ith January comes a wave of New Year’s resolutions; people strive to be better in many aspects of their life. One of the most commonly heard of resolutions is to become healthier- toned, more fit, stronger. It seems like the best resolution for our community considering over one-third of the American population is obese. In an effort to achieve this popular resolution of becoming healthier, one can find the local gyms to be packed with many more people than normal. By February, only 20 percent of those people remain according to the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclubs’ Association. Also as a way to get healthier, people begin eating better. The biggest obstacle with eating healthier is the fact that we live in a country where everything is supposed to be fast; one result is fast food. On almost every corner, you can find a greasy hamburger that is fast, inexpensive, and convenient. People love foods that taste good. Grease tastes good.
For high schoolers, an obstacle becomes the cafeteria food. Even after the recent changes made to the diet plans, the food is still not great for someone trying to eat on a diet. For example, today the lunch options are popcorn chicken, nachos, a cheeseburger, or a salad. The first three obviously are not “diet foods” and whereas the salad sounds like it is, there is virtually no nutritional value in the lunch salads. The lettuce is iceberg versus more nutritional spinach or romaine lettuce and students often drench the whole thing in enough dressing to overpower anything that would originally be healthy. Of course, it is a student’s responsibility to eat healthy if they want to, but there should be more options in the cafeteria line to make it easier; for example, a sub line. As a community, there should be less emphasis on the convenience factor of fast food and more emphasis on the long-term benefits of eating fresher, more nutritional foods.
bout 70 million customers who purchased items from Target during Nov. 27 to Dec. 15 had their personal information stolen from a security breach. Debit and credit cards users had their card numbers, PINs, and security codes, among other pieces of private information, stolen by hackers. Although Target is quickly trying to control the situation, people are still concerned Carolina Bae about shopping at the retail chain. Some are turned off from shopping at large stores completely, while others have severed their loyalty only from Target. However, let’s be realistic. This situation has had no effect on most people, especially teenagers. They will keep swiping those cards like nothing ever happened. After all, there are too many new, tempting products on the market that are demanding to be bought. I am here to say we cannot continue with that mentality. We need to be safer with our money and monitor how we spend it. When buying anything one should make sure the seller is a trusted source. If there is a hint of skepticism of the credibility of the seller, the buyer can research reviews of people who have bought from the seller before. We can all also check our bank accounts more frequently to monitor what is happening. I check mine every time I make a purchase to make sure I was charged the correct amount and that everything on my statement was made by me. A staple rule is to carry cash. Using a debit or credit card for everything is so much more convenient, but every time someone uses his card is an added risk of having information stolen. So instead, carry cash to use at establishments where there is doubt with the trustworthiness or simply for an emergency situation. I always do my best to try and carry at least 20 dollars on me, but that does not always work out too well. Do as I say, not as I do.

Behind The Filter: Has Photo Editing Gone Too Far?
In today’s digital age, with social media networks like Instagram growing, people are becoming more interested in sharing photos. Do the use of filters and other editing applications hinder the integrity of photography or enhance them?
P
hotography is a popular form of self-expression. Social media sources such as Instagram and Twitter have provided tools to make this form of expression more readily available for the everyday person. The photography tools provided have become more user-friendly and have revolutionized picture-editing, increasing the popularity of photography. “Filters”, as they have been dubbed, give users the opportunity to edit their photos, whether they are selfies or landscapes, with one click of a button. This new feature has become controversial because individuals believe that it demolishes the integrity of photography and the realness of a picture. Individuals have the ability to filter their pictures to the point where it appears to look nothing like the original copy. People believe that this takes away from the true purpose of photography. However, because photography is a form of self-expression, individuals should have the right to do as they please in terms of editing. It is a first amendment right. People should not be judged or condemned for editing their own pictures. They reserve the right to change them and make them appear how they want. Photographs do not lose integrity when they are filtered and there is no such thing as over editing. Pictures are not edited to suit others opinions or to show the true nature of things, they are edited to convey a message that the photographer or editor wants to show. In this way, photography is an art and therefore the artist has the artistic liberty to change pictures to suit the message that is trying to be expressed. When people go to an art gallery they do not judge the artist or their artwork for being fake or lacking integrity, they applaud the artist for their expression. Much the same, photographers should not be judged for being fake or lacking integrity because they are simply expressing themselves.

