EXPERT ORTHOPEDIC & SPORTS MEDICINE CARE IN YOUR COMMUNITY
GETTING BACK TO LIFE WITH LESS PAIN
Sanford Aberdeen provides expert orthopedic care for the community Mary Collins spent too much time accepting pain as a part of her life. The 51-year-old Aberdeen resident recalls her experience. “I struggled with knee pain for about two years,” she says. “Standing for long periods of time or walking were such a struggle for me.” Not only was Mary’s lifestyle severely affected, so were her friends and family. Family vacations, events, or even just an evening walk was tough for Mary, causing others to wait for her to catch up. Finally, Mary sought help for her knee, but wasn’t happy with the services provided. She didn’t feel the physician was listening to her needs. Soon after, she began working at Sanford Aberdeen Medical Center as a kitchen supervisor, where she was working on her feet all day long.
Knee replacement was her best option, and last July, Dr. Lister performed the surgery. Mary spent approximately three weeks at home recovering, then transitioned to working part time, and now has returned to full time work.
“After my very first appointment with Dr. Lister, I knew I was in the right place.”
Physical therapy was also part of her recovery process, which she also received at Sanford Aberdeen, providing Mary with a strong continuity of care from the beginning to the end.
“I’ve completed my outpatient physical therapy program and now perform exercises at home,” she says. “While I am still recovering, I am so pleased with the results. My husband even noticed that I’m able to keep up better than before, and I’m not even fully recovered yet.”
–Mary Collins
“I would go home at night after work and not be able to do anything but sit,” Mary says. “So I knew something needed to be done, but I wasn’t sure since I felt my doctor wasn’t providing the care I needed.” Then she heard about Daniel Lister, MD, boardcertified orthopedic surgeon, joining Sanford Aberdeen and was eager to make an appointment. And that was Mary’s first step toward regaining her life before being plagued with knee pain. “He really listened to me, and what my concerns were. I could tell he was committed to helping me find relief
500-53110-0356 1014
for my knee pain.” After an initial scope of Mary’s knee, Dr. Lister explained that the reason for her knee pain was quite obvious. The cartilage in her knee was gone, so the bones in her knee were rubbing directly against each other.
Mary is grateful for the expertise and compassion provided by Dr. Lister and the rest of the team at Sanford Aberdeen for helping her regain her life. “Dr. Lister was so personable,” she says. “I would recommend him to anybody dealing with joint pain, as he will do his absolute best to help provide relief.”
Sanford Aberdeen offers orthopedic and sports medicine care for a variety of services including: • General sports medicine needs (for adults and student athletes) • Arthroscopy of the knee and shoulder • Total hip, knee and shoulder replacements • Carpal tunnel and hand surgery To provide the full spectrum of care for our patients, we also provide physical and occupational therapy services in the same location.

