In Troy’s first appearance in the state of Utah since 2003 (Nov. 15, Utah State), the Trojans managed just seven points and 181 yards of total offense. The Trojans failed to record at least 200 yards of total offense in a game for the first time since 2014. Gunnar Watson completed 21-of-33 passes for 162 yards, while Eafford hauled in a pair of passes, including a 55-yard reception that set up the lone Trojan touchdown. The reception was his third reception of at least 50-yards in his career.

Tray Eafford still remembers the first touchdown he ever scored. Eafford was in seventh grade, his first year playing football, when he burned the defense by taking a screen pass 45 yards to the house in the first game of the season. “I just kept telling myself, ‘Don’t get caught, man. You’re fast enough to not get caught, it’s time to take it to take it to another level,’” Eafford said. “It’s a memory you don’t forget, kinda like graduating, it’s just so exciting that you don’t forget it.” That feeling hasn’t changed, even nine years later.

“It never gets old,” Eafford said. “In college, we have cameras all over, fans cheering us and it’s just such a real moment. I’ll never take it for granted.” Eafford found out he was fast the same way most kids do – racing his classmates on the playground at recess. “I’ve just always been a fast guy,” Eafford said. “I used to just run track, but everyone knew I was gifted so they told me to play football and I started in seventh grade. After scoring in my first game, I knew that I was talented, so I stuck with it and the game just kept getting more fun to me.” The speedster was a star on the track and still holds the Lee County High School record in the 100m with a time of 10.5 seconds. Eafford loved running track, especially because it helped him stay in shape for football. But football offered a path to college, and eventually, a degree. “I loved track, but colleges offer full scholarships for football and I didn’t want my parents to [pay] out-of-pocket,” Eafford said. “So, heading into my last year of high school I started doing extra work for football and it paid off.”

Troy won out as Eafford’s school of choice over other potential suiters such as Southern Miss and Cincinnati. “Troy just felt like the right fit for me,” Eafford said. “The facilities and campus are top-notch and it just felt like somewhere that I could continue to develop.” Eafford showcased his speed while putting together a solid freshman season for the Trojans – he played in nine games, averaged 18.4 yards per catch and scored three touchdowns of 40+ yards – before he suffered a season-ending injury against Arkansas State.

“It was tough because it happened in the last game before the bowl game,” Eafford said. “But thankfully I was able to play most of the season and make it back by winter workouts. I had some great people around me to help keep my head on straight.” Eafford continued to embrace his role as a big-play threat in the Trojan offense during the 2018 and 2019 seasons, scoring three touchdowns in both years with his longest receptions registering 60 and 64 yards, respectively. Entering his final season with the Trojans, Eafford finds himself as a leader, and starter, in a loaded wide receiver room that set the school-record with 11, 100-yard receiving games in 2019. “Oh man, this group could be really special this year,” Eafford said. “We’ve got a lot of young guys that can play and we’ve got some guys coming back from injury. I’d say we’re about three deep at every position. If anyone gets hurt, the next man can step up and fill those shoes.” Off the field, the wide receiver room is as close as you’d expect them to be.

“We love to play video games together, grill out, watch sports, all that kind of stuff,” Eafford said. “We’re really close as a group and I think that helps us on the field to hold each other accountable.” Troy will look to rebound after a disappointing 2019 season that was riddled with injuries and setbacks, and the wide receiver core is poised to lead the way. “Lick the finger, turn the page,” Eafford said. “We can’t let one season determine what kind of team we really have. We’re a different team now and we’ve put last season behind us. Our goal is to win the championship, that’s our goal every year. We have the talent and players to do it, it’s just on us to execute.” There is a different energy, a different feeling around the Troy football team in 2020, a shift that should help the Trojans in year two under head coach Chip Lindsey. “You can tell that guys just want it more,” Eafford said. “Guys doing extra work, doing stuff the right way, practicing right, holding each other accountable. We want to win; we want to compete for a championship.” Troy football is back in The Vet. It’s time to Defend the Wall.

John Hines’ journey to becoming a Trojan left with him a lasting life lesson – stay humble.

