WHO DONE IT? Throughout the past few weeks, many Andover students have had their cars “egged.” The majority of the incidents have happened on the same night or over winter break. There have been a few reports of this to the Andover Police Department. Junior Chase Oberg was one of the students whose car was egged. “It happened the night of the eighth. I was at a friend’s house but didn’t notice it until the next day,” Oberg said. Junior Will Valentas’ car was also egged. “I got egged Friday night and noticed it the next day. When I saw my car the eggs were frozen,” Valentas said. Officer Heath Kintzel and the police department have heard about some of these incidents. Doing permanent damage to someone’s personal property is considered vandalism by law. “The incidents that have happened in Andover and that have been reported to police are documented,” Kintzel stated. Kentzel explained what the police force is doing as the incidents are being investigated. “The patrol officers are patrolling the neighborhoods, and we would welcome any reports from citizens regarding suspicious activity that they see or reports regarding who has participated in the activity after an incident,” Kintzel said.

A note to the readers... The following was reported in the Bluestreak Tuesday, December 15, 2015. “In Kansas, statutory rape (sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 14) is considered a misdemeanor, not a felony.” As defined by the Kansas Legislature, sexual intercourse with a child under 14 committed by a perpetrator over the age of 18 is considered an off-grid person felony (as opposed to nonperson act such as forgery). The grid is a way of determining the sentence for a particular crime, based on the severity of the crime and the past criminal record of the defendant. Most offgrid felonies are quite serious, punishable by death penalty or life imprisonment. To clarify the statement that was printed in the Bluestreak, the age of the defendant comes into play in relation to how the crime is categorized—for example, as statutory rape, indecent
liberties with a child, or unlawful voluntary sexual relations, just to name a few. Regarding the age of consent, in Kansas it is 16 years of age when it is between heterosexuals. A handful of states have close-in-age exemptions for those aged 14 or 15. These exemptions, often occurring alongside parental consent of those involved, factor lesser penalties for consensual sexual intercourse between a person who is 14 or 15 and a person who is less than five years older. One of the many reasons so-called “Romeo and Juliet” laws exist is to reduce the severity of certain offenses (as in the case of consensual sex between two minors, for example) to misdemeanors.

The students were all ready to dance it out at the 2016 Glow Stick Get Down after the home game against Goddard. Winter Homecoming usually takes place at the end of February but this year, it was the first Friday in January. Andover started the semester off with spirit week that many students participated in. StuCo thought of unique themes that are not very common. However, one of the favorite themes was pajama day on Monday. Senior Trevor Newton and Senior Jenna Rose were crowned Homecoming King and Queen before the Varsity boys’ basketball game. After the win against Goddard, the two shared a dance together at Glow Stick Get Down. The dance was a great way to kick off the new semester as well as the New Year. “I thought Glow Stick Get Down was so fun this year! I was more excited for this dance than I was for the one last year,” junior Julia Miller said. She also shared her favorite part of the dance. “It was a blast getting to dance with my best friends. I think it was more fun for everyone this year,” Miller said. Many students agreed that the music was new and improved. A varsity win and a successful dance was a fantastic way to start the new semester.

Many AHS students turn to coffee and the caffeine found in coffee to help them wake up and take on the school day. Coffee shops and gas stations serve several forms of this caffeinated drink. Bluestreak staffers, Grace Ball, Josie Beaver and Emily Stybr, travel to these places to judge which bean comes out on top. Taste, price, presentation and location are all put into the final overall score of coffee cups.

AHS Marching Band Traveled to San Diego, California for Holiday Bowl Hobbit movie. The ride was very long and we were forced to find ways to pass and on every charter bus not a student was the time. The second we reached the borstirring. The Andover High School Trojan der patrol stop we all thought the same Marching Band packed up and prepared thing: ‘Mafia.’ for a 28-hour drive through sand dunes, “We got a lot of people to participate mountains of rocks, and miles of cacti – not in mafia on the bus. It was entertaining to mention a border patrol checkpoint- on the way to San Diego, California. The Holiday and it helped to pass the time,” senior Jessica Gorton said. Bowl game between USC and UW Madison We reached San Diego around seven featured a halftime show that high school bands would play in. The first leg of the trip o’clock Sunday night. We headed to Bonita Cove for a bonfire and cookout. We was a 16-hour drive to Holbrook, Arizona. got to the hotel around nine that evening If we were to count all the mishaps on and, after unpacking students, had time the trip, the first began before we even left to hangout and get rested for the next Andover. The original road trip called for day. three charter busses and one 15-seat van. Chula Vista is a region in San Diego At the car rental place that morning, Mr. Linthat is fairly local. The Otay Ranch area ville was informed that due to legal issues, was in the suburbs and the high school the company could not lease a large vehicle there is where we practiced on the field to a school. Mr. Linville had to rent two for the half time performance two days smaller vans instead. The first few hours on my bus were dead silent. Everybody was later. “During rehearsal I met two trumpet passed out. Some kids were substituting players from Louisiana. It was pretty shoulders for pillows, windows for head cool; we talked about how their Christrests, and even a few kids slept in the aislemas was eighty-seven degrees!” senior -not sure how safe that is--while others Carson Danks said. sprawled out in the few extra seats. The Monday after rehearsing with sevdrive was fairly easy until after supper. On eral other high school bands, we headed the last few hours the buses were subjected to the San Diego Zoo, about 30 minutes to drive five miles per hour in one inch of away from Chula Vista. After the zoo snow. We did not get to the hotel until 1:30 we went to Seaport Village. This quirky a.m. The next day we drove another 12 hours shopping area was across from Coronado – a Naval Base. Across the water, Navy to San Diego. We passed sand dunes on ships lit up the docks. our right and could see the Mexican border Tuesday morning we rehearsed at fences on our left. A few hours later when Otay Ranch High School again. Afterpassing into California, there were gigantic boulders piled high on the sides of the road- wards we headed to Belmont Park, -just imagine the rock giants in the second

