THIS ISSUE OF ABERDEEN MAGAZINE is devoted to a local favorite summer pastime – cruising on motorcycles and in muscle cars. We Aberdonians love to cruise, whether it be in a classic old car up and down 6th Avenue, or on a powerful motorcycle down winding country roads. When I was a grade schooler, I got my first introduction to the love of cruising on the back of a 1970 Honda. I would ride with my dad down scenic back-roads outside of Westport, SD. I loved the exhilarating feeling of wind on my face and the power encapsulated by that chrome and steel. I felt free and proud. Proud to be on the back of that bike with the coolest guy I knew. On the weekends my dad would usually pick me up in his red Ford truck to go to the family farm, but sometimes he would surprise me by pulling up on his motorcycle, helmet in hand. We’d cruise down old Highway 281, just two free-spirits with no place to be. But one day my feeling about motorcycles, and my father, changed. I remember my pops pulling up to my mom’s place on that dingy old Honda. I remember thinking of how I would look on the back of that motorcycle, driving down 6th Avenue where I’d go cruising with my friends. I remember feeling humiliated at the thought of everyone I knew seeing me on the back of that bike, with my father, the man who had just become the most embarrassing person in the world. I felt bad for my overwhelming sense of shame, but more importantly, terrified of looking like a little girl. I walked outside and said to my old dad, “I can’t go with you to the farm this weekend. Something’s come up.” At first he looked bewildered, confused. But then he gave me a half-curled grin and said, “Here, I bought you a new helmet.” He presented me with a larger version of the one I’d worn before. “And, this one has a tinted face shield.” I knew I was saved. Saved from the ridicule of my adolescent peers. Saved from facing my own shame, for feeling the way I did about being seen on that bike with my father. And looking back, I now know. My dad was wiser than I realized, and worthy of my pride. Because even though many years had passed between, he was once a child too, a little boy who wanted to feel like a man. //

BLACKOUT MOTORS motorcycle shop owners James and Katie Washnok (whose fashions and customized helmets and bikes are featured in our Style section) are Aberdeen Magazine’s front cover faces (Photo by Troy McQuillen). The couple is pictured on two “His and Hers” Blackout Motors knuckleheads – bikes they had custom-made specifically for their wedding day. James admires his bride next to “Louie” (the black bike) and Katie takes charge on the seat of “Pearl” (the diamond-white bike). The custom frames and gas tanks were designed by James himself (along with the brake brackets, Mooneyes oil tank brackets, forward controls and handlebars). Another contributor to the bikes’ design was Ultimate Upholstery Solutions of Aberdeen (see Profile on page 13). “We built these bikes to commemorate our wedding. They are identical in every way, with the exception of the exterior complementary paint schemes, and mirrored custom Coach seats,” explains Katie. “And ‘Pearl’ is now currently entered in the Sturgis Buffalo Chip’s Top Builder Competition. We’re hoping she’ll advance to the finals that take place at the Legendary Buffalo Chip during the 2014 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.”

WE FORGOT! We realized that in our May/June issue we didn’t tell you where this awesome shot of Aberdeen Magazine’s Birth Doula was taken – Avera St. Luke’s BirthPlace! The Birthplace offers 12 comfortable and spacious private rooms that include whirlpool tubs. In addition, the nursery provides medical support for babies needing some additional help, such as telemedicine support. racy Harms is an Internationally Certified Birth Doula, or more simply put “a woman who serves.” She has been working to give pregnant mothers a more positive birth experience for four years. A Doula’s job is to provide continuous physical, emotional and informational support before, during, and just after a birth. “I believe every woman should be able to have the birth experience she desires when possible,” says Tracy. Tracy meets with expectant mothers a few months prior to the birth, to develop a personalized birth plan. She also instructs women on positions that I LOVE SEEING can be used to ease THE JOY ON discomforts, help EACH MOTHER’S labor progress, and FACE WHEN encourages the SHE HOLDS HER incorporation of NEWBORN FOR massage, birthing THE FIRST TIME. balls, and the partner’s involvement. A Doula’s positive effect has proven results. Tracy notes, “Evidence based statistics show that births with a Doula in attendance have a labor time that is reduced by 25%, the need for pain meds is reduced by 30%, and there is a 60% decrease in the use of epidural analgesia to relieve pain. But most importantly, the overall cesarean rate is reduced by 50%.” Tracy works in a supportive role with healthcare professionals to help make each birth a beautiful and memorable one for her client. Tracy says healthcare professionals appreciate the involvement of a Doula because it improves birth outcomes, “I will help to keep the mother calm, focused and moving around, when possible, to progress the birth along.” // For more information on Tracy’s services, give her a call at (605) 870-2010.