The Montgomery, Ala., native was slated to suit up for a DI program before taking the junior college option to get his academics under wrap. “I had signed with Western Kentucky out of high school,” Hines said. “I ended up not having the grades, so I took the junior college route.” Hines took to Southwest Mississippi Community College to grow as both a player and a person. During his freshman campaign, Hines recorded more than 50 tackles, five tackles for loss, three sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He was looking forward to another season with the Bears before suffering an injury causing him to miss all but one game of his sophomore year. “You have to stay humble. All (junior college) players are there for different reasons. I feel like the reason that I was there was to focus more on my grades and my education.” Hines admits that going directly into a fouryear program is not for everyone.

“I feel like if I came here out of high school that I probably wouldn’t have been ready, so junior college was the better route for me, anyway. Junior college woke me up.” Hines came to Troy with three years of eligibility. Coming off an injury, Hines utilized his first year in Troy to get ready and learn what he had to do to make an impact on the field. “I watched the guys in front of me to see what I needed to do to get onto the field. After that, I started to take it more seriously. I followed in the footsteps of the guys that showed me the way. Now, it is time to step up.” The defensive end saw action in all 12 games a year ago and was tabbed a starter for his last year in a Trojan uniform. As an older guy on the field, Hines understands that he can use the adversity he experienced throughout his journey to help the underclassmen. “I feel like the younger guys are looking up to me because I’m the oldest guy in the room. They know my story and the things that I struggled through. I need to be a more of a ‘lead by example’ for those guys. That’s my role, now.”

Now you’ve got just a small glimpse into what took place over a two-month period of time to ensure that the Trojans played a full 12-game slate with six games at The Vet in 2020. “Russell Crowe’s character was writing on walls, he was writing on windows, he ran out of places to write because he had so much information,” Jones said. “That’s how it was happening with us. I had four different white boards that we were able to flip over and cover from top to bottom. It was happening so fast, that in the morning we had games and then by the afternoon the games were gone. “Typically, you’d schedule those four non-conference games six to eight years out,” Jones said. “We did four games in a five-week period which is insane when you think about it.”

Troy’s original 2020 non-conference schedule had been set for quite some time. The home opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and a road trip to Tennessee were announced in early 2019. The Trojans’ much-anticipated home game against NC State was scheduled as a home-and-home back in 2014 with the Wolfpack originally scheduled to play in The Vet in 2017, while a trip to UMass closed the book on a home-and-home series with the Minutemen that was also inked in 2014. Within a matter of weeks, all four of those games were gone. The SWAC pushed its season to the spring. The Big Ten canceled its fall campaign. The ACC adopted a model where schools couldn’t play non-conference games on the road and UMass canceled its season.

That left Troy with just eight Sun Belt games on the books and four gaping holes to fill. “At last count, we went through 197 different schedule combinations,” Jones said. The final combination was an attractive one for both fans and the football program alike. A rare in-season home-and-home with former Sun Belt rival Middle Tennessee, a trip to perennial power BYU and the addition of Eastern Kentucky to fill out the six-game home slate.

“BYU was a great opportunity to get a game guarantee plus a game on ESPN; plus, they will play at The Vet in 2026,” Jones said. “We were able to hook back up with an old rival of ours that we haven’t played in a long time in Middle Tennessee. The game fit in our footprint with it being only a five-hour drive, so it was financially viable from a department standpoint and a game that fans from both teams could travel to.” On Aug. 20, Jones and Troy Athletics released its new schedule to glowing reviews from fans, media and most-importantly the student-athletes themselves. But just like everything else in 2020, nothing is set in stone and the schedule that Jones and his staff worked so hard to put together has already been turned on its head. Troy’s new season opener against ULM was pushed to Dec. 5 and the “Battle for the Belt” at South Alabama was moved to Dec. 12 due to COVID-19 issues at both schools. Troy’s new home opener (today’s game) was originally scheduled for a Thursday night before shifting to Saturday morning and then eventually to its final 2:30 p.m. spot. The safest thing to say about football scheduling in 2020 … don’t write anything in Sharpie!