EDITOR’S NOTE
FROM BARB ANDREWS
CONTRIBUTORS
On the Quest for Aberdeen’s Finest
his issue of Aberdeen Magazine is dedicated to “Aberdeen’s finest.” Aberdeen has so many riches to offer. We’ve really got it all: from gourmet dining and drink, to our infinite number of options for exquisite retail, artistry and decor. Pretty impressive for a town 70 miles from the interstate and so humble in size. The variety of fine goods and quality entertainment might be taken for granted by some, but the imaginative spirit of the Aberdeen entrepreneur has made such an abundance of local luxury and simple pleasures available for the indulging. Aberdeen’s finest isn’t segregated to shopping, dining and entertainment. We boast some of the finest folk the region has to offer: highly respected civil servants, individuals dedicated to expansion and expression in the arts, and those who inspire others to strive for a life of better health and an attitude of optimism. In this issue, we’ve uncovered the best of the best Aberdeen offers to help you celebrate everyday life, along with the many festivities that surround the holiday season. We've got endless ideas for that perfect gift, and the primo essentials you’ll need to throw the swankiest of holiday parties, including a decadent spread of goodies your guests will love. We’ve also got some great suggestions for you from one local holiday party planner who throws a kitschy theme party every year, one that keeps guests reminiscing until the next one comes around. So get ready to indulge in the following pages filled with Aberdeen’s finest, as we reveal to you the silver (and gold) lining that can be found all over this swanky little town. So in consideration of this issue’s theme–Aberdeen’s finest–I set out to find a seasonally fitting version of what I consider to be one of Aberdeen’s finest–a favorite winter beverage-the finest cup of creamy, delicious, piping hot chocolate Aberdeen has to offer. There’s no beating a frothy mug of rich, creamy hot chocolate on a cold winter morning. In fact, it used to be the only thing that could coax me out of bed for a long day of school. I was an only child, and my mother raised me with just the right balance of coddling and tough love. Tough love came in the form of her uncompromising belief that I must get a good education. It might be cold outside, but unless hell had frozen over, I was going to school. The coddling is where the hot chocolate came in. She’d wake me up and say “straw.” Before even opening my eyes, I’d open my parched lips, just enough to make room for the top end of that welcomed bendy straw. Then I’d proceed to slam a full mug of hot chocolate, and I mean slam it, not taking a single breath until I heard the bubbly sound of that last slurp when you’ve regrettably reached the empty bottom of a cup. Nowadays I have to get myself up in the morning and yes, sadly, with no one feeding me hot chocolate in bed. So, sluggish and longing for the lost coddling of my youth, I decided one cold winter morning that I would set out to discover the finest hot chocolate in the city, and with that, a way to meet my need for nurturing in the form of chocolaty goodness. I tried the trendy gourmet hot cocoa, an overwhelming circus of flavors, colors and garnishes topped with sprinkled flair. I tried the old fashioned diner-style hot chocolate, served in a white ceramic mug and adorned with mini marshmallows that floated on top of a watered-down frothy pool. At my bottom, I became so desperate to recreate that lost childhood flavor, that I tried the “just add hot water and Styrofoam cup” powdered mix from the cupboard of the breakroom at work. But nothing could reach the untouchable memory of my mother’s hot cocoa, a taste that scarcely still lingered on my tongue. And then one day, by pure accident and in the most unlikely of places, I finally found it–the chocolate fountain of my youth. A coworker asked if I could pick her up a hot chocolate on my way to work, a hot chocolate from M & H gas station. “Grab one for yourself too,” she said. “They have the best hot chocolate.” With skepticism, I filled two Styrofoam cups. After allowing mine to cool a bit, I slowly brought the small opening on the plastic lid to my mouth. And that my friends is the moment I discovered it. The absolute finest hot chocolate in all of Aberdeen. Now on those winter mornings, when I wake to the feeling of adulthood’s cold hand slapping me in the face, I’ll force myself out from under my warm blankets and make my usual stop at M & H. I grab a Styrofoam cup, fill it all the way to the top with the absolute best hot chocolate in town, and poke in a straw. I do this knowing that with a little tough love and just the right amount of self-coddling, I am ready to take on the world. //

ON THE FIRST DAY OF KLEIN’S CLOSEOUT SALE, MARLENE KLEIN PROUDLY STANDS IN FRONT OF THE BUSINESS SHE AND HER HUSBAND MERLE STARTED 52 YEARS AGO. “THIS STORE HAS BEEN OUR LIFE AND WE’VE LOVED IT. IT’S SAD TO CLOSE BUT IT’S OKAY, BECAUSE THERE IS A START AND A FINISH TO EVERYTHING,” MARLENE EXPLAINS.
Say Farewell to Klein’s Aberdeen’s classic craft store is closing up shop

| ABERDEEN MAGAZINE NOV/DEC 2014
AFTER 52 YEARS, Klein’s owners Merle and Marlene Klein, along with their son Rick, have decided to close the doors of Aberdeen’s eclectic little craft store forever. Klein’s first opened in 1962 as Little Big Dollar. During a trip to Minneapolis Merle and Marlene visited a Little Big Dollar store and that, along with Merle’s passion for retail, inspired them to open a similar store in Aberdeen, one that specialized in craft supplies. Later, Klein’s expanded to include a “store within a store,” adding wedding supplies, florals and party supplies to their repertoire. After relocating to their current building, Klein’s added additional specialty items such as quilting fabric and frames. “We decided to add quilting fabric to our inventory because our customers began requesting it after two local fabric stores went out of business. We’ve always tried accommodating our customers’ specific requests. I guess that’s how we ended up with such a huge variety of items,” says Marlene. The Klein family made the decision to close for many reasons. “Business is getting more and more difficult. Some items we’ve traditionally offered aren’t as popular as they used to be, and we’re now faced with increased competition from places like Walmart, Hobby Lobby and the Internet,” Marlene explains. In addition, the couple is now in their mid-seventies and their son Rick doesn’t want to keep the store going without the whole family being a part of it. “Merle and Rick plan to keep our satellite location in Watertown open for the time being,” Marlene adds. The Aberdeen Klein’s will be closed by the first of the year. Before then, stop in to snatch up one last deal and take the chance to say farewell to an Aberdeen classic. //

