Traveling In a Post Covid World

As evident by the security lines at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, travel is back. Destinations across the globe are welcoming tourists, and you might be one who is ready to jump on a plane again. But before you book your spring and summer vacations, be sure to familiarize yourself with these tips for traveling in today’s post-Covid world.

What Is Today Likely Won’t Be Tomorrow

Just because you looked up travel requirements when you booked your trip, doesn’t mean you are up-to-speed when it’s time to travel. Over the past couple of months, we’ve seen significant changes as the various variants have come and gone. Make sure you regularly check your intended destination’s official Covid travel website for the most recent updates.

Destination Entry Requirements

When deciding on a destination, be sure that you understand what that destination requires of you before arrival. Most specifically, you will find that many island destinations like Hawaii, Turks & Caicos, and the U.S. Virgin Islands will have varying levels of hoops to jump through before you can even board your plane.

These might include providing proof of vaccination, negative Covid test results (when the test must be taken, what type of test is required, and sometimes even specifying which labs they accept tests from), an attestation of health, specific travel insurance coverage during your stay, and the list goes on. Plus, keep in mind that many countries require that you have a valid passport that does not expire within six months of your visit.

Safety Protocols at your Destination

Additionally, some destinations (like Hawaii) also have guidelines to follow once you arrive. You may be required to show proof of vaccination to visit restaurants, use an Uber, go on excursions, and more. You also might need to take additional Covid tests during your stay.

Returning to the United States

The United States currently requires all visitors (citizens and otherwise) to provide proof of a negative Covid test to enter the states. Many resorts will offer this testing on-site and some even cover the costs of the tests. Familiarize yourself with the procedures you’ll need to follow in order to get your test results in time for your return flight. Remember, if you’re traveling to Hawaii, the US Virgin Islands, or Puerto Rico, you don’t have to “re-enter” the United States so you will not need to take a test to return home.

Travel Safely

If you feel comfortable traveling, by all means get out there! Just make sure you are aware of and follow all of the new protocols governments are putting into place to keep their citizens and tourists safe. And don’t forget to reach out to a travel professional who can help guide you through this constantly-evolving and difficult new world of travel.