located on Mission Beach. Students walked around the amusement park, found local pizza shops and hole-in-the-wall Mexican joints and found all sorts of interesting things on the beach from seahorses to sand dollars. “The sharks probably wait for Kansas kids to come swim in the Pacific Ocean, because, you know, we all did!” senior Nicole Klusener said. After the beach we headed to SeaWorld. After exploring the park for a couple of hours, we met back at the pavilion where a dinner and dance was hosted for all high school bands participating in the Holiday Bowl parade and halftime show. “At SeaWorld a bird stole a fish out of my hand when I was holding it for a sea lion,” Gorton said. Aside from the 159 students, there were also many parent chaperones on the trip. Some parents were on the buses with us while others drove the vans. “It was fun having my dad there as a chaperone. I could drag him wherever I wanted at the zoo instead of waiting for a group. The chaperones did a good job taking care of us. They made sure everybody was where they were supposed to be and nobody got lost,” freshman Sarah McDavitt said. Wednesday was our last day in San Diego. The weather was nice and we got up early and headed to San Diego Harbor to prepare for the parade. We got to the parade area about two hours early so we were forced to occupy ourselves until it was time to move. “We saw people dressed up as Star Wars characters before the parade. It was awesome,” senior Kristi Neas said. After the parade, the band went to Fashion Valley Mall Center for lunch. We spent the afternoon hanging out, shopping, packing, or resting. It was a short trip, as the
two-day journey home required us to leave the next morning. The Holiday Bowl Wednesday night was very crowded. We got our own section and everybody bundled up in blankets and got ready for an entertaining game – and an even more entertaining halftime performance. The halftime performance that night consisted of snippets from classic artists including Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and The Beatles. After the Holiday Bowl, we headed back to the hotel. The next morning we left for home, planning to spend New Years Eve in the most exciting place imaginable – Holbrook, Arizona. We headed home, exhausted from watching Wisconsin crush USC but still happy. “Sleep level was at a minimum, but enjoyment level was at a maximum. Getting to spend time with my friends and meeting new people made the trip worth it,” junior Nate Bergman said. On the way home the next morning, we ran into more complications. Bus Two broke down on the side of the road. It was a strange area to stop at. Imagine Breaking Bad-territory with zero people, more broken glass, take away the drugs, and add graffiti-tagged houses--abandoned, of course. That night we passed through Winslow, Arizona and took pictures; a town famous for being mentioned in the song “Take It Easy” by The Eagles. The second day consisted of movies, sleeping, and more sleeping. We arrived in Andover at around 1:00 a.m. on January 2. The unfortunate thing about our band is that when marching season is over, we split into two separate bands for concert season. The great thing about San Diego for myself and other seniors is we all got to be together again. We had one last halftime-performance in front of 60,000 people. San Diego was an amazing experience thanks to our amazing directors and parents who supported us. Being a part of the Trojan Marching Band was worth the 28-hour drive, because it was a ride we won’t forget.

Debate has had one of their most successful years yet. This is the fourth time in history that Andover High School has had a team qualify for nationals. To prepare for tournaments the teams practice against each other, write arguments, as well as research their assigned topic and current events. The team is given one topic to learn about and debate during tournaments. This year the topic they are debating is whether the federal government should reduce domestic surveillance. This topic is debated and state, as well as nationals. “We are only 5A in state so the competition is not as stiff as it could be. We will see some notable debate schools such as Blue Valley West, who consistently have excellent teams,” senior Cole Richardson said. The team, which consists of seniors Cole Richardson, Matt Madden, Caelan Dean, Cameron Fleming, juniors Wyatt Dodd, Andrew Colt, Isaiah Eaton, and sophomore Soham Dasgupta, took a trip to Olathe Northwest High School last weekend to compete at the state level. The team was fairly successful; Caelan Dean and Cameron Fleming finished in fourth place. “Getting to state is actually rather easy in debate, you have to have an equal amount of wins and losses

in at least three tournaments. Nationals is far more prestigious to qualify for in debate,” Cole Richardson said. To qualify for nationals, the debate team had to place in the top four at the Sunflower National Speech and Debate Association District Tournament. After State, Andover’s top team of Cole Richardson, Cameron Fleming, Kyle Richardson, and Caelan Dean, will travel to Salt Lake City, Utah to compete in Nationals among the most elite debate teams in the United States. Andover has qualified two teams to compete in nationals, which is an incredible achievement considering there are only four slots in Andover’s district. “Nationals is a major accomplishment for our team this year. I am quite nervous to go because we will be debating the best of the best there. The tournament lasts about a week and I am really excited to go,” Cole Richardson said. “I am proud of how hard the team worked this year and all we have accomplished. This has been one of the most successful debate teams we have had. Going to nationals is an amazing experience and it will be a great way to finish the high school careers of the debaters going,” debate coach James Harris said. -elizabethHARTLEY