“What we’ve attempted to do at Troy University is to create an environment, a culture of caring, where our students can actually experience, get to know and live, work and learn with students from around the world,” Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, said. “That’s essential as they prepare to make a living and a life in today’s global marketplace.” Troy University is also home to the Confucius Institute, a center aimed at promoting Chinese language and culture and fostering business exchange opportunities. In addition, the University is home to the Center for International Business and Economic Development and the Manuel H. Johnson Center for Political Economy. TROY also led the way in the United States with its dual degree 1-2-1 program, a partnership with certain Chinese universities that allows Chinese students to start their degree program at home, transfer to TROY for two years and return to their home institutions to finish their degree. Students receive diplomas from both TROY and their home institutions at the completion of the program. TROY offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs across five colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business, Communication and Fine Arts, Health and Human Services and Education. In addition, Troy University offers a Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree, which prepares its graduates for the most advanced level of nursing care, and the Ph.D. in Sport Management. Troy University offers a vast exposure to the historical and cultural arts. On the Montgomery Campus, students, faculty and the general public can visit the Rosa Parks Museum, which celebrates the legacy of the late Civil Rights leader whose refusal to give up her seat on a city bus to a white male led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The Davis Theater for Performing Arts, also on the Montgomery Campus, provides a venue for a variety of local and regional musical and cultural entertainment.

On the Troy Campus, the Janice Hawkins Cultural Arts Park, named for the University’s First Lady, is home to an amphitheater, walking trails and a collection of outdoor sculpture, including 200 terracotta warriors by renowned sculptor Huo Bao Zhu. The park is also home to the International Arts Center, which includes the Huo Bao Zhu Gallery, the Fred Nall Museum, and Warriors Unearthed designed by Frank Marquette, an interpretive center explaining the significance and design of the terracotta warrior exhibit. The center is also home to studio and classroom space for the University’s Graphic Design program. TROY’s College of Communication and Fine Arts provides more than 200 public performances and artistic presentations each year, to an audience of more than 250,000 people. More than 20 percent of the students on the Troy Campus are involved in music study through the Sound of the South Marching Band, choral ensembles and private lessons. This year, the Concert Chorale ensemble performed at the historic Carnegie Hall and a group of music, theatre and dance students performed at the Danza in Arte a Pietrasanta Festival in Italy. Students on the Troy Campus looking to get involved in University life can choose from nearly 200 different campus service, religious and social organizations. Cocurricular organizations include the “South of the South” marching and concert bands, Collegiate Singers and Trojan Dance Repertory Ensemble. In addition, TROY offers a variety of activities to enhance the quality of student life on campus. Troy University has an active Greek Life, with 13 fraternities, 10 sororities and five music fraternities on its Troy Campus. A fraternity village consisting of seven two-story houses was opened in 2010. The Troy Campus has two active studentled publications, The Tropolitan and the Palladium. Also, the award-winning TROY TrojanVision broadcasts three live student produced newscasts daily.

32nd year University of Montevallo, ‘67 Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., a native of Mobile, Alabama, was named Chancellor of Troy University Sept. 1, 1989. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Montevallo and his doctorate from the University of Alabama. Upon completion of his bachelor’s degree in 1967, Hawkins was commissioned a lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a platoon leader during the Vietnam War. For his combat duty, he received the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and a citation from the Korean Marine Corps. Hawkins has overseen an era of change and growth at TROY, as he led the merger of the worldwide Troy State University System into the unified Troy University, an initiative called “One Great University.” More than $350 million has been invested in capital improvements by the Hawkins Administration, including new academic buildings on all four of TROY’s Alabama campuses. Chancellor Hawkins served as the catalyst for the University’s evolution to an international institution, as TROY has attracted record numbers of students from other nations and established teaching sites around the world. During his tenure, academic standards for admission have been increased, new degree programs were established in all academic colleges, and intercollegiate athletics joined the highest level of NCAA competition. Hawkins’ professional background includes his service as an assistant dean at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (1971-1979) and as