Pheasant City Drive-In, one mile north of Redfield on Highway 281, offers your favorite blockbuster hits Friday through Monday for just $7 a ticket. Make it a family affair! Children under 12 get in free. The drive-in also has a full concession stand and options to watch in or out of your vehicle. Tickets go on sale at 8 p.m. the night of the show and the movie starts at dusk. Bring folding chairs or set up a tailgate picnic. Stacey and Dave Marlow, along with Stacey’s parents, Clark and Rosa Davis, purchased the 1950s theatre in January and saved it by bringing it into the 21st century. “The old technology would have made it more challenging to stay open because of the need to obtain 35 mm film,” says Stacy, “We didn’t want to see our community lose the drive-in.” // CALL 605472-1999 OR VISIT “PHEASANT CITY DRIVE-IN THEATRE” ON FACEBOOK FOR CURRENT SHOW LISTINGS.

Airport Art: A Painted Homage to Aberdeen
“THE MURAL IS LIKE A TRAIN, CARRYING YOU THROUGH THEMES OF THE TOWN THAT FLOW TOGETHER.” – NICOLE FISCHER
IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT YET, you’ve got to check out the new mural at the Aberdeen Regional Airport. Painted by local artists Nick and Nicole Fischer, the mural begins with large portraits of Aberdeen’s founding fathers, Alexander Mitchell and Charles Prior. Next, a train departing from a depot station takes you into two downtown scenes: one of a parade moving past the Capitol Theatre and another of streetcars. Statue landmarks of Justice (standing atop the courthouse) and the bronze sculpture of Andrew Melgaard (Melgaard Park) are marked along the way. Then the courthouse sets a backdrop lined with trees and pheasants in flight. Suffragist and Native American activist, Matilda Joslyn Gage, introduces us to a large portrait in the clouds of her son-inlaw, Frank L. Baum. Mr. Baum creates a storm of story as you see characters from The Wizard of Oz skipping down the yellow brick road. An old homestead looks as though it’s about to be taken by a twister, then Dorothy’s monumental-sized ruby slippers lead on to Aberdeen’s future, with a biplane capable of taking you anywhere you wish to go. //

have been restoring cars for most of my life in some form or another. Cars from the ground up, inside and out,” says Tracy Battest, owner of Ultimate Upholstery Solutions, LLC. He restored his first car at age 16, inspired by his uncle, Gary Weishaar from Hosmer, SD. Tracy grew up seeing his uncle’s collection and interest in cars. He loves the look of old cars. He also loves, “… the sound, and of course, the power. I love a car that not only looks good, but can really smoke the tires.” This summer marks his second year as a vendor at Downtown Aberdeen’s Sizzlin’ Summer Nights car show. “It is such a great event to bring people with the same passion for cars together. It is a great opportunity and draw to Aberdeen.” He’s also THE THING I participated in other shows all over the region in past years, such as the Wheel Jam that takes LOVE MOST ABOUT place in Huron, SD. Tracy opened Ultimate RESTORING Upholstery Solutions in 2001, and running the CARS IS HAVING business has been a full-time job for him and A VISION AND his wife, Alissa, since March of 2004. Ultimate WATCHING IT Upholstery Solutions specializes in automotive COME TO LIFE. upholstery and customizing, and offers full upholstery services, including but not limited to: automotive interior repair, boats, motorcycles, ATVs and furniture. Tracy decided to open his business in Aberdeen because “This is my hometown. All of my family is here and this is where I wanted to raise my family. My wife Alissa is also a born and raised Aberdonian, and we wanted our two boys; Kaden (10) and Devin (6), to grow up with the same great opportunities and experiences we had.” Tracy says the most rewarding part of restoration is definitely the finished product, and being able to drive that product with pride. “Starting that engine, knowing the time, dedication, hard work and craftsmanship that went into a beautiful classic car – that is the best feeling in the world.” //

