2012 Season Preview The 2012 edition of the Troy volleyball team will prove to be a true mix of experience and youth as the Trojans welcome the return of eight letterwinners, including four starters. Among the four starters is junior libero Courtney Cohen, an All-Sun Belt selection in 2011, who set the Troy school record with 525 digs a season ago. Cohen led the league with her 4.57 digs/set average and became just the second All-Sun Belt selection in program history (Meghan Gilroy, 2009). Mixing with Cohen and the other returners will be 10 new faces to the Troy program, including two Division I transfers and eight true freshmen. Alicia Dukes (Jacksonville State) and Brianna Bartlett (Youngstown State) both join Sonny Kirkpatrick’s squad as sophomores after successful freshmen seasons in the Ohio Valley Conference and Horizon League, respectively. Four seniors on the floor, and one on the bench, will prove valuable leaders for the Trojans. Breanna Cullity, Cassie Daniels, Mailande Parker and Devin Von Pingel - the only three-year letterwinner on the squad – all enter 2012 as seniors for the Trojans. Lizzie Clough, another three-year letterwinner, will serve as a student assistant coach after a second knee injury cut her playing career short.

SONNY KIRKPATRICK

Head Coach • Seventh Season • Lycoming College (1991) Record at TROY (Six Seasons): 77-115 (.401) Career Record (20 Seasons): 316-333 (.487)

Elijah “Sonny” Kirkpatrick is in his seventh season at the helm of the Troy University volleyball program, after he became the eighth head coach in program history in 2006. In his first six seasons, Kirkpatrick has posted 77 victories as the head man in Troy while narrowly missing the Sun Belt Tournament on three different occasions, before finally breaking through in 2011. In 2011, the Trojans started the season 12-4 and posted a 6-10 mark in Sun Belt play. Troy finished the season in a three-way tie for the eighth and final spot in the Sun Belt Tournament, and for the first time under Kirkpatrick, made it to the postseason tournament. After a quarterfinal loss to eventual champion WKU, the Trojans finished the season with a 1615 mark, the first winning record for the program since 2003. In addition to the team success, Courtney Cohen was named All-Sun Belt after breaking a school record with 525 digs. She became the second All-Sun Belt selection in Troy history, both coming under Kirkpatrick’s watch. During his first year at Troy, Kirkpatrick led the Trojans to a 9-24 overall record with seven newcomers on the team. The 2006 squad featured only four returning players from the 2005 team. In 2007, Kirkpatrick led the Trojans to a 16-17 overall record and a 7-10 record in Sun Belt Conference play. The Trojans narrowly missed qualifying for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament at the conclusion of the season, finishing ninth overall - the team’s best finish since joining the conference.

In 2008, the Trojans assembled a 13-19 record under Kirkpatrick’s direction. The Trojans finished sixth in the Sun Belt’s East Division with a record of 4-13 in conference matches. The Trojans once again finished one game out of eighth place, the final qualifying spot for the conference tournament. The 2009 season saw the Trojans climb to fourth in the East Division with a final Sun Belt record of 7-10. However, Troy suffered the same fate as the two previous seasons, this time finishing just half a game out of the eighth and final spot in the Sun Belt Tournament. During that 2009 campaign, Kirkpatrick saw one of his players make history as Meghan Gilroy became the first Trojan to earn All-Sun Belt honors in the program’s history. The senior middle hitter was named to the second team after finishing the regular season second in the Sun Belt in kills per set at 4.23. Gilroy, part of Kirkpatrick’s first recruiting class at Troy, finished her career with 1,447 kills, the third most in school history. She also finished her career with 299 total blocks, the most ever by a Trojan. In 2010, the Trojans posted an 11-22 mark including a 3-13 showing in Sun Belt play. Kirkpatrick served as the head volleyball coach at Francis Marion University, a powerhouse in the Peach Belt Conference and at the NCAA Division II level. In six seasons as the Patriots’ head coach, Kirkpatrick took his program from the bottom of the conference standings to a league championship in his final season, with a 29-11 record. That same year, the team qualified for the NCAA South Region. In 2004, Kirkpatrick was named Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year, after leading his team to a 21-14 record. He compiled a 95-115 mark at Francis Marion, and owns a career coaching record of 316-333 in 20 years as a head coach, including eight seasons at his alma mater, Lycoming College. The York, Pa., native’s tenure at Lycoming (Williamsport, Pa.) included a pair of trips to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in 1997 and 1998. Between 1995 and 1999, Lycoming posted a 27-1 mark in Freedom

