MINIANO HOUSE

As requested by Sir Elmer Miniano and Family August-October 2023

Area: 130 sqm.

Set in a remote farm outside the city, the Miniano House is intended to be a vacation home for Sir Miniano and his wife, an elederly couple. Additionally, four bedrooms were included into the design to accomodate their extended family. To express the client’s need for communal spaces, the programme is split into quadrants. The upper balconies of the North, East, and West Wings and the family room located South on the first floor are joined by a bridge and stairway within a two-storey circulation. allow for natural light to permate into the interior while the tall ceiling, pitched roof and louvres allow for passive cooling while providing visibility to the communal areas.

Led by Ross J. Cocks as part of his undergraduate thesis, the Wieringa Wall implements an aperiodic mathematical sequence that produces acoustic dissipating properties and was commissioned by the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences. The work I have contributed to this project has granted me the John and Myrna Daniels Foundation Oppprtunity Award.

My tasks include:

1 Painting of expanded polystyrene (EPS)

2 Applying contact cement and adhering Formica tiles to the EPS

The second level of Drafting and Detailing focuses on designing and building a massing model of a two-storey steel frame structure on an 8640 sqm. property. In addition to the preparation of working drawings, I was also responsible in ensuring that the design were in accordance to the Ontario Building Code (OBC). The working drawings include: Site Plan, Floor Plans, Longitudinal Section and Elevations. Aside from the main programme of the facility, I was required to design for fifty parking spaces, a car entrance from the street to the facility, a truck lane for a twelve meter semi trailer and a retention pool.

meters, the Lunch Room has the biggest floor area for Employee Facilities and is meant to be inhabited by twenty five men and twenty five women. Surrounded by transitory spaces that connect the Front office to the warehouse. The double door entry of the Lunch Room provides rhythmic relief while the high windows allow natural sunlight to permeate.

For many shift workers, the carpool has been an economic means of transportation. It also acts as a space for encounter which boosts morale and camaraderie. The social setting created by the carpool extend towards the main faciltiy. The Lunch Room, aside from being a space for rest will also function as a panoptic space that is used to leer outwards to the parking lot to see if the carpool has arrived.

For this pilot course, groups of three qualifying architecture and engineering students are tasked to provide research proposals for the participating client. Our client, Rhonda Silver of Hollend Furnishings requested for a design to be used by students in a group work setting. The course demanded for a Design Specification document that detailed an executive summary containing a Problem Statement, Project Scope and Proposed Designs.

Across the three prototypes, the Isolation Chair produced favorable results particularly a 30% decrease in surrounding visual data and a 17% decrease in the perceived Total Room Distribution of sound. Thus, the engineering team has deemed it to provide the best solution to the client’s needs. Also, our collaboration allowed us to decide the dimensions of the design which adequately suit our objectives and constraints.

My proposal aims to provide agency to how individuals use public space in a post-COVID19 world. It is located outside New College, an events venue at the University of Toronto. Above is the public space where people, including drivers, have vanished due to a post-pandemic culture that killed life on the streets. In contrast, paintings usually hung indoors recall the safety of the home. By installing paintings on the exterior, it gives the viewer a sense of intimacy to the outside. Thus, I propose twelve paintings on each face of the six benches adjacent to the building.

Additionally, sets of wooden panels inserted on each bench will also be installed to provide a sense of playfulness to be used accordingly by the user.

WINDROSE COMPETITION

The Mound at Downsview Park, Toronto XOXO Downsview in collaboration with Future Simple November 07, 2022

My proposal for a temporary installation was driven by the word settlement. I began by taking photos of the site and making a collage out of the objects that engaged with its artificiality. With Downsview’s proximity to Little Manila, I also wanted to comment on immigration

and how the Filipino festive spirit continues to be part of their placemaking. As such, my material of choice were banners hung in the pattern of the mound’s contour. This proposal was honorably mentioned and archived on the XOXO website.

HYPERLOOP DESERT CAMPUS

Nevada, USA. 36O25’52.8”N, 115O25’05.8”W

Competition Submitted on September 23, 2020

The competition required us to design a test centre for a hyperloop that is located a few kilometres away from Las Vegas. The intent of the design is to entice the brightest minds of the world to come to the Desert Campus to collaborate on the future of transportation. Various lifestyle spaces and workspaces are conveniently interwoven with each other to promote the Campus as a place where science and creativity flourishes.

My responsibilities include:

1 To design the Main Hall which will function as a consulate space for the public. The Receiving Area will accomodate traffic from both tourists and onlookers. Furthermore, the Main Hall will have a museum that communicates to the public the development and future of the Hyperloop.

2 To design the laboratory in which scientists, designers and engineers can test prototypes.

Right: The Main Hall is a section in a looped plan that reaches out to the upper level offices and an underground parking to the left, the museum and a ramp that leads to the classrooms on the right, and a descending ramp to the front leading to the arena, the design imagines a series of interconnected circulation systems that loops around itself similar to the route of a rail system thereby encouraging exploration. The Main Hall allows one to easily shift between layers of underground and upper floors through the use of ramps providing a constant feel of speed and dynamism.

Bottom: The underground complex functions as a terminal for movement thorughout the facility. The extents of the underground show three circular complexes, with each connecting to different parts of the Campus, as well as a Laboratory and a Parking lot at its opposing ends. Aside from offices and storage facilities, the Laboratory will have a hypreloop tube for testing prototypes.
