The Story of De Bortoli

What began as a family story of triumph and determination around ninety years ago in warravaged Europe is now enunciated proudly around Australia after all these generations. The heritage of the winery surrounds the ubiquitous tale of immigrants making it big in a foreign land, their contribution to the wine industry of Australia and the story of an innovative and hardworking family who regards good friends, good food and good wine as the greatest pleasures of life.

The History of De Bortoli

In 1924, Vittorio De Bortolio began his travel to New South Wales from Castelcucco and arrived in Griffith in 1925. He found its red earth and flat plains too different from the hills of Treviso city of Italy. The year 1928 saw the birth of De Bortoli Wines when he purchased a 55-acre fruit farm. The glut of Shiraz grapes that year worked in favour of Vittorio and he got 15 tonnes of grapes for free and crushed them to make wine. As years went by, the demand for its wines increased, and they were transported to Queensland and Sydney.

The History of De Bortoli

The next generation of Vittorio, his son, Deen De Bortoli, joined his family-run winery and modernized the modus operandi of winery production in 1957. It was during the 1970s that he continued expanding De Bortoli Wines, and he played an instrumental role in introducing new wine to the entire breed of wine lovers at the time of Australia’s first-ever major ‘wine boom.’

The History of De Bortoli

Darren De Bortoli, the 3rd generation of De Bortoli’s, created the widely-acclaimed Notable One in 1982, bagging the trophy for the Best Botrytis Wine at the International Wine & Spirit Competition.

As the winery continued to grow over the coming years by purchasing vineyards, adding wineries, expanding off-shore branches, winning lots of awards, having diligent winemakers on board and creating quality wines, it achieved the milestone of celebrating 90 years in the winemaking business in 2019.
