The provenance of the missionary collection in the Afrika Museum Rosalie Hans
Introduction This article is part of the outcome of provenance research conducted on the collections of the Afrika Museum in Berg en Dal, the Netherlands, that were assembled by the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, the Catholic missionary society that founded the museum in 1954. During my research, it became clear that there are many untold stories about the museum collections, amassed from various African countries, and about the people who acquired them. The edited volume Forms of Wonderment (2002), published by the Afrika Museum in 2002, contains information about the collections. However, it focuses mainly on the objects’ art historical value and original use.