Andover students attend theater workshops On January 7-9, Andover High School theater students had the opportunity to go to the Kansas Thespian Conference. The Thespian Conference is held in downtown Wichita at Century II. Students from all over the state travel to Wichita for this event. The schedule is packed full of activities and workshops starting at 7:15 a.m. and going as late as 11:30 p.m. These workshops include dance classes, yoga and costume makingsessions. “My favorite part was getting to see several shows with so many talented people. It inspires me to be a better performer,” freshman Liz Raehpor said. Students were also encouraged to compete in solo acts. Junior Levon Mathis competed and received the highest rating of “superior” for his solo act. Mathias competed in the Solo Musical Theatre category and performed “Don’t Let Me Go” from “Shrek the Musical.” Any student who receives a superior rating can also compete in the International Thespian Festival. The University of Nebraska is hosting the International Thespian Festival from June 20-15. Mathis plans to attend and compete this summer. “I enjoyed watching the shows
that got adjusted (picked) to perform one act because it shows what other high schools are doing in their theater departments,” Mathis said. Hanna Watson was one of four State Thespian Officers. To receive this honor Watson had to first be elected president of Andover’s theater department, Thespian Troupe #3540, making her eligible to be on the state board. “At the first [thespian] board meeting of the year, I submitted my resume and a speech along with about 20 others. The other state board members voted for the top eight candidates. Then the teachers reviewed our resumes and Ms. Koehn was able to advocate for me and the teachers voted for the top four to become State Thespian Officers and I was one of them,” Watson said. After the three day conference, many of Andover’s thespians could agree that they were tired. “It was exhausting with all the classes you could go to and the shows you could watch, but it was all worth it,” Mathis said. “I got to see how happy everyone was to be at the conference because of all the hard work of so many people. And I met some stupendous individuals,” Watson said. -sophieBRAYNOCK

Presidential Candidates Prepare for Upcoming Election As the 2016 presidential race continues to unfold, many American citizens have started to form solid opinions on their favorite (and least favorite) presidential candidates. An average of polls on realclearpolitics.com declares Hillary Clinton as the current frontrunner of the Democratic candidates. Hillary Clinton has served as the United States Secretary of State, a U.S. Senator representing New York, and the First Lady of the United States. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont is behind Clinton, with former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley following him. As the campaigns trudge on, many new stances are revealed and the polls show how American citizens react to these revelations. On the issue of guns, Clinton is a strong advocate for gun control. Clinton is against shielding gun manufacturers from lawsuits and adamantly for tighter gun restrictions. Sanders, though, has a more middleground take on gun control. While Sanders is in favor of background checks and wants to do away with the gun show loophole, he does not believe that gun manufacturers should be held legally responsible for mass shootings. Both Clinton and O’Malley, as well as many left-wing citizens, have criticized Sanders for this. O’Malley is also an advocate for tough enforcement of gun laws and is a critic of the National Rifle Association. With the recent controversy surrounding Planned Parenthood, the candidates’ stances on women’s reproductive health and access to reproductive care are on everybody’s minds. Clinton is pro-choice and strongly advocates for access to reproductive care. Clinton’s official campaign website states that she strives to make abortion “safe, legal, and rare.” Sanders believes that it is a woman’s right to choose and has a lifetime pro-choice record in addition to a lifetime record of voting in favor of funding family planning. O’Malley urges that abortion is a decision made between a woman and her doctor. He also supports stem-cell research and federal abortion funding. The top three Democratic candidates all seem to be disappointed in the state of income and wealth inequality in the United States. Clinton’s campaign website outlines a proposed plan that will “restore a government of, by, and for the people—not just the wealthy and well-connected.” Sanders is also outraged by the imbalance of wealth and favors raising taxes. O’Malley, while he has not been particularly outspoken about the topic, does favor raising taxes for the wealthy and lowering taxes for the middle and lower classes. When it comes to immigration, Clinton believes that the only solution is a pathway to full and equal citizenship. Sanders, as a son of an immigrant, also believes that a path to citizenship is a good start to improving the current immigration situation. O’Malley focuses his immigration reform plan on authorizing immigrants and providing immediate relief from deportation. Overall, the Democratic candidates’ campaigns have focused on a multitude of issues, including gun control, women’s rights, the state of the economy, and immigration. This is just a small fraction of the issues that matter to the American people, but they seem to be a focus of many rallies and events. The Democratic race itself is definitely one to watch in the coming months. *All statistics as of 1/21/2016

