and formed Komatsu Forest. In an increasingly international industry, the combination of the heritage of Scandinavian forest expertise and the effective Japanese industrial tradition has proven to be a truly successful concept. SWEDISH FOREST MACHINES have been working in the forests
for more than 50 years. Back in the early 1960s, we saw the launch of the first forest machine developed by the companies that specialized in promoting mechanized forestry. Over the next few decades, a Nordic forest machine industry evolved, accumulating extensive knowledge about how to effectively pursue mechanized forestry. In those days, the market essentially comprised Sweden and Finland. However, with an increasingly global market and increased internationalization, several major international companies have chosen to set up operations in the industry. Ten years ago, Komatsu Ltd, the world’s second largest manufacturer of mining and construction machines, decided to buy into the industry. The merger of the Scandinavian heritage (Valmet) – with its long-term commitment to the forest, great understanding of the conditions faced by contractors, and genuine interest in technical development – with the extensive Japanese experience of effective
quality assurance work at every step and continual improvements to products and work methods has been a success. “Forestry specialization, an understanding of the situation faced by machine owners, and an interest in technical development have been readily adopted by the owners,” says Toshio Miyake, who was CEO for seven of the ten years with Komatsu. Product development has also been greatly accelerated in recent years. Completely new machines, such as the Komatsu 895, 865, 855.1, and 845 forwarders, have seen the light of day in the last year alone, along with a number of new harvesting heads, including the Komatsu 365.1, 398, C93, C144, and S132 heads. “This product development builds on the extensive technical know-how accumulated in the Nordic region over many decades. This means we continually develop products that are better, more effective, and more profitable for our customers,” says Mr. Miyake, who handed over the reins to the company’s new CEO Mitsuru Ueno on April 1.
Red forest machines have been around for almost 50 years. Over the past ten years, Komatsu has successfully combined Nordic forestry expertise with modern Japanese industrial knowledge. 14 JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2014

NEW CRANE A new crane is now available for the Komatsu 931.1. The new crane is a 36’ (11 m) dual tele.
RIGHT MACHINE WEIGHT Every manufactured forwarder and harvester supplied by Komatsu Forest will be weighed individually to determine its weight. Weighing is conducted using a speciallybuilt truck scale before delivery from the plant in Umeå. The measured weight will be stamped on the identification plate and registered in the machine’s logbook. The weight information can be important, for example, in conjunction with trailer transport on roads when the exact weight is needed rather than a generic weight from a certificate of conformity.
CONSTANT CUT ON THE KOMATSU 370.2 The new Constant Cut saw unit has been introduced as standard on the Komatsu 370.2.
NEW CRANE SCALE MODEL FOR HARVESTERS The new ProTec Scale crane scale uses a modern strain gauge and wireless data transfer to weigh loads and offers very long battery life. ProTec Scale combines scale functionality in the crane tip with the ProTec concept’s protected hose routing. Naturally, new ProTec Scale is fully integrated with the MaxiXplorer control system.
EXTRA VALVE SECTION
NEW FEED ROLLER MOTORS OPTION FOR THE KOMATSU C93
An extra, plugged valve section is now available for harvesters. The extra section, which can be proportionally controlled, is on the chassis valve inside the front frame. It can be used to control hydraulic functions that are added to machines.
A new roller motors option is now available for the C93. The new option comprises 38 cu in (630 cc) outer feed roller motors and 24 cu in (400 cc) inner feed roller motors, producing a feed force of 2.8 tonf (25.3 kN). The existing option uses a 31 cu in (500 cc) outer feed roller motor and a 19 cu in (315 cc) inner feed roller motor, producing a feed force of 2.3 tonf (20.1 kN).
NEW SKID TIP
EXTRA GRAB HANDLE
The Komatsu C93 has a new option, a delimbing knife with a skid tip. The skid tip enables the head to more easily follow crooked stems without the vertical knife cutting into the wood.
NEW TIRES Komatsu Forest now offers a new tire model, the Nokian TRS2. This is a universal model suitable for use with or without tracks. The tires have a new refined tread pattern and can be used on forwarders and harvesters alike. The tires will initially be available for the 895.
Forwarder cabs are equipped with grab handles on the center posts to hold on to when driving over terrain. An extra grab handle is now available for the new forwarders. The extra grab handles are sturdy, mounted low for convenient and relaxed access, and are turned towards the bunk within easy reach of the operator when the seat is facing the bunk.

