TIMELESS YET RELEVANT Design is ever-evolving and you have to stay with it

H

ow will I feel about this five years from now? When I was 25, I got my first big break; a break young designers only dare to dream of. It was a head-to-toe redesign for the iconic Bergdorf Goodman on Fifth Avenue. The opportunity of a lifetime, and I thought, Lord, I hope I know what I’m doing! Thankfully, I did. Young hopefuls (like myself once) often ask what it takes to lead a successful career in the industry. Aside from getting fabulously lucky, I say it takes tenacity and sheer determination. If you want to do it, go for it, and don’t ever stop. Taking an apprenticeship at a good design house or working with someone who is really, really fantastic at what they do is incredibly important. But there’s more to it than that. You must be willing to do the smallest tasks, and do them well. When you run out for fabric samples, pick up coffee, too. Saying yes – a big, exuberant yes –when truly you’d rather say no, will open doors you never knew existed... and will take you far. Of course, being successful in the world of design requires something else, too: passion. A deep love for the industry has always driven me. You don’t have to come from an exceedingly chic family with great or even good taste. I certainly didn’t. But when I was an adolescent, and other sixyear-olds were begging their parents for toy trucks and basketballs, I was asking for a dazzling crystal chandelier. Even now, with decades of experience and a certain, signature panache, I continue to seek out style. That’s the other key to success.

Stay in the know while staying true to yourself. Design is ever-evolving and you have to go with it to stay with it. ‘Going with it’ doesn’t mean you should forsake timeless classics. Today, I see design heading in a direction I like to call ‘tongue in cheek madness’; crazy things that are almost overly whimsical, but still fun. After this year’s Met Gala, camp is everywhere – in furniture, fabrics and room lettings. While I always appreciate a twist on the norm, part of being an excellent designer is asking yourself, how will I feel about this in five years? In two years? Will I still want to look at funky pinks, turquoises and palm trees? This is the thought process I endure when designing furniture or creating a design for a client – it is essential to stay relevant but also timeless. When you look back on projects you have done, they should still be classically beautiful, even after 15 years. Of course, to keep things fresh and balanced, a few additions or updates need to be made here and there too – maybe a vibrant new paint colour, for example. Making small adjustments, whether it’s upholstery or a finish, can make a piece feel and fit to the current setting years later. In my opinion, there are a couple of things that are guaranteed to remain timeless: animal prints and colour. I’ll never tire of either. Another thing I’ll never tire of is the opportunity to shape and inform clients by introducing them to new styles, to determine what look their space is telling you it needs and working with that perspective to give it the romance and look the client wants. At the end of the day, at the end of a project, you’ll know you’ve been successful if what you’ve created looks great to both you and your client.

THE LEATHER REVOLUTION Gone are the days of the brown and boring

W

e could call this article ‘the many faces of leather’. Gone are the days of brown, boring leather. In an age where people are embracing their individuality in all forms, leather has undergone an incredible evolution just in the past decade. Whether it’s a zesty green croc-embossed nubuck, or an acid-washed metallic hair-on-hide, leather is no longer only associated with the overly stuffy one-dimensional hue. This new era of creativity allows for aficionados and beginners alike to experiment with this natural material in ways that push the design envelope; elevating furniture to a luxurious level that even the most exotic fabrics cannot achieve. As a designer, my inspiration stems from travel and fashion, analysing the colours, textures, and variations in both realms to often discover a common thread or if I want to go against the grain – a unique outlier. The beauty of working with leather lies in its chameleon qualities, both visually and tactically. A classic cognac hide for example can take on warm undertones if you wrap it a certain way around the arm of a sofa. It will similarly exude a blue tint should the sun’s rays hit the sofa arm in a certain angle. With a material so malleable and forgiving, it’s no wonder there’s a wide range of types to cater to various lifestyles (even those with pets).

