LOCAL PRODUCE, U-PICKS & FARMSTANDS EAT LOCAL! The local food movement continues to grow in popularity and importance. In this age of processed foodstuffs and shipped-in produce, more and more consumers are keen to understand and identify with exactly where their food is coming from. The fertile fields surrounding our region have for years been producing an incredible diversity of fruits and vegetables. The secret ingredient (or at least one key factor) is the unique microclimate created by Lake Michigan. Join the conscious consumers who have already discovered our area’s healthy harvests and drive directly to the source. Get to know the friendly folks who tend the farms and fields of our region, and sink your teeth into some healthy, delicious locally-grown foods.

10 & 11. A little further inland and in the heart of wine country, you can pick or purchase peaches and apples at Hartlines Harvest Stand. … and speaking of wine, Lemon Creek Farm & Winery grows much more than grapes, buy a bushel before or after sampling some wine, or take a fun family hayride into their orchards to pick your own. Combine the knowledge you gain on these pages with the places to find it all using the maps on pages 10 & 11 where u-picks and farm stands are indicated and appropriately color-coded with green dots. Together they’ll guide you to a wonderful variety of healthy, locally grown treats.

SOMETHING FOR EVERY SEASON Springtime’s asparagus, Summer’s blueberries, and Fall’s apples and pumpkins all benefit from the “lake effect” - the weather patterns affected by our close proximity to Lake Michigan. Milder seasons combine with the lake breezes that waft over our rolling countryside to make our region as fertile and abundant as it is lovely and relaxing.

FIND YOUR SUPER FOODS HERE One of the region’s most popular and abundant treats is the blueberries that typically ripen throughout the height of summer. There are several nearby farms where you can pick your own or buy them freshly picked. We recommend Jones Blueberries, locally owned and locally grown. See their ad on this page and find them on the guide maps on pages

WELCOME TO WINE COUNTRY breweries including locals Round Barn and Greenbush Brewing and Bridgman’s newest microbreweries, Tapistry Brewing Company, Transient Artisan Ales, HayMarket Brewing, Cultivate Brewing and Watermark Brewing Company. Finally, if you fancy two fingers of something with a little more kick, check out some of the spirits being distilled locally at Round Barn and Journeyman Distillery in nearby Three Oaks.

We’ve Got More Than Just Wine

to

Wet Your Whistle

While we’re quite proud of our wineries, we’d be remiss in not mentioning our region’s burgeoning breweries and developing distilleries. Michigan’s craft beer industry has been booming in recent years, and again, there’s a great opportunity to try them all right here on the Lake in Bridgman. The 6th annual Weko Beach Brewers Festival will be held on Saturday, October 29th from 1pm to 7pm. Again, great bands, fabulous food, and a gorgeous sunset are all bonus accompaniments to the over 70 varieties of craft beer you’ll be able to sample from 20+ Michigan craft

Looking For Fun? Beyond the obvious fun of Weko Beach and Warren Dunes on beautiful Lake Michigan, consider swinging a club while you are here – either the short stick on the putting greens at Captain Mike’s Fun Park, or the real deal on the greens at Pebblewood Country Club. Either way, you get to enjoy the challenge of trying to achieve a hole-in-one!

ll of the best elements of good craft beer come together in southwest Michigan and our beers are made with ingredients that literally come from just down the road! With soil and climatic conditions that are so favorable for agricultural production, we have an abundant supply of key ingredients needed to make delicious brews. Our fertile and temperate conditions result in a wide variety of hops, barley, and other grains that are harvested from sun-warmed fields just when they are needed to make new batches of local craft beers. Because beer is 90-95% water, the pure waters of Lake Michigan and the area’s aquifer provide the perfect base for every craft beer produced in the region. With a low mineral content, these soft waters allow brewers

to easily adjust their recipes to reflect the intended flavors without having to go through rigorous and timeconsuming deoxygenation and filtration processes. Nothing is wasted in the production of beer around here – just ask our local cattle farmers! Spent grains make a delicious and nutritious food for cows, who enjoy the low-fat, high-protein supplement. Spent grains help area farmers to maintain their herd’s weight and nutrition, especially during the winter when forage is scarce. So visit one or visit them all – pull up a stool and sample all the fresh, pure goodness of the many craft brews that are made right here in the Greater Bridgman area, knowing you are truly tasting a local product!

Cheers, Beer Lovers!

A GREAT PLACE TO VISIT... As you page through this helpful guide it will become evident that Bridgman is a great place to visit, with an incredible array of attractions and destinations for every person and interest. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find an impressive community infrastructure underpinning all of those “icing on the cake” elements that visitors flock to our region to enjoy. You’ll find, in fact, that the Bridgman area is an amazing place to call home! Bridgman is rather unique in comparison to some of our surrounding communities. While offering all of the benefits of “beach towns” that also line Lake Michigan’s coastline, Bridgman offers year-around amenities, conveniences and basic infrastructure. We’re the closest coastline community to Chicagoland that boasts a full-time population that isn’t outnumbered by part-time homeowners and rental cottages. While many of our neighboring communities’ businesses scale back hours or even board up for the winter, the Bridgman area remains open for business year round, with a strong and stable full-time population that enthusiastically supports local business. When the shopping list or social calendar calls for more metropolitan affairs, we’re just a few minutes from St. Joseph & Benton Harbor, a short trip to South Bend, and a bit over an hour to Grand Rapids or Chicago. Impressive Infrastructure. The word “infrastructure” may induce thoughts of elements such as power grids or transportation networks. With the Cook Nuclear Power Generation Facility in our community and I-94 at our doorstep we remain powered up and connected to

the world, but there’s so much more built into our community that makes it an attractive place to call home…