Vickie Paciski’s 1997 campaign marked one of the best seasons in the history of Troy volleyball. Despite missing five games due to injury, Paciski still managed to lead the squad with 298 kills. However, the most outstanding number was her 488 digs. Paciski only played in 96 sets, giving her a 5.08 digs/ set average, the highest average in the nation. To this day, Paciski is still the only Trojan to finish a season as an NCAA statistical champion. For her efforts, the Richton Park, Ill., native was named to her fourth straight All-Conference team. She finished her career as the Trojans all-time leader in digs, kills and service aces and still sits atop the standings in service aces and digs today. The 488 digs and 5.08 digs/set average she posted in 1997 are still school records today.

1990 Gulf south Conference Champions Without question, the 1990 Troy volleyball team was the most dominant team in school history, and quite possibly one of the most dominant teams in Trojan athletic history. They eclipsed school records in matches played, victories, consecutive victories and allconference selections en route to their second consecutive Gulf South Conference championship. Troy opened the season tearing through five opponents in the Trojan Volleyball Classic and added a win over Alabama State for a 6-0 start. A trip to the Mississippi University for Women tournament proved just as productive as the tournament in Troy. The Trojans went undefeated and knocked off their hosts for the tournament title. A win at Huntingdon College gave Troy a 12-0 record and its best start in program history. Wins over Barry, Jacksonville State and the College of Charleston gave the Trojans a 15-0 mark before they suffered their first setback of the season, a 3-0 loss at the hands of Florida Southern. Troy rebounded in its next match to defeat JSU and claim its third tourney title of the season. Troy continued its winning ways with another road trip, this time to the West Georgia Invitational. Three more victories gave the Trojans their school-record fourth regular season tournament crown. As Halloween approached, something must have spooked the Trojans as they hit the toughest stretch of their season. From Oct. 26 to Nov. 6, Troy dropped five matches, including two at the GSC Pre-Conference Tournament.

With a 10-3 record against conference opponents, Troy earned the top seed for the second straight season and left no doubt as to whom the best team in the league was. In the first round Troy defeated Mississippi College, 15-4, 15-10, 15-6, before needing four games to get past a pesky West Georgia team, 13-15, 15-13, 15-3, 15-7. Jacksonville State came calling in the semifinals and hardly challenged the Trojans after game one. Troy advanced to the championship match with a 15-12, 15-2, 15-6 victory. After JSU got past West Alabama, it was a rematch of double proportions. For the second straight year, the two arch rivals would meet for the GSC Championship on the line. For the second straight day, Troy and JSU would do battle. And for the second straight day, Troy would prevail - albeit not as easily as the day before. The Gamecocks took the first game, 16-14, but the Trojans responded by taking games two and three before dropping game four to set up a winner-take-all game five. More evidence of the Trojans’ dominance over the course of the season can be found when you examine that Troy: won 14 matches by a 3-0 score; won all four regular season tournaments it participated in; was extended to five games just five times in 39 matches and went 4-1 in those matches; went 14-3 against GSC opponents over the course of the season. Junior Susan Hayden, senior Jody Pierce and senior Heather Whitworth were all named to the All-GSC regular season team, while Pierce and Whitworth both claimed spots on the all-tournament team.

The 1990 team was the one that every Troy squad thereafter will be measured against. They were simply the best.

1996 Mid-Continent East Champions The 1996 Troy volleyball team clinched the Mid-Continent East Division title with a 5-1 conference record. The East Division of the conference consisted of two clusters of play, the first in Troy, Ala. and the second in New Britain, Conn. The Trojans defeated Central Connecticut and Youngstown State at home but took a hard loss to Buffalo before they headed up to Connecticut to face all three teams again. Going into the second part of conference play the Lady Trojans had to set their sights high.

ended 15-10, 11-15, 15-4, 12-15, 15-12. Next they faced the two-time defending champions from Valparasio. The Trojans took the Crusaders to four games but fell short in their last match of the season, 9-15, 15-12, 8-15, 9-15. “We really played good, hard volleyball most of the match. If we had put away some chances that we let slip by we could have won,” head coach Ginger Lowe said. “I was proud of our girls that year because we took second in the conference and we had such a good year my first year back. It was real exciting for me.”

“Our main focus was to beat Buffalo,” senior Luann Atz (Causey) said. “Everyday after practice we would say, ‘Beat Buffalo.’ We were so focused on winning conference.”

