Ed's Note

I

t is Easter holidays, which conjures up images of happiness and good times. That’s why we decided to theme our March issue with everything happy! Now I know that not everyone can be happy and ‘little Miss Sunshine’ all the time. I am the last one to speak as I tend to get seriously grumpy when I am stressed or worried about something. The good news is there are a lot of things we can do to get back into that good vibe, because nobody WANTS to walk around with a dark cloud hanging over their heads. When you find someone you know who seems a little down that day, perhaps stop and give them a friendly smile hello and a hug. They might just need that little something special to make their day – and it doesn’t cost anything. It is very easy to slip into a ‘bad’ space when it feels like the world is crumbling around you, but you know what? You can change that too. It’s all about attitude and getting your mind busy with other things; for this too we have some great ideas in this issue. Being a couple of years older than you (don’t even ask, lol!), I have noticed that the amount of pressure placed on your shoulders with everything you have to cope with is a major task. Everything is so much faster and life is so much busier that it is quite normal to feel overwhelmed. We just want you to remember that every obstacle can be overcome. It takes speaking out about a problem to someone you trust, making a few life changes and keeping your mind busy with positive things. Remember that with TeenZone you are never alone. If you need any kind of assistance, then be sure to make contact with us on all the platforms on offer to you. Much love and hugs,

Hey TZ! So I was reading the Jan issue and I’ve read the request by Duciana for hip hop stars to be featured in the mag and think it’s an amazing idea. Maybe you guys can feature Rae Sremmurd in one of your future issues? I absolutely love them and would love if you guys put a poster of them and maybe song lyrics in the mag. Stay amazing. Alish Hello Alish, thank you for your mail. We found a stunning pic for an A3 pull-out poster of Rae Sremmurd for this issue. By the way, did you know that they created their name by reversing the words drummers’ ear? -

Hey TeenZone. I love your mag. I read through the Jan edition and came across the careers. I would like to know if you could do a special article about becoming a radiologist. Much love, thanks. Maxine Hi Maxine, great suggestion. Please see pages 46 and 47 in this issue where we spoke to a radiologist for our Get The Job section. If any other TeenZone readers have requests, please send them in to teenzone@ panorama.co.za, subject line ‘Careers’.

FABULOUS COMPETITIONS

Please, please, please can there be a Theo James poster in the next TeenZone? I love the mag so much! Thanks, Chelsey Hey Chelsey, please find a Theo James A3 pull-out poster inside -. Look out for the movie The Divergent Series: Allegiant releasing nationwide at cinemas on 18 March.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JUWAYRIYAH

HOTZONE lackheads usually develop if your skin produces too much oil. With the start of puberty, hormones in the body increase, leading to the production of the hormone by-product dihydrotestosterone (or DHT). This hormone causes the over-activity of the oil gland and plugging of the pore, resulting in a blackhead. While blackheads are present in just about any skin type, they vary in visibility and levels, and they are most likely to develop on people with very oily skin. If you use a lot of make-up and fail to cleanse your skin properly, the chance of blackhead formation is high. This is why frequent skin checks and deep skin cleansing are necessary to keep clogged pores from progressing into ugly black dots on your face. So keep this rule of thumb in mind: anything you put on your skin must be rinsed off thoroughly to avoid future problems. Good hygiene is key, but you must be careful about this rule as over-cleansing and over-scrubbing has also been found to be some of the causes of skin problems and irritation because R64.95 skin needs some oil to stay healthy. If you must extract blackheads yourself and there is no infection present, make sure you use sterile materials and do so in a clean environment. You can begin by steaming your skin for a while over a bowl of warm water to open the pores and make the extraction process less painful. Be careful not to burn the skin by using water that is too hot and don’t put your face too close to the source of steam. If you’re in doubt about your blackhead-removing abilities or if the area looks too sensitive to tinker with, visit a professional instead. Aestheticians (skincare therapists) and dermatologists offer deep-cleansing facial treatments designed to keep blackheads and whiteheads away. The cost of beauty is way too high to gamble with. It would be best to leave the dirty work to the experts.

CELEBZONE

Fantasy HOOK-UPS BY AMY SLOCOMBE

The beginning of the year started with so many new celeb romances that we thought we would create our own mix of celeb couples who we thought should get together.

Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran Now we know Tay is happily in love with Calvin, but we were just wondering, what if ... • The two have been friends since the first time they met, with Taylor writing his lyrics on her arm and hoping to collaborate with him. • Each of them let out their deepest emotions in their songs. They are easily two of the best lyricists of this generation. • Their Sweeran Instagram posts are absolutely adorable.

16 teenzonemagazine.co.za

Zendaya Coleman and Spencer Boldman • These two Disney co-stars have so much chemistry both on and off set. • Their joking tweets to each other can make your heart melt. • They are both admittedly obsessed with ice cream. • Spencer always sticks up for her when haters take a go at her.