president of the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind in Talladega (1979-1989). In 1985, he was honored by the University of Montevallo as Distinguished Alumnus of the Year, and was the recipient of the 2003 AllAmerican Football Foundation’s “Top College President” Award. In 2005 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Murphy High School in Mobile, Alabama. In 2007 he was recognized as the “Alabama Citizen of the Year” by the Alabama Broadcasters Association. In 2011, Dr. Hawkins was recognized with the Chief Executive Leadership Award presented by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and as the March of Dimes River Region Citizen of the Year. In 2012 he received the Distinguished Public Service Award from the Secretary of the Air Force for his service on the Air University Board of Visitors from 2004-2012. In 2014 he was one of nine university presidents/chancellors worldwide— and the only one in North America—to receive the World Confucius Institute’s Individual Performance Excellence Award. In October 2016 Dr. Hawkins was inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor. Three buildings are named in his honor: the “Jack and Janice Hawkins Chapel” at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, the “HawkinsAdams-Long Hall of Honor” and “Jack Hawkins, Jr. Hall” which serves the College of Education of Troy University. Hawkins was profiled as part of two books published in 2004: “Above and Beyond: Former Marines Conquer the Civilian

World” by Rudy Socha and Carolyn Darrow and “The Entrepreneurial College President” by James L. Fisher and James V. Koch. Hawkins serves on the board of directors of the Daniel Foundation, the Bennie Adkins Foundation, Business Council of Alabama, the American Village Trust, College Football Playoff Board of Managers, and Troy Bank and Trust Company. He has served as chairman of the Governor’s Committee on Employment of the Disabled, Board of Visitors of Marine Corps University, Better Business Bureau of Central Alabama, and past President of the Sun Belt Conference. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), as Chairman of the Council of University Presidents in Alabama, as President of the Southland Football League, as chairman of the Air University Board of Visitors, as a trustee of Talladega College, the Helen Keller Eye Research Foundation, and the American Foundation for the Blind. He is a member of the Troy Rotary Club. Dr. Hawkins is married to Janice Hawkins and they have two daughters, Katie, a former officer in the USAF who is married to Air Force Col. In just one year as Troy’s Director of Athletics, Brent Jones has overseen a complete restructuring of the department’s external and internal teams and led a department that set records in academics, licensing, attendance and season tickets sales. Jones leads the department under his W-4 mantra – Winning in the Classroom, Winning on the Field, Winning in the Community and Winning in the Stands. On the court, Troy posted one of its top Bubas Cup (Sun Belt All-Sports Trophy) finishes in recent years despite many high scoring spring sports not earning points due to the COVID-19 stoppage of play. Women’s basketball won its third Sun Belt title in the last five seasons, volleyball posted one the best turnarounds in the nation, women’s indoor track & field posted its best-ever finish and soccer took home a second place finish in the Sun Belt. The women’s golf team was well on its way to a top Sun Belt finish following three in-season victories, softball had a top 30 RPI and baseball was one of the top offensive teams in the country when their seasons were halted. Off the field of play, Jones led Troy Athletics to extraordinary levels. Eleven of Troy’s 15 programs finished with grade point averages

Troy Athletics secured partnerships with leading branding specialist Jeremy Darlow to provide brand marketing classes for all student-athletes, while best-selling author Damon West partnered with Troy Athletics to provide professional and personal development for the athletics department staff. Jones led a renegotiation on Troy’s multimedia rights deal with Outfront Sports which will lead to increased revenue for Troy Athletics for years to come. Additionally, Troy secured a new partnership with Affinity Licensing which significantly amplified Troy merchandise volume in the marketplace in addition to driving up revenue and better serving Troy’s fans and merchants. Thanks in part to a new partnership with IMG-L Ticket Solutions, the Trojans set numerous benchmarks during his three-plus years at Troy, including record breaking attendance numbers for Troy football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, volleyball, softball and baseball. Men’s basketball season ticket sales increased by 400 percent during his first season in the AD chair, while a record number of season tickets were sold for football, baseball and women’s basketball. Five of the top seven single-game Troy football crowds have occurred in the last three seasons, and Troy led the Sun Belt Conference in total attendance for the first time in school history in 2018 and ranked second in 2019. Troy’s nine percent increase in attendance from 2016 to 2017 was the 21st largest in the country and Troy has generated more than 1,750 additional season ticket sales over that span. Jones has secured home-and-home football games with Mississippi State, Memphis, Southern Miss, UAB, Army, UMass, BYU and Western Kentucky while also scheduling guarantee games against Clemson, Tennessee, South Carolina, Iowa, Missouri and Kansas State. Troy’s facilities have also been upgraded under Jones’ watch with new turf in The Vet, a new court design in Trojan Arena and rebranding of the Troy volleyball and track & field offices. The restructuring of the overall athletics department led to increased production across the board including an establishing of best practices by the internal operations department to best maximize staff and transitioning development to the external operations team, which led to a significant increase in giving and major gifts.

