Head coach Eric Newell Second Season

After leading Troy to its third-best season by a first-year head coach, Eric Newell returns for his second season leading the Troy softball program. In 17 seasons as a head coach, Newell’s teams have dominated on the field, posting a combined .727 winning percentage between his eight years at Williams Baptist (254-121) and eight seasons at AUM (302-88). Newell-coached teams have won eight conference titles and appeared in six NCAA or NAIA postseason tournaments with four World Series appearances. Newell led the Trojans to a 33-19-1 record in 2023, including a pair of victories over ranked opponents as Troy defeated No. 25 Texas State and No. 25 Louisiana during Sun Belt Conference play. Four Trojans earned All-Sun Belt Second Team honors: Taylor McKinney, Kelly Horne, Leanna Johnson and Libby Baker, and Troy ranked into the top five within the Sun Belt in multiple statistical categories: runs scored (fourth-265), total bases (fifth-588), walks (second-185), slugging percentage (fifth-.437), triples (third-11), on base percentage (fourth -.366), RBIs (fourth-232) and home runs (fourth-49).

The Newell File Coaching History

Troy, head coach..............................2023-Pr AUM, head coach............................2016-22 Williams Baptist, head coach..........2007-15 Fredericktown (HS), head coach......2002-06

Coaching Accomplishments - Four time Coach of the Year - Coached five NAIA All-Americans, eight NAIA Scholar-Athletes, 37 all-conference selections and 102 academic all-conference performers. - Has won eight conference titles and appeared in six NCAA or NAIA post season tournaments with four World Series Appearances.

Newell propelled Taylor McKinney to one of the top players in the league as she hit at a .349 clip in addition to leading the Trojans with 51 RBIs while her 12 home runs were tied for the most on the team. In the circle, Leanna Johnson finished her legendary career with her best season on record as she pitched to a 24-9 record with a 1.99 ERA. She set the program record with 101 career wins and passed the 1,000-strikeout mark for her career. Prior to Troy, Newell led Auburn-Montgomery to back-to-back No. 3 national rankings in the 202122 seasons as the Warhawks were among the final six teams remaining in the 2022 NCAA Division II Softball World Series after AUM won both its Regional and Super Regional matchups. Newell’s aggressive style of play led AUM to ranking in the top 14 nationally in scoring his final four seasons with the program. Additionally, the Warhawks stole more than 100 bases in each of his final four full seasons, including 179 in 2019, the third-most in the country. AUM’s 2.82 stolen bases per game in 2018 were the fifth-most nationally. AUM’s dominance also translated to the circle, where Warhawk pitchers combined for a 1.97 ERA with 66 complete games and 54 shutouts from 2019 to 2022. This past season, Newell guided the Warhawks to 49 wins, their most ever since moving to the Division II level in 2017 and most since Newell’s 2016 NAIA World Series squad won 53 games. AUM was electric on the field, stealing 105 bases in 62 games, all while belting 54 home runs, 71 doubles, 20 triples and posting an .852 team OPS. Additionally, the Warhawks averaged 6.3 runs per game and finished ninth nationally in runs scored. AUM pitchers tossed 31 complete games and 12 shutouts with the Warhawks’ top two pitchers both finishing with sub 1.70 ERAs on the year. Newell and the Warhawks were rewarded for their outstanding play, with Gia Martin earning All-America distinction, Newell taking home Gulf South Coach of the Year honors, three Warhawks earning all-region awards and five taking home all-conference recognition. AUM’s 2022 season was a perfect bookend for Newell’s career in the Capital City after he began his tenure leading the Warhawks to the 2015 NAIA National Championship. AUM rolled through the Southern States Athletic Conference with a 24-2 record and didn’t allow a run in the AUM Bracket of the NAIA Opening Round. The Warhawks finished the year with a school record 46 wins as they won their four games in the World Series by a combined 31-1 score. He was named the SSAC and NAIA Coach of the Year, while he and assistant coach Scottie Wilkes were named the NAIA Coaching Staff of the Year by the NFCA. Individually, Cassie Jones was named the 2015 NAIA National Player of the Year, NAIA All-American and the SSAC Pitcher of the Year. Newell led AUM in its transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II prior to the 2017 season, and it didn’t take long for the Warhawks to adjust to their elevated level of competition. Newell led AUM to a 43-12 record in 2019, including a 20-9 mark in the Gulf South Conference, and had the Warhawks rolling in the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season. AUM had won seven games in a row and nine of its last 10 when the season was halted.

