THERE’S NOTHING LIKE CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF RACING There’ll be plenty of excitement at Kimba Racing Club on Sunday, March 17 when it celebrates its 100th Cup meeting – the 10th since relocating to Port Lincoln’s Ravendale Park Racecourse. Celebrations kicked off way back in November – with the Club hosting a 100 Years Gala Dinner – but there’ll be more festivities on Cup day. Click here for more information about the 100th Kimba Cup and to take advantage of celebratory hospitality packages available. The event is also a Fashion at The Races heat, making it an ideal opportunity to dress up and celebrate in style.

MORPHETTVILLE GETS A NEW LOOK Adelaide’s premier racing destination – Morphettville – has a new logo. Designed to take the iconic location into the future, the logo takes into account the heritage of the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) while giving a contemporary feel to the venue. Its style is linked to the historic SAJC gates (pictured left) which currently grace the mounting yard at the track and were formerly at the Cheltenham Racecourse. The new logo will be displayed at the Morphettville entrances – so next time you’re at the track, be sure to check it out.

Proposal gets hearts racing Fashion wasn’t the only thing in the spotlight at this year’s Fashion at The Races competition at the Coopers Kangaroo Island Cup. Fashion at The Races entrant Janelle Fisher may not have been crowned the winner of the event’s automatic qualifying heat but she came away with an even bigger prize when her long-time partner Garth got up on stage and proposed. The unique proposal was coordinated with MC and South Aussie With Cosi host Andrew ‘Cosi’ Costello, who called Janelle up on stage on her own mid-way through the competition to allow Garth to get down on one knee. The romantic gesture set crowd hearts a flutter but it only took Janelle a moment before she said yes. There’s nothing like proposal at The Races...

ince being crowned Miss Universe Australia in 2008, Myer Ambassador Laura Dundovic has become quite the style icon. Not only does the 25-year-old have the enviable job of Myer Ambassador alongside Kris Smith, Lauren Phillips and Jennifer Hawkins – she’s the host of FOX8’s Dating in the Dark and the face of Skin Active/Skin Doctors.

This year Laura will head to Adelaide for the first time to judge the Myer Fashions on the Field competition on Adelaide Casino Adelaide Cup day. We caught up with her to get her fashion tips and expectations before the big day.

Q&A

with laura dundovic

1. What are some of the new race wear trends for the coming Autumn/ Winter?

3. What are your tips for pulling together the perfect race day outfit?

The race wear trends that I am loving for the Autumn Winter season are winter floral, the peplum, lace and leather detailing. For men, a navy suit is a must have and accessorising with deep tones such as grey, midnight blue and wine tones will complete the look.

The perfect race day outfit is achieved by considering each and every element. It is about attention to detail and co-ordinating the look from head to toe, considering footwear, the dress, millinery, bag, and jewellery, it must be well put together with each piece complementing the other.

2. What’s one of the biggest fashion faux pas you have seen at the races – how can people avoid this? The biggest fashion faux pas at the races is when race goers forget about the Racing Club’s dress regulations. Ladies should remember that races are all about elegance and sophistication and should always pay attention to hemlines and avoid strapless dresses.

4. What’s the most essential part of any race day outfit? Millinery is essential and is a key element to any race day outfit. There are so many amazing milliners ranged at Myer Adelaide and at a variety of price pointsFillies collection, Max Alexander, Peter Bettley, Morgan & Taylor, Collection and Gregory Ladner.

5. How do South Australians vary in their approach to fashion and style to people from other states? South Australians tend to dress in a very elegant and sophisticated way, which is perfect for a day at the races. You notice that they embrace trends, although will always tailor the look to make it their own, which I love. 6. Who’s your favourite race wear designer and why?

7. What’s the best part about being an ambassador for Myer? Being a Myer Ambassador is such an amazing experience, I get to travel to so many different places around the country for local racing, places that I have never been before. Although, I would have to say the absolute highlight is having access to the latest and most on-trend fashion, it is every girls dream!

My favourite racewear brands would have to be Manning Cartell, Aurelio Costarella, Wayne Cooper, Wayne by Wanye Cooper, Hi There from Karen Walker and Jayson Brunsdon Black Label.

The wine has a light green straw colour. The lifted aromas that jump out of the glass are bright and clean - ginger, fresh lemon and lime juice. The palate is full, textural and structured with a spine of natural grape acidity and a zesty, clean finish.

This wine is pale straw in colour with green tints. The aromas are focused in the tropical fruit spectrum with notes of passionfruit and lychee as well as box wood, coriander and fennel. The palate is full of delicious juicy gooseberry and feijoa flavours with great mouth feel, depth, length and acid balance, with a refreshingly crisp finish.

This wine has a deep black red colour and excellent clarity. It displays lifted notes of pepper spice, nutmeg and caraway seed with lashings of boysenberry mixed with spearmint. The palate is medium bodied and seamless with an abundance of choc-mint, raspberries and black cherries, all wrapped up in integrated, well seasoned oak.

Serve with: Grilled chicken breast with basil pesto.

Serve with: Mixed cheese platter with quince paste.

This wine is dark garnet red in colour with high clarity. The nose is very fragrant with intense cassis and cedar dominating the aromas. There are some underlying nuances of fennel and damson plums. This is followed by a generous, medium bodied palate with lovely, succulent tannins which carry the flavours of blackcurrant, sandalwood, liquorice and morello cherries.

Serve with: Prawns served with lime and chilli mayonnaise and coriander.

Serve with: Moroccan spiced lamb chops with mint and turmeric yogurt.

Mount Gambier’s

FASHION QUEEN

W

hen it comes to dressing for the races, Wendy Richardson is Mount Gambier’s Queen of Fashion.

“It’s great to see more and more people get involved over the years – what started as an event with 10 people has now attracted up to 100 entrants,” Wendy said.

“It’s about getting people excited for the event with an opportunity to hear from jockeys and trainers and also see some of the latest fashions,” she said.

For 20 years Wendy’s business Redgum Country has sponsored Fashions on The Field at the Mount Gambier Gold Cup – and she’s rightfully gained her reputation as the region’s finest fashion advisor for the popular event.

“While people have always enjoyed getting dressed up for the event we’re seeing more and more people make an effort and it’s a real mix of generations who like to get involved.”

“Guests actually have thought that our fashion parades are something out of Melbourne – they are just that good!”

“I’ve been dressing people since my business started 23 years ago and since getting involved with Fashions on the Field we have certainly become the racing shop of Mount Gambier,” Wendy said. “If you’re going to the races, we’ve got something that will make you look the part – from full outfits to the perfect accessory.” With a passion for fashion and a day at the races, Wendy says she’s been thrilled to see the fashion stakes raised over the years, with more and more people wanting to be a part of the Fashions on the Field competition.

For Wendy, there’s a real sense of pride in seeing her event go from strength to strength – not to mention seeing her fashions on the podium on race day. “It’s nice to help people to look and feel their best,” she said. “Fashions on The Field is a great part of the Mount Gambier Cup Carnival and it really helps to get people involved – I’ve really enjoyed being a part of it for all these years.” But it’s not just the fashion that Wendy likes to promote. An avid racing fan, there’s nothing she enjoys more than a good day at the races and she hosts a cocktail party the week prior to the event each year to get people in the racing spirit.