In the upcoming presidential election there are three Republican candidates who stand out. Donald Trump is the frontrunner, followed closely by Ted Cruz, with Marco Rubio trailing behind. In order to try and gain votes and show why they should become president, these candidates have loudly voiced their views on the topics of gun rights, immigration and minimum wage. These are some of the hot button topics about which people are very specifically opinionated. In light of the recent mass shootings in places like San Bernardino, Calif. and Charleston, S.C., gun control has become one of the biggest issues today. Conservatives want to loosen gun laws. This may seem strange to some, but in the eyes of most Republicans, it is one way to put protection into the hands of people. Most Republicans tend to agree that no matter what laws are put in place, guns will continue to get into the hands of the bad guys. The real issue is that bad guys already buy them illegally, so why make it harder to get guns into the hands of good, law-abiding citizens who want to protect themselves? If you look at where these shootings happen, it is occurring in the places with the strictest gun laws. For example, the San Bernardino shooting took place in a state with some of the strictest gun laws in the country. According to smartgunlaw.org, there a limit on the number of handguns a citizen may buy in a month, and there is no conceal-and-carry anywhere in the state. Donald Trump believes wholeheartedly that taking away guns is an infringement on the Second Amendment and plans to take away an executive order put in place by President Obama for gun control. His plan is focusing on programs to get criminals off the streets, then trying to create programs to restrict guns. Ted Cruz has focused heavily on trying to loosen arms restrictions in the strictest states so that citizens can get the protections the need. Marco Rubio is really diminishing the infamous reputation of guns by keeping them out of the hands of the people with the potential to do the most harm. Another issue for all the presidential candidates is illegal immigration. The conservative point of view opposes illegal immigration and giving citizenship to anyone who has come illegally. There is an influx of people that the economy cannot support. According the Department of Homeland Security, the average number of people obtaining lawful permanent resident status per year (2005-2012) is 1.08 million. Many conservatives take the view that such a high number of new citizens every year takes jobs away from teens, blue-collar workers, and in some cases upper-class citizens. Letting in too many people would eventually result in lowering the country’s economic strength to the point where the wages would equal those of the developing countries where the immigrants originated. Although each candidate has his or her own plan, there are different solution proposals for helping fight the ongoing controversy. Again and again, all three of the leading candidates have advocated for securing the border first, then passing legislation. Another crucial issue that is of concern to many people is the federal minimum wage. The crux of the problem is that many working adults on minimum wage do not make enough income to support their families and want to see the minimum wage raised to $15 per hour. To some, this may seem like a great idea, but the Republican Party does not want to change this. Why not? With such a change there are a lot of problems that can be overlooked. First, take a look at what minimum wage was originally intended for. In 1938 under the Fair Labor Act, a law was passed in which no one could make less than a certain hourly wage, so as not to be taken advantage of by employers. Now some may believe it should be more, but the idea behind minimum wage is that it is to be a starting amount for teens and young adults while giving them incentive to work their way up in the labor force. It was not meant to support families for an extended period of time. Another problem is that, if there is an increase in the minimum wage, it will trigger inflation, making all goods and services more expensive. If employers have to pay their workforce an additional $7.75 per hour, then it is more expensive to provide services and manufacture goods. With so much more money being distributed, it lowers the value of the dollar again. Right now, it may seem appealing to get paid so much more, but in the long run all that new money earned will go straight to paying higher prices. The Republican candidates have some plans to help this.

Every vote counts As the presidential election approaches, candidates, political issues, and votes are on everyone’s minds. High schoolers are beginning to pay attention; we’re starting to learn how we feel about the major issues. We’re discovering who we are, and that includes political party association. “Am I more Republican or Democratic?” “Is abortion a woman’s right?” “What is health care and should anyone get it just for living in America?” Things we’ve never thought about are spending more and more time running through our minds. I, for one, have begun watching and reading the news (almost religiously) every day. In this day and age, news sources can take almost any form, from social media platforms to classic newspapers. I want to be informed on current events so I can form my own opinions with good conscience. We’re turning 18 and becoming “real” citizens with our age. The Bluestreak tweeted a poll asking students how important they feel voting is. The majority of voters (ha-ha) feel that voting in elections is very important. Even at the local level for sheriffs and mayors, every vote counts. You have to know what you think and what you want to cast an informed vote. Just imagine if every eligible voter thought, “Man, it’s just one vote. What’s it matter if I do it?” No one would vote! Nothing would get done and incompetent people would be in positions of power! Is that a world you want to live in? A lot of non-voters I’ve met argue that the candidate with the most financial support will win regardless of the people’s votes. I see their point, but I also know that we vote, then the Electoral College votes (hopefully) based off the majority. The College is to vote for the people, based off the people’s wants and needs. Seniors groan at attending government classes and sometimes fail to realize the importance. We have to know how our government works to be able to run it through representative democracy. Taking a course with a purely governmentbased curriculum is actually very beneficial. I learned a lot about government organization, funding, and procedure. We studied topics I’d never even considered. Even with the recent issues in American society, we are truly blessed to live on this great country. Government is so much worse in so many other places around the world. At least (for the most part) we don’t worry about our family members being stoned to death for petty crimes, or that our fathers will be taken in the night and shot while we watch. The United States government is facing great turmoil if you ask many citizens. But without active voters, it could be even weaker. Remember to register to vote even if you turn of age in a non-Presidential election year—there are always local and federal elections you can partake in. Citizen participation is what fuels a Representative Democracy like ours.