CELEBZONE

Ross Lynch and Laura Marano • Ross said that the two of them were like a married couple and Laura couldn’t help but agree with him. • They are super flirty in photos. • They are so close that they act like a couple; they might as well make it official.

Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper • • • •

Jennifer describes Bradley as her work husband. He is always supportive of her. Their on-screen chemistry is out of this world. Glamour magazine UK gave them 82% on the love calculator.

Ashley Purdy and Taylor Momsen • Their sense of style is easily compatible. • Any rock fan knows that these two are the rock dream couple. • These two rockers share the same passion for their music (and eyeliner, LOL).

Jaden Smith and Rachel Crow • Rachel and Willow (Jaden’s sister) have been close friends since Rachel left The X Factor. • Rachel admitted that Jaden is her celebrity crush. • They just look adorable together. © Disney XD, Shutterstock, AAI/Fotostock

“... WE STARTED KISSING EACH OTHER IN HIS BED ...”

Q

© Shutterstock

I met this guy who asked for my number. I gave it to him because he was quite friendly and cute. After a few days I started developing strong feelings for him. He then started inviting me to visit him at his home. I thought to myself why not, because we’re not even dating so I’m sure there will be no problem with that. He mentioned that he is single and he has not been dating for quite a while because he feels that relationships are outdated and it brings problems, as he is the jealous type and is overprotective when dating someone. He asked if we could have a close relationship so I said it was fine. After a few hours we started kissing each other in his bed and he started touching me in sensitive places. I liked it a lot but suddenly I told him to stop and explained that I’m a virgin and I can't do it even if I wanted to. We then stopped and I went home. He asked me to call him when I get home which I did, but then he sounded like he didn't want to talk to me or something. Our conversation over the phone felt so awkward that I even asked him why he is not texting me on WhatsApp, but he said he was kind

of busy so I dropped the phone call. He no longer talks to me like he used to, so I don't know what to do? Was I being selfish on how I reacted? Not that kinda girl

*Letter has been edited

A

No, you were not being selfish. You had a boundary and you kept to it, well done! Let me ask you this, have you thought about that if you did sell yourself short and slept with him, that he would have treated you the same way? Once he got what he wanted you were of no concern to him any longer. Are you not glad you didn’t do that? What can you learn from this situation? Think about how much your life matters, how important your values and your picture of yourself is. I’m incredibly proud of you for having the courage to be principled.

“... MY FRIENDS HAVE BEEN HORRIBLE TO HIM ...”

Q

I am dating this guy who is a year older than me; I really like him and I know he also likes me. Since the day my boyfriend and I started dating, my friends have been horrible to him, more than usual. I begged them to stop but they won't

listen. I don't know if I must break up with him because my guy friends do not want to hang out with me anymore. What should I do? Guy trouble When I read your message I’m thinking your problem is with your friends not your boyfriend. It sounds like they don’t respect you. I hear that you have already addressed this with them and even so they continue to disregard your feelings. This is a tough one, but I think you need to address what friendship is with them and see if it means something different to you than it does to them. You may have to get a new group of guy friends who really care about your happiness.

A

“... IF I LEAVE HIM HE WILL COMMIT SUICIDE.”

Q

I am in a long-distance relationship with a guy and there's a problem. He is making huge changes to himself. He is getting piercings and his moods change too quickly. He is not the guy I fell in love with. The problem is I can’t leave him because he said I’m his happiness and if I leave him he will commit suicide. I am a softhearted girl and don't know what to do. I don't want him to hurt himself. Blackmailed girlfriend

A

I feel your pain. This is manipulation at its best. Reading this is going to be so hard for you but it’s one of those invaluable life lessons that will stand you in good stead for all relationships. Other people’s actions are not EVER determined by your actions. What I mean by that is you can’t make someone do or not do something. It isn’t true that a woman makes a man cheat on her by not giving him what he wants, neither is it true that your boyfriend will commit suicide if you break up with him. This IS NOT the kind of person you want to have a loving, meaningful relationship with. I would move on.

Male Point Of View “... IF SHE TRIES TO TELL HER FRIENDS SHE LIED, SHE KNOWS THEM AND KNOWS THAT THEY WON'T FORGIVE HER.”