TROY Newell and the Warhawks responded to the adversity by posting the school’s best season to date at the Division II level in 2021 by finishing with a 40-7 record, a Gulf South Conference regular season championship, a Gulf South Conference Tournament title, an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, three All-Americans and a No. 3 national ranking during the season. In the process, Newell captured his 500th career victory as a head coach, and AUM landed five players on all-conference teams at the end of the season, including four first team selections. The Warhawks opened the season winning their first 14 games, earning the squad their first ever Top 25 national ranking, and they followed that later in the year with a doubleheader sweep at No. 1 North Georgia. In 2020, the Warhawks led the conference in runs (169) and RBIs (146) while leading the league in shutouts (9), hits allowed (80), runs allowed (47) and fewest walks surrendered (37). AUM added 14 wins to their 2019 total from 2018, finishing 43-12 overall and 20-9 in GSC play. The Warhawks won their first 11 games, including a 9-0 victory over No. 3 North Georgia to open the season and added series victories over No. 16 Valdosta State and No. 21 Mississippi College later in the year. Newell’s run-and-gun softball style was on full display as freshman Olivia Aycock set the program record for stolen bases in a single season (47), while five players hit over .300 on the year. The Warhawks posted a 1.91 team ERA in the circle, with four pitchers posting sub 2.00 ERAs on the year. AUM’s 2018 squad finished with a 19-14 record in its first season competing in the Gulf South Conference, thanks to six series victories within league play. During AUM’s first season transitioning from NAIA to NCAA Division II, Newell guided the Warhawks to a 25-18 record in 2017. AUM won its first NCAA Division II game against No. 13 Valdosta State in early February, and the Warhawks later knocked off No. 17 Alabama-Huntsville. In the year after AUM’s national title, Newell led AUM to a school record 53 wins and the program’s first SSAC Tournament title. The Warhawks finished the season ranked third nationally and won a pair of games in the NAIA World Series.

SOFTBALL Taylor Powell earned All-America honors in addition to SSAC Pitcher of the Year distinction that season, while three Warhawks earned all-conference honors and catcher Sarah Angulo took home the SSAC’s Gold Glove award. Prior to joining the Warhawks, Newell posted a 254-121 record in his eight-year stint at Williams Baptist University, setting the school record for wins and winning percentage. He led the squad to a pair of NAIA National Tournament appearances, including a fourth-place finish in 2013. Prior to his arrival at the NAIA school in Walnut Ridge, Ark., the Lady Eagles endured nine straight losing seasons. However, during his tenure, Newell’s teams were ranked in the NAIA Coaches Top 25 for 26 consecutive weeks, including 10 weeks ranked inside the Top 10. Newell guided the program to four consecutive American Midwest Conference championships from 2010-13 and was selected the Coach of the Year four times. In addition, he coached five NAIA All-Americans, eight NAIA Scholar-Athletes, 37 all-conference selections and 102 academic all-conference performers. In 2013, the Lady Eagles finished 46-9 and advanced to the NAIA World Series for the first time in program history. Williams Baptist won 19 consecutive games, finished 16-2 in the AMC and defeated former SSAC power Lee University and perennial power Reinhardt to advance in the NAIA Tournament. The season prior, Williams Baptist finished with a school-record 51 victories, at one point winning 16 straight games. Newell guided the team to a regular season title behind a 15-1 record and a conference tournament championship. Newell began his coaching career at Fredericktown (Mo.) High School, where he started the softball program and coached for five seasons. Newell earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Williams Baptist and earned his master’s degree from William Woods University. He and his wife, April, have six daughters: Gabriella, Juliana, Adalynn, Jillian, Jacqueline and Josephine.

TROY The 1996 season began with an uneventful sweep of Faulkner, but little did anyone know what would happen over the next four months. The Lady Trojans were coming off a season in which they won a school-record 52 games, but lost their first two games in the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament. But in Melanie Davis’ third season at Troy, something clicked and sent the team on the ride of a lifetime. After sweeping Faulkner in a double-header opener, the Lady Trojans lost the first game of a doubleheader to Nicholls State and tied in the second game, 0-0, when there wasn’t enough light left to play. With a 2-1-1 record, the Lady Trojans hosted the Troy Invitational, bringing in Tennessee State, Middle Tennessee, Florida A&M and Jacksonville State. TSU went 4-1 to claim the tournament title, beating Jacksonville State, 1-0, in the title game. After splitting doubleheaders with Mercer and Georgia Southern on the road, Troy went to the Georgia State Invitational. The Lady Trojans went 2-1, beating Georgia State and Tennessee Tech, but fell to arch rival Jacksonville State. Then everything began to click. The Lady Trojans went to Tallahassee, Fla., and split a doubleheader with perennial national power Florida State. After splitting a doubleheader with Jacksonville State, the Lady Trojans lost their first two games in the spring Rebel Games. Troy bounced back to win four in

