hey’re the perfect way to spend a balmy summer evening and they’ll be in full swing again this year – with Twilight Races held across South Australia in December and January.
The action kicked off early this month with Mount Gambier Racing Club and Oakbank Racing Club hosting their Twilight Races on December 3 and December 10 respectively, with both events attracting a mass of racegoers ready to welcome the festive season and enjoy some great horse racing at the same time. Next is the SAJC’s Flight Centre Christmas Twilight Races at Allan Scott Park, Morphettville Racecourse on December 17 - an ideal way to enjoy a night out and some great racing, with a range of private and syndicated hospitality options available as well as trackside picnic sites.

There will be plenty of racing and a smorgasboard of local produce on offer – a great way to spend a summer night and celebrate the holiday season.

Spring in the spotlight
I
t may not have been the warmest spring that South Australia had seen but that didn’t stop thousands of glammed-up racegoers joining in on a variety of spring racing festivities at Allan Scott Park Morphettville Racecourse – even if it meant adding a jacket to their latest racing outfits. The season started off with the unveiling of the SAJC ‘Face of’ the Spring Racing Carnival – Natasha Martinello - as part of an official season launch in the Diva Lounge at Allan Scott Park, Morphettville Racecourse. An experienced model, Natasha was chosen as the face behind all the frivolity of the Spring Carnival in Adelaide, with her flair for fashion and radiating smile a perfect fit for a day at the races.
The launch itself was simply stunning – including displays of VANI-T products, beautiful headwear from milliner Jayne Warne, hats and fascinators by Sintra, shoes by Gracious Me Shoes and ties by Ivy League. Guests were kept entertained by DJ Reelax on the decks with special guests Bruce McAvaney, MP Michael Wright, Josh and Karolina Carr, Thunderbirds Coach Jane WoodlandsThompson and Andrew ‘Cosi’ Costello adding to the fun. Melbourne Cup Day on November 2 saw thousands of people flock to the races to celebrate the fashion and fun of Melbourne’s Spring Racing Carnival – with a local Adelaide twist.
Despite being across the border, local racegoers were kept up to date with all the Melbourne action via the big screens – while also enjoying a full program of live racing on the Morphettville track. And just like Cup Day at Flemington, fashion was the focus in Adelaide, with the Fashions on the Field competition hotly contested. Perhaps one of the biggest highlights of this year’s Spring Racing Carnival was the inaugural Jansz Hats & High Tea – an event to coincide with VRC Oaks Day on November 4. Designed just for the ladies, guests donned their most glamorous hats and headpieces to attend the event – spending the afternoon indulging in an afternoon of savoury and sweet petite delicacies and Jansz bubbles. Among the special guests were Channel Nine’s Kate Collins and Mix 102.3’s Jodie Blewett.

he inaugural Pink Diamond Race Day was just as it promised on November 27, with hundreds of guests enjoying a flamboyant, fun and outrageous day trackside to help raise funds for the McGrath Foundation.
With superb hospitality on offer and the entertainment to match, including a silent auction and raffles, the event surpassed expectations – raising more than $14,000 for the cause. The MC on the day was the lovely Rochelle with Fifi & Vonni, with lucky prize winner Pamela Nunn taking home the $5000 Middleton’s Fine Jewellery pink and black diamond bracelet. The SAJC would like to extend a huge thank you to all who donated items and purchased raffle tickets on the day and give a special mention to Ann Middleton OAM – Diamonds International Award Winner for her significant ‘diamond’ contribution to the event.

Farewell Fitzy & Jules
T
hey’ve hosted marquees, highlighted their fashion prowess and even dressed up as horses for a round of ‘Turdles’ but now it’s time for us to bid farewell to Nova 919s Fitzy and Jules and make way for ‘Rod and The Flack’. Fitzy, Claire and Jules are hanging up their headphones and while Claire will be sticking around to play a key role in the new breakfast show, Fitzy and Jules will be moving on. We’d like to welcome Rod and The Flack and we hope that the “two blokes who are mad about their footy” are equally as mad about The Races in 2011.
There’s no doubt they’ve got big shoes to fill – we’re already starting to wonder how they’ll fare at The Races. Will Rod be more fashionable than Jules? Will The Flack pick more winners than Fitzy?

lassic looks with a punch of colour will fly off the racks this racing season.
That’s according to the fashion experts at the Norwood Parade Precinct’s finest boutiques.
“You can’t go wrong with a good quality, pure wool suit and a silk tie. “If you take care of it will last for years and you’ll look the part on any occasion.”
He recommends a classic, twobuttoned suit with twin vents and a plain coloured, two-ply or Wild Child Style Lab’s Nicki Egyptian cotton shirt that won’t Carapella says for the ladies, it’s crease after a long day of punting all about the dresses for looking chic in the sun - but the trick is to and partying. Luke Schapel from Ivy League Store agrees that a traditional suit is a must-have for upcoming race meets. “Black slim fit suits are our perennial best sellers,” he says. “Right now we’re seeing narrower collars, slim ties and herringbone patterns make a comeback.” However, Luke says lighter coloured suits can look fresh and keep you cool when it’s warm at the races – especially beachside at Kangaroo Island - but also recommends avoiding heavy prints. “Really bold fabrics are out,” he says. For both sexes, the Norwood Parade Precinct’s stores feature the latest accessories, which Nicki says is the best way to add life to simple outfits during summer and autumn – provided it’s in keeping with the low key theme.
She says girls are moving away from fascinators this year and taking advantage of the alternatives. “There are some great head pieces available at the moment with cute detailing like lace or pearls that women can wear out after a day at the races,” she says. “If you have a fascinator, try wearing it on the side.” She says large, funky necklaces and cuffs are the hottest accessories, while last season’s wedges - which are proving a true stayer in the fashion stakes – can be reused to save a few dollars. Your feet will thank you too. Kon says colourful or patterned ties and hats should be the stand-out piece for men. “A classic suit will allow a tie to be the highlight,” he says. “A straw Trilby-style hat adds something fun and offers sun protection.” Luke says small fedora hats are in as well, while coloured shoes can inject life into a simple outfit - provided they’re as sleek as the suit. “We’re starting to see more guys basing their outfits around coloured footwear, but this year is all about slim, smooth styles,” he says.