S
ocial media has allowed many people to connect with others, but also to present themselves in anyway they choose. Photoshop and filters have become a normal step in posting pictures recently and it’s just too much. Twitter and Instagram are notorious for users placing filters on pictures and for having people look perfect online. They may be perfect online, but in reality they may or may not look like the person portrayed. In my opinion, these filters should only sharpen or enhance a picture. These deceptive filters are used to falsify a person’s appearance and it is rather annoying. A girl, for example, can be ‘Twitter famous’ and have many followers, but in real life she may not be all that great. Filters may help people resolve the enormous amount of pressure to look beautiful and perfect, but this tool takes away from true beauty. Beauty that happens naturally in life certainly does not need a filter to convey itself. A naturally beautiful woman should not feel obligated to use multiple filters to receive retweets, favorites, or even hearts. Our society today puts pressure on young people to be the best of the best, and this also includes appearance. Women are not considered pretty if they are not thin or have captivating features. Filters serve as a way to look thin, have seemingly pretty skin, and sharpen their features. Society is making our citizens into self-centered perfectionists. Besides selfies, people also take pictures of objects such as food and clothing. Apparently taking a picture of your food is not enough; you must put a filter on it to sharpen every noodle and every veggie. Every picture must have an artistic look or it will not be well liked. The frightening thing is that people actually care about their reception on social media. It is memorable to document your life via photography and we can all appreciate beauty, but I would rather not admire fake photos. Filters can enhance and sharpen photos, which is completely fine, but let’s not over do it. Photos by Carolina Bae

Behind Hazelwood’s Ruling Supreme Court Case Ruled Student Written Articles Can Be Censored If Related To Legitimate Pedagogical Concerns The Supreme Court ruled on a case of censorship on January 13, 1988, regarding The Spectrum, a student newspaper, published as part of a journalism class at Hazelwood East High School in Missouri. Principal Robert Reynolds objected to two stories scheduled to be printed on teen pregnancy and divorce in their newspaper. The Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier case was found in favor of Hazelwood School District, overruling a Court of Appeals reversal of a District Court ruling. There were 5 votes for Hazelwood, and 3 against. The justices believed that the censorship did not violate the student’s First Amendment rights of free speech.
School Closes for MLK Day School will be closed on Mon., Jan. 20 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. School will reopen Tues. and exams will begin.
Advisors Give Financial Aid Workshop
Michael Nelson Assistant Principal
This workshop will be in the auditorium on Jan. 28 at 7:00 PM. Advisors will discuss the FAFSA and other college topics in detail.
Have you ever felt like censoring an article that the Royal News has printed? “No, I think that what I see in the student newspaper is a high level of journalistic integrity.” In your opinion, what are the boundaries for student journalism? “This is not something that would be done without a fault. If it were to destroy someone’s character, or personally attack, or create any danger or concern to the student body.”
Academic Challenge Team Competes At Conference Tournament
Why is student journalism important in our school? “There is a science to it that really helps students to think and process information or deal with situations. It is also product based learning, which is where students work together as a team to create a newspaper, one that not only informs students but serves the common good. It’s a reward for the students to see what they’ve done through print and what is put online, so it is well worth it.” Do you believe that students should have the right to express their opinions on any subject? “Everybody has a right to their opinion. Everyone has a right to express their opinion within a certain context. So I would say yes, with limits.” What are some issues that would force your hand in censoring? “When you talk about censoring something you’re talking about limiting free speech. I would censor if I were to know in advance that there was slander that would create a substantial amount of fear towards the students. I cannot imagine that would happen in our student newspaper. ”
Administrator Michael Nelson speaks about the rights of student journalism. He also expressed the boundaries within journalism. Photo by Ronnie Dayvault.

Legalization Of Marijuana In Colorado And Washington Prompts Closer Look At L
Q A Q A Q A Q A
Q A
Where do you see Virginia going concerning laws on marijuana? Honestly, I don’t know. Virginia traditionally has been a very conservative state. If they do legalize it, I don’t see it being anytime soon. What is your opinion on legalization?
Q A
I absolutely disagree. It destroys families. Honestly, studies show it has effects on the human brain. It has long-lasting negative effects on the human brain especially during youth. There will be more car crashes and an increase in injuries and deaths. How do you think legalization would affect crime?
Some people say that the crime rate will go down when it is legalized, but there has been documentation showing that in places where legalization has happened the crime rates have actually gone up. If a person is dependent on marijuana, if they don’t have money to buy it, they will steal items... pawn items, to go to the store and buy it. Making it more readily available, I can only see where our crime rates are going to increase.
Q A
Are there any positive effects of legalization?
I don’t see where it will be a positive effect. I would have to turn this around if marijuana was legal and pose this. If the general public went to the hospital to get an operation, would they want the surgeon to be under the influence of marijuana? Would they want the anesthesiologist to be under the influence of marijuana? If the emergency medical crew came to your house would you want them to be under the influence of marijuana? Would you want the police investigation a crime that just happened to you to be under the influence of marijuana? When I get on an airplane I want the pilot to be at his absolute best. I want him to be at the top of his game because my life is in his hands. And to think that person may not be at their best because they are under the influence of marijuana? I don’t like it. I don’t agree with it.