BRIDGE FOR DESIGN AUTUMN 2019

Current trends lean toward natural aniline leathers from Italy and Germany and a new emphasis has taken the stage to highlight protected leathers that are easy to clean. Colours that parallel nature’s palette are also increasing in popularity. From sea foam green to sapphire to marigold, both vibrant and pastel colours alike are embraced across all scales. Desert tones – sand, nutmeg, cherry mahogany – provide the ideal foil to these bold hues to lend harmony in a room. When I incorporate leather in my projects, my first step is identifying its role. Will this be a family sofa or a prim-andproper wing chair? The furniture’s purpose dictates the leather’s styling. Look beyond tufting, which often becomes the status quo because of its long time connection to leather, especially those vintage English chesterfields. With influences from fashion, adding a quilted pattern or channel stitching to a particular part on a leather piece, it is easy to add dimension and create a surprising play with shadows and lighting. Like mixing different metals in jewellery, you can also mix leathers, pairing a smooth indigo aniline with a crisp white snakeskin-embossed pattern, for an unexpected take on the classic blue-and-white motif. There’s also the merit of sustainability. While the world has adopted a more humane philosophy to the ecosystem, we must be reminded that faux-anything does more harm than real leather, which outlasts any man-made material. Equally, a focal point and a foundation building block in a room, a piece of leather furniture reflects a lifelong investment. Therefore, it’s important to look for protected leathers that are not only cleanable but also contribute to the leather’s lifespan because of its durability. We can honour Mother Nature’s beauty by upcycling leather to reduce unnecessary waste. We see a resurgence in leather becoming mainstream, except this time, it’s dressing up with unabashed flair, flourishing in homes across the world with their exotic textures and bold colour combinations. Because there are no rules when it comes to decorating with leather... your creativity sets the guidelines for masterpiece settings.

CURATING IS QUITE AN ART I love telling a client’s story through their collection

C

urating collections for clients is what I particularly enjoy. It allows me, as a designer, to dive deep and explore new areas of art and culture. Being someone who has always loved to travel, collecting became almost second nature. In creating a home for clients there is need for the home to tell a story and have a personality. Over the years, we have built numerous types of collections for clients, which have been everything from china to art objects. We have a client with an antique exclusive china pattern for Hermes, for example, and have searched the world over to increase her collection. One of the things that is difficult yet can be exhilarating is when you can find an entire or majority of a collection. I recently hit the jackpot while in London, at Nick Jones Antiques, finding an entire Wedgewood collection of fine pottery. Working with clients on their collections is a very personal endeavour and takes time and patience. I start by evaluating their collection, then determine if they have enough to fill the home, and take it from there. Art to me is very personal and I see to it that clients are extremely involved in the purchasing of the art and the coordination of their art collection. Most of our clients have more than one home and my theory is that we will always find a place for every piece of art. I am currently working with Joseph Guay, an amazing artist based in Atlanta. I have recommended his art to clients and even added a piece to my personal collection. The bold pieces made of (gun)shells,

metal and dark photography set off the interior and are real conversation starters. Joseph is known around the world. Many artists, like Picasso, who we’ve collected for clients, are so prolific and work in different mediums. In addition to paintings, Picasso produced amazing pottery. Personally, I have always coveted many designs by Richard Ginori, one of Italy’s greatest designers of fine china. I have 60-piece place settings of Palermo Black as well as Palmette. But I am always looking to add more to my collection. When starting to curate a collection one of the first things I do is turn to online resources, such as auction houses like Live Auctioneers. Online auctions represent many dealers across the country, and can therefore widen your approach. Not only is this a good place to shop but it is also inspirational. As we shop both internationally in cities like London and Paris, and domestically, we really like to take the time and map out a plan prior to any buying trip process. Our team compiles an extended list based on our client’s needs. We try to make sure we have all the dimensions needed for each item we are shopping for. I never leave home without full sets of fabric schemes because I feel certain the one time I do, I will find something that will not be a fit for the scheme. I then put on my favourite kicks and start walking! One of my favourite cities is London as there is so much to see. Ramsay Fine Art always has exclusive pieces and I worked with them to build a collection of Joan Miro. I’m also a huge fan of Les Trois Garçons. And one place not to be missed is Portuondo, for some of the finest furniture and accessories in the UK. Being based in one of the southern States, I often shop in Atlanta. I recently found a collection of black and white shell candlesticks at Interiors Markets. I also have really good luck at Foxgloves Antiques, with rock crystal bowls and fragments. It’s one thing to search and purchase a collection, but it’s another ballgame to curate and display it. When it comes to objects and items, we like groupings of three, most importantly odd numbers. It is like a city skyline with highs and lows. People always ask what makes up a collection. My rule of thumb is more than 10. Eight, you are getting close, 12, you are really moving. My advice is to always be on the lookout, you never know what you might find around the corner.