Intersectional Feminism Carrie Friend Why “white feminism” is an issue Feminism has been around since the 1800’s but our generation has taken a huge interest in it due to the help of social media. Feminism is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities politically, socially, and economically. A common misconception of feminism is that feminists hate men, or that they deserve more than men. The biggest idea that some feminists leave out is to include equal rights for every person. Some of the most well known feminists include: Nicki Minaj, Amandla Stenberg, Malala Yousafzai, and Beyonce. Malala Yousafzai might be a name a lot of people won’t recognize, but she has done an incredible amount for women all around the world. Malala is a Pakistani girl who basically believes everyone deserves an education; at just 18 years old she opened an all-girls school near Syria. Malala was targeted and shot by the Taliban because they didn’t like the changes she was making in the world. While she was in critical condition, she collected over 2 million signatures, which led to the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Bill. Nicki Minaj mainly advocates the racial issues of feminism. In 2015 she called out award shows for continuously ignoring the contributions of black women in the media. Nicki was seen as a “stereotypical angry black woman” after she called out Miley Cyrus at an awards show, which made Nicki appear in the wrong. Pop culture sources that covered this issue would regularly put a picture of Nicki scowling next to a picture of Miley smiling; it’s the little details that shows biasness in the media. Nicki is also a huge supporter of education and routinely tells her fans how important getting an education is. A lot of feminists we see in the media have a general idea of feminism but they are not grasping the overall concept of it. The term known as “white feminism” is best used to describe feminists who ignore intersectionality; it generally excludes anyone that is not white, cisgender, and straight. The best example for understanding white feminism is a white feminist will recognize the wage gap between
men and women, but a feminist will recognize not only that, but also the even worse wage gap for black and Latino women. A few white feminists are: Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Amy Schumer, and Jennifer Lawrence. They are not bad people because they are white feminists; they just have a lot they need to educate themselves on. Taylor Swift displays white feminism in her music video for “Blank Space” by actually glamorizing dating violence; there are many scenes where she is abusive to her boyfriend in the video, but then she plays the victim role. Every love interest that has been shown in her videos has been a fit, upper class, white guy. Even in her music video for “Bad Blood” she exemplifies absolutely no diversity. We see non-white women in her music video for “Shake It Off” but unfortunately she only shows them dancing somewhat vulgarly. Amy Schumer would be considered a white feminist because not only does she disregard issues other races face, but she often makes fun of people of other races than her. She does not usually say things that are directly offensive but rather things that are uncalled for. If she wants to consider herself a feminist, she needs to include people of all races and sexualities. Feminism is not just believing men and woman should be equals, but it is recognizing the whole LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual) community and supporting each other. It is sometimes difficult for us in the United States to see why feminism is so important, but around the world feminists are changing lives. A bigger issue we face here is the wage gap, but in Saudi Arabia, women still do not even have the right to vote. Feminism needs to stop being looked down upon; too often do we hear, “Wait, you’re a feminist?” in a rather demeaning voice. It is not at all uncommon for men to be feminists; it doesn’t make you “less masculine.” Some famous men that classify themselves as feminists are: Daniel Radcliffe, Mark Ruffalo, John Legend, Ryan Gosling, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Will Smith, and Barack Obama. If more people were not so threatened by the thought of feminism, we would have a lot more successful feminists.

Making a Murderer Murderer
The popularity of new Netflix series has caused controversy amongst students of Andover