NIKKI WALTER UP TO THE CHALLENGE
N
NIKKI LOVES SHOWCASING LOCAL BUSINESS WHEREVER SHE CAN. IN ADDITION TO HELPING HER CLIENTS GET MORE EXPOSURE ON KSFY, SHE ALSO WORKS WITH LOCAL SPONSORS REVIVE DAY SPA AND SHOE SCIENCE TO PREPARE FOR UPCOMING COMPETITIONS AND PHOTO SHOOTS. “I THINK IT’S VERY COOL THAT THEIR WORK IS SEEN NATIONALLY NOW!” SAYS NIKKI. “IT’S ON BODYBUILDING.COM, IT’LL BE IN TRAIN MAGAZINE, AND ANY OTHER PUBLIC APPEARANCES THAT I DO.”
ikki Walter is a BodyBuilding.com athlete, a fitness model, a clean eating coach, and a media specialist for KSFY. But above all, she’s a mom. And according to her eight-year-old daughter Addison, she is the coolest mom ever. Nikki grew up in Holabird, SD, and graduated from Northern State University. After living in Minneapolis for a short time, she moved back to Aberdeen, got married, and took a job at the Chamber of Commerce. Nikki had always dreamed of going into the fitness industry, but felt the timing wasn’t right. However, after her husband Nathan was diagnosed with cancer, and eventually passed away in 2011, she began to look at things differently. “The whole journey of his illness was eye-opening for me,” says Nikki. “You hear people that go through situations say ’life is too short, live it while you can’, that type of thing, but you never understand it till you go through that.” During the ordeal, Nikki and Addison’s faith in God was strengthened, and Nikki’s commitment to a healthy lifestyle for her and her daughter grew. Inspired by the people she met in the cancer ward, and friends and family who had supported her, Nikki decided to pursue her dream. She hired fitness coach Brandon Fokken and began training for her first fitness competition, which she entered in 2013 and won, despite her inexperience. Encouraged by her coach, Nikki entered the 2014 BodyBuilding.com BodySpace Spokesmodel Competition. She placed 4th overall and was signed on as an affiliate in May. As a single mom, Nikki wants to make sure that Addison is a part of everything she does, whether it’s teaching snack prep for kids at the clean eating parties they host, or tracking progress and picking outfits for her next competition. Addison has even appeared with her mom on BodyBuilding.com and on their YouTube channel, which has earned Addison a few fans herself. Addison isn’t able to travel with her, however, and Nikki is especially grateful for her support system, including friends and family like Grandma Judy, who help out when she’s away. Nikki hopes to see perceptions change about bodybuilding and fitness competitions. She acknowledges that there are negatives and positives in bodybuilding, just like any other industry, but says her goal is to be true to her values and inspire others. Nikki uses her platform as a sponsored athlete to encourage people to set goals, work hard, and go after their dreams. “My advice to everybody is if there’s something you want to do you should do it, because it doesn’t matter what age you are, what race, or how healthy you are, your life could end today and it’s not our choice. So love the people you’re with, have quality time, and do the things you need to do. Live with no regrets.” //

Up-and-coming celebrities mingled with the crowds and posed for pictures. This year’s festival started on Wednesday night with a slate of films targeted at hunters and outdoors people. The Festival concluded Sunday with a day of family fun movies. In all, 78 movies were selected and shown from over 300 entries. The South Dakota Film Festival began in 2007 as a way to shine some light on the South Dakota moviemaking landscape. It has been generously supported by South Dakota Tourism, Capitol Cinema, and hundreds of area sponsors since then. Mark you calendar for next year’s festival; September 23-27, 2015. //

The Moccasin Creek Country Club experience
B
EYOND ITS AMBIANCE OF HUMBLE SOPHISTICATION, a picturesque view of the countryside and meticulously maintained golf course green, Moccasin Creek Country Club offers an atmosphere of both comfort and community. Complete with a gourmet restaurant, fully stocked specialty bar, and a golf supply and gift shop, there’s no debating that the Country Club is indeed one of Aberdeen’s finest. Moccasin Creek Country Club first opened in 1971 as the “Prairiewood Country Club.” In 1978 the club reorganized and became the member-owned Moccasin Creek Country Club. To fully enjoy all of the amenities the Country Club has to offer, one must become a member. However, both golf and social memberships are available, and you don’t have to be a member to come try out the many advantages the Country Club has to offer. Potential members are invited to come out for a one time visit to the club. While you’re there, take a guided tour of the facility, wet your palate with one of the endless selections of fine beverages from the bar and stay for dinner. One of Moccasin Creek Country Club's