From ice cream to onion rings, this menu has it all!
B
ONN’S EATS AND TREATS is truly an all-American ice cream hot spot. In both warm and cold weather, this place is a must for lunch, dinner, or dessert. Doors to the little red shop originally opened around 1954 as a Dairy Queen. There have been many additions made to the place since the fifties, such as a drive-thru window and booths for indoor seating. Current owners Jolene and Don Bonn took over the restaurant from Jolene’s parents and have run it as a family business for 19 years and counting. The switch between the popular chain restaurant to a local shop happened in December of 2009, and with that, came the freedom to both improve and expand their original menu. And it’s the menu that makes this place so unforgettable – that, along with memories of the minigolf course that used to run in their backyard. After leaving the Dairy Queen franchise, Jolene and Don
altered their existing menu to include more appetizers, adding classic summer favorites such as mozzarella sticks and hand-breaded onion rings, both with fair-food appeal. Jolene also credits her careful selection of tasty menu items to her customers’ suggestions. And it was those suggestions that led her to create their Big Train iced coffees, a blended iced coffee available in a 23 ounce cup! The food at Bonn’s is always fresh and made-toorder. Jolene says some of her best-selling items are the chicken strip basket (complete with a side of Texas toast), yummy deep-fried cheeseballs, and the ice cream Explosions (similar to a DQ Blizzard). For this Aberdeen original, open year-round, business is always steady. But when it’s summer, the temperature warms up and the customers line up, ready to cool off with a frothy milkshake and a basket of delicious deep-fried food! // MINA SOLINGER CRUNCH ON THESE Fair-style onion rings are a gotta-try. CELEBRATE. Ice cream makes every day a party.

Let’s Get Un-cooking
A
s the saying goes, “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.” I suggest you follow those age-old TIM PIERSON words of wisdom, and try my favorite summer mealtime trick I call “un-cooking,” making a delicious meal out of fresh produce without touching a single knob on the stove. I’ll be the first to admit, we’ve all grown a little weary of the American
compilation we call salad: a flavorless chunk of iceberg lettuce, topped with shredded cheese and prepackaged ranch dressing, garnished with a single carrot stick and peaked-looking cherry tomato. But my friends, I swear to you, there is so much more to be explored in the vast world of salad. To expand your horizons, I’ve written a simple step-by-step recipe that will not only rocket your go-to meal starter into the forth dimension, it will take your classic side salad from supporting actor into the starring role!
TO START YOUR OWN SALAD REVOLUTION YOU MUST:
1
2
3
USE YOUR HEAD The most obvious salad component, although not required, is the greens. It’s hard to know where to start when there are so many bags of chopped and mixed greens to choose from! Watch expiration dates and select a head of the freshest Romaine on the shelf. When you get it home, select a container large enough to fit your whole head of Romaine in it, add the lettuce head and fill the bowl with tepid water. Tepid means a little cool to the touch, but not cold enough you can’t hold your hand in it. Let the lettuce soak for ten or twenty minutes, then trim the brown edges from the top, chop and spin dry.
GET DRESSING A commercial can fill your subconscious with images of oceans of salad dressing cascading over perfect lettuce at the state fair. However, many bottled dressings are full of fat, salt, sugar and preservatives. So, you’ll be happy to find out it’s surprisingly simple to make our own much healthier dressing from scratch. Put a tablespoon of fair quality wine vinegar in a small, deep bowl or food processor. Add 1 or 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard, a pinch of kosher salt and a dash of white (or black) pepper. Measure 4 tablespoons of olive oil into a small cup or pitcher. Either run the food processor while slowly adding the oil, or whisk the oil into the vinegar mixture in the bowl until thickened. You’ve made enough dressing for at least two salads!
AT THE TOP Sorry folks, but that’s usually not bacon. Prepackaged salad toppers are often loaded with artificial ingredients. Instead of grabbing that motley mix, generously pile on additions such as dried fruits, roasted nuts, red onion or even pickles. Hearty toppings like these make your salad worthy of center stage. Don’t be afraid to try several different combinations of greens, dressings and toppings. Begin to experience how versatile fresh ingredients can be. The possibilities really are endless when you turn off the heat and start un-cooking!
AND THERE IT IS – IN THREE EASY STEPS THE LIBERATION OF THE AMERICAN SALAD HAS BEGUN! JULY/AUGUST 2014 |

Ferris Wheel Onion Rings A DIY summer indulgence
T
here is really no replacement for the legendary onion ring. To me its sacred circle represents the endless cycle of hot, happy summers made complete with an accompaniment of hot dogs and sunshine. That flavor-packed batter, wrapped around a big slice of white onion gives good reason to deviate from calorie-consciousness and indulge at a local diner or the county fair. A reasonably delicious onion ring is not hard to find. I’m not terribly picky when it comes to delicious, deep friend goodness, but making them myself? That is a different story! I’ve toyed with a few recipes over the years, and many of them ended with a coating that was rock hard, or coating that melted right off the onion ring and burned in the oil. But at last! I’ve settled on a recipe hybrid – a happy compromise somewhere between breading and tempura.
YOU JUST CAN’T BEAT THE TASTE OF CRISPY FRIED ONION RINGS WITH A SIDE OF TANGY KETCHUP!