The main mind-altering chemical in Marijuana is delta-9-tetrehydrocannabinol (THC). Marijuana is a dry, shredded green and brown mix of leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds from the hemp plant Cannabis sativa. FDA has already approved and prescribed THC based drugs. Marinol is a legal and safe version of Marijuana and has been available by prescription since 1985. Marijuana is the most common illicit drug in the United States. More teenagers are now current smokers of Marijuana than of cigarettes. THC acts upon cannabinoid receptors in the brain. The highest density of cannabinoid receptors is found in parts of the brain that influence pleasure, memory, thinking, concentration, sensory, time perception, and coordinated movement. Heavy Marijuana users generally report lower life satisfaction, poorer mental and physical health, relationship problems, and less academic and career success. It is estimated that users have a 4.8-fold increase in the risk of heart attack in the first hour after smoking the drug. 95 million Americans above the age of 12 have tried Marijuana at least once. Three out of every four reported using it within the last 30 days. Nearly 7% of high school seniors nationally smoke daily. Contrary to popular belief that Marijuana is not addictive, 9% of users become addicted. So far, Colorado and Washington are the only states to have legalized recreational Marijuana. Eighteen other states and Washington D.C. have legalized Marijuana for medical use. I only eat berries, like strawberries, and blueberries, apples, and pears. I don’t eat citrus fruits because they’re high in sugar.”
What were the mistakes you were making before? “I ate too many carbohydrates, like too much bread and sweets, not enough protein.”
Do you have any recommendations to those who want to try and be more healthy? “[You have to] do something. Make small changes that you can live with. Don’t think of it as a diet; think of it as a lifestyle change, because it has to be something you can live with long term. Motivation also has a lot to do with it.”
Are there any added costs of this lifestyle? “I think it’s cheaper actually because I don’t eat out or buy junk food. I only buy meat and vegetables. I’m probably saving money by not eating out so much.”
What kind of time commitment has this been? “It takes more time because I really have to plan now instead of “I’m hungry now, I’m going to get something to eat.” I plan for the week. I don’t eat out; very seldom do I eat out. I do more cooking because it’s better for you. Cooking does not take up much time, it’s mostly prep time.”
Bailey follows a diet plan created by Dr. Jeffrey Sicat of Virginia Weight and Wellness.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT Garrett Holt Wrestling
Indoor Track Runners Discuss Differences In Their Specialities Junior long distance runner Tyler Spence How long have you been running? “For four years.” Are you a distance runner or sprinter? How were you chosen for this? “I run distance. I started with cross country and cross country is only distance running so I knew when I started doing track I wanted to run the mile.” What types of running goes into running your specialty ? “A lot of mixture of repeat workouts and long runs for high mileage.” How does distance running differ from sprint running? “Sprinting is all about going really fast for a short period. Distance runners run for longer periods of time. We focus on endurance more than form.” How do both squads bond as a team even though they run different specialities? “In the end we are all on the same team, both sets have to run well to win. Even if we do good we have to rely on them to win.”
Junior sprinter Jerron Ramsey How long have you been running? “This is my first year running on the team.” Are you a distance runner or sprinter? How were you chosen for this? “I’m a sprinter. I was chosen because of my speed, and I don’t really have a lot of endurance.” What types of running goes into running your specialty ? “We run 300 meters and 100 meters to build up endurance.” How does sprint running differ from distance running? “They run for a long period of time and they run further. We just use short burst of speed. It’s different because they have to conserve their energy rather than use it all in a short race.” How do both squads bond as a team even though they run different specialities? “We push each other to make everyone better.” What are some major keys to success for running your speciality? “Form, the way we run, and breathing techniques, and also stretching to keep your muscles warm.”
What are some major keys to success for running your speciality? “Put in the mileage, make sure you’re in shape, and build up endurance stamina.”
When did you start wrestling? “I started in the eighth grade.” What made you start? “It’s a sport I had not done. I used to do football and they said that it will get you in good shape for football.” What motivates you before a match? “Knowing that I’ve worked hard. Even though it’s individual it can determine if the team wins or loses matches.” How do you feel the team will do this season? “We lost a few seniors who were good, and we have a lot of returning guys. We have a full team this year. There are only four guys this year on varsity, the rest will return next year.” How does this year differ from previous years since you are a senior? “I’m a captain this year, more responsibility, and most of the guys look up to you. I need to watch my behavior because the guys are watching are me.” How do you train for wrestling? “Before the season I cut out carbs, stop drinking soda, I run around, and I try to get my weight down close enough to the weight class I want to be for the wrestling season.”