The restaurant’s executive chef, Jacob Collins, enjoys the opportunity cooking at the Club has given him to employ the full potential of his culinary skill. Through new dishes and flavors that create a fusion of exotic and familiar, Jacob has the chance to utilize the expertise he’s gained through his degree at the Cordon Bleu cooking school of Minneapolis. After graduating in spring 2010, Jacob began working as an executive chef for Minerva’s. He then decided to join on as Executive Chef of the Country Club late this past summer. Jacob brings a signature cooking style to the Country Club that can be best described as “Midwestern cuisine with a French flair”. One of Jacob’s favorite menu items is an entree called “Bacon Wrapped Scallops,”–a tender medallion wrapped in applewood smoked bacon, topped with maple whiskey glaze, and served alongside steamed asparagus and wild rice pilaf. Another favorite of his is the “Stuffed Grilled Cheese,” an adult version of the childhood classic. Complete with Granny Smith apple slices and thick cut bacon, this Country Club original is stuffed between two slices of grilled wheat berry

The Elegance of Antipasto A festive fusion of color and simplicity
I
LAUREN YARBOROUGH NIKOLAS
love throwing holiday parties in my home! I love everything- from designing the invitations, to planning out the small details and decor. However, as any hostess will tell you, it can take weeks of planning and preparation to pull off a single four hour party. It is a lot of work. So, when the festive day finally arrives, after deep cleaning my home, decorating, and taking care of my three small children, I hardly have time to get showered and dressed before the guests arrive–much less serve up a perfectly timed, hopelessly complicated menu. If you can relate, do not despair! This doesn’t mean you cannot still impress. Thanks to my easy-to-assemble Antipasto Platter served alongside Festive Hummus!
ANTIPASTO PLATTER Servings: 10 ROASTED GARLIC
ROASTED PEPPERS
• • • • •
• • • • • • • •
5 heads of garlic 5 t. olive oil heavy duty aluminum foil sharp knife cookie sheet
ROASTING THE GARLIC
When selecting the garlic, try to choose heads whose cloves are all the same height. Carefully cut the top off the head with a very sharp knife, so that each clove is internally exposed slightly, then pour a teaspoon of olive oil on top. The oil will seep in and around the husk while it is roasting making it easy to remove in the end. Lastly wrap each clove with foil and bake at 400 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes. Set aside three roasted cloves for a garnish to top the hummus recipe.
PLATTER ASSEMBLY • 3 packages of crumbled feta cheese • olive medley (4 jars of assorted olives such as kalamata, black and green) • 10 T. balsamic • 10 round pitas (cut into triangles) Symmetrically assemble your serving tray by attractively grouping together all finished ingredients (reserving 1 red pepper and 3 garlic cloves for hummus recipe). Then line the tray’s edge with half of the pita triangles and drizzle balsamic on top. ANTIPASTO OFFERS GUESTS A CELEBRATORY ARRAY OF FLAVORS AND COLORS.

6 red peppers 6 T. olive oil cold water (for submerging) large bowl salt to taste cookie sheet warming dish tongs
ROASTING THE PEPPERS
Roasting peppers is a fairly easy process, but you must watch them closely as they can burn easily! Simply set your oven rack on the highest, or second highest shelf. Then broil, leaving the oven door slightly ajar. You should be able to hear the skin crackle. Once the skin is blackened and loose on one side, turn and roast the other. It should only take a few minutes, so be vigilant. When the roasting process is complete, move the peppers to a bowl of cold water with tongs. Then carefully peel the skin off. You can now put them in a warming dish filled with the olive oil and add a sprinkle of salt.
FESTIVE HUMMUS Servings: 10 HUMMUS BASE • 3/4 c. tahini • 3/4 c. water • 3 15 oz cans of garbanzo beans (drained and rinsed) • 3/4 c. fresh lemon juice • 3/4 t. salt • 3 cloves raw garlic • food processor OPTIONAL: 1 ripe avocado, 2 T. red salsa, 1 roasted red pepper and 3 cloves roasted garlic (reserved from antipasto recipe), paprika, parsley and cumin. Now simply throw all of the above ingredients into the food processor! So easy, right? And if it seems a little too thick, just add more water, one tablespoon at a time.
OPTIONAL FLAVORS:
Make your hummus more flavorful and festive by dividing your finished batch into three. Put the first batch into a serving bowl and garnish with three cloves of the roasted garlic and a sprinkle of cumin. Now, put the second batch back into the food processor and add one whole avocado. Then scoop into a separate serving dish and Serving garnish with red salsa. Then rinse the food Suggestion: processor, put in the third batch of humOffer pita mus base, along with a roasted red pepper triangles, corn chips, (reserved from recipe above) and blend. and assorted vegetable Scoop that into a third serving dish and spears for dipping sprinkle with paprika and parsley.