Among award-winning, well-known movies and TV shows, “Making a Murderer” has found its way onto the Netflix “most-popular ‘ list. The Netflix original series explains the story of an innocent man who was incarcerated for 18 years with the presumption that he had attempted to rape and kill a woman named Penny Beernsten. After they looked back into the case they discovered someone else had a match in DNA for the crime he was convicted of, and he was released. The main character, Steven Avery, is quickly arrested again for a different crime. In 2007 a photographer who was close to the Avery family, Teresa Halbach, was found murdered; the evidence makes it almost impossible not to believe Steven Avery was responsible. In 10 hours Making A Murderer shows surveillance footage, interrogations, courtroom proceedings, interviews and more. At this point it is left up to the audience to decide if they think Avery is an innocent or guilty man. As in any criminal case, there is much debate that comes with each piece of evidence that is presented to prove Avery is guilty. The evidence against Avery is remarkable, and it seems a bit too easy to distinguish his lack of innocence. The narration of the show implies there is a good chance of a conspiracy against him. The criminal justice system looked deplorable after they wrongfully convicted him, and Avery filed a lawsuit against them; some people believe they were trying to make themselves look better by making Avery look truly malicious while also avoiding the $36 million lawsuit against them. There are very strong signs that the evidence was tampered with in his 2007 arrest--most likely by the police. The biggest controversy would be, what motive did Avery have to murder Halbach? Many people finished the 10 episode show rather quickly but were still interested in his story. People have been looking into his case to decide for them-
selves whether or not they think Steven Avery is innocent. As much as no one wants to hear it, the directors of the show were definitely pushing his innocence, so much that they left out crucial evidence that might sway the viewer’s mind. Like any documentary, they won’t present every piece of evidence because that can quickly become boring to the viewer. Many key facts and evidence were not shown in the series. If the goal was to convince the viewer that Steven Avery is innocent, it is up to the viewer to decide if they succeeded or not. Regardless of if they achieved this goal, they did successfully show many major faults the Manitowoc police department made in both of Avery’s convictions. The documentary makes it appear that his ex-fiance was a big supporter of him but in fact she was the opposite. She was actually very frightened of him and claims he was abusive to her, and everyone around him. Considering how poorly the Manitowoc police handled his first prison sentence, it is hard for them to be a reliable source. Three local police officers were supposed to keep their distance from Avery after wrongfully putting him in jail, but they somehow continuously ended up at the “scene of the crime” numerous times. The directors of Making A Murderer are not just sure Avery is innocent, but they are doing almost anything they can to prove it. Not only is the show entertaining and informative, it also shows an inside look on how horrible it is to end up on the wrong side of the justice system. The introduction of this series brings attention to some of the murder cases that have happened in and around Wichita. Dennis Rader, better known as BTK, was found guilty of murdering 10 people over the course of 17 years. Nine out of ten of his victims were killed in Wichita.

The Carr Brothers
Dennis Rader “BTK”
Known for their involvement in the wichita massacre
Known for his murderous patterns of binding, torturing, and killing in the wichita area
The Carr brothers are best known for their spree of robberies, rapes, and murders throughout December of 2000. Since then, the brothers have been on and off death row. As of January 2016, their death sentences were reinstated. Jonathan and Reginald Carr had committed a long spree of crimes prior to The Wichita Massacre. While committing The Wichita Massacre, the house they bombarded was practically chosen at random, where the five people inside were robbed, assaulted, and murdered. The family was taken to an ATM, handed over all the money they could, and then taken to a soccer field in which each of them were shot. One victim, H.G., survived the gunshot to her head due to a barrette that was in her hair, and then reported it to the police; the brothers were taken into police custody the following day.
Dennis Rader, better known as BTK, is one of the most wellknown serial killers not only in Wichita, but throughout the Midwest. The name BTK comes from his signature meaning Bind, Torture, Kill. On the outside he seemed incredibly normal, he had a family, a degree, a steady job, and was heavily involved in his church. BTK began sending taunting messages to the police in the 1970’s and he ended in the early 2000’s. His first known victims were a family of four in 1974, and his last known murder was in 1991. BTK would often wait in his victim’s house for hours, waiting for them to come home. He would study them, and get to know them, so he could be sure there would not be flaws in his plan. In 2005 BTK sent a letter to the police department in which he asked if they could trace a floppy disc, and being fully aware that it WAS traceable, they told him it is not possible. In February of 2005 he sent a floppy disk, which they traced, back to his church, and then directly to him. He is currently serving 10 life sentences in the El Dorado Correctional Facility.

bowl A look into American football
If someone were to travel around a big city in the United States today and ask random citizens about the game of football, they would be extremely hard-pressed to find someone who did not hold an allegiance to a team or at least shows a genuine interest in the sport. Over the past forty years, American football has become more than a simple eleven-versus-eleven game played by men on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. The sport has become a cultural phenomenon that traverses generations and captivates onlookers from all across the world. Football is played in many different arenas in life, the most popular being college and professional. World significance for the sport was achieved, however, by the expert marketing and quality of play in the National Football League Playoffs, which culminate in the Super Bowl Game to decide the champion. Super Bowls are usually the most-watched event in America and draw astronomical ratings throughout the world. The event has become iconic throughout the world, and will be celebrating its fiftieth anniversary in 2016. The game is more popular than it has ever been. It was not always like this, however. Before the Super Bowl was called the “Super Bowl,” it was known simply as the “World Championship Game of Football,” and had a long way to go to reach the popularity figures it possesses today. The first world championship game between the champion American Football League (AFL) and the champion of the National Football League (NFL), which is the current designation of professional football, was played on January 15, 1967 in Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. It was the first time that two teams from the two divisions of professional football in the United States would face off against each other, which was a cause for public excitement. This was occurring due to a merger announced between the two divisions the year before. This first championship game would pit the AFL’s Kansas City Chiefs against the NFL’s Green Bay Packers. The Packers went into the game expecting to win, and the result reflected that. When the final whistle blew, the scoreboard showed a 35-10 Packer victory. Fans in Wisconsin celebrated accordingly, but the rest of the nation was rather unmoved. Tickets for the game did not even sell out, and photographs taken from the game reveal empty seats at kickoff. In today’s world, this seems surprising, but looking back at the time the country was going through, it is clear why there may not have been