Q

I have this friend who told her friends that she dated this guy, let’s call him ‘A’, so they all believed her. Now ‘A’ is flirting with one of her friends, ‘X’. My friend got scared that ‘X’ might ask ‘A’ about them – but there never was a ‘them’. She came to me and told me about her situation because she thinks ‘X’ likes ‘A’ back and she doesn't want her lie to be the reason they don't date. But if she tries to tell her friends she lied, she knows them and knows that they won't forgive her. They will also judge her and possibly tell other people about it, so ... what should she do? Cried wolf Well, in a situation like this I would say that it’s best to let the guilty party come forward and be honest and upfront about their actions. I know that's much easier said than done, but it will be better than having this come out from someone else. I would suggest they be honest with themselves and everyone else. Yes, there may be a bit of embarrassment, but it takes courage for someone to admit to their own mistakes, and it can even be commended in the long run. Perhaps your friend could approach ‘X’ and ‘A’ separately and fill them in on what has been going on, and take things from there. Essentially, there needs to be a starting point to all of this, and I would suggest that it begins with the two people concerned. At the same time it would be great if you could be there for them to show your support because they will need a shoulder to cry on. Perhaps you could have a chat with your friends if they decide to not forgive your friend, and help them understand that we all make mistakes. Your friend is very lucky to have you in her life, so be sure to stand by her in her time of need. RALPH MOODLEY

OAAR A OARABILE, RUSTENBURG 1. Racing cars and bungee jumping. 2. If I am having a really bad day I go to my sisters’ house and they know exactly how to make me smile and turn my day around.

AUUR AURELLIA, RUSTENBURG 1. Skydiving, bungee jumping and writing poetry. 2. Sleep and chocolate.

AQEELAH, A CAPE TOWN 1. A holiday activity that really got my adrenaline going was riding an ostrich. I thought I was about to have a heart attack! 2. If I’m having a bad day I immediately put on the movie Mamma Mia! No matter what, Mamma Mia! always works!

TAA TAMMY, JOHANNESBURG 1. Spending time with family. 2. Thinking of One Direction in South Africa or talking to my friends.

BOON O BONNITA, ALBERTON 1. A trip to Cape Town and a day at Ratanga Junction. The best ride would be the Monkey Falls! 2. A day at the beach or at the pool with your favourite songs on replay.

CHHA CHANTE, PORT ELIZABETH 1. Climbing a mountain and going on the super tube a few times. 2. Spending time with my family and all my pets.

NNALEDI, NA A WITBANK 1. Definitely swimming. At a time like this where I stay it gets really hot, like 35 to 45 degrees. The hotter it gets the sleepier most people become. Swimming always wakes me up and gets me going. I always feel refreshed after swimming. 2. Well, I’m a Directioner so anytime I feel sad or just frustrated with my day or any situation, my first instinct is to watch One Direction videos. That always makes me forget about what happened the entire day. Watching two to three videos immediately makes my mood happier and more jumpy.

BILQEES, CAPE TOWN BILL 1. Hiking gets my adrenaline going because it’s something that requires lots of energy and you need to be really careful. It’s one of the most fun ways of getting fit and it’s a really great experience if you do it with friends. And the thrill of climbing up rocks makes you feel like Spider-Man, haha. 2. I’d probably call my friend since she lives opposite me and we’d have a girls’ day. We’d watch movies, talk about life and I’d end up giving her advice. We’d also make lots of plans together with the rest of our squad and I’d end off really excited for the rest of the holidays.

Lif tYour Spirit

If you have made the decision to start improving your life by increasing your happiness status, then one of the first steps you need to take is to get started. Here is our list of 10 fabulously fun things to kick you off ...

1

Have a film festival

Invite some friends over and ask each of them to bring one of their favourite DVDs. Make some super snacks, and spend a lazy evening watching movies together. Be sure to include a horror and a tear-jerker that you can all enjoy together.

2

Do some amateur stargazing

3

Go geocaching

Go outside on a clear evening, preferably away from city lights, and look up at the sky. Use a free app such as SkyView to know what you’re looking at. Spread out some blankets on the ground, lay flat on your back, stare upwards, and realise how magnificent the universe is around you.

Geocachers of South Africa (GoSA) is an association of volunteers whose aim is to promote the game of geocaching in South Africa. Geocaching is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking ‘treasure’. A geocacher can place a geocache (container) somewhere in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology, and then share the geocache’s existence and location online. Participants all over the world can navigate to a specific set of GPS co-ordinates, locate these hidden containers, sign the logsheet inside and then log their experience online at www.geocaching.com. The word geocaching refers to ‘geo’ for geography, and ‘caching’, the process of hiding a cache. A cache is a hiding place for concealing and preserving provisions or valuables. As at January 2016, there are more than 12,000 geocaches hidden around South Africa and there are more than 2,000 teams of geocachers (the folk doing the finding and hiding). Aerobics anyone?

Turn your living room into an aerobics class. Invite your friends over. Get some crazy workout music together and get the heart rate beating faster for a great cardio workout. If you’re organised you can create a routine beforehand, if not, just wing it and every person then gets a turn to lead with an exercise. Work it girls!

Clothing swap-out

6

Be a rock star

Have a clothes swap. Get all the gals to bring clothes that they don’t wear anymore, or are tired of. Then put all the clothes in a pile in the middle of your bedroom floor and take turns to pull out pieces of clothing and try them on. You never know what gems you might find and they'll all be free!