JACOB BOSMOE A JAKE OF ALL TRADES
L
ocal artist, teacher, and entrepreneur Jacob (Jake) Bosmoe, has been making art in one form or another for as long as he can remember. But his talents don’t end there. Jake is truly a jack of all trades. He’s been a teacher, an intern assistant principal, and has worked as a drywaller for the past seven years. “I have also flipped three houses and am working on my fourth. In addition, I’m somewhat of a homemaker and often find myself cooking elaborate meals and running vacuums.” All the while, Jake has continued to focus on his art, “I have completed numerous art commissions over the years and hope to create many more in the years to come!” Jake also enjoys participating in community projects (whenever his busy schedule gives him the chance). “I volunteer to work with the Fallout Art Community at the Red Rooster a few times a year and make it a point to attend as many local art events as possible.” When Jake is making art, or creating anything for that matter, he often finds himself in a state of “flow.” “The rest of the world takes a step back and I am focused only on the task at hand. My mind is clear, my hand moves decisively, my eyes are focused, my attention is narrowed, and my conscious mind is set at ease– move the pencil, chop the carrots, pull the saw, and remain in the present.” Jake feels very strongly about encouraging the existence of art in the lives of others and within the Aberdeen community. “Art is important to humanity because it is a powerful avenue for the expression of ideas. Language, music, art, and dance have enabled us to build an intricate system of personal, spiritual, and societal relationships (that have come to span the entire globe), thereby creating the most complicated and developed group dynamics known to this small corner of the multiverse.” Encouraging others and strengthening the presence of art within the Aberdeen community are two of the reasons Jake decided to open his own art gallery, Aberdeen Originals. Jake used to drive around town, looking at old buildings and interesting spaces, envisioning their potential for being turned into a gallery. “Aberdeen Originals will provide the community with access to products that are handmade by current or former residents- paintings, ceramics, jewelry, lotions, soaps, leather goods, furniture, picture frames, lamps, greeting cards, and whatever else someone out there might be making and offering for sale.” Aberdeen Originals opened on October 1st and is located in the historic Hulu Architecture building at 9 2nd Avenue SE. // Artisans who are interested in consigning with Aberdeen Originals should contact Jake via email at jacob.bosmoe@gmail.com.

RON PARKER
I
THE PIANO MAN
f you haven’t heard local musician Ron Parker perform yet, there’s a good chance you will soon. With his ease at the piano, soulful vocals, and infectious personality, he has earned a reputation as one of the most versatile and entertaining musicians in the area. Ron first moved to Aberdeen in 2006 to help a friend start a church. After working as an associate pastor for two years, he decided to branch out on his own. Ron considered leaving Aberdeen, but with teenage kids in school he was reluctant to move. “Doors began to open that allowed me to work as a self-employed musician,” Ron says. “And I’ve been very happy doing it for the past five years.” Making a living playing music can be a challenge, especially in a smaller town. “I’m not sure if there is really such thing as a full-time musician in the traditional sense of the word,” observes Ron. “If you want to play an instrument or sing for a living most musicians need five money-making outlets at any one time.” Ron divides his time between teaching private lessons, directing at Central High School, providing accompaniment for Northern State University, working part-time at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and playing various gigs throughout the month. “I play all kinds of gigs,” laughs Ron, “parties, banquets, weddings, receptions, funerals, restaurants, clubs, but my favorite are church services! I also perform in retirement facilities and nursing homes.” Depending on the occasion, he will play and sing either jazz standards or hymns. For just one man and a keyboard, he has a great way of engaging a crowd and creating the right atmosphere for an event. Despite his busy and sometimes unpredictable schedule, Ron also has several other projects in the works. “I’m very excited about the ’Community Worship Event’ I’m working on with Josh Latterell (of The Journey church) coming in February or March of next year. I’m also performing around town with Velvet Soul, a four piece jazz combo that my good friend and singer Matthew Harmel and I are partnering on.” Ron also just released a gospel album called The Power Project that will be available on iTunes soon. Over the past five years, Ron has performed with some of the best musicians in the state, including saxophonist Tyler Pridey, drummer Doug Rezac, and singer Kellyanne Kirkland. He is grateful for the opportunities Aberdeen has given him, and for the chance to share his story, “Publications like yours that celebrate local happenings is just one more reason why living in Aberdeen is so great!” // Photographed at The Dakota Event Center

