Matt Terry

Matt TERRY Men’s Head Coach 12th Season

Entering his second decade at Troy, Matt Terry has provided leadership and vision to both the men’s and women’s golf programs. Terry enters a new role as he begins his 12th season at Troy serving as the Director of Golf after coaching both the men’s and women’s teams during the first 11 years of his tenure. In addition to his role overseeing both golf programs, Terry is in his first season coaching just the men’s team while his protégée Bart Barnes coaches the Troy women’s team. While Terry’s legacy still has many chapters yet to be written, one of the shining achievements during his tenure at Troy will be the addition of one of the top on-campus practice facilities in the country. The state-of-the-art facility features nine holes, putting and chipping greens, a wedge practice area, a full driving range and a new clubhouse. Prior to coming to Troy in the fall of 2002, Terry served as the head coach at Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa, Ala. During his three seasons there, he led the Buccaneers to the national tournament three times, finishing in third place twice before winning the championship in 2002. A native of Moulton, Ala., Terry has been an avid golfer since dropping baseball to concentrate on the sport in high school. He has served as director of the Tuscaloosa Junior Golf Tour, supervising up to 175 children ages 8 to 18. Terry also has experience as a teacher, serving as the assistant pro at the Turtle Creek Golf Club in Rockledge, Fla. Terry has professional experience playing on the Hooters, Central Florida/Tommy Armour and North Florida PGA Winter tours. He also participated in the 1988 PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament, better known as q-school. Troy’s golfers have performed well in the classroom under Terry as the women’s team has won two consecutive Troy Athletics Women’s Team GPA Awards and the men have won three Troy Athletics Men’s Team GPA Awards. Born in Augusta, Ga., Terry received a marketing degree from Alabama in 1996. He is married to the former Dixie McCreless and has three children, Mya (13), Alyssa (10) and Sawyer (3).

Bart Barnes

Bart BARNES

Women’s Head Coach First Season Following four seasons as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s teams, Bart Barnes was named the women’s head coach in Aug. 2013. “This is an exciting time for the Troy golf program with the addition of Bart as the women’s head coach and with the state-of-theart practice facility that is currently under construction,” Athletic Director John Hartwell said. “Bart has done an outstanding job as an assistant coach under now men’s golf head coach Matt Terry, and I have no doubt that he will be a great leader for our women’s program.” Barnes led the Trojans to a third-place finish in his first tournament as the head coach, at the Fred Marx Invitational during the fall of 2013. The Troy women shot an impressive 287 in the final round of the tournament to establish a new Division I school record. Barnes joined the Troy staff in Jan. 2010 following a standout playing career at Middle Tennessee and a stint on the National Golf Association Hooters Tour. “I am excited for this opportunity and am very thankful to remain part of the Troy Athletics family,” Barnes said. “I feel like this is a great opportunity to build on the success that we’ve had and at the same time take advantage of the split head coaches and build a new direction. I want to say thank you to the Troy community and Troy University for having trust in me and to my family and friends for their continued support.” The women’s team is coming off its best finish at the Sun Belt Conference Championships after placing fourth at the event in April 2013. Rising junior Langley Vannoy was the Trojans top finisher after placing 12th. The Troy women claimed three team titles during the 2011-12 season and one during the 2012-13 campaign under the guidance of Terry and Barnes. Barnes began his collegiate playing career at Central Alabama Community College where he earned Academic All-America honors before transferring to Middle Tennessee for his final two seasons. Barnes’ most notable finish during his college career was his final tournament, the Middle Tennessee Intercollegiate, where he placed second. Upon graduation, Barnes was granted the honor of being the under-25 representative for the Alabama State Team in the Southeastern Challenge Cup Matches in 2008. Later pursuing his dreams of playing professionally, he was a member of the National Golf Association (NGA) Hooters Tour in 2009. Hailing from Elba, Ala., Barnes received a marketing degree from Middle Tennessee in 2008. Barnes is currently pursuing his master’s degree in sport and fitness management at Troy University and was valedictorian of his graduating class at Elba High School.

19 Year Men’s Streak (Overall finishes of NCAA Division II)

During the 1972-73 season, the first full academic year of its operation, the AIAW offered its first eight national championships in the same eight sports (badminton, basketball, golf, gymnastics, softball, swimming & diving, track & field, and volleyball). The NCAA sponsored its first women’s championship in each sport in the 1981-82 academic year. Individual athletic programs and, in some cases, individual teams within a program were permitted to choose to participate in either the AIAW or NCAA competitions (or both in a few instances).

Mike Griffin Troy University Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2014 Walk into a clubhouse at any golf course in the Southeast and start talking about “Griff” and there will be no doubt the conversation is about former Troy golfer and national championship coach Mike Griffin. The numbers that tell the story of Griffin’s coaching career are staggering. He led Troy State to national championships in 1976, 1977 and 1984, he amassed a 1,581-642-22 record during his 11year career leading the Trojans and he totaled 4,571 wins over his 36 years at Troy and Auburn. As a show of how dominant the Trojans were, Troy won its first national championship by 31 strokes over second-place UC Irvine. “He was really advanced and ahead of his time as a golf coach in the mid-70s,” former Troy golfer Collin McCrary said. “He wanted us to be in top physical condition and was really advanced when it came to offseason and winter workouts. A lot of the football, basketball and baseball players, who were close friends of mine, would remark about how the golf team was in the weight room as much, if not more, than they were. It really made a difference on the course when we had to play 36 holes in one day.” In addition to winning three NCAA Division II National Championships, Griffin’s teams claimed one national runner-up and finished no worse than fourth in eight of their nine NCAA Championship Tournament appearances. “One of the best things I can say about Coach Griffin is we always knew what his expectations were,” McCrary said, who named his son Griff after Mike Griffin. “He didn’t want to hear any excuses from us, he just wanted to see results. Also, school was very important to him, there were no excuses for not doing well in class.” Griffin was famous for saying, “Success requires no explanations, failure demands no alibis.” Not many explanations were needed during his career as 32 of his former golfers at Troy earned All-America honors and seven of his 11 teams won Gulf South Conference titles. Griffin was named Coach of the Year in all but two of his years at the helm of the Trojans. “We are extremely proud of him and he is very much deserving,” McCrary said. “He has had such an incredible career in golf not only as a coach, but also as a player. Not that many people realize how great of a golfer he was before taking over as the head coach at Troy.” Griffin played as Troy’s No. 1 player in three of his four years as a student-athlete and won the 1968 and 1969 Alabama Collegiate Conference individual championship. Following his collegiate playing career, Griffin won more than 30 major amateur titles before joining the professional mini-tour for two seasons. Immediately following his professional career, Griffin returned to Troy to take over as head coach and his impact was immediate. Griffin coached 15 All-Americans, two Gulf South Conference championship teams, won two NCAA National Championships and a national runner-up all before his 30th birthday. Following his 11 seasons at Troy, Griffin made the short trip to Auburn to take over the head coaching duties for the Tigers. Griffin led Auburn to 18 NCAA Regional appearances over his final 20 seasons on the Plains and was named the Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year on four separate occasions. Already inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame (2000), Griffin’s name will always be synonymous with collegiate golf not only in the state of Alabama, but also throughout the nation.
