MELBOURNE CUP COMES TO SOUTH AUSTRALIA NARACOORTE RACING CLUB AND THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY CLUB (SAJC) WERE TWO OF 34 DESTINATIONS ACROSS AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND SELECTED TO BE PART OF THIS YEAR’S EMIRATES MELBOURNE CUP TOUR.

T

he tour gave South Australians the opportunity to get up close and personal with the

three-handled, 18-carat gold cup which is valued at $175,000 and is rich in sporting history. The iconic trophy visited Naracoorte in early October together with Sheila Laxon, trainer of the 2001 Melbourne Cup winner Ethereal, who shared her experiences and spoke of the Cup’s meaning to people across the world. Milliner Jen Marsh (pictured left), who represented SA at the national final of Myer Fashions on the Field Women’s Racewear competition as part of this year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival, was one of many locals who took up the opportunity to view one of Australia’s most famous sporting trophies. The Cup then travelled to Adelaide where more South Australians gathered to see it at the SAJC’s

ut the organisation’s distinctive yellow stripes and firefighting hose are just two out-of-the-

ordinary materials which have proved to be a creative inspiration for South-East Milliner Jen Marsh. “I’m often inspired by unique materials,” Jen laughed. “One day I looked at the neon yellow hose used for forestry firefighting and thought to myself I think I could make a hat out of that.” During the week Naracoorte-based Jen is a Regional Prevention Officer with the Country Fire Service (CFS). But during the evenings Jen dedicates her time to hand making hats and fascinators and on weekends you’ll find her frequenting race meetings across South Australia and occasionally interstate. “I’ve always enjoyed the social aspect of country racing. It’s a great day out with friends,” said Jen, who prior to moving to South Australia frequented many country race meets around Griffith, NSW. “Then one day I was heading off to the races and I couldn’t find a hat to match my outfit so I decided to make my own. “In 2005 I took things a step further course – I’ve been hooked ever since and now I have my own website (www.marshmillinery.com) and I create made-to-measure hats for friends and clients in my spare time.” Jen often finds her inspiration in everyday items. “I wore a wire fruit bowl hat to Adelaide Cup in 2011 and managed to place second in Fashions on the Field,” she laughed. “I keep an eye on the trends but I don’t have a lot of opportunity to go shopping

STYLE FILES: A LOOK INSIDE SOME OF THE ULTIMATE TRACKSIDE WONDERLANDS

R

acing is a sport recognised as much for its fashion and style as it is for its thoroughbreds. It is – by its very nature – a fast-paced, vivid and colourful

sport. The thunder of hooves, the clink of glassware and the swish of the latest glamorous race wear makes a day at the races a sensual feast for the eyes and ears. Colourful flowers, the green grass of the track and fine food and wine completes the often spectacular entertainment experience. In this edition of TRQ we take a peek inside some of the unique trackside spaces created by the country’s best stylists and event managers.

Flemington Racecourse

For many years, the Melbourne Cup Birdcage has been the premium marquee at Flemington Racecourse. It is where popular faces – from models and actors to the sporting elite and emerging entrepreneurs – watch the race that stops the nation in spectacular style. The enclave is filled with luxurious, often multi-storied tents where privileged guests enjoy an unceasing flow of champagne and lavish catering. The entertainment often extends to opera singers, pop stars, acrobats, dancers and more – and you can see how some people can spend all day at the Birdcage and never concern themselves with the racing. There are usually around 35 invite-only marquees which make up the Birdcage, with companies making a significant outlay of anywhere up to $1,400 a head to entertain guests. In 2013, millions of dollars were lavished on corporate hospitality marquees featuring Middle Eastern temples, nightclubs, beach cottages and even a replica of the Moulin Rouge.

MOET & CHANDON MARQUEE Moet & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes Day

Gorgeous and glamorous Sydney-siders descend on Royal Randwick Racecourse each year for Moet & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes Day – held as part of Spring Carnival at the Australian Turf Club. The most hotly contested ticket is the exclusive Moet & Chandon Marquee – a premium marquee themed in traditional gold, synonymous with the prestigious Champagne. High profile guests enjoy free flowing French in gold goblets and decadent canapés while viewing all the trackside action. This year, Jennifer Hawkins and Kris Smith were two of the famous faces who injected star power into the day as representatives of Myer.

BMW Caulfield Cup Day is an important event in the Spring Carnival and no fashionable type would pass up a ticket to the Pegasus Marquee. Located in the stylish corner of the Caulfield Racecourse, the Pommery Champagne is always flowing in the Pegasus Marquee as the music pumps loudly and racing personalities mingle. This year the marquee was decorated to perfection with vintage style Laura Ashley armchairs, sofas and mirrors as well as Jonathon Alexander wallpaper– all styling was by Simply Georgeous Occasions. Adding to the sophistication and vibe of the marquee, birdcages hang from the ceiling and fresh flowers are scattered throughout in milk bottle vases. Always a star-studded affair, this year’s event included some of Melbourne’s biggest names including BMW Caulfield Cup Carnival Fashion and Social Ambassador, Giaan Rooney, former AFL footballer Shane Crawford as well as Home and Away actors and media personalities.

KANGAROO ISLAND

PACK A PICNIC

while you’re there, why not pack a picnic of local produce or create your own food trail? We have a few favourites to recommend which cater for all tastes and budgets:

SUNSET WINERY, KANGAROO ISLAND Colin Hopkins has teamed up with business partners Athalie and David Martin to produce fine wines and foods using only produce from the Island. On offer at Sunset Winery is a total food and wine experience including a savoury platter comprising Kangaroo Island kalamata olives and sticky figs, homemade dip using local products and a selection of cheeses. To cap it off, Sunset Winery offers a selection of wines including the award winning 2013 Sauvignon Blanc (a Silver Medal winner at the 2013 National Cool Climate Wine Show). The Sunset Winery is located just minutes from the SeaLink ferry station at Penneshaw.

ISLAND PURE SHEEP DAIRY Island Pure Sheep Dairy has been a pioneer when it comes to producing milk from the large flock of sheep that graze on the massive Cygnet River property, located just ten minutes from Kingscote. Island Pure is a unique food experience that is truly Kangaroo Island. The dairy is famous for its range of high quality Mediterranean-style cheeses and yoghurt. The entire range is handmade from 100% sheep milk and each batch is unique with slight variations and attention to detail ensuring all the produce is of the highest quality. Island Pure’s authentic milk products include yoghurt, sheep milk cheese, ravine des casoars (haloumi), le casuarinas (feta), cassini (manchego) and du coudic (kefalotiri).

CLIFFORD’S HONEY FARM No visit to Kangaroo Island is complete without tasting Jenny Clifford’s celebrated honey icecream. Kangaroo Island is the only place in the world where pure bred Ligurian bees - initially imported from Italy in 1884 - still exist. The island’s strict ban on bee and honey imports has protected the colony and enabled local apiarists to harvest. Visitors to Clifford’s Honey Farm can learn all about the history, the social structure of bees and how they communicate. Clifford’s Honey Farm is located just 15 minutes from the ferry terminal at Penneshaw on Elsegood Road.

THE OYSTER FARM SHOP Fresh from the sea to you, The Oyster Farm Shop at American River is just ten minutes from the ferry and offers locally farmed oysters Monday to Friday.