The Art Forger by B. A. Shapiro
O
n November 12, the AMPL Book Club will discuss the thriller The Art Forger by B.A. Shapiro. This novel was inspired by an actual event, the largest unsolved art heist in history, which took place at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts in 1990. The story is told from the point of view of Claire Roth, a struggling artist living in modern day Boston. The book has three plot lines: the present day life of Claire, the story of a scandal three years earlier, and the influence of Isabella Stewart Gardner, who established a fine arts museum in the nineteenth century. The author shifts easily back and forth in time, clearly marking each story-line. Claire Roth is driven to become known through her art, but she is hindered by a scandal, which has made her an outcast in the art world. Claire makes a living in the legal world of art reproduction. Then a well known gallery owner, Aiden Markel, presents Claire with a moral dilemma. He asks her to copy one of the works of art stolen in the 1990 heist. In exchange, Aiden offers Claire $50,000 and an exhibition of her art in his gallery. He makes the point that it is not illegal to make a copy of a painting. It FRENCH VANILLA becomes a crime when a copy is sold as an original. Your Party Planning Guide
Amy Frink’s 4 steps to the ultimate holiday bash!
A
my Frink’s wheels start spinning each year around this time, as she commences to plan another legendary holiday home party. She begins brainstorming on the unique elements and themes that will define this year’s famed bash. Amy Frink and Tom Black are widely known for configuring one of the most famed holiday parties around. The home party they host each year is filled with imaginative elements that are anything but typical. After hosting twelve annual holiday parties so far, Amy’s figured out four basic elements that guarantee success. So she’s decided to share with our readers her top four tips to make your holiday gathering a hit!
1
2
CHOOSE A THEME. After receiving a party invitation, one of the first questions you might ask yourself is, “What should I wear?” Take out some of the guess work and add in the fun by giving your party a theme that offers the opportunity for an accompanying costume. Once you’ve chosen your theme, you can use that as a guide to help select appropriate refreshments, games and decor that fit into the theme’s context. Some inspiration for themes are: a classic holiday movie, an ugly sweater party, or a faux prom. Check out "Pinterest" online for national trends. Amy says you’d be surprised by how much adults love the opportunity to play dress-up. And watching as guests show up in costume–an instantaneous ice breaker.
3
MAIL PERSONAL INVITES. Amy feels an essential component to any great home party is a personal invitation in the form of a handmade paper invite. Design your invite to reflect the theme of your party. Include specific instructions on anything from suggestions for food and drink that guests can contribute, to ideas for costumes and instructions for games.
Love Your Kitchen and Bathrooms Again! Custom Cabinets and Design
4
MAKE A GIFT, TAKE A GIFT. Rather than passing out generic party favors, or bringing impersonal gifts that no one really wants anyway, have guests bring something they’ve made themselves and do a blind gift exchange. Any gift is acceptable, as long as it was made by the giver themselves. You don’t have to consider yourself a skilled artist to create your own one-of-a-kind present. Gifts that have been exchanged at Amy’s parties have ranged from hilarious to high art. Think outside of the gift “box”.
Cabinet Refacing and Redooring 1 Day Wood Restoration HAVE A POTLUCK.
Everyone loves showing off their favorite family recipe or newly acquired culinary skill. Encourage guests to bring a dish to pass, and if it happens to fit in with your party’s theme, all the better!

