Orlando Wines: Contemporary yet Classic
What can be the best wedding gift - A car? A house? or A vineyard? Well, it surely was a vineyard for Gustav Gramp who got Orlando as a wedding present from his father in 1874. Established by the Gramp family in Rowland Flat, Barossa Valley, Orlando is a home to many ‘firsts’ in the industry. The Orlando wines trademark came into being in 1912. It was recognized as one of the largest premium wine producers of Australia as a part of the Penfolds, Orlando & Lindeman’s Group during the century. Orlando introduced various innovative techniques enabling pioneering advancements in the industry that lead to the production of quality wines. Infact, they emerged as a powerhouse for technological transformation in Australia in the 50s and 60s and ever since then, they have continued on this path. In 1951, Orlando led the industry by importing temperature controlled pressure fermentation tanks from Germany for sparkling wine technological innovation. Furthermore in 1953, they introduced a revolutionary new method of table wine production using controlled fermentation methods. This gave birth to Barossa Riesling which turned out to be the best one at the Sydney and Melbourne wine shows.
History was created in 1956 when they introduced the first sparkling ‘Perlwein’ in Australia which was called Barossa Pearl out of love for it. This wine went down in social history as the first Australian sparkling wine produced by secondary fermentation in pressure tanks. In 1962, the Steingarten vineyard came into existence to deliver a style of Riesling that was not achieved in Australia till that point. These achievements and consistency by Orlando brought it the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy for its Barossa Valley Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon blend in 1971. The vineyard in South Australia released the first Jacaranda Ridge Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon with the 1982 vintage. In addition to that, 1990 saw the release of first Lawson’s Padthaway Shiraz with the 1984 vintage and 1996 witnessed the first Centenary Hill Barossa Shiraz with the 1994 vintage. The progressive approach to bring technical developments in the wine industry and deliver quality products has been at the very core of Orlando which has made their wines legendary. These wines have everything that is great about Australian classics, thus, never allowing them to go out of fashion. Curious to know more about Orlando wines?