y business partner Bill Schilling and I have been passionately designing, manufacturing and installing bespoke luxury interiors in London and internationally for twenty-five years – although we prefer to call ourselves furniture engineers. We cater to a niche in the market where there is a demand for designs that stand out for their complexity and uniqueness, which allows us to create absolute exclusivity for our clients. In our view, this represents luxury in the truest sense of the word. Our name embodies our ethos. (Kaizen means ‘continuous improvement’ in Japanese business philosophy.) We apply this by combining traditional craftsmanship with ever forward-thinking design. Our mission to produce the very finest bespoke joinery is demonstrated at every stage, from choosing the best available materials to using the most advanced design technologies, as well as leading manufacturing techniques and methods of installation.

www.kaizenfurniture.com

As fellow furniture designers, Bill and I joined forces to form Kaizen in 1995. We’ve now attracted a team of 40 talented individuals whom we’re truly proud of. I have always admired those who want to break boundaries by following their design instincts - I grew up in the Netherlands, and Gerrit Rietveld, founder of the ‘De Stijl’ movement, along with the likes of Piet Mondrian, inspired and excited me, in part leading me into furniture design. Striving to be the best in one’s field has always motivated me, and it’s a quality that Bill and I and the team all share. As Kaizen grew, we narrowed our focus almost solely on the super prime residential market, creating commissions for private clients and working alongside some of the most revered interior designers and architects in the global industry. For us the pleasure is in the detail, and our typical client will also share our forensic eye. We consider every element in the design and manufacturing process, ensuring that each aspect comes together seamlessly to achieve a flawless finish - not just the timber elements, but also the fine metalwork, glass and stone, and anything else that could be part of the design. We’ve seen many design trends come and go, but find that our clients often prefer to think outside the box, particularly where bespoke finishes are concerned. This means we are constantly experimenting and need to be flexible, so we do not have a signature style. We can turn our hand to almost anything - we’ve completed projects that are contemporary, pared down and minimalist, and others that are extremely decorative with detailed marquetry and carvings. One of the most fantastic projects we completed involved two wardrobes in rosewood, where a French artist hand painted horses on to the door panels in the style of George Stubbs. It was beautifully ornate, a real masterpiece in fine furniture making. There are certainly some finishes and design details we are seeing a strong preference for at the moment, such as straw marquetry, hand-dyed veneers, and the return of brass and bronze integrated fittings. There is a continuous demand for unusual materials; recently we’ve worked with abalone shell, amethyst, rose quartz, pyrite and onyx, as well as an evolving range of marvellous in-house applied liquid metals. Looking ahead, we expect a return of natural materials and honest finishes which reiterate the inherent qualities of the timber. With new technologies on the horizon and the bright young designers we are seeing come through the door, the future of furniture design is exciting. Though it is just as wonderful, and of course essential, that traditional craftsmanship techniques remain very much alive.

108 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN AUTUMN 2019

T

he worldrenowned design house, Andrew Martin, is honouring its 23rd year of documenting global interior design with the publication of the Andrew Martin Interior Design Review Vol. 23. This celebrated book reviews today’s innovation in design across seven continents. The annual review has become a cultural bookmark, illustrating social and political movements as well as aesthetic trends over the last two decades. It proudly marks 100 of the world’s greatest designers, showcasing their projects on an international stage. This year’s designers include Matthew Williamson, Hallie Bowden, Ben Wu and 110 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN AUTUMN 2019

Jimmie Martin, to name a few. A panel of celebrity judges are tasked with selecting one winner of exceptional creativity from the 100 shortlisted in the book. On the celebrity judging panel this year is Professor Gerry McGovern, chief design officer for Land Rover, and Olympic Gold Medallist, Lord Sebastian Coe. Andrew Martin is a luxury British interiors brand founded in 1978 by Martin Waller, who went on to launch the Awards Programme in 1996 to champion the best interior designers across the globe. The Award has been coined the Oscar of the design world. “Every designer has a different and sometimes circuitous route,” says Martin Waller, “for example Nicky Haslam was a famous Wild West cowboy, Martyn Lawrence Bullard and Kelly Wearstler

both set out for L.A. to pursue modelling and acting, and Kit Kemp went from working with architects to design the first and much-acclaimed Firmdale Hotel.” This year’s Designer of the Year is uber-stylish with sophisticated, quintessential city interiors a million miles from the rural upbringing in northern Florida.