OPEN HOUSE
a
modernandarts crafts bungalow Welcome to the Home of Aberdeen Magazine’s Troy and Suzette McQuillen AS THE PUBLISHERS OF ABERDEEN MAGAZINE, Troy and Suzette McQuillen often find their way into these pages. This time it’s their house that makes an appearance here. While it is one of our goals at the magazine to showcase interesting homes around town, quite often home owners are a little shy about letting us in. American Bungalow magazine recently ran a short blurb about the McQuillen house. We felt others might like to take a peek inside this modern arts and crafts bungalow. Troy and Suzette restored a 1926 home on Jackson Street just off Sixth Avenue. Their appreciation of historic character, rich wood, and an open floor plan led them to architect Brad Ciavarella of Mitchell, SD, who was known at the time to be a preservation architect. They began the discussions with Ciavarella in 2007 and he interpreted their style of living, Troy’s love of Greene and Greene Architecture, and the desire to be able to view the Moccasin Creek from everywhere in the house. The lot chosen for the new home was in the northeast section of Aberdeen, on the banks of the Creek. Construction began in 2008 with Suzette as the general contractor. Local seasoned homebuilder Joe Gese, Junior agreed to bring the arts and crafts home to life. He and a crew of two built the house in about nine months. The McQuillens moved in January 1, 2009. The first thing a visitor notices when entering the front door of this story and a half home is the view of the vibrant blue Moccasin Creek. The creek up in the Northeast part of town is relatively clear, has no odor, is full of fish and turtles, and attracts many birds and animals year round. The second thing noticed is the amount of wood used everywhere. Nothing exotic, just custom milled oak. Because of the distinct arts and crafts style, design decisions concerning the details were relatively simple. Troy’s favorite story to tell about the house is that all of the oak trim, milled in multiple widths in three different thicknesses, cost less than the budgeted amount for factory produced trim, which just wasn’t thick enough. If they could have picked up their quaint, 1926 house and located it on their creek-side lot, they would have. However, the look and character they achieved with similar building materials of yesteryear provided a classic new home that Suzette affectionately refers to as her dream home. Troy, on the other hand, says it is a great house for their forties, and would love to begin to explore something different as they ease into their fifties. //

Effective use of space was top priority when determining the home’s layout. Therefore, you will note the lack of corridor-style hallways and excess wall space, generally only useful for hanging pictures.
THE KITCHEN, which is open to the living room, features cabinets made from quarter sawn oak and retro-style pulls and handles. The lights also reflect the charm of arts and crafts styling.
THE FORMAL DINING ROOM has been festively decorated just in time for the holidays by Lily’s Floral Design and Gifts. Coordinating vignettes in mixed metallic carry the eye from the table to the buffet and then to the wreath on the wall above it. Playful ornaments hang from the light fixture, adding a touch of whimsy.

SPOTLIGHT
COFFEE WITH NEW POLICE CHIEF DAVE MCNEIL by Barb Andrews Photos by Troy McQuillen
CHIEF MCNEIL says what it means to him to be an officer of the law was most eloquently summarized in a radiocast by Paul Harvey, titled What Are Policemen Made Of? The following is an excerpt that pulls out some of Harvey’s main points: “A Policeman is a composite of what all men are, mingling of a saint and sinner, dust and deity. He must make an instant decision, which would require months for a lawyer to make. The police officer must know every gun, draw on the run, and hit where it doesn’t hurt. He must be able to whip two men twice his size and half his age without damaging his uniform and without being "brutal." A policeman must, from a single strand of hair, be able to describe the crime, the weapon and the criminal- and tell you where the criminal is hiding. The policeman must be a minister, a social worker, a diplomat, a tough guy and a gentleman.” (Compliments of COPatch)

"WORKING AND LIVING IN THE COMMUNITY AS A POLICE OFFICER HAS PROVIDED ME WITH THE ABILITY TO DEVELOP PARTNERSHIPS AND RELATIONSHIPS. AS I TRANSITION INTO MY NEW ROLE, I WILL USE ALL OF THE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES I HAVE LEARNED AND UTILIZED OVER THE LAST 22 YEARS AS MY GUIDE IN BEING AN EFFECTIVE CHIEF TO THE DEPARTMENT AND THE COMMUNITY."
AVE MCNEIL, ABERDEEN’S NEW CHIEF OF POLICE as of September 15, understands he’s been given an important job. That’s why each morning, fueled with a cup of strong coffee and “anything with chocolate,” he begins looking for the best possible way the Aberdeen Police Department can work to protect and serve our community. He’s seen it all and has been made ready for the challenge. Twenty-two years ago, a young graduate from the University of South Dakota with a degree in criminal justice, McNeil hit the streets of Aberdeen as a Patrol Officer, armed with a desire for justice and a heart for service. His fair-minded approach to law enforcement, along with a self-driven disposition, got McNeil promoted from Officer to Sergeant, and later to Captain. Then, on September 15 of this year, he gratefully accepted the opportunity to put on his newest hat and become the Chief of Police. CHIEF OF POLICE DAVE MCNEIL WILL PUT HIS FOCUS ON THREE MAIN GOALS: Excellence in Customer Service. Chief McNeil says one of the most important concepts he’s learned over the years is that providing excellent customer service is key. This is why he’s chosen to make customer service one of his main areas of focus. “It may seem odd to use a phrase like ’customer service’ in law enforcement but it is very relevant. Customer service means that our department and staff approach each call for service or citizen contact with an attitude of professionalism, respect, and transparency with the citizens we serve. Even when enforcing our laws it is important for us to engage citizens in a way that allow the citizen to maintain their dignity during the encounter,” McNeil explains.
Recruitment and Retention. Chief McNeil plans to focus on the recruitment and retention of new officers. “It is imperative to recruit people who are community oriented and see our department as a long-term career opportunity,” he states. A lot of time, money and on-thejob experience is required in order to effectively train a new officer. “Once a person is trained and they have gained experience in our community, I want to see that staff member stay with our agency,” McNeil adds. That’s why strengthening retention of staff is a crucial component to ensure a strong department, excellent customer service and a safer community.
Obtaining Community Input. Chief McNeil would like to utilize the authority his new position has granted him, in order to encourage an open dialogue between the Aberdeen Police Department and the community they serve. “I plan on engaging our community and my staff in the coming months to gather input and set goals,” says McNeil. In the coming months, Chief McNeil will be researching avenues whereby Aberdeen’s citizens can communicate what they determine to be the community’s most pressing issues. In addition, McNeil plans to facilitate opportunities for the APD and community to work as a team in order to address those identified needs.