INGREDIENTS TO START YOU WILL NEED 1 qt. Vegetable oil (for frying) 3 large white onions sliced ½ inch thick AND FOR THE BATTER: 1c. flour 1c. cornstarch ½c. corn meal 2t. baking soda 2t. baking powder 2t. sugar 1t. salt 2 eggs 2c. ice water
FIRST OF ALL, before you do anything else, heat your oil. If you wait until after you start making the batter, you will find that the first batch you fry falling apart, resulting in floating pieces of batter in oil that slowly burn and fill your house with smoke. Also, note that every time you put something in the oil, the temperature will drop. If your oil is not hot enough the first batch will over cool the oil, and disaster will ensue. Don’t let this happen to you! I like to heat my oil on medium high (level 6 on ½ INCH SLICES MAKE FOR my stove) for about 15 NICE HEARTY RINGS minutes in a pan with a tall lip to allow for oil that is at least 4 inches deep. Make sure that there is a good amount of space between the top of the oil and the lip of the pan (for your own safety). Also, it’s very important you keep children out of the kitchen during this time, or take precautions. Hot oil can be very dangerous! So keep a sharp eye on it, and don’t forget to turn off the stove when you are through. Tip: If you have to add more oil to finish your batches, allow 5-10 minutes for oil to re-heat evenly.
WHILE THE OIL IS HEATING, mix all dry ingredients. I like to use my KitchenAid for this. Now, throw in all of the wet ingredients! Think “really loose pancake batter” when judging the consistency. It will start to fluff a bit due to the baking powder and baking soda, so you might want to make quick work of the battering and frying process. AFTER CUTTING MY ONION RINGS to about half an inch thick, I sort of unfurl them from one another. I then throw as many in the batter as I can fit while still being completely submerged, and leave them to soak while I fry in batches. This seems to provide for less of a mess in the end. With a butter knife or a chopstick, carefully drop each battered ring in the hot oil (one at a time) so that they both float on the top and have enough room between one another for the batter to expand. PLEASE try not to plop them in, you do not want to get burned! After a minute or two, gently turn each ring over so the other side can get browned, then carefully lay on a flattened paper bag, topped with lots of paper towels, to eliminate any excess oil. Repeat until all batches are finished. Enjoy with a big blob of ketchup and an ice-cold glass of lemonade. It’s so close to fair food you can taste it! // LAUREN YARBOROUGH NIKOLAS

Killing Lincoln by Bill O’Reilly and Martin DuGard
O
n July 9, The AMPL Book Club will discuss the nonfictional account Killing Lincoln by Bill O’Reilly and Martin DuGard. The narrative takes place from April 1 to July 7, 1865. It is divided into four parts: Total War, The Ides of Death, The Long Good Friday, and The Chase. Part One begins fourteen days before President Abraham Lincoln’s death, the last days of the Civil War as General Robert E. Lee and his troops have “begun to starve.” Part Two describes the final days of Lincoln and the plotting of John Wilkes Booth as he enlists co-conspirators, planning to eliminate Lincoln and his associates: General Grant, Secretary of State Seward, and Vice President Johnson. Part Three portrays Lincoln’s last day and the long vigil as the president lay dying in the bedroom of a boarding house near Ford’s Theater. Part Four reports the search for Booth and other key figures in the months following that moment President Abraham Lincoln “slumps forward in his rocking chair.” When a friend recommended this book to me, I was initially reluctant to read it because I knew that one of the authors (Bill O’Reilly) was the host of GUNPOWDER a political commentary program. A group of friends who were committed to an alcohol and drug free lifestyle, dreamed up the Spirit Riders Motorcycle Club in 2003. They all loved to get together and ride their bikes, but didn’t care to participate in some of the typical lifestyle choices associated with bikers.