a row after that and finished the tournament with a 7-3 record. The Lady Trojans then headed to Birmingham, splitting two games in the Samford Invitational, beating Evansville and falling to Tennessee Tech. TSU bounced back by sweeping Samford at home three days later. With a two-game winning streak, the Lady Trojans headed to the Georgia Tech Invitational for more tournament competition. Troy struggled, going 2-4 and losing its last three games. With a difficult non-conference schedule behind them and having made it through with a winning record, going 27-14 after rounding it out with a sweep of Jacksonville State on the road, the Lady Trojans prepped for conference play. Troy opened its conference schedule with a doubleheader split against Youngstown State, but was swept by national power DePaul on the road. With a 1-3 record in conference play, the Lady Trojans had their backs against the wall and came out firing. Troy swept a doubleheader against Central Connecticut State to salvage the first trip through the Mid-Continent East Division. The Troy offense continued its hot streak, sweeping back-to-back doubleheaders against Florida A&M, scoring at least eight runs in all four wins. The Lady Trojans then headed back to Birmingham and split a doubleheader against Samford, dropping a 4-3 decision in the nightcap. On April 26, the Lady Trojans started their final three-day, six-game Mid-Con trip by routing Central Connecticut State

HIGHLIGHTED TEAMS twice. After falling to Youngstown State, 1-0, in the opening game the next day, Troy won the nightcap, 5-4, setting up a showdown with DePaul the next day. Troy came out and played its best two games, sweeping the Blue Demons to finish Mid-Con play with an 8-4 record and momentum heading into the conference tournament. The Lady Trojans came out in the first round against Western Illinois and struggled offensively, dropping the opener, 5-0. With their backs against the wall again, Troy came out firing, beating Eastern Illinois, 5-4, and Western Illinois, 4-3, to set up another showdown against DePaul, this time for the championship. Troy knew it had to win both games to claim the title and picked up a 6-5 win in the opener to force a deciding game. Troy then jumped on the Blue Demons early and won the Mid-Con with a 5-3 victory. With the win, the Lady Trojans advanced to the NCAA Play-In series, hosting the Ohio Valley Conference champion, Southeast Missouri. The Lady Trojans came out and played two solid games, sweeping the best-of-three series with a 3-2 win in the opener and a 1-0 win in the nightcap to advance to the NCAA Regionals. Troy was shipped to the NCAA West Regional as the No. 4 seed, where the Lady Trojans faced No. 1 seed Arizona in the first round. The Wildcats took control early and showed why they were the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, winning easily, 8-0. The Lady Trojans then slipped into the loser’s bracket, where they faced No. 3 seed South Florida. Troy held the lead until the fifth, but fell, 6-5, and was eliminated from the tournament. Troy had four players earn first-team all-conference honors and two players earn second-team accolades. Second baseman Jill Buckley, outfielders Mitzi McLendon and Jennifer Garnett, along with pitcher Megan Schultz, made the first-team. Shortstop Staci Boyette and pitcher Shawn Starling earned second-team honors.

TROY

SOFTBALL

By Jim Egan Troy Messenger The magical season of the Lady Trojans came to a halt as the Troy State softball team was eliminated from the NCAA Division I Regionals. The Trojans (47-22-1) took an 8-0 beating from the Arizona Wildcats, who are ranked second in the nation. Arizona jolted out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. All the runs were unearned due to back-to-back dropped fly balls, and another baserunner scored on an RBI single by Krista Gomez. The second inning was even more horrifying for the Lady Trojans. The highlight of the inning was when AllAmerica Jenny Dalton crushed a grand slam home run, giving the Wildcats an 8-0 cushion. The winning pitcher was Wildcat ace Carrie Nolan, who earned her 11th complete game shutout of the year. The loser was Shawn Starling (15-6), who was pulled out of the game before completing two innings. Jean Salkeld came in to relieve Starling, but the damage had already been done. The TSU offense sputtered, so the game was called after five innings due to the eight-run rule. The Lady Trojans then played and lost to South Florida, 6-5 in eight innings, in the loser’s bracket of the tournament. South Florida drew first blood by scoring four runs in the second inning. Lauren McClendon ripped an RBI-double and later scored on Teresa Palladino’s slap-single. Wright drove in another run with a bloop hit and Melissa Sigmon scored on a throwing error. The Trojans answered back in the third with a run when Michele Falk scored on Mitzi McLendon’s infield single. TSU took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth on three hits and three errors. Staci Boyette doubled in pinch-runner Sherry Bodnar and later scored when USF’s McClendon dropped a sure out at first base. Troy’s McClendon scored the tying run when a fielder’s choice ground ball was misplayed at second. Jill Buckley gave the Trojans the lead when she raced home as McClendon dropped another ball at first. USF tied the game back at five in the top of the sixth when Rhonda Wooder scored on Wright’s suicide squeeze bunt. Neither team could score again until the top of the eighth, when Wright drove in her third run of the game on a deep fly #1 Arizona Arizona #4 Troy State