“Old Hollywood glamour has been etched in my mind for as long as I can remember,” says Jeff. The new Hollywood glamour, according to Jeff, has been transformed into what he calls “new glamour”, hence the title of this inspired new book. Still as lovely and decadent as before, but on a modern and liveable level, new glamour reflects the way we live now. An instant classic, this book guides us through the bold spaces Jeff has created, while reminding us that interiors 116 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN AUTUMN 2019

must be balanced – whether it’s making sure that even the most sophisticated house has a sense of welcome – and yet being open to the element of rusticity, which Jeff shows in some of his grass cloth-covered walls and captivating light fixtures. “Design has always been a strong force in my life,” says Jeff, who shares this delightful read as he masters the new glamour, allowing us a peek inside his gorgeous rooms.

INSPIRED BY THE COLOURS OF THE SEA Elegant yet comfortable beach house brings the outdoor feeling in PHOTOGRAPHS BRETT BEYER WORDS SHELBA CORNELISON BUILDER / DEVELOPER JAY BIALSKY

W

Jennifer Cohler Mason

hen it came to this Bridgehampton home, interior designer Jennifer Cohler Mason wanted the home to have the feeling of the surrounding bay area. She brought the outside in by using the colours of the sea, sky and sand. Large oversized glass doors throughout further enhanced the outdoor feeling. The client, a couple with three young children, wanted an elegant yet comfortable beach home both for their own enjoyment and for entertaining their families and friends. The sweeping grand entry staircase immediately catches the eye with its monumental customdesigned Mark Figuero hand-blown glass light fixture, appropriately accented with water droplets. Two separate seating areas were joined together to form the great room, which is elegant, yet ideal for entertaining. While this space is quite vast, with its double height ceilings, it gives a wonderful ease of informality. The furniture and rugs are JCM custom-designed in collaboration with Holland and Sherry. Lacquering the dining room walls and ceiling in turquoise continues the outside-inside theme and nicely reflects the bay. A special custom round dining table with a polished steel base was specified, ideal for dinner parties and conversations.

124 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN AUTUMN 2019

The family room and kitchen, one large open space, is the heart of the home with its custom oversized sectional. Here, the family can come together. In the kitchen, a Christopher Peacock centre island was designed in collaboration with JCM, integrating beautifully in the airy space. Counter tops are white Italian milk glass and cabinets are accented with custom hardware wrapped in a blue textured leather. Books and accessories are used extensively throughout the home, creating a more personal feeling, while specially chosen wallpaper in a blue grass cloth has been used in the backs of JMCdesigned bookcases. The media room walls and ceilings are fully upholstered in a stunning navy blue linen. Matching Roman shades add to the cosy atmosphere and give a warm cocoon feeling. In the study, the highlight is a JMC-designed desk set in exquisite millwork lacquered in grey with white trim. The house also has its own powder room designed by Jennifer to have a more masculine vibe. Meanwhile, a junior master suite is discretely located on the first floor. All of the bedrooms are located on the second floor for privacy, each with its own en suite bathroom. The master suite was specifically designed to have a ‘zen’ feel. Decorated in creams and pale powder blues, Jennifer created a floating wall behind the bed and clad it in cream-coloured suede, the purpose to give separation between the master bedroom and the sitting room. Its large glass-windowed master bath overlooks the grounds and bay. Complete privacy is afforded with the simple touch of a button, and the glass turns from clear to white. The mosaic floor, floating vanities and shower are all custom designed by JCM. Outdoor living is one of the most talkedabout topics this decade, including bringing the outdoors in, and Jennifer has taken this delightful bay-area home to an all-new level with its sea, sky and sand motif. previous page Vast double-height ceilings in the great room, with furniture JCM custom-designed in collaboration with Holland and Sherry.

The dining room’s turquoise lacquered walls and ceiling reflect the bay.

New York apartment is result of a shared love of Italian design PHOTOGRAPHS EMILIO COLLAVINO WORDS SHELBA CORNELISON

esigned around his client’s highly selective collection of mid-20th century Italian furniture, this upper East Side New York apartment is set to the backdrop of a pre-war landmark building. Internationally-renowned architect and interior designer Luca Andrisani completely gutted the structure and redid it in its entirety over a period of two years, the overall design goal to pay homage to the many fine Italian artists and furniture makers spanning the 1960s and ’70s. With his gracious accumulation of furnishings, the client knew he wanted a home design with a strong narrative of his Italian roots. When he asked Luca to take on this project, little did he know how much they would have in common. The pair formed an immediate rapport and enjoyed many hours of talking about their love of Italy, Italian movies, and their great mutual passion for modern design.