Have some friends over where everyone has to dress up as their favourite actress, actor or singer. Create a mock stage with spotlights and then each person has a turn to perform as their celeb. You have to guess who it is and the best celeb of the evening gets a small prize, like a slab of chocolate.

8

Get rolling

9

Pizza party

Rolling Cherry is an indoor roller skating rink that was launched last year. When you get tired of skating, you can refresh with a cold beverage, a ‘boerewors’ roll and head off to the karaoke room for your very own rendition of some classic and urban songs on their karaoke playlist. This fab new spot is located in Johannesburg. For more info: www.rollingcherry.co.za. Look out for your very own roller skate park in your area, grab some friends and have some fun!

Get mom to buy a few basic pizza bases, then get toppings like mushrooms, ham, salami, olives and pineapple pieces (those in the tin work fabulously). Invite your friends over and have a pizza party where you can swop out creations and rate one another’s pizzas.

10

Bounce time

Bounce is a trampoline world where the wall becomes the floor, a slam-dunk is within your grasp and the rules of gravity no longer apply. It’s packed with lots of things to do, takes the rush of getting airborne and adds a bunch of new dimensions – from aerial manoeuvres to wall-running and dodgeball warfare. For more information: www.bounceinc.co.za, call 011 517 2500 or email enquiries@bounceinc.co.za. For more information on how bouncing can get you fit, see page 36 in this issue. Ed

7

Be a sport

If your school’s soccer, cricket, rugby or netball team are competing, then head over to show them some support. Not only will you lift their spirits, but being a bunch of friends together, you are guaranteed to have loads of fun. You will also have the opportunity to meet teens from other schools. teenzonemagazine.co.za 31

Elephant! BY TRACY-LEIGH C G KINSEY S

A

s a child I was a real scaredy-cat. I was shy and quiet and I missed out on a lot of fun things because of my fears. I hated theme parks because I was scared of the rides. I wouldn’t try new things like learning how to water ski because I was scared that I would look stupid, and I never made the first step to talk to somebody new in case they didn’t like me. Then when I was about 12 I had an incredible experience that left such a longlasting effect on me that I still think back on it when I need a teaspoon of extra courage. My family decided to go on a safari holiday to Mana Pools in Zimbabwe. Mana Pools is an area on the banks of the Zambezi River with lots of water, even more animals and very few people (we never saw another soul in the week that we were there). We camped in a temporary tented camp that was completely dismantled with the arrival of the first rains each year, leaving no sign of human activity. It was real, wild bush! I dreaded this trip for months. Don’t get me wrong – I love the bush and wild animals, but from the comfort of a building with four walls and with the security of a roof over my head! I knew that I would share a tent with my sister and that our parents’ tent would be about 25m away. I knew that I would have to walk about 50m to use the temporary toilet – on my own – at night! I tried very hard to get out of the trip. I asked if I could go and stay with my gran in her retirement village; I begged a friend to invite me to stay with her; I even offered to volunteer at the local SPCA for the week,

32 teenzonemagazine.co.za

but my father would have nothing of it! It was time to put my big girl panties on and face my fears. On our drive into the park we were given the safety talk – look where you walk, don’t walk around camp alone at night, and most importantly, if you encounter a wild animal, whatever you do don’t run! At about 4pm that afternoon I wandered off to my tent to fetch a book. As I rounded a tree, a few metres from the door of my tent, I walked smack bang into a female elephant with a tiny baby, quietly eating leaves off a low-lying branch. They were so quiet that nobody had even realised that they were there. I was engulfed by fear. I couldn’t breathe, I was dizzy, I had a swarm of bees in my stomach and I felt like I was about to faint. Within seconds our guide had realised what was going on and was standing right behind me. Quietly he whispered in my ear, “It’s okay. Relax and breathe.” I had no choice. For the first time in my life I couldn’t run away so I did what I was told. The next five minutes were probably the most beautiful five minutes of my life. That majestic, gigantic creature was so close that I could smell the damp mud on her body. I could see each individual hair on the little baby’s head and I could have counted her long, thick eyelashes. I could hear the deep rumble of the mom’s tummy digesting her food and I slowly started to relax.

Because I had the courage to stand and face that elephant, to face my fear, I was allowed a glimpse into her serene world. The pair stood and grazed quietly, and then a few minutes later the mom nudged the baby gently and they slowly wandered off. I had learnt an invaluable lesson that I would never forget – stand tall, take a deep breath, face the fear head-on and you may just have a wonderful, lifeenriching experience despite your fear!