UAVS FIND WINDTHROWN TIMBER Komatsu Forest has been involved in testing UAVs to help clear windthrown timber more efficiently. With the aid of photos taken from UAVs, the harvester operator can navigate directly to each windthrown tree. IN THE FALL OF 2013, several severe
storms ravaged Scandinavia, causing much forest damage. One of these was the storm Hilde in Sweden, which resulted in more 18 JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2014
than 100 million cubic feet (3 million cubic meters) of windthrown forest. A large share comprised pine at the thinning stage, which entails large economic losses for the owners.
The total economic loss is estimated at about USD 75 million (SEK 0.5 billion). What’s more, windthrown timber is a breeding ground for parasites, and as such
With the aid of unmanned aerial vehicles, current photographs can be taken at low altitudes. The high-resolution aerial photos are imported to the harvester’s computer. The machine operator can then use the aerial photos in the GIS program to navigate, optimizing the chosen route.

windthrown timber must be cleared from the forest by law. The forest companies’ instructions to machine operators specify which plots need to be cleared, but these instructions do not detail the exact locations of the windthrown trees. This means the machines have to be driven along all the strip roads looking for windthrown timber. As a result, such clearing work is much more expensive than conventional harvesting. In one project, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and forest company SCA Skog are looking at the possibility of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or drones) for improved planning when

clearing windthrown forest. With the aid of UAVs, current photographs can be taken at low altitudes. These aerial photos are then used to create comprehensive photographic mosaics of the windthrown forest stands. The highresolution aerial photos are then geotagged (assigned map coordinates) and imported to the harvester’s computer. The machine operator can then use the aerial photos in the GIS program to navigate, optimizing the chosen route to the areas with windthrown forest plots. Komatsu Forest’s role in the project is to test whether the machine’s computer can handle the relatively large aerial
photographs, and whether the screen resolution is sufficiently high to distinguish windthrown forest. Field tests in the forest were conducted using a Komatsu 901.4. The results show economic benefits from improved planning. Another result of the fact that the machine can work more effectively is that the distance the forest machine needs to travel is reduced, which means less environmental impact. With better planning and thereby increased efficiency, an existing forest machine lineup can cover more forest areas before the stands are damaged by parasites and timber quality and prices are impacted. company Metsä-Veke Oy in Kuortti, located about 120 miles northeast of Helsinki, between Lahti and Mikkeki, in southern Finland. After about 1,300 operating hours with the Komatsu C93, he has enough experience with the head to offer a qualified opinion. “The Komatsu C93 is perfectly suited to my assignments and I only have praise for this head,” says Mika. Mika’s principal client is a forest management company with customer plots throughout southern Finland. This means that his harvester, a Komatsu 911.5, and the head have to cope with everything from initial thinning to final logging. The size of the trees varies a great deal, from very small up to 25 cu ft (0.7 m3). At its core, the Komatsu C93 is based
on well-proven technology that has resulted in high reliability and effective production. A few of the new features on the Komatsu C93 include an increased tilt angle, which is now 40 degrees, to provide a fast feed start. THE HEAD’S SAW UNIT, saw motor, and bar mount have also been refined with additions such as Constant Cut, which provides more consistent cutting speed for the chain by automatically adjusting the feed speed to the chain’s felling capacity. The saw unit keeps consistent speed, an optimized 130 feet per second (40 m/s), throughout the entire cutting cycle. “I find the saw unit very fast, the large tilt angle makes work easier, and the new frame roller placement really helps feed crooked trees,” Mika explains.

KOMATSU C202E
NEW HEAD FOR DEMANDING LOGGING Large, high quality, and highly productive. The new Komatsu C202E has everything to cope with the most demanding logging assignments.
THE KOMATSU C202E is dimen-
sioned and designed for tracked machines and naturally features a barking function. E signifies barking, making the head ideal for logging hardwood. The most challenging logging assignments demand hard-wearing, robust, and durable harvesting heads. The new Komatsu C202E builds on the extensive experience gained from the Komatsu 370E, and its primary characteristics are high quality and extreme durability. This guarantees high uptime. The head’s frame and two saw units are sturdy, the hood mounts are stable, and the hydraulics are reliable. To provide concrete examples, the saw unit has new sensors that increase bar control accuracy and a sealed bearing housing for increased service life. Other improvements to the saw units include an updated bar clamp and an improved tensioner for the top saw. These simplify service, increase 22 JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2014
service life, and better stabilize chain tensioning. The lubrication pump has been refined to improve its functionality and simplify service while the pins for the feed roller arms and delimbing knives have been replaced with new expander pins that also increase service life. As for the hydraulics, the cylinders have more hard-wearing piston rods while the knife cylinder has a new design for increased durability. All in all, this means a robust and hard-wearing head offering high reliability, a long service life, and simple service. The Komatsu C202E is also equipped with a damping function when tilting upwards to reduce loads on the head’s frame and felling link. ANOTHER ADVANTAGE of the new