Super Schools Bridgman Public Schools serve the area as one of the region’s highest-rated school districts. It is the number one “School of Choice” in Berrien County, meaning that numerous students from neighboring districts vie for the opportunity to attend our schools, with over 300 students from 11 neighboring districts attending today. Bridgman Public Schools are in high demand with families who value quality education thanks to our robust academic programs, competitive and well-rounded athletic programs, strong fine arts programs and outstanding facilities. Bridgman Schools are staying on the forefront of quality education, technological innovation and state-of-the-art facilities thanks in part to the community’s recent show of support in passing recent bond proposals totaling over $23 million in improvements.

Strong Leadership The City of Bridgman and Lake Township work diligently to maintain the infrastructure, quality of life, and constant improvement of our communities. Our municipal Councils, Boards and Committees are comprised of hard-working and enthusiastic community members. Many of our appointed and elected leaders have served our communities for years longer than the average of their peers.

A FABULOUS PLACE TO CALL HOME !

Community leaders focus equally on the maintenance of quality-oflife for residents and on development of our communities for the business community. Bridgman and Lake Township partner in the Economic Growth Alliance, a public-private partnership of municipal and business leaders that concentrates on the economic development of our communities. The CGA was recently recognized Statewide for leading a larger partnership with neighboring communities to initiate the “Lake To Grapes” tourism wayfinding effort. You’ll see the results in the convenient directional and informational signage pointing the way to key communities, destinations and attractions across the area. Finally, the Chamber is proud to support and be represented by local business owners, and is always enthusiastic and supportive of new businesses entering our communities.

All of the infrastructure and amenities, the beaches and the vineyards, the amazing shops and restaurants, and the strong sense of community come with a price tag that will likely surprise you. Home values, while strong, are not exorbitant, and you can find all of your basic needs and more at an incredible value, and check out with a friend and neighbor who knows your name. All in all, these and other factors add up to a great place to call home. We have something for everyone, so contact the Chamber or just come to town and learn more about our wonderful community. A BRIEF HISTORY Before It Was Bridgman In the fall of 1856, George Bridgman, along with partners Warren and Charles Howe formed the Charlotte Lumber Company. A large steam-powered sawmill was set up near the present intersection of Lake Street and Red Arrow Highway. A narrow-gauge railway was constructed, running from the mill to the lake with several branches into the timber. About seven miles of track were busily traveled by an engine and over 30 cars. The area around the mill became known as Charlotteville, after one of the Howe brother’s wives, Charlotte. Unfortunately the Charlotte Mill was destroyed by fire in 1863. Over the next seven years, the partners rebuilt two more times, and each time the Mill was again

destroyed by fire. The Howe brothers were finally convinced that this wasn’t their calling and in 1870 left the area to pursue other ventures. George Bridgman, however, decided to stay in the area. Bridgman had acquired several hundred acres of land, including most of present-day Bridgman, and he and other residents began growing fruit trees, grapes and berry plants. Of course the market for their fruits was limited to what could be sold locally.

Mr. Bridgman granted right of way to the Chicago Michigan and Lakeshore Railroad to pass through his land, and in 1871 the “Bridgman Depot” was erected. That same year the Post Office changed their local designation to Bridgman carrying George’s name into history. The Railroad Depot enabled the already growing nursery business to explode in Bridgman. In 1888 Ozro Baldwin ran a three-line ad for raspberry plants in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Farm Journal. He received orders for all of his plants and the next year several hundred folders were sent out quoting prices for strawberry and cane plants. The mail-order

Where Weko Beach Got Its Name

The Lake Michigan Shoreline in Bridgman became popular in the 1920’s. Partners Henry Weber and Bruno Kolander built a

waterfront pavilion on the beach, which to this day carries the name they formulated from the first two letters of their last names… Weko Beach. Their pavilion became a popular destination for residents and visitors from all around, particularly Chicago. Today the Weko Beach House sits on the pavilion’s site, and is run by the City of Bridgman as one of the most attractive public beaches in the region. The building continues to provide food and fun to residents and visitors alike. Photos: City of Bridgman www.bridgman.org

About Our Cover Bridgman High School participated in a Cover Art contest for this years guidebook. Their only criteria was to submit artwork that depicted or made them think about Weko Beach. We received almost 40 submissions and had a very difficult time choosing a winner! We selected Emily’s painting “Lake Michigan Sunset” for our cover and wanted to showcase some of the other amazing works that were submitted to us. Emily won, appropriately enough, a Weko Beach package consisting of a beach bag and towel and a season pass to the beach. Congratulations to Emily and to all the students who submitted their innovative and creative works of art, with special thanks to Bridgman High School art teacher Pam Carlson! Cover Artist Winner: A - Emily Sarra Honorable Mentions in Mixed Media: B - Hunter Vines C - Gabriella Warden Honorable Mentions in Graphic Design: D - Anna Taylor E - Logan McFall F - Madi Ales