The familiar white Dodge Charger isn’t the only means today’s Aberdeen Police Department uses to patrols our city streets. The huge Public Safety Building garage houses a variety of transportation options to get APD officers most effectively from point A to B.
Aberdeen’s officers of the law aren’t afraid of getting a real workout. The Treck shown here is specifically manufactured for use by police officers. When weather permits, the bicycle is beneficial in that it makes an officer more accessible to citizens and allows them to patrol in areas where a car could not go. Officers who patrol on bike receive special training to do so.

STRUCTURES OF GRANDEUR HOMES THAT ONCE BOASTED ABERDEEN’S FINEST IF YOU WANDER INTO THE DACOTAH PRAIRIE MUSEUM, you’ll find a lot of interesting things from Aberdeen’s past, even in their bookstore! Grab a copy of A Souvenier of Aberdeen: The Railroad Hub of the Dakotas, a reprint of a book published by Aberdeen in 1907. This book was originally printed as a sales tool to show the folks back East how sophisticated and upscale Aberdeen was becoming in just under 30 years. The great thing about this reprint is that it is annotated by the late, Aberdeen historian, Don Artz. Don regularly
AUTHOR: Troy McQuillen PHOTO: A Souvenier of Aberdeen: The Railroad Hub of the Dakotas
researched old Aberdeen newspapers at the library, pouring over their contents, jotting down facts he found interesting about Aberdeen’s movers and shakers. He noted these discoveries throughout the pages of this book, details such as where those folks lived and worked, and the ways in which they contributed to our great city. One detail of particular interest within the book is the plethora of photographs documenting Aberdeen’s countless huge, swanky houses. Many of these homes are still around today, though you might find some of them are hard to recognize, as they’ve since become masked by overgrown trees. Go for a Sunday drive and zigzag through the one way streets between Sixth Avenue and Northern State University. If you look closely, you’ll be able to spot several of the houses that are pictured in the book. The house shown here (from page 58 in Artz’s book) was built in the Queen Ann Victorian style, and was no doubt quite colorful. It still stands on the corner of Seventh
Avenue Southeast and South Washington Street. It was built for Walter Mason, a successful probate attorney and avid historian. The house included quarters on the third floor for servants, who definitely would have been needed for a house of this size. Many may recall an odd, now removed structure behind the building, that appeared to be an addition of motel rooms. I vaguely remember signage for the inn. If anyone has any more facts about this beauty, please share. This great house has been converted to several apartments, as so often happens with these homes near NSU. Stop in to the Dacotah Prairie Museum and pick up your copy of A Souvenir of Aberdeen: The Railroad Hub of the Dakotas. Then take a nice scenic drive through the streets of Aberdeen’s history. As you pass by the Mason house pictured here, look closely so as not to miss some of the home’s original details, such as the stained-glass porthole windows. Luxuries such as these could at one time only be afforded by Aberdeen’s finest. //
A Souvenier of Aberdeen, The Railroad Hub of the Dakotas was first printed in 1907 by the Aberdeen Commercial Club (the predecessor of our Chamber of Commerce). It was republished in 1992 by the Aberdeen/ Brown County Landmarks Commission.