Jones, who was introduced as Troy’s Director of Athletics June 12, 2019, took over the role following a two-year stint as Troy’s Deputy Director of Athletics for External Operations. In his role as Deputy Director of Athletics, Jones had oversight of marketing, communications, advertising, ticket sales, Troy Sports Properties, broadcasting, promotions, fan engagement, fan experience, branding, licensing and trademarks. He served as the sport administrator for the baseball program and was in charge of football scheduling. Jones spearheaded a partnership with Troy University’s Hospitality, Tourism and Sports Management program to offer a revenue generation class that assists in outbound sales efforts, ticket sales, marketing, hospitality, customer service and retention efforts. Also, several unique campaigns and events have been established including an online athletic merchandise store, the football Tailgate Terrace Concert Series, OneTROY Fridays, the Community Hero ticket plan, bowl socials around the state, a marketing, sales, and best practices partnership with the Montgomery Biscuits, performing a Trojan Takeover in New Orleans and Mobile during Troy’s two most recent bowl appearances and hosting a Troy University graduation in New Orleans for graduating football players, cheerleaders and band members during the R&L New Orleans Bowl. Jones has also developed partnerships with Tailgate Guys, Affinity Licensing and IMGLearfield Ticket Solutions with the overall goal of better serving the Troy fanbase and generating additional revenue. He joined the Troy staff from Southern Miss where he most recently served as the Senior Associate AD for External Affairs. During his tenure at Southern Miss, the Golden Eagles set numerous attendance records in baseball, men’s basketball, softball, volleyball and soccer including having the highest attended football and women’s basketball game in each program’s history. Additionally, under Jones’ guidance, Southern Miss led Conference USA in football attendance in 2015 and 2016 including a 25 percent increase in overall attendance. The 25 percent increase in attendance ranked top 10 nationally in improved attendance for 2015. Jones is a 2013 graduate of the prestigious D1A Institute and a member of NACDA, ICLA, and NACMA. He is a frequent speaker and presenter for the NACMA and ICLA conventions as well as being an attendee for the inaugural Surefire Baseball Forum. Jones was a standout college baseball player at Oglethorpe University. He is married to the former Tracey Styers and they have two children, son Jaxson and daughter Payton Grace.

Chip Lindsey, one of the nation’s top innovative offensive minds, begins his second season as Troy’s head coach. Lindsey, 45, has been the architect of some of the nation’s most electric offenses since moving to the collegiate ranks and his first season with the Trojans was no exception. The Trojans topped the 500-yard mark in total offense on six different occasions to tie the program’s DI record and scored 35-plus points eight times; the second most in program history and fourth most in Sun Belt Conference history. The Trojans finished ninth nationally in passing offense (313.2), 25th in scoring offense (33.8) and 18th in total offense (456.3). He also guided quarterback Kaleb Barker, just 331 days removed from an ACL injury, to one of the best seasons in Troy history. Barker finished third nationally in completions per game (24.92), fifth in yards per game (302.3), fourth in 300-yard passing games (6) and 14th in touchdown passes (30). Among the Troy all-time greats to play the position, Barker finished third in touchdown passes and passing yards (3,628) and fourth in completions (299). Both Barker and receiver Kaylon Geiger were named to the All-Sun Belt First Team and Geiger was the league’s Newcomer of the Year. On the defensive side of the football, linebacker Carlton Martial became just the 12th player in the last 20 years to finish a season with 100 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and three interceptions on his way to All-America honors while true freshman safety Dell Pettus was named a Freshman All-American. The offseason saw the positive momentum continue as Lindsey and his staff signed one of the top recruiting classes in program history as the Trojans welcomed the second-ranked class in the Sun Belt and the second-highest rated class in school history according to 247Sports. Troy added 17 three-star players in the class including several ranked near the top 100 in their position nationally. Lindsey was named the offensive coordinator at Kansas the month prior to being named Troy’s head coach in Jan. 2019 following two seasons at Auburn and one season at Arizona State as both schools’ offensive coordinator. Lindsey’s first stint at Auburn as an offensive analyst resulted in the Tigers winning the SEC Championship and making a BCS National Championship run, while his most recent tenure on The Plains saw Auburn set school records and post one of the best offensive seasons in SEC history. In 2017, Auburn became just the eighth team in SEC history and the first in Auburn history to rush and pass for 3,000 yards in a season. The Tigers also ranked 26th nationally in total offense and set an Auburn record scoring 327 points in SEC play. Auburn won the SEC West Division after knocking off a pair of top-ranked teams in Georgia and Alabama over a three-week period.