Regarding the movies, one in particular stood out. Shot at the Village Necchi Campiglio, I Am Love is a modernist masterpiece set in the centre of Milan. The Villa represented a new idea in luxury, typical of the period. It also shunned classical majesty in favour of technological innovation and fine materials, hence setting the stage for this most recent and extraordinary Luca project. Each room is designed to tell a specific story: from the cane panels in the entry foyer that come complete with their own secret doors, to the Kennedy Room, which is a perfect setting for the client’s extensive JFK memorabilia. 134 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN AUTUMN 2019

Complete with its vast, high-ceilinged rooms, walnut panels, phenomenal parquetry and beautiful steel-embossed doors, this apartment is now elaborately filled with precious decorative arts and furnishings. It shows with perfection Luca’s obsession and his client, recalling the flavour of the period with a genteel mix of its treasures, and most of all the wonderful details that the Milanese bourgeoisie have... that old money always comes with great charm. www.lucaandrisaniarchitect.com

Brian J. McCarthy

hen interior designer, Brian J. McCarthy first laid eyes on this apartment in the historic Apthorp building on Manhattan’s upper west side, his first impression was the resplendent light and how it filled the spaces. Light is particularly precious in New York City apartments and an important element in the visual interplay McCarthy creates in his work. The owners, a sophisticated couple whose primary residence is in the Middle East, have a fantastic art collection and fabulous style, which made for a fun and lively collaboration as they worked with McCarthy to bring new life and vibrancy to the apartment. Over the years, the apartment had lost much of its original charm and McCarthy was determined to restore the details, including intricate plaster work throughout and the original mosaic floor in the gallery space, that he transformed into a dining area. Once the year-long restoration was complete the decorating began, and McCarthy married a highlycurated blend of modern pieces with a classic aesthetic for a fresh juxtaposition that suited both homeowners’ tastes. McCarthy was happy to do just that. A multidimensional but crisp white paint is accented by a neutral but far-from-boring custom Beauvais carpet in the living room, creating the perfect backdrop for the couple’s collection of contemporary art. McCarthy’s elegant mix of furnishings from different periods are

artfully composed. The 1950s sconces now hang over a sleek new Chesney’s mantel, while cowhide slipper chairs and an antique glass coffee table appear custom-made for the space. One of McCarthy’s signature techniques – constructing a ‘skyline’ of different furniture heights so that the eye can find interest and move around the room – is something he learned from his mentor, Albert Hadley, and is well employed here. The showstopper of the space, however, is the sculptural, bronze Herve Van der Straeten chandelier that creates a distinctive contrast to the delicate plaster work that adorns the ceiling and walls. In the library, deep aubergine Venetian plastic walls are a surprising twist and a custom carpet, inspired by a 1950s Swedish rug, brings a pop of colour to the space. The master bedroom is elevated by embellishing the original panelling with a faux bois finish. The Noguchi lantern echoes the balance of clean lines and traditional details. The kitchen is transformed by McCarthy’s ability to get beyond trends for a truly original but timeless aesthetic. Cerusedoak cabinetry is a delightful antidote to typical all-white finishes seen in most modern kitchens. Hammered nickel subway tile on the backsplash reflects light and keeps the overall sensibility from feeling too traditional: again, a happy marriage of classic and contemporary. In this apartment, McCarthy’s talent for blending bespoke details, luxurious finishes, carefully conjured colour, and a sense of tailored whimsey, is truly in full effect.

About Brian J. McCarthy A former partner in legendary design firm Parish-Hadley, Brian J. McCarthy founded his eponymous firm in 1992. A graduate of New York City’s Pratt Institute, Brian is a proud member of Architectural Digest’s AD 100, Elle Decor’s A-List and New York Magazine’s 100 Best. WHERE OLD MEETS NEW Stuart Silk reworks a turn of the century palazzo-style residence PHOTOGRAPHS ANDREW GIAMMARCO WORDS SHELBA CORNELISON

rawn to this historic Italianate residence, a landmark in Capitol Hill’s Harvard-Belmont Historical District, the new owners knew they needed a design firm that would respect the home’s historic exterior yet bring a modern sensibility to the interiors, which had long ago been compromised through a series of ill-conceived remodels. Architecture was led by Stuart Silk Architects with interior design by Garrett Cord Warner. The palazzo-style residence – built in 1910 (one year after the famed Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition and designed by Washington, D.C. architects Hornblower and Marshall) – had been commissioned by noted entrepreneur, lawyer, and railroad executive, Samuel R. Hill. The five-story, 11,000ft2 home is built entirely of cast-in-place concrete. Unique in construction, the house is thought to be the oldest of its kind on the West Coast. Channelling the innovative spirit of the home’s original construction and owner, a strategy was devised to bring the home into the 21st century. The multi-phased approach involved preserving as much of the exterior of the house as possible while re-envisioning the floor plans of each of the five floors for contemporary living. Construction was led by Charter Construction and Quantum Consulting Engineers led the structural work. The landscaping was led by Richard Hartlage. Occupying a one-acre site, the property provides expansive views across Lake Union to the Olympic