a massive focus on athletics. With the Vietnam War and cultural unrest tearing through the country, the young people of America were too distracted to pay attention to something like this. This trend continued throughout the rest of the ’60s, but unsurprisingly, the end of the war paralleled a spike in the popularity of the sport. By 1970, the NFL was officially one league with two divisions, and football was more popular than ever. Soldiers coming home from war were captivated by the sport. As a result of this, along with the conclusion of the Woodstock Festival, the Super Bowl became the main live event in the United States annually. Although the popularity of the game became more widespread in the early seventies, no one would have been able to predict the phenomenon that the Super Bowl has become today. Viewers from all over the world tune in to watch the crowning of the World Champion of Football. Fans purchase tickets multiple years in advance to reserve their seats for the big game. All of televisions’ major networks focus on the buildup to the event and the celebration of the sport that it presents. People show up early to attend pep rallies and tour the town in the days leading up to the game. America’s biggest cities are in constant bidding wars to host the event, as the turnout provides an economic spike that can allow for a struggling city to get back on its feet or a prospering metropolis to reach new heights. The game itself is usually in the top two or even the most highly-rated television event of the year. Singing the national anthem before the game is considered a high honor, and the song is usually performed by a relevant musical sensation. The halftime show is presented like a concert for another musician, and is usually viewed by a large amount of people. Major companies spend millions of dollars for thirty-second commercials during the game. The Super Bowl commercial has become a famous idea in and of itself due to the fact that most companies debut new material for the game. Topping it all off, of course, is the game itself. It is an opportunity for the world’s best players to make their mark on the history of the game and claim a championship ring that will stick to their name for the rest of their lives. At the end of a legendary player’s career, he is judged not only by his personal performance but his compilation of championships, which shows how significant this game has become. When looking back on the way it all started, one must marvel at how the popularity of the game has risen dramatically over the years.

2015 Year OF Review Movies Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Krampus Krampus is a scary, Christmas-themed movie that came out December 4, 2015. In this movie, a family comes together for the holidays, but continues to bicker with each other. One of the children ends up ripping a letter he wrote to Santa, which summons something evil. All the fighting ends up summoning an “Evil Santa” that punishes naughty children. The Christmas spirit is lost but now they all must come together to survive this creature. The movie was considered to be very predictable by many students who have seen it. Krampus received a 2.4 out of 10 stars from IMDb. “It was more creepy than it was scary. Different things would pop out but it would be expected. You knew when the scary parts were coming so it kind of ruined it. Also, the end was predictable for me,” said junior Cami Saville. The movie made about $42,612,005 at the box office. Krampus is considered a horror and comedy but only succeeded as comedy to most people. It was shown in 2,902 theatres across the country. The movie is about an hour and thirty-eight minutes long. Some students shared they did not like that it came out around Christmas time because it was negative towards the holidays. Overall, this movie does not come highly recommended.

Apple Watch vs. Fitbit Ranging in price from $200 to over $1,000 the Apple Watch is said to be the perfect wearable companion. But starting at just $30, the Fitbit can do almost everything the Apple Watch is capable of, except for playing games. Something to consider is the Apple Watch is only compatible with other Apple products. On the other hand, with a heavily intended pun, some Fitbit models can sync with a variety of phones and tablets. It all comes down to a preference: Have an iPhone but can’t be bothered to use it? Get an Apple Watch. Have any other brand of smartphone and want to stay on track with an exercise routine? Get a Fitbit.

The Force Awakens was one of the most successful movies to come out in 2015. It was released December 18, 2015 and was sold out opening night at movie theatres around America. They finally continued the sequel after a long, ten-year break. In the movie, over 20 years had passed since the last Star Wars movie. Many of the main characters returned but had gotten older. There were also quite a few new characters. In the movie, the previous heroes and two new characters come together to hunt down the missing Jedi, Luke Skywalker. They must join forces with the Resistance in order to fight the First Order. The movie was not hard to follow even if the viewer had not seen the other Star Wars movies. This movie is completely unpredictable and is guaranteed to keep you on your toes. Although it was a sequel, the story line was easy to understand for all viewers. The movie is about two hours and twenty-five minutes long but every minute is action packed and enjoyable. This movie received 8.5 out of 10 stars according to IMDb. Star Wars made around $812,011,043 and was number one at the box office. It is a must-see movie even for people who are not huge Star Wars fans. It follows the other Star Wars movies very well. Being one of the most popular movies to come out in 2015, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is considered a must-see film.