EXCITEMENT AND FEAR ARE THE aSAME FEELINGS, JUST SEEN FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE a

teenzonemagazine.co.za 33

CELEB ME ZONEZONE W hat is fear? Fear is a perfectly natural emotion that is essential to our survival. We fear tangible things such as spiders and intangible things like embarrassing ourselves. We have fears based on childhood stories such as the boogie man, and we fear things that we have no control over such as getting ill or earthquakes. Fear is our brain’s way of warning us that there is a dangerous situation that we need to be aware of and prevents us from doing things that could endanger our lives. The problem is that most of us get so entangled in the emotion that we find it hard to take a step back and evaluate whether the fear is really valid or not. For example, my sister is terrified of moths. If a moth comes anywhere near her, she freaks out. When she really thinks about it though, she knows that a moth cannot cause her any harm in any way. It can’t bite her, sting her or make her ill, and yet she is still petrified.

Research has shown that some of the things that teens fear the most are: • getting poor grades at school • being bullied • peer pressure • facing parents about personal problems • not having a girlfriend/boyfriend • not finding a job after school Closely entwined in many of these fears is the deep underlying threat of being embarrassed. This is a fear that is definitely more pronounced during the teen years. Small children don’t think much about being embarrassed. Likewise, as we grow older and become more mature, what others think of us becomes less and less important.

hGHFK FMZHEQS Sometimes, a person may have such an intense fear of being embarrassed that they develop a more serious phobia known as social anxiety. Social anxiety is an irrational fear of social situations, which can be debilitating. These people become over-critical of themselves and feel that they are always being watched. They become self-conscious and start to avoid social situations. Social anxiety may be limited to certain situations, for example the fear of public speaking or meeting new

This can cause emotional problems such as depression and low self-esteem and can also cause physical symptoms such as stomach aches, headaches, sweating, blushing and shaking.

Whether you suffer from social anxiety or merely have a few fears that you want to overcome, there are some simple tips that you can use to help you: Talk about your fears. Just speaking about a fear often takes some of the power out of it. Start small. Make a list of the things that you fear and choose one that you think will be easiest to overcome. Start with that fear and take one small step to overcome it. For example, if you fear speaking to strangers, go to dinner with your family and make an effort to order your meal yourself. Once you’ve achieved that, move on to something a little bigger and more difficult. Breathe. The first thing we do when we are frightened is to hold our breath. This cuts off oxygen to our brain, which increases anxiety. A few deep breaths will help you to calm down. Ask yourself, “What’s the worst thing that could happen?” Evaluate your fear. Is it really as scary as you think? Practise, practise, practise. Once a week try to do something that takes you a little out of your comfort zone. Repetition is the key to overcoming a fear. Keep a diary. Every time you face a fear, record it in your diary. Read your diary often to see how far you’ve come. Getting back to my elephant – a week after we returned from our Zimbabwean safari, I did what I loved most and went horse riding. While waiting to mount my horse I was so excited I couldn’t breathe. I was dizzy, I had a swarm of bees in my stomach and I felt like I was about to faint. That feeling felt very familiar. I realised that these were exactly the same feelings I felt when I faced my elephant. Excitement and fear are the same feelings, just seen from a different perspective. One of life’s biggest and most rewarding lessons is to overcome fear. As George S Patton said, “Courage is only fear holding on a minute longer.” With some practice we can develop the ability to hold on a bit longer and, who knows, perhaps even conquer that fear altogether! Let us know if you had a fear that you have overcome. We’d love to hear from you so send an email to teenzone@panorama.co.za, subject line ‘Victorious’. Ed

Gone are the days of having to go to the gym for a boring workout. Ever thought of bouncing to get in shape?

M

eet Dylan Whittle: Junior Men African Continental BMX Champion. One of his proudest moments on a national level in his BMXing career to date, was receiving his Protea blazer. He has competed three times in the BMX World Championships and looks forward to competing in more. We caught up with Dylan during a workout session at Bounce to find out more about him and how he remains fit for his sport.

How did you start BMXing? I was about eight or nine years old. I have two older brothers who did racing, so I used to hang out with them and they would challenge me to try to jump with them. What is your usual training programme? Well, being a racer, you have to train holistically; it’s not one set routine. On different days I train and target different parts of my body. My weekly training routine consists of gym work to build strength, road rides and sprints to gain speed, and of course track work to nail jumps. The main muscle groups used by a BMX racer are the quads, hamstrings and calves (for power), the abdominal muscles and back (to keep the body stable), and the biceps and triceps (arms help with actions – jumping). Do you follow a special diet? I don’t really follow a specific diet, but leading up to competitions and race days I tend to carboload in the morning to sustain energy throughout the day. I stay hydrated on race days and eat fruit for energy. How could a novice get started – what training programme would you suggest? In BMXing a novice will always look up to an elite rider. BMXing in South Africa is quite a small sport 36 teenzonemagazine.co.za