All-SEC quarterback Jarrett Stidham, the second Auburn player ever to throw for 3,000 yards in a season, led the SEC and ranked ninth nationally in completion percentage. Running back Kerryon Johnson was SEC Offensive Player of the Year, and Ryan Davis set an Auburn receiving record with 84 catches. Prior to leaving for Kansas, Lindsey’s final season at Auburn saw the Tigers defeat Pac-12 Champion Washington and nationally-ranked Texas A&M. Lindsey returned to Auburn from Arizona State, where he served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2016. The Sun Devils started 5-1 before losing three quarterbacks to injury; running back Kalen Ballage tied an NCAA record scoring eight touchdowns in a 68-55 win over Texas Tech. As offensive coordinator at Southern Miss from 2014-15, he developed the Conference USA 2015 Offensive Player of the Year and current San Francisco 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens, who ranked second in the league in passing yards (4,145) and TD passes (36), and ranked in the top eight in the nation in both marks in 2015. The Southern Miss offense broke five singleseason school records in 2015: completions (312), passing yards (4,263), total offense yards (6,758), touchdowns (67) and points (528), as the Golden Eagles recorded nine wins, a Conference USA West title, and a berth in the Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl against Washington. Lindsey’s 2015 Golden Eagle offense ranked fifth in the nation in total touchdowns, seventh in total points, eighth in total passing yards and completions, and 12th in points per game and passing yards per game. The 2015 Golden Eagles tallied more than 4,200 passing yards and just under 2,500 rushing yards. The national

leader with 102 explosive plays, Southern Miss was just the second school in FBS history with a 4,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard receiver and two 1,000-yard rushers. Prior to his first stint at Auburn, from 2011-12, Lindsey served as head coach at Spain Park (Ala.) High School, leading the school to its first 6A regional championship. Lindsey served as quarterbacks coach at Troy in 2010, following a long and distinguished career as a prep coach (1997-2009) in football and baseball. At Troy, he coached the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year Corey Robinson and helped guide the Trojans to their fifth consecutive Sun Belt Championship. Robinson set a school record for completions (321) that season while his 3,726 passing yards rank as the second most in Troy history; he threw for 387 yards and four touchdowns in Troy’s New Orleans Bowl victory. The Trojans totaled the second most passing touchdowns (33) and most completions (340) in a season in school history.

Prior to coming to Troy in 2010, Lindsey served as an offensive coordinator at Hoover (Ala.) High School in 2007 after serving as the head coach Colbert Heights (Ala.) High School, where he earned 2006 Coach of the Year honors from the Florence Times-Daily. Lindsey spent the 1997-2004 seasons as an assistant coach, including Florence, Deshler, Sparkman, and Springville High Schools in Alabama. Lindsey played football at the University of North Alabama before transferring as a student to Alabama, where he received his bachelor’s degree in history and English in 1997. He earned a master’s in educational leadership from the University of Phoenix in 2005. A native of Madison, Ala., Lindsey graduated from Bob Jones High School, where he was a three-sport letterman. Lindsey and his wife Cecily have four children: Claire, Caroline, Cooper and Conner.