THE ORIGINAL FOUNDING MEMBERS were biker buddies Kenny Sobeski, Gary Dutenhoffer, Tom Scott and Dave Brown. The Spirit Riders Club quickly grew in numbers and at its peak, was 30 members strong. Today, the Club is made up of between 15 and 20 bikers on any given ride.
Throughout the years, Spirit Riders performed what used to be known as Poker Runs – benefit rides organized to raise money for Worthmore Addiction Services of Avera St. Luke’s. Spirit Riders wanted to share the joy of a substance free lifestyle with others, so chose Worthmore as their beneficiary. The club has since expanded their beneficiaries to include such civic causes as Aberdeen Area Humane Society, Kids Against Hunger, Honor Flight, and Make-A-Wish.

Spirit Riders has also pulled together for their own members in the tradition of service. When one Spirit Rider was diagnosed with a serious illness, the rest of the club rode into action to help alleviate the burden of resulting medical expenses. In 2008, Tom Scott, a man whose life was a true example of what the Spirit Riders Motorcycle Club is all about, came to the end of his journey. The club joined together again, for one of their own, and held a memorial ride in Tom’s honor. FOR THE FIRST SEVERAL YEARS, Spirit Riders held very formal monthly meetings, dividing into committees that would concentrate on such topics as; event planning, volunteering and public relations. They would also meet on a more social basis for what the group now referrers to as supper runs. These were rides created to give club members the chance to share in the camaraderie that comes out of a mutual love for motorcycles. Monthly supper runs still go on today.

I got my first motorcycle when I was 14,” she recalls. When Jackie got a bit older, she became swept up in the busy life that comes with family and had to set her passion aside. But when she met Rich and began riding again, her passion for the feeling of wind in her hair and sunlight on her face was reborn.

DOWNTOWN ABERDEEN ON THE RISE IN 1911
IN 1911, IF YOU WERE TO GET ON TOP of the Citizens Building and cast your view south down Main Street, this is what you would have seen. The Citizens Building sits on the corner of 2nd Avenue and Main Street. Its five stories made it the tallest building around for several years. This view reveals a great deal of the Aberdeen landscape. In fact you can see NSU’s campus just left of the tower of the First United Methodist Church. This is the third installment of historic panoramics we’ve featured. This series of historic photos was discovered on the Library of Congress’s website. Fortunately they were scanned at a decent resolution. We’re not sure what sort of camera the N.A. Brothers were using in 1911 to shoot these stunning panoramic shots, but we sure are glad they took them! The camera did have its limitations, however. You can see the outer edges of these pictures get fuzzy, while the center stays nice and crisp. //
The Sherman Hotel, located on the corner of 3rd Avenue and Main Street, was a major landmark for Aberdeen. Many will remember its sad fate; the upper floors were removed and replaced with a troubled parking deck. Built in 1908, it was converted to a parking ramp in 1969, and the lot was later redeveloped into the Sherman Apartments.

The Krikac Administration Building on NSU’s campus was built in 1907. This building just underwent a major restoration of the auditorium space in the upper level. All the stained glass was restored along with several historically conscious modern updates. Go check it out.
The First United Methodist Church, built in 1908 on the corner of 5th Avenue and Lincoln Street, still graces our downtown skyline to this day. Thank God!
This building is still standing at 311 Sv. Main Street although none of the cool decorative elements exist. The building immediately to the right is the Hong Kong Chinese buffet at 309 S. Main Street. It too has been stripped of its architectural elements.
This is the Champlin Block, better known today as the Webb Shoe building. It was built in 1907 at 317 S. Main Street and restored in 2013.
Olwin Angell built this two-story department store in 1903, then added a third story in 1914. The building is undergoing restoration and adaptive reuse as apartments.
On the corner of 4th and Main stood a marvelous Federal Building. It was built in 1907 and destroyed in the late 1930s. Then JCPenny was built in its place several years later. Pictured here is the Masonic Temple, built in 1897.
Aberdeen Magazine’s corporate office is located at 423 S. Main Street on the corner of 5th and Main. Alas, our building was not built until 1917.
Aberdeen’s electric trolley cars operated from about 1910 to 1920. The cars were powered by overhead electrical lines, some of which were attached to buildings.
The Appel Block, located on the corner of 3rd and Main, was built in 1904 and is currently in the process of being lovingly restored.
This marks the intersection of 4th Avenue and Main Street.