Mountains. Despite numerous remodels since its original construction, the interiors were a rabbit warren of spaces that defied logic, were poorly connected to the gardens and views, and unsuited to contemporary living. “This was a large undertaking, consisting of five different phases over a period of eight years. Our clients appreciated our sensitivity to historic architecture, our love for modern design, and our willingness to weave them into a seamless expression,” notes architect, Stuart Silk. In response to the chaotic layout, main floor rooms were opened to create an interconnected plan that flows seamlessly from one space to another. Two large windows were inserted into the north side of the home to introduce views and light deep into the house. Each of the other floors were reorganised to better respond to the family’s specific needs and to take advantage of the sweeping vistas of Lake Union, the city, and the Olympic Mountains. 150 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN AUTUMN 2019

Important historic elements were retained and showcased, including the original fir beams in the basement and, notably, the four diamond-patterned structural iron columns, which feature rivets and webbing. The historic panelling and coffering is made of quarter sawn white oak. Custom chandeliers in the entry, dining room, and kitchen were designed by Stephen Hirt and Chico Raskey. An 18-foot-long island of Italian marble with burnished nickel legs is the focal point of the kitchen. Floor-to-ceiling sheets of blackened steel panels line the hallways, concealing doors to the powder room and laundry room. The door from the Diebold home safe was meticulously restored and re-purposed to become the door to the wine room, while the family room features a custom-designed, hand-carved basalt coffee table. The carriage house, originally below the house itself, was transformed to create an exercise space. Original board-formed concrete walls were left exposed and cleaned

up while fir beams were repurposed for the cantilevered staircase, which was ‘carpeted’ with blackened steel. The highlight of the exercise area is the glass-enclosed spa, lined with Brazilian granite in emerald and blue hues that sparkle like a piece of jewellery. The rooftop terrace provides 180-degree views of city, mountains and nearby St. Marks’s Cathedral (an iconic Seattle landmark). The terrace includes two fire pits and a glass covered trellis for use in less-than-perfect conditions. www.stuartsilk.com

hen esteemed architect Charles Eames stated “the details are not the design... they make the design”, he might have been referring to the midcentury industrial aesthetic for which he was renowned. However, his comment resonates today and is applicable to the newly constructed home of Jason Dalbec and Kent James. From the architecture to the finishes and furnishings, no detail was too small for these Atlanta homeowners, so they turned to acclaimed designer Janie Hirsch to guide them through the process. Hirsch has been creating signature residences for more than two decades, and her classic aesthetics have garnered numerous awards. “Jason and Kent wanted to build their dream home, but early on they recognised the scale of this project and brought me in during the architectural planning phase so that I could be involved from the beginning, then they let me do my job,” says Hirsch. The result is a custom-designed 8,700 square foot home that is rooted in European elegance, yet one that exudes comfort throughout. “This was a team effort and I worked with the clients in tandem with builder Matt Joel,

of Joel Construction so that every detail was considered,” said Hirsch. The attention to individual features is established at the entrance where the foyer design is turned on a diagonal and the dark-stained French oak is inlaid with grey marble. The stunning grand curved staircase features a custom newel post and balusters, while the applied moulding on the underside is deftly cut to retain the proper scale and proportion. “The details are extensive, but they’re specific to each room and related throughout in terms of colour, scale and finish,” notes Hirsch. Custom draperies, furniture, lighting, and art were appropriately chosen for each room, and 160 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN AUTUMN 2019

carried through in both the public and private spaces. The soaring 22-foot ceilings in the living room could have overpowered the space; however, Hirsch worked with Francois & Company to create a mantel appropriate to both the aesthetics and proportions of the room. The coffered ceiling and custom chandelier enhanced the architectural design, while Hirsch’s selection of fabrics, furniture and art created an inviting room for entertaining. Both Dalbec and James work from home so their offices were of significant consideration. In Dalbec’s main floor office, Hirsch applied panelled alder wood to create a distinguished space that features a second fireplace. The cowhide rug and handsome desk are both

custom designs by Hirsch, allowing the room to remain carefully edited. The couple enjoy entertaining, and the extensive chef’s kitchen features grand custom cabinetry and lighting, professional appliances, and two massive islands – one for food preparation and one for dining. The master bathroom is a study in both luxury and restraint where the same marble is used throughout for design continuity. Ingenious touches include a rug with banding, brick walls and cap mouldings. “I design for each specific client because it’s their house, not mine, so the end result must reflect them,” says Hirsch. To that point, Hirsch created a highly detailed, 162 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN AUTUMN 2019

but carefully curated, home that reflects the discerning taste of two very sophisticated and astute owners.