Great interest in The new heads have attracted much interest. In Norway, no fewer than 150 people gathered to see a few of the latest additions to the harvesting head series. And many of them were impressed. Just Forest took the opportunity to speak to a few contractors in attendance. FOREST MACHINE COMPANY Bröderna Hagensborg
AS has recently acquired a new Komatsu 931.1 with a Komatsu C144 harvesting head. Anders Hagensborg shares his first impressions after just three days of operation. “The Constant Cut function ensures the same cutting speed through the entire stem, regardless of diameter. What’s more, this new function also reduces the risk of the chain breaking.” Having used the new machine and head for just three days, Anders can happily conclude that the combination fulfills his expectations. “With three Komatsu harvesters in operation, we’re familiar with different heads. Even after such a short time using the Komatsu C144, I’ve seen good results immediately. The best aspects are the increased traction and considerably reduced friction. The C144 makes effective use of the harvester’s capacity. In

the end, it’s all about improving energy efficiency throughout the entire process, and we’ll be monitoring this carefully from now on,” says Anders. CONTRACTOR SVERRE BERGLI has two new Komatsu harvesters. A Komatsu 901TX.1 with a Komatsu C93 harvesting head and a new Komatsu 931.1 with a Komatsu 365.1. Operator Kjetil Røste uses the machine equipped with the Komatsu C93 every day. “The entire processing chain, from engagement to cutting, is faster, although I can’t put my finger on why exactly. It feels as though the head is really well balanced,” says Kjetil. Sverre is also pleased with his new Komatsu 365.1. “It’s a very versatile head with good stem holding, which ensures a good flow throughout the entire work process,” says Sverre.

GERMANY
MAXIFLEET
– comprehensive data overview Wolfgang Neuhäuser from Germany has used the web-based MaxiFleet system to manage his fleet since September 2013. He appreciates the many options the system provides. SOUTH-GERMAN forest company Neuhäuser Forstbetrieb has been in business since 1991. Wolfgang Neuhäuser offers everything from planting through final logging to logistics management. Keeping things on schedule is essential if the entire logging chain is to progress smoothly and the harvested timber is to be transported from the forest as quickly as possible. In practice, this means logging the area with forest machines, assigning the areas to be processed by handcutters using chainsaws, planning machine movements, and rapidly coordinating replanting. “Time is of the essence and must be used optimally – and I can save a great deal of time with this system,” says Wolfgang. He feels that MaxiFleet offers a decisive advantage and as such has equipped both of his harvesters, a Valmet 931 and a Komatsu 911.5, with the system. Wolfgang explains that previously he was forced to transfer the harvesters’ production lists via a USB memory stick or by printing them from the machines. This was costly and time-consuming as he was forced to drive back and forward to the machines by car or to transfer the data some other way. MaxiFleet makes this process much more convenient. The information is automatically transferred at regular intervals to a server without involving the operator. In addition to the hardware, a SIM card is also required. The user then has easy access to the information, which can be opened and processed using a computer at the office. An Internet connection is required for the transfer.
I can save a great deal of time with this system.
26 JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2014
“The operator can concentrate more on the actual work. I don’t need to call the operator to ask how things are going,” says Wolfgang, who most often takes a quick look via his tablet before he leaves home in the morning. “I do that quickly while tying my laces,” Wolfgang laughs, and in this way always has the latest information to hand. Naturally, the system also shows the location of each machine, along with its current fuel level. E-mails can be sent and received via the system as well. Wolfgang mainly uses this function to send and receive assignments that he receives in electronic format from his clients. ANOTHER MaxiFleet feature he appreciates is the remote maintenance. This function enables a technician to connect to the machine directly and aid the operator. “It minimizes costs as the technician doesn’t need to travel out to the machine unnecessarily. What’s more, it shortens response times as some problems can be resolved without travel time,” says Wolfgang. Wolfgang uses MaxiFleet even when he’s not in a machine or at the office, as it’s also available via smartphones. When work is to begin on a new forest stand, for example, he takes a quick look on his smartphone to see when he can expect a machine to be available. There’s even a neat function that operators appreciate. In the winter, a simple press of a button on a computer or a smartphone is all that’s needed to start the cab heater. In other words, starting work in a cold cab is a thing of the past.
Wolfgang Neuhäuser saves time with MaxiFleet.