so everyone in the sport knows everyone. We will always try to help one another. But for a novice to improve their skills they should do daily sprints on a bicycle (even if you just do this in your street); it will help build speed, which is what you need to get out the gate and down the start hill. You then have to get on the track and learn how and where to pump for the right timing and then you could move on to learning manuals, which will help you in harder parts of the track. Who should definitely avoid this type of sport? People who have never been exposed to a bicycle, as you really have to have good skills on a bike to get on a track. The sport is fast-paced and gets the adrenaline pumping. People with weak knees should also not try this sport. Most of all if you don’t like pain or falling, don’t do it! It is an extreme sport at the end of the day. What are the benefits of a trampoline workout? Trampolining is a great addition to my workout routine as it strengthens my core to the max! Wall-running at Bounce has actually helped me greatly as it has strengthened my back muscles. Getting to jump on trampolines also helps a lot with practising for the jumps on the tracks. Sometimes you feel a bit weary when you have to jump during a race, but practising on my bike at Bounce helps me nail the jumps as it takes the fear out of landing badly because you are

on a trampoline, so it gets you mentally prepared for the track. An hour on a trampoline honestly is killer compared to working out in the gym and is way better as I’m working my entire body. It’s great for overall conditioning. What is your favourite sportswear brand? Nike is my favourite but for BMXing my brand is Faith Wear. For those readers looking to start improving their health and fitness, what top tip do you have? Never give up! Commit yourself fully. If it’s something you love doing and have a passion for, then stick to your plan and you will always see results. Even if you start off small, it will get you far in the end. Nothing is ever too big to accomplish.

Bounce is a world where the wall becomes the floor, a slam-dunk is within your grasp and the rules of gravity no longer apply. It’s packed with lots of things to do, and takes the rush of getting airborne and adds a bunch of new dimensions – from aerial manoeuvres to wall-running and dodgeball warfare. IS ON HER WAY!

Finally! It is March and Nicki will be gracing our shores later this month – we can’t wait. As part of Nicki’s Pinkprint Tour, we celebrate her album titled 1,28 m 0. by the same name, which arrived at the top of the Billboard 200 and Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart, cementing her as rap’s reigning queen.

M

inaj recently made history, simultaneously occupying four top 10 spots on the mainstream R&B/hip hop airplay chart, becoming the first female artist to achieve this. Minaj also has the most hits on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart of any female rapper in history, and is number three among all female artists on the chart, only behind Aretha Franklin and Taylor Swift. What’s more, 12 of her entries reached the top 10, yielding another record for a female rapper. The Anaconda singer was due to perform in South Africa in 2014 at the TribeOne Festival, but the event was cancelled after a bitter battle between the organisers and the City of Tshwane. We are certainly glad Nicki could look past that and made dates available for South Africa again. In an interview with Fox 29 Nicki said that the tour is going to be iconic, with a whole lot of back-to-back hits, and we know that this rap queen is going to bring it. Nicki has been a busy girl. You will be seeing her in the big screen release of Barbershop: The Next Cut on 15 April. This instalment takes place more than 10 years since the last appointment at Calvin’s Barbershop. Calvin (Ice Cube) and his long-time crew, including Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer), are still there, but the shop has undergone some major changes. Most

noticeably, the once male-dominated sanctuary is now co-ed. The ladies bring their own flavour, drama and gossip to the shop, challenging the fellas at every turn. Despite the good times and camaraderie within the shop, the surrounding community has taken a turn for the worse, forcing Calvin and his crew to come together to save not only the shop, but also their neighbourhood.

Event organisers regard a person as disabled if he or she has a physical impairment (meaning a partial or total loss of a bodily function or part of the body) that is long term and/or recurring and substantially limits his or her ability to carry out normal dayto-day activities. If you are not disabled, DO NOT purchase these particular tickets, as you will be refused access to the premises by security personnel without any form of compensation. Tickets for the disabled seating/platform can be purchased in advance by contacting Ticketpro on info@ticketpros.co.za.

ou must have heard and sang along to the break-out single from Al Bairre (pronounced Al Bear), Let’s Fall In Love Some More, on the radio airwaves throughout SA. This is a single off their mini LP which was released late last year titled Experience The Al Bairre Show With Al Bairre Experience. With their impossibly catchy beat and great mix of musical instruments, Al Bairre’s totally unique sound is sure to create many an experience for them. We had some time with the indie band in between their hectic gig schedule and found out more about this fun foursome.

WHICH SONG ON YOUR LATEST LP DID YOU ENJOY RECORDING THE MOST? Where Do We Go From Here – it was the last song we’d written and hadn’t finished entirely. The others we’d had in the pipeline for quite a while before so it was exciting working on something fresh.

this mini LP and so a whole album really does sound a bit ambitious. Plus we really enjoy working on singles in particular and making sure each one of them sounds better than the last.