to center that scored Wooder from third to make the score 6-5 in favor of USF. The Lady Trojans tried to make a desperate comeback but failed. The Trojans had a small rally started with two out but a controversial call at third base ended the Trojans’ season in a heartbeat. Barbara Sherwood dove into second to avoid a line drive double play and was apparently held down by Wooder, USF’s second baseman. The third base umpire initially displayed the obstruction signal, prompting Sherwood to be signalled to third by coach Melanie Davis. However, a controversial call interpretation of the obstruction rule involving double jeopardy resulted in Sherwood being called out, ending the Lady Trojans rally. Monica Triner earned the win in relief. Triner allowed four runs on seven hits in four-and-one-third innings of action. USF’s starter, Jennifer Thompson, came back in the eighth inning to get the save. Shawn Starling, TSU’s third pitcher of the game, was saddled with her second loss of the tournament.

Troy Wins A-Sun Regular Season Outright By Splitting Doubleheader With UCF ORLANDO, Fla. - Troy University split a doubleheader with the Golden Knights of Central Florida winning game one 3-1 and dropping game two 11-8. Sophomore pitcher Jocelyn McCallum gave a dominant performance in game one pitching a one-hitter striking out 12. UCF opened up scoring in game one when McCallum walked two batters, hit a batter, and then walked another to give the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead after the bottom of the second. Troy would answer in the top of the fourth when senior catcher Tamra Howren homered to right-center to tie the game at one. Troy took the lead in the top of the fifth when senior center fielder Jenny Boyd singled down the left field line. Boyd then stole second and third on consecutive plays and came around to score on a throwing error by the UCF catcher. The Trojans would add another run in the top of the seventh when Howren hit a sacrifice fly to the left fielder to score shortstop Caurie Miller. Miller had reached base on a walk, advanced to second on a Boyd infield single, and finally advance to third when right fielder Stacey Dwyer was hit by a pitch. Troy would take game one as McCallum threw a complete game one-hitter. The Stafford Heights, Qld. Australia native improved her record to 17-7 while the Trojans improved to 41-17 overall. In game two UCF once again opened the scoring with a bases loaded walk to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Troy would answer in their half of the second inning when second baseman Brooke Powell singled to left to drive home junior Paige Foster. Caurie Miller then doubled to bring home Powell and Amanda Ragans who reached base on a walk. Jenny Boyd then singled to score Miller and the Trojans held a 4-1 lead after two.

Tamra Howren heads home after hitting a home run to help Troy clinch the championship.

Troy added a run in the top of the third when senior Lindsey Wyatt singled to right field with Sally Jones on first base. A fielding error after the hit was recorded allowed Jones to score from first to give the Trojans a 5-1 lead. The Golden Knights got back on the board with a Stephanie Best home run to center field to cut the lead to three. Best, who leads the nation in home runs with 23, had been intentionally walked in her previous at bat. The Trojans would add two more runs in the top of the fifth when Jones homered to left field to drive in Foster who had reached base on a bunt. It was Jones’ second home run of the season and it gave the Trojans a 7-2 lead. UCF and Troy traded runs in the bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth innings as Best singled to score a runner on second to make the score 7-3 which was followed by a Miller home run to left, her sixth of the year. After five and one half innings the Trojans held an 8-3 lead.

hits while the Trojans committed one error as the Golden Knights took an 11-8 lead over Troy. The bottom of the sixth would be the Trojans downfall as UCF took game two 11-8. UCF clinched a spot in the Atlantic Sun Tournament with the split while the Trojans had already locked up the number one seed in the tournament by splitting with Florida Atlantic on Friday. Troy’s 17-3 conference record gives them the A-Sun regular season championship outright. This is Troy’s first regular season championship since 1999 when the Trojans captured the A-Sun West title with a record of 13-3 in conference play. Troy is now 41-18 overall. The Trojans will go on to host Florida State of the Atlantic Coast Conference in a doubleheader on Sunday, May 1st. Sunday will be senior day for the Trojans as five seniors will play their last home game against the Seminoles.

It was in the UCF half of the sixth for Troy. UCF scored eight runs on six