ynamic design duo, Geoffrey Bradfield and Roric Tobin, of Bradfield & Tobin Global, redesigned a five-bedroom Hamptons residence in the Sag Harbor enclave of North Haven. The homeowner was particularly fond of the house’s classical architecture, which called for a sophisticated approach to the interior design. The homeowner was also clear that he wanted the home to still feel comfortable so that he and his guests could feel welcome and at ease. Brightening the spatial mood, Bradfield & Tobin opted for cheerful summer colour palettes and swapped nautical themes for stunning wildlife photographs and animal kingdom prints. Responding to the client’s dismay at the shared living spaces in the house, the designers masterfully revamped the living room into a game room. Echoing Bradfield’s early designs in South Africa, the designers transformed the interiors with McGuire furnishings, and added a custom-made Emperador marble top table and a Carlos de la Puente lantern in the entryway and foyer. Bradfield & Tobin procured a custom black-and-white tapestry of a water buffalo, which was originally designed by Bradfield for the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center in South Africa, which accompanied an early 20th Century elephant bronze by Roger Godchaux from Galerie DuMonteil in the main hall.

Terry Hunziker

his unusual project by interior designer Terry Hunziker actually features his own 3,000-square-foot apartment, situated in a circa-1898 brick building in downtown Seattle. Originally built as a hotel, the structure has gone through many transitions over the years. In the 1970s, the ground floor was purchased and developed into a popular discotheque called Shelly’s Leg. Later, following a fire that destroyed the building, leaving the exterior facade intact, it was eventually redeveloped as apartments and finally, during its final renovation, converted to condominiums. At that time, a fourth floor was added to allow for a rooftop garden. When Hunziker first had a good look at the possibilities of the space, he bought two side-by-side units, did a complete gut of them and merged them into a large single apartment. A top floor was eventually incorporated into the mix and became the master bedroom which now opens to the private rooftop terrace, which is a quiet urban refuge. The interior is largely an open plan, but with a variety of free-floating planes and material changes to suggest different functional areas rather than being defined by walls, the look was incredible. Floors and ceilings are held away from each other by a small gap, further reinforcing the notion of

176 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN AUTUMN 2019

floating planes. Contrasting colours, values and textures – all fairly earthy in tones ranging from black to celadon beige to off-white – define the surfaces and the furnishings. A subtle actory-old schoolhouse aesthetic took place, made warm and comfortable through the use of rich materials Existing windows were manipulated to appear tall and narrow. New steel and glass French doors were added in front of original windows. Cast concrete pavers were used for the entry hall floors and blackened steel ‘runners’ were strategically imbedded into the floor to visually divide the long dining gallery from the spacious living room. Wood floors were used for much of the first floor, while soft sisal was chosen for the private second floor spaces. “The design reflects my personality,” notes Hunziker. “I am a collector of sorts... art, furniture, objects and books. I like order and serenity, and even though there are many things in my space, it doesn’t feel cluttered or unfocused.” Collaborations with some of the many talented artisans in Seattle, particularly with the late David Gulassa, played an important role in the design. Gulassa fabricated most of the metal work in the apartment, including intriguing yet subtle door details. Hunziker’s apartment is an environment devoted to working with ideas that he can later bring to other projects around the globe. The space known as ‘Terry’s space’ integrates the use of customdesigned and fabricated items including some of his own designs such as custom-designed cabinets, a grand dining table and an eye‑catching sofa with Glant fabric. The exterior terrace includes Great Lakes, Peninsula, and Camano collections of teak and metal outdoor furniture, all designed by Hunziker for Sutherland. This unusual apartment celebrates the beauty of common and not so common materials used in unconventional ways, and the exploration of contrasting elements such as light with dark, smooth with rough, and gloss with matte. The end result being a spacious, sophisticated urban retreat that strikes a balance between the past and present.