WHAT DID YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT FILMING YOUR MUSIC VIDEO FOR LET'S FALL IN LOVE SOME MORE ? It took us like an hour to film.

IF YOU HAD TO RENAME ONE OF YOUR SONGS, WHICH WOULD IT BE AND WHY? The twins don’t enjoy how long Let’s Fall In Love Some More and Where Do We Go From Here? are, so I suppose they’d want them changed. But they also don’t like the title of our mini LP, Experience The Al Bairre Show With Al Bairre Experience, so we’re thinking of leaving them in a hot car full of gas.

DO YOU PLAN ON RECORDING A FULL ALBUM?

YOUR SONGS CONSIST OF A WIDE VARIETY OF INSTRUMENTS. IF YOU COULD ADD ANOTHER INSTRUMENT, WHICH WOULD IT BE?

One day! Probably not anytime soon. It’s taken us three years just to come out with

Steel drums. Who doesn’t want to sound like Under The Sea!

CELEBZONE

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE SONG-WRITING PROCESS? When someone comes up with a way to get from a verse into a chorus. Otherwise it’s a completely and entirely miserable experience and we often give up and share a bucket of ice-cream and watch Sex and the City. Samantha really cheers us all up. She might even be the thing we enjoy most about the song-writing process.

WHERE DO YOU GET THE INSPIRATION FOR MOST OF YOUR SONGS? Nicholas lives down at Heartbreak Hotel. Well, there’s only one room with a single bed available.

WHICH LIVE PERFORMANCE HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE TO PERFORM AND WHY? That one where you were there and we were there and we all had fun together – there.

YOUR SONGS HAVE BEEN FEATURED ON MANY PLATFORMS OVERSEAS. WHICH WERE YOU MOST SURPRISED BY AND WHY? A friend of ours was watching Friends in the States and said our ad with Hershey’s kept interrupting their programming.

WHEN FORMING THE BAND, DID YOU EVER THINK IT WOULD BE SUCH A SUCCESS? Not at all. It’s been a crazy journey so far with lots of fun.

WHEN MAKING THE DECISION TO BECOME A BAND, WHAT WAS THE MAIN INFLUENCE? It seemed like the best way to see the world and we’re pretty sure the twins weren’t liked at school and so we did them a solid.

WHAT HAVE YOU ENJOYED MOST ABOUT THE RELEASE OF YOUR LATEST LP? The response. It’s been overwhelming. With the single going viral on the Spotify Top 50, it’s just surpassing our wildest dreams.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A BAND JUST STARTING OUT? Find yourself a manager you can see yourself spending the rest of your life with and play as many shows as possible.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO NAME THE BAND AL BAIRRE? The twins’ dad went to Ibiza back in ’83 and got blackout drunk and woke up with a tattoo on his lower back that said ‘Al Bairre 4 eva’. He never knew what it meant or why he got it. So out of sympathy, when we started the band we named it Al Bairre so that the tattoo would have some relevance.

RECORDING OUR SONGS SUPER NICELY JUST WASN’T VERY HIGH ON OUR LIST OF THINGS WE WERE GONNA DO WHEN WE FIRST STARTED THE BAND FOR SOME REASON. BUT THEN PEOPLE ENDED UP REALLY LIKING THE SONGS SO WE THOUGHT WE BETTER PULL OUR HEADS OUT OUR BUTTS AND GO INTO A PROPER STUDIO WHERE YOU HAVE COUCHES AND COFFEE AND XBOX AND A a DOG AND ALL THOSE FANCY STUDIO THINGS AND DO IT PROPERLY

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BAND'S MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE?

that’s a quality we collectively all enjoy in a person.

Tom once dropped all his cymbals down an escalator in the London Underground. What a time.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING EXPERIENCE THE BAND HAS HAD?

DESCRIBE YOUR RECORDING EXPERIENCE IN SIX WORDS?

The pound-rand exchange rate. We had to eat so much rice.

When a man loves a woman.

WHICH COUNTRY DO YOU ONE DAY DREAM OF TOURING AND WHY?

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT BEING BASED IN CAPE TOWN?

America. It’s the land of the free and home of the brave. Also their music scene is banging. Obviously.

Everyone is very good-looking and

MAKE A FRIEND’S DAY You could spread the happiness with little acts of inspiration for your friends. A hug and big smile when you see a friend will instantly make them feel better. Try for one day to compliment all your friends or give them little notes with a small chocolate. This will definitely spread the love, leaving you all fuzzy and warm inside.

MAK AKE YOUR PET’S DAY TTh here is no unconditional love like that o of your pet. No matter in what mood you are when you get home, they are always happy to see you and can’t wait to smother you with love. Take a few hours out of your weekend and spend time with your furry friend. Take them for a walk, give them a bath, play with them in the park and when they are e exhausted spend time relaxing and jjust being with them. Best thera apy ever!