The Troy University Band Program enjoys nationwide recognition as one of the finest and most comprehensive musical organizations of its kind. Troy instrumentalists not only have the opportunity to participate in the renowned “Sound of the South” Marching Band, but also have the opportunity to perform in the symphony band, four concert bands, three jazz ensembles, jazz combos, the Basketball Pep Band and various small ensembles. The 2015 – 2016 year marked the 50th Anniversary of The “Sound of the South” Marching Band. Dr. John M. Long created the band in it’s current form in the fall of 1965. Dr. Long developed The “Sound of the South” into a collegiate ensemble that has developed a national reputation for its quality musicianship and exciting, innovative arrangements and drill design. The “Sound of the South” Marching Band entertains audiences regularly at all Troy home games and several away games. Recent away appearances include Troy University’s bowl appearances at the Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose, Calif., the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala., and three appearances at the New Orleans Bowl in the Louisiana Superdome. In fact, over the past few years, the “South of the South” Marching Band has traveled tens of thousands of miles entertaining audiences literally from coast to coast. Additionally, the “Sound” has been featured on all major broadcast and sports networks including ESPN, Fox Sports South and USA television networks. Other honors which the “Sound of the South” has received is the representation of the State of Alabama at the Inaugural Parades

of President Richard Nixon (1969 and 1973), President Ronald Reagan (1985), and President George Bush (1989). The “Sound” has also performed halftime shows with Grammy Award-winning artists Brian McKnight, Lee Greenwood, The Temptations and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, Chubby Checker. The “Sound of the South” Pep Band performs at all men’s and women’s basketball home games. Comprised of 30 musicians from all academic disciplines, the pep band entertains the home crowd with great music and irreverent, energetic cheering. This group travels with men’s and women’s basketball to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, as well as the NCAA Tournaments. Membership in the basketball pep band is by audition, and it performs from Mid-October to April each academic year. The “Sound of the South” is the largest student organization on campus and its members have produced leaders in academics, student government, and athletics, as well as other areas of campus life. Students have the opportunity to participate in several professional organizations including Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, Phi Mu Alpha, Sigma Alpha Iota and Phi Boota Roota. Barry McKnight is celebrating his 19th season as the play-by-play “Voice of the Trojans” in 2020. A veteran of the broadcast industry, McKnight serves as the co-host of a sports talk radio show on WMSP-740 AM in Montgomery, where he has served in that capacity for the last 22 years. McKnight was selected as the 2010-11 recipient of the Sun Belt Conference Broadcaster of the Year award. He also works in television broadcasting, where he served as the primary play-by-play announcer for College Sports Southeast’s football, basketball and baseball coverage from 1997 until 2001. A nine-time winner of Associated Press Awards for broadcast excellence, he is a member of the American Sportscasters Association and National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. Jerry Miller is entering his 28th year with the Troy Sports Radio Network and his 15th in the booth as the color analyst for football. For his first 11 years, Miller provided interviews, insight and analysis from a unique perspective on the sideline. A Troy alum and longtime supporter of the athletic program, Miller also serves as the color analyst for home Trojan men’s basketball and baseball games, in addition to his work covering numerous local high school events on both television and radio. Miller in a member of the Troy Baseball Hall of Fame. Junior Louissaint begins his second year as the sideline reporter for the Troy Sports Radio Network. Louissaint was a two-year starter for the Trojans in 2003-04 and famously returned a fumble 63 yards for a touchdown in Troy’s victory over No. 19 Missouri. Louissaint, a native of Miami via Haiti, went on to play professionally with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and then in the AFL with the Lakeland Thunderbolts and Florence Phantoms. Following his football playing days, Louissaint was an assistant coach at Pike County High School for three years and two years as the head varsity girls basketball coach. Doug Amos begins his fifth season as the studio host for the Troy Sports Radio Network. In addition to working in studio for Trojan football broadcasts, Amos also serves as the play-by-play voice for Troy men’s basketball home games on the radio and as the play-by-play voice for Troy women’s basketball on ESPN+. For 20 years, Amos was the radio voice for the Faulkner University athletic department, broadcasting football, basketball and baseball games through the 2015-2016 seasons. In addition, Amos hosts a sports radio show in Montgomery alongside his co-host Charlie Trotman, a former quarterback at Auburn. The show airs on WTXK The Ticket, a TSRN affiliate.

TROJAN TALK The weekly Chip Lindsey call-in show, Trojan Talk, originates from Santa Fe Cattle Company on Highway 231 in Troy weekly from 6-7 p.m. The fast-paced show hosted by Barry McKnight, the Voice of the Trojans, features Troy players, coaches and fans.