2016 Games While 2015 seemed to be the year of good indie games, people hoping for a repeat this year could be sorely disappointed. While Minecraft is still selling strong, at about 8,000 copies a day, it was a new indie game, Undertale, that managed to steal the spotlight after three years. With that in mind, 2016 might be a good year for indie games. But what about a new “triple A” title? Well, most big name companies release a fantastic game every four years. Unfortunately, last year seemed to be the year when almost all of the new AAA titles were released. So that leaves 2016 as the year when most companies will be trying to slip something out and get back to work on the next big thing, while new indie companies could have a whole year to themselves. -stuartJENKINS
Music Justin Bieber- Purpose Late in 2015, Justin Bieber released his highly anticipated album Purpose. Following a period of personal issues and musical inactivity, Bieber came back with a fairly strong electro-pop album with stylish R&B accents throughout. Bieber also co-wrote all the songs on the album, perhaps evoking a more adult and personal side of him. The album kicks off in a rather laid-back way with “Mark My Words.” Bieber’s own background vocals are prominent throughout the song and enhance the main melody. Lyrically, it is one of the weaker songs on the album and, in all, it is a bit anticlimactic for the first song. But it gets much better from there, as Purpose’s mainstream singles appear. The lead single “What Do You Mean” has an infectious beat and Bieber’s trademark harmonies with himself. The Ed-Sheeran-penned “Love Yourself” has Sheeran’s signature “tell-it-like-it-is” ring. Bieber croons, “Had never felt so low when I was vulnerable/Was I a fool to let you break down my walls?” The light guitar sounds and unaccredited background vocals from Sheeran make this song a nice, slow jam. “Sorry” is one of the most unique songs. Produced by up-and-coming musician Skrillex, it has tropical influences, sonically pleasing complexion and a catchy beat that makes this song an enjoyable one, even for non-Beliebers. Musical accents of synthesizers and Bieber’s own processed vocals provide nice contrast to the melody: “Is it too late now to say sorry? “Sorry” was a smash hit in the U.S. It is certified 2x Platinum in the United States, selling over 2 million copies. It probably could have been an even bigger success on the charts, but Adele’s “Hello” was the number one song for eight non-consecutive weeks, according to Billboard. Bieber collaborated with rapper Big Sean again on Purpose, producing a solid R&B track, “No Pressure.” It has a smooth sound and an easygoing feel; Big Sean’s verse is fluent and crisp. Other songs on the album include “The Feeling,” featuring rising star Halsey, and dance track “Where Are Ü Now” featuring Skrillex and Diplo. The title track and “Life is Worth Living” are piano ballads that Bieber tries to convey more emotion than in the upbeat pop songs. The most dismal thing about Purpose is Bieber’s use of pitch-correcting software. Proved by Bieber’s many live performances and early YouTube videos, it is evident that Bieber has some natural talent, but his true vocal ability is hidden behind the effects throughout Purpose. The album goes for a futuristic feel, with leaps taken from typical mainstream pop to slick electric dance music, but quite often Bieber’s vocals are too bionic to adequately respect the songs themselves. Nonetheless, the whole album has infectious beats and hooks. Skrillex produced many of the top songs and Bieber’s risk to work with him truly paid off. Bieber’s departure from the world of bubblegum pop brings Purpose, a refreshing pop album with many musical influences, skilled production, and more than anything, a more mature Bieber.
Coldplay-”Adventure of a Lifetime” London-based band Coldplay released their seventh album A Head Full of Dreams last December. One of the singles released from the album, “Adventure of a Lifetime”, is a captivating pop song with a catchy loop reminiscent of an Indian sitar. Lead singer Chris Martin and company have not yet failed to release something different with each single and this is no exception. The song is extremely cohesive to the ear, with a calm, rhythmic beat that makes you want to nod your head or tap your finger. Guitar sounds are light but lively with a nice groove. During some parts of the verses and chorus, percussion that sounds like tapping glasses is a nice touch to the light drum kit providing the rest of the foundation. The lyrics are by no means a masterpiece, but they do the song enough justice. Martin sings, “Said I can’t go on, not in this way/I’m a dream that died by light of day/Gonna hold up half the sky and say/Only I own me.” The song seems to metaphorically connect dreams and love, as Martin describes his heart beating under his skin. The music video, however, goes for a natural take on the song, portraying the band members as chimpanzees. Martin’s voice can be quite difficult to understand throughout the song. The instruments camouflage the vocals, and Martin’s accent shows in his rather hoarse tone of voice. However, the dreamy, inspiring instrumentals help pull this song together, as there is a sudden urge to explore the world, as the song title suggests. Does this song match the sophistication of “Yellow,” “Clocks,” or “Viva La Vida”? No, it does not even come close. Each of those other songs had much more emotion and more impressive lyrics, but “Adventure of a Lifetime” is a fun, upbeat song that any Coldplay fan would like to hear. Coldplay is preparing songs from A Head Full of Dreams and other albums for their Super Bowl X Halftime Show in February.

New Year, Same You? Starting a new year usually means creating new goals and resolutions. The New Year is a time to start fresh and create personal goals. This year, many students decided to share some of theirs. Freshman Cade Styles shared some of his. “This year I want to try to read the Bible more and start running again,” Styles said. He was looking forward to some New Year traditions as well. “I look forward to the football bowl games in the new year,” Styles said. When getting a girl’s point of view, there were some different resolutions. “One of my New Year’s resolutions is to start eating healthier. I always look forward to starting over and meeting new people each new year,” junior Sydnie Shupert said. New Year’s Eve is a great opportunity to spend time with friends and family. Many students agree that they are looking forwarding to “starting over” in 2016.