“ A straw Trilby-style hat adds something fun and offers sun protection.” “Don’t be afraid to do something different like brown shoes with a navy suit, but stay from shoes that are ultra-pointy, white or snake-skin.” Luke says one mistake he sees often at the races is men spending money on a suit and pairing it with a cheap-looking pair of sunglasses. “This season’s look is quite traditional, so I’d hate to see it ruined with sunnies that are too shiny or over-styled,” he says. “You don’t have to spend a lot of money, but choose an understated pair of sunglasses.”

f you’ve been to the races recently, chances are you’ve noticed that things are changing.
The vibe is up. The crowds are up. And the age of racegoers is on the way down. In fact, Roy Morgan research shows that the number of racegoers in the 25-34 age group increased by almost 400% in SA over 2008/09, and the number continues to grow.* Kelly Lianos, 24, is one of the new breed who goes to the races for the entertainment value of a great day out. “I love the atmosphere – and the dressing up side of things. It definitely gives you an excuse to frock up!” she says. Kelly is a regular at Allan Scott Park Morphettville Racecourse with her friends. She freely admits they know little about the form guide, but that doesn’t stop them having the occasional flutter. “None of us really have any idea what we’re doing, but we just put some money in the kitty and it’s usually me who has to put the bets on. “I try to get as many tips as I can off my Dad but I must admit we’re pretty happy when we walk out even! It’s more about just having fun with your friends.”

Kelly’s love of racing comes from her Dad, who has owned hoses as long as Kelly can remember.
“When I was younger, it used to be very quiet in the members and the age group was definitely older.
“He had trotters when I was really little, and he then moved into thoroughbreds when I was about five or six years old. We used to go on Saturdays with him with my sister Natalie and my mum.
“Now with the Diva Bar at Morphettville, it’s always full of younger people and the atmosphere is fantastic.
“One of his horses – So Gorgeous – ran in Melbourne pretty regularly so we used to go over to watch her, which was great fun as a 13-year-old. Then, if the horse won – which she did a fair bit – we’d get to go out to dinner.” The excitement of ownership tempted Kelly and her sister into part-ownership of a horse called Robeson. The horse didn’t turn out to be another Takeover Target, but Kelly’s still hooked. “It’s great fun, particularly if you get to follow your horse all the way from the mounting yard to the Winners’ Lounge. It’s really exciting,” she says. “Even if you don’t spend a lot of money, you can still be in a syndicate and own even a little bit of a horse. It’s great fun.” Still, there’s plenty of fun to be had regardless of whether you’re into ownership or not. And Kelly has definitely noticed the changing demographic.
“From my perspective and talking to my friends, who love the idea of the entertainment, atmosphere and the social side of things, those sort of facilities are the thing they really like with more space and more atmosphere.” So, does Kelly have one essential tip for the growing band of younger racegoers heading for trackside? “I always tell my girlfriends to wear comfortable shoes! Chances are you will be on your feet for much of the day, and maybe heading out afterwards. So still wear heels – but make sure they’re comfortable!” *Roy Morgan Research Data Dec 2009

What determines the silks that jockeys wear in races? Are they just random? The silks that a jockey wears are either those of the owner or trainer. All owners have the choice of registering their own colours. If they choose not to, then the silks worn will be those of the trainer. I was at the races recently and couldn’t believe how long the turf is on the track. Doesn’t this slow down the horses?

One of the most important aspects of racecourse management is horse safety. Ideally, you want a good coverage of turf to ensure a surface that will provide some ‘give’ for the horses. Remember that these thoroughbreds weigh between 500-600kg and they bear about 80% of their body weight on their front legs. I’ve heard horses referred to as a dam and a sire. What do these terms mean? This is terminology that relates to a horse’s breeding. Its ‘sire’ is the father and the ‘dam’ is the mother.

Do horses enjoy each other’s company? Do you keep your horses apart or is it important they socialise? Horses are individuals, some of them enjoy each other’s company and others prefer to be by themselves. Regardless, it is very important that young horses have interaction with each other (and humans) at an early age. If they are going to develop into successful racehorses, they need to learn to be around other horses and people. At Lindsay Park Stud we keep about six young horses together per paddock. When it’s time for them to go into a racing stable (from the age of two), one of the jobs of the trainer is to understand each horse’s personality in order to get the best out of them. Some horses (generally colts) prefer their own space and would rather not interact with too many horses during their training regime. On the other hand, some horses will thrive in an environment with lots of interaction.