“Mostly I walked away with my first year here having nothing,” said Atz. “We didn’t have a great team, to setting a goal when I was a freshman and meeting that goal my senior year. I still didn’t get exactly what I wanted, I wanted the whole conference championship.”

The team went to Connecticut with a 2-1 record in conference play knowing that they had to win all three games to take the title outright. In their first tournament match, the Trojans beat Youngstown State, 3-1. But the real test came in the second match when they faced Buffalo.

At the beginning of the 1996 season the Trojans took second in the Bulldog Classic in Starkville, Miss., defeating Mississippi State 15-12, 7-15, 1-15, 15-8, 15-12, beating Northwestern State 15-10, 16-14, 15-2 and losing to Southeastern Louisiana once in the opening match and again in the championship match.

Buffalo took the Trojans to four games but Troy came out on top with a 15-8, 9-15, 18-16, 15-5 win. “It really felt good to beat a team that was much taller and statistically better,” sophomore Brandy Edmundson said.

The next tournament Troy faced was the Jambalaya Classic in New Orleans, La. They fell to all three opponents, Oral Roberts, New Orleans and Iowa State, taking last place in the tournament. “It was a fairly good season, good competition, and a tough schedule,” Lowe said.

“We worked hard to get there,” Atz said. “Everybody worked hard.” After the East Division the next prize for the Trojans was set in Valparasio, Ind. where they had a chance to win the Mid-Continent Conference. Troy beat their first opponent, MissouriKansas City, in a fifth game rally. The match

Troy finished their season 18-14. Five girls were named All-Mid-Continent conference including senior Luann Atz, juniors Julie Keck and Vickie Paciski, and sophomores Brandy Edmundson and Kate Louis. Earning a spot on the All-Mid-Continent Conference academic team were senior Luann Atz, juniors Anne Rewolinski and Julie Keck, and sophomores Kate

Lewis and Kristy Johnson. Atz still holds records today from that 1996 season. She claims the most season assists with 1,554 assists in 1995, the most career assists with 4,971 assists, the highest percentage of assists per game with 9.43 assists per game, the most matches played with 144 and the most games played with 527.

1997 Atlantic-sun West Champions The Troy volleyball team entered the 1997 season with a great deal of expectations and anticipation. The expectations were high because of the presence of three-year starters Vicki Paciski and Julie Keck at outside hitter. The anticipation came with the Trojans’ entrance into the always tough Atlantic Sun Conference. Coming off an 18-14 1996 campaign that saw Troy capture the Mid-Continent Conference East Division title and finish second overall gave the coaches and players reason to look forward to the 1997 slate. The Trojans opened the season with five losses in their first six matches at the Memphis and SE Louisiana Invitationals. The hardest part about the two trips was that three of the losses came in five games. The squad returned to Alabama and swept a pair of road matches at Alabama State and Huntingdon to improve to 3-5. After taking game one from UAB in the home opener, Troy dropped the next three games to the Blazers. The Trojans continued to struggle as they dropped four matches at the Mississippi State Invitational before winning their first home match of the season against Florida A&M. After five consecutive losses, the Trojans caught fire. Troy won four straight matches in an 11day stretch, including a key victory over A-Sun West Division opponent Samford.

After a five-game loss at Northwestern State, Troy improved to 3-1 in conference play with dominating road wins over Centenary and Jacksonville State. The Trojans lost to A-Sun East Division foe Mercer and entered the final week of the conference season with a chance to win the title outright. A three game loss at Samford dropped the Trojans into a tie with the Bulldogs for first place with one divisional match remaining. Troy was not about to let its second consecutive conference title slip away as it shut down Centenary in three games to finish the season with a 4-2 division record. The team dropped two matches before concluding the regular season with a win over South Alabama on Senior Day. Troy fell to eventual champion Florida Atlantic in the conference tournament but finished the year winning eight of its final 14 matches. Senior Vicki Paciski earned first-team AllAtlantic Sun honors after she led the nation in digs with a 5.1 per game average. She became the first NCAA statistical champion in the volleyball program’s history. She also became just the second player in school annals to earn four all-conference honors. Troy also placed seven student-athletes on the Academic All-Atlantic Sun squad, while Angela Kerns was named to the all-newcomer team after breaking into the starting lineup and finishing with a school record 104 block

assists. Her 1.09 blocks per game also established a school record that still stands today.