lthough the family in this story was happily ensconced in their Manhattan apartment, it became apparent that more room was needed for the young couple and their three boys. After much searching, they found what they considered the ideal location for their new home, on the shores of Lloyd Harbor on Long Island Sound. After choosing their architect, contractor and interior designer, the family set out to help design their dream home. This beautiful site offered glorious views of Danbury, Connecticut, across the water to the north, and allowed for sun-drenched windows facing south. Enter James Smiros, accomplished and award-winning architect who, with his team of professionals, created a long bar along the shore which would maximise water views from each room, while letting the southern light in. The plan was to present a traditional face to the street, where the shingle-style home would greet family and visitors with glimpses of water. The front door frames a jaw-dropping view through a bank of floorto-ceiling windows spanning the rear. Inside, European white oak floors lead to a shaker staircase and a long, sun-swept hallway. corridor offers lavish views of the Sound across a vast lawn rolling down to the beach. Salt air flows freely through open balcony doors and windows. Ultimately, the ‘great room’ became one of the favoured areas, stringing together a den, kitchen, breakfast area, dining room and spacious, airy living room. Imbued with their own personal style, they helped create the ideal space for their modern family lifestyle and for entertaining visiting guests from the city. Interior designer Ronal Fenstermacher, a professional member of ASID for 40 years, had this to say: “Working with Smiros Architects from the initial drawing stages allowed me to create an interior of finishes from floors to walls and all furnishings within. 186 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN AUTUMN 2019

The colour white was used extensively in keeping with its location on the Sound, and both Jim and I, as well as the clients, wanted the water to be the main focus. Pops of orange inside and outside along the terraces give the extension of indoor/outdoor harmony.” While favoured artwork was provided by the clients, other furnishings were chosen with great care including an eye-catching sofa by Michael Taylor, complementary custom-made chairs, and a stylish round table by Oly. From the time of The Great Gatsby, the Sound has represented the freedom and whimsy of summer, and this wonderful home – with its lavish design, construction and interiors – provides a comfortable year-round retreat for this family’s unfolding story.

ffering stunning views across the city and a floor area of 9,700ft2 over five storeys, this category A listed Victorian townhouse in the heart of Glasgow’s Park District had a lot of potential to create a beautiful family home. The property had lain derelict for over five years, having latterly been used for offices. Bernard Interiors worked alongside the developer for three years to win planning permission to convert the building back to residential use. It now brings together the client’s love of fashion and exotic travel, the restoration of grand period features and the everyday needs of a busy family. It also represents the significant investment in superb quality and craftmanship. “The brief was to create an inviting family home with an abundance of luxe styling and a contemporary edge, whilst celebrating the building’s grand proportions, elegant detailing and period features,” explains Jen Bernard, founder and managing director of Bernard Interiors. “The layout of the building has been carefully reconfigured from the original 21 rooms, taking into account the internal walls which needed to be retained for the listing and those that could be removed, to create several suites.” The team began the design process by planning and implementing the restoration of period features using specialist craftsmen, including bespoke cornicing, ceiling roses, original fireplaces and a 4.5m high grand entrance hall. Each room has a distinct design with unique artwork 192 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN AUTUMN 2019

offset by luxurious fabrics, specially commissioned rugs and a variety of objets d’art. Colour was a significant part of the brief and Bernard Interiors ensured every room is vibrant and sophisticated with its own identity and colour palette. Bespoke joinery has been fitted throughout including new walnut doors, and a lift which was originally installed in the 1920s has been fully refurbished. Oversized features include antiqued mirror panels from floor to ceiling in the hall and the show-stopping 12 metre chandelier which spills through the stairwell. “The mirror panels bring light right into the hall but were a challenge to fit due to their size and the fact that in an old building even after renovation the walls are never quite straight,” Jen added. “The contractor worked from our CAD drawings to install the panels in the right order and then time was spent perfecting their alignment. “The chandelier was commissioned from George Singer and is made from thousands of smoked Swarovski crystals, each applied on site by hand from scaffolding erected on every floor. The chandelier creates maximum impact as you enter the home, greatly enhancing the effect of the beautiful but imposing staircase.” Bespoke floor to ceiling furniture creates a focal point in each of the four reception rooms and provides functional storage for busy family living. Bernard Interiors worked with marble suppliers in Venice to source materials for the kitchen island and surfaces, master bathroom and central island in the gentleman’s cigar room, enriching the luxurious feel of the rooms.