ALONE TIME Our lives are so hectic with school, sport, friends and family that it gets overwhelming, leaving you in zombie mode. Well, there is nothing wrong with taking a little me-time. This is easily accomplished if you warn the family you need some quiet time. You don’t want them to interrupt you because they are worried about where you are. Take a blanket, your favourite chocolate and your TeenZone and lay on the grass under the trees, escaping everyone for a while. When last did you lie on your back and watch the clouds passing by? This does mean leaving your cell on silent and out of reach, even if just for an hour.

GET CREATIVE We can’t all be Picasso, but there is a creative genius in all of us that is waiting to be released. Visit the hobby shop nearest to you and find something you would like to try out. It could be making jewellery, creating mosaic masterpieces or painting. If you’re not sure which, chat to the store staff and they will be able to get you in the right direction on your creat journey. creative

WHAT ARE YOUR WORKING HOURS? Although variable, I generally work from 8am to 6pm. Because we are required to provide a service 24/7, we take turns in being on call after hours and over weekends to cover any emergencies. WHAT DOES THIS JOB ENTAIL? As a radiologist, we are required to make diagnoses using a variety of modalities: X-rays, ultrasound, CT (computed tomography) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). We need to be experts in anatomy as well as disease processes. WHAT ARE THE MUNDANE ASPECTS? There are no real mundane aspects. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PERSONALITY ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED TO MANAGE THIS CAREER? As with most professions one has to be dedicated to be successful. To be a

46 teenzonemagazine.co.za

MEZONE doctor requires patience, compassion and diligence. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT ASPECTS A PERSON COULD GET INVOLVED WITH IN THIS CAREER FIELD? As a general radiologist you are involved with all aspects of the profession. However, you could super-specialise in a particular modality (X-ray, ultrasound, CT or MRI), or a particular field of radiology (paediatrics, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, neurology or oncology). Interventional radiology is a field whereby a radiologist can be involved in treatment (such as opening or closing blood vessels) or diagnosis (image-guided biopsies and the like). WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HUGE NO-NOS IN THIS INDUSTRY? You cannot drop your guard! Patients and referring doctors are relying on us for accurate assessments. WHERE COULD YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THIS CAREER? It all depends on the individual. Some radiologists prefer to further their career in academics (teaching in a public hospital); others prefer to work in a private hospital practice. The doors are also open for research as radiology is a dynamic profession. WHAT DID YOU STUDY TO BECOME A RADIOLOGIST? You first have to study medicine, followed by a registrarship in radiology. IS THIS A VERY STRESSFUL CAREER? It is indeed. A combination of long hours of intense concentration makes it stressful. You also have to keep up with advances by reading journals and attending conferences and courses. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET A FOOT IN THE DOOR IN THIS INDUSTRY? Once you have become a doctor and completed the necessary internship and community service, you would have to apply for a post as a radiology registrar.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO EARN IN THIS CAREER? Fulfilment, gratification, and lots of grey hairs! WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THIS CAREER? It’s a very stimulating career, with constant changes in technology and concepts to keep us on our toes. Because we are a universal community, one can get to attend meetings and conferences all over the world. WHAT IS THE MARKET LIKE IN TERMS OF JOBS AND COMPETITION? There are loads of job opportunities in rural areas whereas in the urban areas there is more competition. WOULD THERE BE OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK OVERSEAS ONCE QUALIFIED? Due to registration limitations, our qualifications do not allow us to practise abroad without having to write more exams and spend more time training. This is true for many countries. However, there are some that accept our qualifications and allow us to practise. COULD A PERSON OPEN A RADIOLOGY PRACTICE, OR IS THIS SOMETHING ONLY FOUND IN HOSPITALS? You could certainly open a practice separate from a hospital. However, most of our patients are referred to us from

doctors who work in the hospital. Patients are also referred as emergencies via the casualty. Many patients in the wards are too sick to be transferred elsewhere for imaging, so it makes more sense to provide a service in a hospital. ARE YOU EVER ON EMERGENCY CALL? A major hospital cannot function without a radiology service, so we are open 24/7. The radiologists take turns to cover the after-hours and weekend emergency service. DO YOU DEAL DIRECTLY WITH PATIENTS? AND IF SO, WHY WOULD A PATIENT COME TO SEE YOU? Remember that doctors don’t treat X-rays or scans – they treat patients. We spend a lot of time with our patients, and this helps us to understand their problems and in turn create a more holistic report for the referring doctor. HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH BAD NEWS FOR A PATIENT? It’s always hard, but it is part of our training. ANY TIPS FOR TEENS WHO MAY WANT TO PURSUE A CAREER AS A RADIOLOGIST? Hard work pays off! First you need to get a place in medical school, and then …
